Cavitational/sonochemical activity can be significantly enhanced or reduced depending on the gases dissolved in the liquid. Although many researchers have suggested the order of importance of dissolved gas conditions that affect the degree of sonoluminescence (SL), sonochemiluminescence (SCL), and compound degradation, the most suitable gas condition for sonochemical oxidation reactions is currently unknown. In this study (Part I), the effects of gas saturation and sparging on the generation of H2O2 were investigated in a 28-kHz sonoreactor system. Four gas modes, saturation/closed, saturation/open, sparging/closed, and sparging/open, were applied to Ar, O2, N2, and binary gas mixtures. The change in dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration during ultrasonic irradiation was measured and was used as an indicator of whether the gaseous exchange between liquid and air altered the gas content of the liquid. Considerable difference in the DO concentration was observed for the gas saturation/open mode, ranging from –11.5 mg/L (O2 100 %) to +4.3 mg/L (N2 100 %), while no significant difference was observed in the other gas modes. The change in the gas content significantly reduced the linearity for H2O2 generation, which followed pseudo-zero-order kinetics, and either positively or negatively affected H2O2 generation. Ar:O2 (75:25) and Ar:O2 (50:50) resulted in the highest and second-highest H2O2 generation for both gas saturation and sparging, respectively. In addition, gas sparging resulted in much higher H2O2 generation for all gas conditions compared to gas saturation; this was because of the significant change in the cavitational active zone and concentrated ultrasonic energy, which formed a bulb-shaped active zone, especially for the Ar/O2 mixtures adjacent to the transducer at the bottom. The sparging flow rate and position also significantly affected H2O2 generation; the highest H2O2 generation was obtained when the sparger was placed at the bottom adjacent to the transducer, with a flow rate of 3 L/min.In Part II, the generation of nitrogen oxides, including nitrite (NO2) and nitrate (NO3), was investigated using the same ultrasonic system with three gas modes: saturation/open, saturation/closed, and sparging/closed.  相似文献

This study investigated the degradation of ibuprofen (IBP), an activated persulfate (PS), when subjected to ultrasonic (US) irradiation and mechanical mixing (M). The effects of several critical factors were evaluated, including the effect of rpm on M, PS concentration, and initial pH, and that of temperature on IBP degradation kinetics and the PS activation mechanism. The resulting IBP oxidation rate constant was significantly higher at 400 rpm. As the PS load increased, the IBP oxidation rate constant increased. The value of the IBP reaction rate increased with decreasing pH; below pH 4.9, there was no significant difference in the IBP oxidation rate constant. The IBP oxidation activation energy when using the US/M-PS system was 18.84 kJ mol−1. In the US/M-PS system, PS activation was the primary effect of temperature at the interface during the explosion of cavitation bubbles. These encouraging results suggest that the US-PS/M process is a promising strategy for the treatment of IBP-based water pollutants.  相似文献

During ultrasound-induced cavitation in liquids, acoustic emissions at fundamental and harmonic frequencies can be detected. The effect of acoustic emissions at harmonic frequencies on the sonochemical and sonophysical activities has not been explored, especially in large-scale sonoreactors. In this study, the acoustic emissions in the range, 0-250 kHz in a 36 kHz sonoreactor with varying liquid heights were studied and compared with the sonochemical activities. The acoustic pressures at both fundamental and harmonics decreased drastically as the liquid height was increased due to the attenuation of sound energy. It was observed that the increase in input power resulted in only an increase in the acoustic emissions at derivative frequencies such as, harmonics and subharmonics. The sonochemical activity, evaluated in terms of sonochemiluminescence and H2O2 yield, was not significantly enhanced at higher input power levels. This suggests that at higher power levels, the “extra” acoustic energy is not effectively used to generate primary cavitation activity; rather it is converted to generate acoustic emissions at harmonic and subharmonic frequencies. This is an important observation for the design of energy efficiency large-scale sonochemical reactors.  相似文献

Underwater plasma has been long recognized as a “green” alternative to conventional chemicals in the wastewater treatment processes. However, practical application of underwater plasma is still challenging due to insufficient treatment performance. Recently, we proposed a novel process named ACAP utilizing acoustic cavitation in order to stabilize the plasma generation and to enlarge the plasma processing region. This work continues our investigation regarding the ACAP treatment process focusing on effects of gas injection. Experiments were performed using an ultrasonic installation equipped with a specially designed sonotrode (Diam. 48 mm) operated at a frequency of 20 kHz and acoustic power of 120 W. The results revealed that the degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B, which was used as a model wastewater pollutant, remains almost unchangeable in the case of air injection, but it is doubled when argon is injected into the ACAP reactor. It was found that the argon injection enhances the degradation efficiency significantly even without ultrasound irradiation. Results of additional measurements suggest that the effect of argon is attributed to its ability to yield high temperature during cavitation, comparatively good solubility in water and a better ability to reduce the breakdown voltage in water compared to the air case.  相似文献

Dissolved gases have a substantial influence on acoustic cavitation and sonochemical oxidation reactions. Little research on the changes in dissolved gases and the resultant changes in sonochemical oxidation has been reported, and most studies have focused only on the initial dissolved gas conditions. In this study, the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration was measured continuously during ultrasonic irradiation using an optical sensor in different gas modes (saturation/open, saturation/closed, and sparging/closed modes). Simultaneously, the resulting changes in sonochemical oxidation were quantified using KI dosimetry. In the saturation/open mode using five gas conditions of Ar and O2, the DO concentration decreased rapidly when O2 was present because of active gas exchange with the atmosphere, and the DO concentration increased when 100% Ar was used. As a result, the order of the zero-order reaction constant for the first 10 min (k0-10) decreased in the order Ar:O2 (75:25) > 100% Ar ≈ Ar:O2 (50:50) > Ar:O2 (25:75) > 100% O2, whereas that during the last 10 min (k20-30) when the DO concentration was relatively stable, decreased in the order 100% Ar > Ar:O2 (75:25) > Ar:O2 (50:50) ≈ Ar:O2 (20:75) > 100% O2. In the saturation/closed mode, the DO concentration decreased to approximately 70–80% of the initial level because of ultrasonic degassing, and there was no influence of gases other than Ar and O2. Consequently, k0-10 and k20-30 decreased in the order Ar:O2 (75:25) > Ar:O2 (50:50) > Ar:O2 (25:75) > 100% Ar > 100% O2. In the sparging/closed mode, the DO concentration was maintained at approximately 90% of the initial level because of the more active gas adsorption induced by gas sparging, and the values of k0-10 and k20-30 were almost the same as those in the saturation/closed mode. In the saturation/open and sparging/closed modes, the Ar:O2 (75:25) condition was most favorable for enhancing sonochemical oxidation. However, a comparison of k0-10 and k20-30 indicated that there would be an optimal dissolved gas condition that was different from the initial gas condition. In addition, the mass-transfer and ultrasonic-degassing coefficients were calculated using changes in the DO concentration in the three modes.  相似文献

The effect of flow in an ultrasonic reactor is an important consideration for practical applications and for the scale-up of ultrasonic processing. Previous literature on the influence of flow on sonochemical activity has reported conflicting results. Therefore, this work examined the effect of overhead stirring at four different frequencies, 40, 376, 995 and 1179 kHz, in two different reactor configurations. Comparable power settings were utilised to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of interactions between the flow and sonochemical activity. The sonochemical activity was determined by the yield of hydrogen peroxide, measured by iodide dosimetry, and the active region was visualised with sonochemiluminescence imaging. The overhead stirring in the low frequency reactor altered the yield of hydrogen peroxide so it produced the maximum yield out of the four frequencies. The increase in hydrogen peroxide yield was attributed to a reduction in coalescence at 40 kHz. However at the higher frequencies, coalescence was not found to be the main reason behind the observed reductions in sonochemical yield. Rather the prevention of wave propagation and the reduction of the standing wave portion of the field were considered.  相似文献

The present study investigates the wastewater treatment performance of an acoustic cavitation assisted plasma (ACAP) process in a circulating reactor using Rhodamine B (RhB) as a model water pollution. The concept of this process was proposed by the authors recently for a batch type rector. The measurements revealed that combining the ultrasound irradiation with pulsed discharge plasma allows the RhB degradation efficiency to be drastically increased as compared with the plasma-alone case. This effect is especially significant at higher values of solution electrical conductivity examined in a range of 20 ~ 400 μS/cm. Acidic conditions and larger flow rates of solution were found to be favorable for the degradation efficiency. The effect of flow rate was also analyzed through numerical simulation. The results indicated that the mass transfer of RhB to the plasma-cavitation zone is one of the controlling parameters influencing the degradation performance. Behavior of bubbles and pulse discharge frequency were examined using a high-speed video camera. Relatively large bubbles were found to favor the plasma pulse generation and propagation when move near the high-voltage electrode. On the whole, the results of this study suggest that the ACAP process has the potential to synergistically extend the application area of underwater plasma in both research and industry.  相似文献

Sonochemical degradation of 4-chlorophenol, phenol, catechol and resorcinol was studied under Ar at 200 kHz in the absence and presence of Na2SO4 or NaCl. The rates of sonochemical degradation in the absence of salts decreased in the order 4-chlorophenol > phenol > catechol > resorcinol and this order was in good agreement with the order of log P (partition coefficient) value of each phenolic compound. The effects of salts on the rates of sonochemical degradation consisted of no effect or slight negative or positive effects. We discussed these unclear results based on two viewpoints: one was based on the changes in pseudo hydrophobicity and/or diffusion behavior of phenolic compounds and the other was based on the changes in solubility of Ar gas. The measured log P value of each phenolic compound slightly increased with increasing salt concentration. In addition, the dynamic surface tension for 4-chlorophenol aqueous solution in the absence and presence of Na2SO4 or NaCl suggested that phenolic compounds more easily accumulated at the interface region of bubbles at higher salt concentration. These results indicated that the rates of sonochemical degradation should be enhanced by the addition of salts. On the other hand, the calculated Ar gas solubility was confirmed to decrease with increasing salt concentration. The yield of H2O2 formed in the presence of Na2SO4 or NaCl decreased with increasing salt concentration. These results suggested that sonochemical efficiency decreased with decreasing gas amount in aqueous solution: a negative effect of salts was observed. Because negative and positive effects were induced simultaneously, we concluded that the effects of salts on the rates of sonochemical degradation of phenolic compounds became unclear. The products formed from sonochemical degradation of 4-chlorophenol were also characterized by HPLC analysis. The formation of phenol and 4-chloro-1,3-dihydroxy benzene was confirmed and these concentrations were affected by the presence of salts.  相似文献

Sonochemical activity is dependent on flow patterns within the reactor and either no affect or a decrease in activity was observed at 376, 995, and 1179 kHz from overhead stirring. The interaction of fluid flow with ultrasound was further investigated in this study with circulatory flow. The effect of fluid circulation on radical production was investigated at two circulation speeds, with and without surface stabilisation. The sonochemical activity was determined by the yield of hydrogen peroxide, measured by iodide dosimetry. The sonochemically active region was pictured using sonochemiluminescence imaging and the flow fields were visualised with dyed flow videos. At 376 and 995 kHz, an increase in sonochemical activity was observed with the slower flow rate; however at 1179 kHz, the sonochemical activity was either not affected or decreased. The observed changes in sonochemical activity were attributed to an increase in asymmetry of the bubble collapse brought about by fluid motion.  相似文献

This paper deals about the sonochemical water treatment of acetaminophen (ACP, N-acetyl-p-aminophenol or paracetamol), one of the most popular pharmaceutical compounds found in natural and drinking waters. Effect of ultrasonic power (20–60 W), initial ACP concentration (33–1323 μmol L−1) and pH (3–12) were evaluated. High ultrasonic powers and, low and natural acidic pH values favored the efficiency of the treatment. Effect of initial substrate concentration showed that the Langmuir-type kinetic model fit well the ACP sonochemical degradation. The influence of organic compounds in the water matrix, at concentrations 10-fold higher than ACP, was also evaluated. The results indicated that only organic compounds having a higher value of the Henry’s law constant than the substrate decrease the efficiency of the treatment. On the other hand, ACP degradation in mineral natural water showed to be strongly dependent of the initial substrate concentration. A positive matrix effect was observed at low ACP concentrations (1.65 μmol L−1), which was attributed to the presence of bicarbonate ion in solution. However, at relative high ACP concentrations a detrimental effect of matrix components was noticed. Finally, the results indicated that ultrasonic action is able to transform ACP in aliphatic organic compounds that could be subsequently eliminated in a biological system.  相似文献

Solids such as soils and sediments contaminated with per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) from exposure to impacted media, e.g., landfill leachate or biosolids, direct contaminated discharge, and contaminant transport from atmospheric deposition, have caused significant environmental pollution. Such solids can act as secondary sources of PFAS for groundwater and surface water contamination. There are currently no proven technologies that can degrade PFAS in soil and sediments in a cost-effective, environmentally-friendly, and energy-efficient manner. This study examines the use of coupled high and low-frequency ultrasound in desorbing and degrading PFAS in soil, thereby achieving concurrent treatment and destruction of PFAS in soil. Two common PFAS, namely perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), were used to evaluate treatment performance in soils with both low and high organic matter contents. The test results showed that the ultrasound treatment could significantly reduce PFAS concentrations in artificially contaminated soil; however, no significant degradation was achieved. Ultrasound treatment did improve desorption of PFAS from solid particles, particularly from the highly absorbent organic soil; 68.8 ± 1.8% of PFOA and 45.4 ± 4.1% of PFOS were leached from the soil after ultrasound treatment compared to only 28 ± 0.2% of PFOA and 1 ± 3.1% of PFOS after desorption in water. This work shows that sonication treatment is an effective technology for the removal of PFAS from solids, however, the presence of solids in the solidliquid slurry can negatively impact ultrasonic cavitation, inhibiting the sonolytic degradation of desorbed PFAS.  相似文献

The aims of the current study were to evaluate the best technique for total phenolic extraction from Lavandula pubescens (Lp) and its application in vegetable oil industries as alternatives of synthetic food additives (TBHQ and BHT). To achieve these aims, three techniques of extraction were used: ultrasonic-microwave (40 kHz, 50 W, microwave power 480 W, 5 min), ultrasonic-homogenizer (20 kHz, 150 W, 5 min) and conventional maceration as a control. By using the Folin–Ciocalteu method, the total phenolic contents (TPC) (mg gallic acid equivalent/g dry matter) were found to be 253.87, 216.96 and 203.41 for ultrasonic-microwave extract, ultrasonic-homogenizer extract and maceration extract, respectively. The ultrasonic-microwave extract achieved the higher scavenger effect of DPPH (90.53%) with EC50 (19.54 μg/mL), and higher inhibition of β-carotene/linoleate emulsion deterioration (94.44%) with IC50 (30.62 μg/mL). The activity of the ultrasonic-microwave treatment could prolong the induction period (18.82 h) and oxidative stability index (1.67) of fresh refined, bleached and deodorized palm olein oil (RBDPOo) according to Rancimat assay. There was an important synergist effect between citric acid and Lp extracts in improving the oxidative stability of fresh RBDPOo. The results of this work also showed that the ultrasonic-microwave assisted extract was the most effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains that were assessed in this study. The uses of ultrasonic-microwave could induce the acoustic cavitation and rupture of plant cells, and this facilitates the flow of solvent into the plant cells and enhances the desorption from the matrix of solid samples, and thus would enhance the efficiency of extraction based on cavitation phenomenon.  相似文献

A method for degrading organic pollutants in suspension by applying laser-induced cavitation is presented. Cavitation bubbles are produced remotely by laser beams, achieving a purpose of non-contact degradation. In this work, laser-induced bubble dynamics in SiO2 sand suspension were studied by high-speed imaging. Pulsating characteristics of cavitaiton bubbles in the infinite domain and near a solid boundary were investigated among various laser energies and sand concentrations. Furthermore, the extent of degradation after processing in suspension and the mechanism were analyzed. Results indicate that solid particles in the liquid medium reduce the extent of degradation. However, the extent of degradation may rebound at a proper sand concentration. In addition, compared to several small bubbles in a bubble string (in the infinite domain), a single larger bubble (near a solid boundary) has a much higher degradation ability.  相似文献

Herein, we report sonochemical synthesis of MnFe2O4 spinel ferrite nanoparticles using UZ SONOPULS HD 2070 Ultrasonic homogenizer (frequency: 20 kHz and power: 70 W). The sonication time and percentage amplitude of ultrasonic power input cause appreciable changes in the structural, cation distribution and physical properties of MnFe2O4 nanoparticles. The average crystallite size of synthesized MnFe2O4 nanoparticles was increased with increase of sonication time and percentage amplitude of ultrasonic power input. The occupational formula by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for prepared spinel ferrite nanoparticles was (Mn0.29Fe0.42)[Mn0.71Fe1.58]O4 and (Mn0.28Fe0.54) [Mn0.72Fe1.46]O4 at sonication time 20 min and 80 min, respectively. The value of the saturation magnetization was increased from 1.9 emu/g to 52.5 emu/g with increase of sonication time 20 min to 80 min at constant 50% amplitude of ultrasonic power input, whereas, it was increased from 30.2 emu/g to 59.4 emu/g with increase of the percentage amplitude of ultrasonic power input at constant sonication time 60 min. The highest value of dielectric constant (ε′) was 499 at 1 kHz for nanoparticles at sonication time 20 min, whereas, ac conductivity was 368 × 10−9 S/cm at 1 kHz for spinel ferrite nanoparticles at sonication time 20 min. The demonstrated controllable physical characteristics over sonication time and percentage amplitude of ultrasonic power input are a key step to design spinel ferrite material of desired properties for specific application. The investigation of microwave operating frequency suggest that these prepared spinel ferrite nanoparticles are potential candidate for fabrication of devices at high frequency applications.  相似文献

The mathematical method of separation of motions represents the effect of fast high-frequency oscillations by an effective averaged force or potential. Ultrasound acoustic vibrations are an example of such rapid oscillations leading to cavitation in water due to the gas phase formation (bubbles). Ultrasound cavitation is used to treat the surface of brass microparticles submerged in water. The formation of bubbles and their collapse triggers the modification of surface roughness and chemical composition. Consequently, the suspension separates into various fractions related to demonstrating biocide properties. While the exact mechanism of this process is complex, it can be explained phenomenologically by using the Onsager reciprocal relations for coupling the copper ion diffusion with the gas phase separation in water as a result of the action of the effective average vibrational force.

Vigorous physical effects including micro-jet and micro-streaming can be induced in heterogeneous systems by acoustic cavitation. This can be useful for the removal of pollutants from contaminated soil particles. In this study, the diesel removal efficiencies in ultrasonic, mechanical, and combined soil washing processes have been compared considering the electrical energy consumptions for these processes. The combined process showed synergistic effects for both removal efficiency and effective volume also has the advantage of a short operation time compared to the sequential processes. Thus the ultrasonic soil washing process with mechanical mixing is considered a promising technology for industrial use.  相似文献

The magnetic and mechanical properties of rare-earth magnets hot-deformed at temperature range 750-950 °C have been investigated. The grains tended to grow excessively from dozens of nanometers to several microns at the temperatures above 850 °C. The alignment of grains was disrupted by the hot deformation at the high temperatures. The Nd-rich phase was extruded at the temperatures which are higher than 850 °C. The Nd-rich phase extrusion resulted in the reduction of density by 1% and the reduction of remanence from 1.42 to 0.72 T. The reduction of grain boundaries caused by flat platelet-shaped grains changing to spherical grains and the weak binding strength among large grains of Nd2Fe14B phase may be the main reasons for the low mechanical strength of hot-deformed magnets.  相似文献
