The behavior of waves generated by periodic pressure on the free surface is considered within the linear shallow-water theory. The fluid depth is a piecewise-constant function, which implies the presence of a finite-size bottom trench or elevation. For an arbitrary shape of bottom unevenness, the solution of the problem reduces to a system of integral boundary equations. The concepts of subcritical and supercritical flows are introduced for the long-wave approximation model describing stationary free-boundary rotational flows of an ideal incompressible fluid. Shear flows of a fluid layer above an uneven bottom are analyzed. Exact solutions describing different flow regimes are constructed, and the flow properties are studied as a function of the flow regime. A mathematical model of seiches is developed for the case of sharp bottom elevation or depression. An effective high-precision numerical and analytical method is applied to determine the natural frequencies and shapes of the lower modes of oscillations. New important hydrodynamic effects of the bottom relief are revealed. The main features of standing waves in a narrow vessel in the presence of sharp bottom elevation are confirmed by laboratory experiments.  相似文献

The problem of wave propagation in a dust–air mixture inside a branched channel has not been studied widely in literature, even though this topic has many important applications especially in process safety (dust explosions). In this paper, a shock wave interaction with a cloud of solid particles, and the further behaviour of both gas and particulate phases were studied using numerical techniques. The geometry mimicked a real channel where bends or branches are common. Two numerical approaches were used: Eulerian–Eulerian and Eulerian–Lagrangian. Using Eulerian-Lagrangian simulation, it was possible to include the effects of particle–particle and particle–wall collisions in a realistic and direct manner. Results are mainly shown as snap-shots of particle positions during the simulations and statistics for the particle displacement. The results of an experimental investigation concerned with the study of the strain field surrounding a brittle fracture propagating across a wide steel plate are presented in this paper. The data were obtained from tests of 6-ft wide steel plates that were instrumentated to measure surface strain and crack speed. The plates were tested at an average net applied stress of 19,000 psi, a temperature of about ?5° F, and with the notch-wedgeimpact method for fracture initiation. Several plates were tested under similar conditions and the results were superimposed to give a representative picture of the strain distribution on the surface of a plate in the region of the tip of a propagating fracture. Contours of the maximum principal strain for various lengths of crack are presented. The studies indicate that for this particular specimen geometry and associated test conditions, the strain field surrounding the tip of the advancing fracture remains essentially unchanged after traversing about one-third of the width of a 6-ft wide plate.  相似文献

The widespread use of shock tubes in laboratory practice is well known. However, despite existing information [1] about shock-wave velocities of 100 km/sec, experimental data on the size of the shock-heated region behind the shock front are confined to the Mach numbers M = 10 [2]. Theoretical data do not go beyond the limit of this range except for air where calculations were performed up to M = 20 [3, 4]. Behind strong shocks, the effects resulting from viscosity, thermal conductivity, and radiation of the medium should lead to serious deviation of the actual flow from the idealized pattern for uniform motion of a piston in a channel filled with anonviscous, thermally nonconducting, and nonradiating medium. The flow of a solution between parallel plates is considered. The bottom plate is porous, while the top one is an impermeable solid. A computer program based on the control volume approach was developed to analyse the flow and concentration fields. The effects of the slip at the porous wall on the velocity and particle concentration distributions were investigated. It was observed that as the slip increases, the concentration on the porous wall decreases and the maximum velocity moves towards the porous wall. The concentration on the porous wall increases in the flow direction. This increase in the particle concentration along the porous wall may cause a reduction of the porosity and hence a variation in the suction rate along the porous wall. In order to take this effect into account, a linearly varying transverse velocity along the porous wall was considered. The results were compared with the data available in the literature.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of theoretical and experimental studies of open-channel waves generated by the propagation of a discontinuous dam-break wave over a bottom step. The cases where the initial tailwater level is higher than the step height (the step is under water) and where this value is smaller than the step height (at the initial time, water is absent on the step) are considered. Exact solutions are constructed using modified first-approximation equations of shallow-water theory, which admit the propagation of discontinuous waves in a dry channel. On the stationary hydraulic jump formed above the bottom step, the total free-stream energy is assumed to be conserved. The propagation and attenuation of an initial shock wave through a mm-scale channel of circular cross-section over lengths up to 2,000 diameters is examined as a model problem for the scaling of viscous effects in compressible flows. Experimental wave velocity measurements and pressure profiles are compared with existing data and theoretical predictions for shock attenuation at large scales and low pressures. Significantly more attenuation is observed than predicted based on streamtube divergence. Simulations of the experiment show that viscous effects need to be included, and the boundary layer behavior is important. A numerical model including boundary layer and channel entrance effects reproduces the wave front velocity measurements, provided a boundary layer transition model is included. A significant late-time pressure rise is observed in experiments and in the simulations.  相似文献

We consider the flow in a symmetric two-dimensional channel with an expanded section. By examining the effect of varying the ratio of the inlet and outlet channel widths, we are able to place the earlier results of Mizushima et al. (Phys. Fluids 8 (1996) 2933) within an entire spectrum of nonlinear phenomena. Laboratory experiments support predicted behaviour in two regions of parameter space and highlight the importance of imperfections in the experimental apparatus.  相似文献
