Tetrafunctional porphyrins‐containing trithiocarbonate groups were synthesized by an ordinary esterification method. This tetrafunctional porphyrin (TPP‐CTA) could be used as a chain transfer agent in a controlled reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) radical polymerization to prepare well‐defined 4‐arm star‐shaped polymers. N,N‐Diethylacrylamide was polymerized using TPP‐CTA in 1,4‐dioxane. Poly(N,N‐diethylacrylamide) (PDEA) is known to be a thermo‐responsive polymer, and exhibits a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in water. The star‐shaped PDEA polymer (TPP‐PDEA) was therefore also thermo‐responsive, as expected. The LCST of this polymer depended on its concentration in water, as confirmed by turbidity, dynamic light scattering (DLS), static light scattering (SLS), and 1H NMR measurements. The porphyrin cores were compartmentalized in PDEA shells in aqueous media. Below the LCST, the fluorescence intensity of TPP‐PDEA was about six times larger than that of a water‐soluble low molecular weight porphyrin compound (TSPP), whose fluorescence intensity was independent of temperature. Above the LCST, the fluorescence intensity of TPP‐PDEA decreased, while the intensity was about three times higher than that of TSPP. These observations suggested that interpolymer aggregation occurred due to the hydrophobic interactions of the dehydrated PDEA arm chains above the LCST, with self‐quenching of the porphyrin moieties arising from these interactions. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent, dendritic polyester with 16 dithiobenzoate terminal groups, was prepared and used in the RAFT polymerization of styrene (St) to produce star polystyrene (PSt) with a dendrimer core. It was found that this polymerization was of living characters, the molecular weight of the dendrimer‐star polymers could be controlled and the polydispersities were narrow. The dendrimer‐star block copolymers of St and methyl acrylate (MA) were also prepared by the successive RAFT polymerization using the dendrimer‐star PSt as macro chain transfer agent. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(fluoroalkyl mathacrylate)‐block‐poly(butyl methacrylate) diblock copolymer latices were synthesized by a two‐step process. In the first step, a homopolymer end‐capped with a dithiobenzoyl group [poly(fluoroalkyl mathacrylate) (PFAMA) or poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA)] was prepared in bulk via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate as a RAFT agent. In the second step, the homopolymer chain‐transfer agent (macro‐CTA) was dissolved in the second monomer, mixed with a water phase containing a surfactant, and then ultrasonicated to form a miniemulsion. Subsequently, the RAFT‐mediated miniemulsion polymerization of the second monomer (butyl methacrylate or fluoroalkyl mathacrylate) was carried out in the presence of the first block macro‐CTA. The influence of the polymerization sequence of the two kinds of monomers on the colloidal stability and molecular weight distribution was investigated. Gel permeation chromatography analyses and particle size results indicated that using the PFAMA macro‐CTA as the first block was better than using the PBMA RAFT agent with respect to the colloidal stability and the narrow molecular weight distribution of the F‐copolymer latices. The F‐copolymers were characterized with 1H NMR, 19F NMR, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Comparing the contact angle of a water droplet on a thin film formed by the fluorinated copolymer with that of PBMA, we found that for the diblock copolymers containing a fluorinated block, the surface energy decreased greatly, and the hydrophobicity increased. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization has been successfully applied to polymerize acrylonitrile with dibenzyl trithiocarbonate as the chain‐transfer agent. The key to success is ascribed to the improvement of the interchange frequency between dormant and active species through the reduction of the activation energy for the fragmentation of the intermediate. The influence of several experimental parameters, such as the molar ratio of the chain‐transfer agent to the initiator [azobis(isobutyronitrile)], the molar ratio of the monomer to the chain‐transfer agent, and the monomer concentration, on the polymerization kinetics and the molecular weight as well as the polydispersity has been investigated in detail. Matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry and 1H NMR analyses have confirmed the chain‐end functionality of the resultant polymer. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Triblock copolymers of poly(styrenesulfonate)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(styrenesulfonate) with narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.28–1.40) and well‐defined structure have been synthesized in aqueous solution at 70 °C via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) capped with 4‐cyanopentanoic acid dithiobenzoate end groups was used as the macro chain transfer agent (PEG macro‐CTA) for sole monomer sodium 4‐styrenesulfonate. The reaction was controllable and displayed living polymerization characteristics and the triblock copolymer had designed molecular weight. The reaction rate depended strongly on the CTA and initiator concentration ratio [CTA]0/[ACPA]0: an increase in [CTA]0/[ACPA]0 from 1.0 to 5.0 slowed down the polymerization rate and improved the molecular weight distribution with a prolonged induction time. The polymerization proceeded, following first‐order kinetics when [CTA]0/[ACPA]0 = 2.5 and 5.0. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 3698–3706, 2007  相似文献

We report the first instance of facile synthesis of dumbbell‐shaped dendritic‐linear‐dendritic triblock copolymer, [G‐3]‐PNIPAM‐[G‐3], consisting of third generation poly(benzyl ether) monodendrons ([G‐3]) and linear poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The key step was the preparation of novel [G‐3]‐based RAFT agent, [G‐3]‐CH2SCSSCH2‐[G‐3] (1), from third‐generation dendritic poly(benzyl ether) bromide, [G‐3]‐CH2Br. Due to the bulky nature of [G‐3]‐CH2Br, its transformation into trithiocarbonate 1 cannot go to completion, a mixture containing ~80 mol % of 1 and 20 mol % [G‐3]‐CH2Br was obtained. Dumbbell‐shaped [G‐3]‐PNIPAM310‐[G‐3] triblock copolymer was then successfully obtained by the RAFT polymerization of N‐isopropylacylamide (NIPAM) using 1 as the mediating agent, and trace amount of unreacted [G‐3]‐CH2Br was conveniently removed during purification by precipitating the polymer into diethyl ether. The dendritic‐linear‐dendritic triblock structure was further confirmed by aminolysis, and fully characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and 1H‐NMR. The amphiphilic dumbbell‐shaped triblock copolymer contains a thermoresponsive PNIPAM middle block, in aqueous solution it self‐assembles into spherical nanoparticles with the core consisting of hydrophobic [G‐3] dendritic block and stabilized by the PNIPAM central block, forming loops surrounding the insoluble core. The micellar properties of [G‐3]‐PNIPAM310‐[G‐3] were then fully characterized. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 1432–1445, 2007  相似文献

A cyclic selenium‐based reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent, 5,5‐dimethyl‐3‐phenyl‐2‐selenoxo‐1,3‐selenazolidin‐4‐one (RAFT‐Se), was synthesized and utilized in the RAFT polymerizations of vinyl acetate (VAc). Its analog, 5,5‐dimethyl‐3‐phenyl‐2‐thioxothiazolidin‐4‐one (RAFT‐S), was also used in RAFT polymerizations for comparison under identical conditions. The RAFT polymerizations of VAc with RAFT‐Se were moderately controlled evidenced by the increase of molecular weights with conversion, despite the slightly high Mw/Mn (less than 1.90), whereas the molecular weights were poorly controlled in the presence of RAFT‐S (2.00 < Mw/Mn < 2.30). Thanks to its unusual cyclic structure of RAFT‐Se, one or more RAFT‐Se species was incorporated into the resultant poly(VAc) as revealed by the results of cleavage of polymer and atomic absorption spectroscopy. Considering the biorelated functions of both poly(VAc) and Se element, this work undoubtedly provided a successful methodology of how to incorporate high content of Se into a molecular weight controlled poly(VAc). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate)–poly(n‐butyl acrylate) block copolymers were synthesized with the reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) process. The block copolymers were synthesized successfully with either poly(2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate) or poly(n‐butyl acrylate) macro‐RAFT agents. The resulting block copolymers had narrow molecular weight distributions (polydispersity index = 1.3–1.4). Copolymer self‐aggregation in water yielded micelles, with the hydrodynamic diameter (Dh) values of the aggregates dependent on the length of both blocks according to DhNBA1.17NHEA0.57, where NBA is the number of repeating units of n‐butyl acrylate and NHEA is the number of repeating units of 2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate. The micelles were subsequently stabilized via chain extension of the block copolymer with a crosslinking agent. The successful chain extension in a micellar system was confirmed by an increase in the molecular weight, which was detected with membrane osmometry. The crosslinked particles showed noticeably different aggregation behavior in diverse solvent systems. The uncrosslinked micelles formed by the block copolymer (NHEA = 260, NBA = 75) displayed a definite critical micelle concentration at 5.4 × 10?4 g L?1 in aqueous solutions. However, upon crosslinking, the critical micelle concentration transition became obscure. © 2006Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 2177–2194, 2006  相似文献

The reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of N‐vinylcarbazole (NVK) mediated by macromolecular xanthates was used to prepare three types of block copolymers containing poly(N‐vinylcarbazole) (PVK). Using a poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether based xanthate ( PEG‐X ), the RAFT polymerization of NVK proceeded in a controlled way to afford a series of PEG‐b‐PVK with different PVK chain lengths. Successive RAFT polymerization of NVK and vinyl acetate (VAc) with a small molecule xanthate ( X1 ) as the chain transfer agent was tested to prepare PVK‐b‐PVAc. Though both monomers can be homopolymerized in a controlled manner with this xanthate, only by polymerizing NVK first could give well‐defined block copolymers. The xanthate groups in the end of PVK could be removed by radical‐induced reduction using tributylstannane, and PVK‐b‐PVA was obtained by further hydrolysis of PVK‐b‐PVAc under basic conditions. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the reversible addition–fragmentation transfer (RAFT) copolymerization of two monomers, even with the simple terminal model, there are two kinds of macroradical and two kinds of polymeric RAFT agent with different R groups. Because the structure of the R group could exert a significant influence on the RAFT process, RAFT copolymerization may behave differently from RAFT homopolymerization. The RAFT copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) in miniemulsion was investigated. The performance of the RAFT copolymerization of MMA/St in miniemulsion was found to be dependent on the feed monomer compositions. When St is dominant in the feed monomer composition, RAFT copolymerization is well controlled in the whole range of monomer conversion. However, when MMA is dominant, RAFT copolymerization may be, in some cases, out of control in the late stage of copolymerization, and characterized by a fast increase in the polydispersity index (PDI). The RAFT process was found to have little influence on composition evolution during copolymerization. The synthesis of the well‐defined gradient copolymers and poly[St‐b‐(St‐co‐MMA)] block copolymer by RAFT miniemulsion copolymerization was also demonstrated. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization has emerged as one of the important living radical polymerization techniques. Herein, we report the polymerization of di(ethylene glycol) 2‐ethylhexyl ether acrylate (DEHEA), a commercially‐available monomer consisting of an amphiphilic side chain, via RAFT by using bis(2‐propionic acid) trithiocarbonate as the chain transfer agent (CTA) and AIBN as the radical initiator, at 70 °C. The kinetics of DEHEA polymerization was also evaluated. Synthesis of well‐defined ABA triblock copolymers consisting of poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA) or poly(octadecyl acrylate) (PODA) middle blocks were prepared from a PDEHEA macroCTA. By starting from a PtBA macroCTA, a BAB triblock copolymer with PDEHEA as the middle block was also readily prepared. These amphiphilic block copolymers with PDEHEA segments bearing unique amphiphilic side chains could potentially be used as the precursor components for construction of self‐assembled nanostructures. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerizations of 2‐naphthyl acrylate (2NA) initiated by 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile were investigated with 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl 1‐dithionaphthalate (CPDN) as a RAFT agent at various temperatures in a benzene solution. The results of the polymerizations showed that 2NA could be polymerized in a controlled way by RAFT polymerization with CPDN as a RAFT agent; the polymerization rate was first‐order with respect to the monomer concentration, and the molecular weight increased linearly with the monomer conversion. The polydispersities of the polymer were relatively low up to high conversions in all cases. The chain‐extension reactions of poly(2‐naphthyl acrylate) (P2NA) with methyl methacrylate and styrene successfully yielded poly(2‐naphthyl acrylate)‐b‐poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(2‐naphthyl acrylate)‐b‐polystyrene block polymers, respectively, with narrow polydispersities. The P2NA obtained by RAFT polymerization had a strong ultraviolet absorption at 270 nm, and the molecular weights had no apparent effect on the ultraviolet absorption intensities; however, the fluorescence intensity of P2NA increased as the molecular weight increased and was higher than that of 2NA. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of new reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents with cyanobenzyl R groups were synthesized. In comparison with other dithioester RAFT agents, these new RAFT agents were odorless or low‐odor, and this made them much easier to handle. The kinetics of methyl methacrylate radical polymerizations mediated by these RAFT agents were investigated. The polymerizations proceeded in a controlled way, the first‐order kinetics evolved in a linear fashion with time, the molecular weights increased linearly with the conversions, and the polydispersities were very narrow (~1.1). A poly[(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐polystyrene] block copolymer was prepared (number‐average molecular weight = 42,600, polydispersity index = 1.21) from a poly(methyl methacrylate) macro‐RAFT agent. These new RAFT agents also showed excellent control over the radical polymerization of styrenics and acrylates. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The comb‐type grafted hydrogels poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐g‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM‐g‐PNIPAM) and poly(acrylic acid)‐g‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PAAc‐g‐PNIPAM) were prepared by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. A macromolecular chain‐transfer agent was prepared first. Then, hydrogels were obtained by a reaction with a comonomer (N‐isopropylacrylamide or acrylic acid) in the presence of N,N‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker. The equilibrium swelling ratios and the swelling and deswelling kinetics of PNIPAM‐g‐PNIPAM were measured. The effects of the chain length and amount on the swelling behavior were investigated. The deswelling mechanism was illustrated. Meanwhile, the PAAc‐g‐PNIPAM hydrogel was used to confirm the versatility of this novel method. It was prepared in an alcoholic medium, whereas hydrogen‐bonding complexes formed in 1,4‐dioxane, which was chosen as the reaction medium for the PNIPAM‐g‐PNIPAM hydrogel. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) homopolymers synthesized by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization were used as macro‐chain‐transfer agents to synthesize smart amphiphilic block copolymers with a switchable hydrophilic–hydrophobic block of PNIPAAm and a hydrophilic block of poly(N‐dimethylacrylamide). All polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, 1H NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry. The reversible micelles formed by the block copolymers of various compositions in aqueous solutions were characterized by 1H NMR, dynamic light scattering, and tensiometry. Micelles were observed in the aqueous solutions when the temperature was increased to 40 °C because of the collapse of the PNIPAAm structure, which led to a PNIPAAm hydrophobic block. The drug loading capacity was illustrated with the use of the solvatochromic Reichardt's dye and measured by ultraviolet–visible. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Among the living radical polymerization techniques, reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) and macromolecular design via the interchange of xanthates (MADIX) polymerizations appear to be the most versatile processes in terms of the reaction conditions, the variety of monomers for which polymerization can be controlled, tolerance to functionalities, and the range of polymeric architectures that can be produced. This review highlights the progress made in RAFT/MADIX polymerization since the first report in 1998. It addresses, in turn, the mechanism and kinetics of the process, examines the various components of the system, including the synthesis paths of the thiocarbonyl‐thio compounds used as chain‐transfer agents, and the conditions of polymerization, and gives an account of the wide range of monomers that have been successfully polymerized to date, as well as the various polymeric architectures that have been produced. In the last section, this review describes the future challenges that the process will face and shows its opening to a wider scientific community as a synthetic tool for the production of functional macromolecules and materials. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of statistical and block copolymers, consisting of monomers often used as resist materials in photolithography, using reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization is reported. Methacrylate and acrylate monomers with norbornyl and adamantyl moieties were polymerized using both dithioester and trithiocarbonate RAFT agents. Block copolymers containing such monomers were made with poly(methyl acrylate) and polystyrene macro‐RAFT agents. In addition to have the ability to control molecular weight, polydispersity, and allow block copolymer formation, the polymers made via RAFT polymerization required end‐group removal to avoid complications during the photolithography. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
