The lowest singlet excited electronic state of water monomer in the gas phase is strictly dissociative along a OH stretch coordinate but changes its nature when the stretched OH moiety is hydrogen bonded to a neighboring water molecule. This work extends previous exploration of the water dimer excited singlet potential-energy surface, using computational methods that are reliable even at geometries well removed from the ground-state equilibrium. First, the hydrogen-bonded OH moiety is stretched far enough to establish the existence of a barrier that is sufficient to support a quasibound vibrational state of the OH oscillator near the Franck-Condon region. Second, the constraint of an icelike structure is relaxed, and it is found that a substantial fraction of liquidlike structures also supports a quasibound vibrational state. These potential-energy explorations on stretching of the hydrogen-bonded OH moiety in a water dimer are discussed as a model for understanding the initial dynamics upon excitation into the lowest excited singlet state of condensed water. The possibility is raised that the excited-state lifetime may be long enough to allow for exciton migration, which would provide a mechanism for energy transport in condensed water phases.  相似文献

Using a combined theoretical and experimental approach, we investigate the non-adiabatic dynamics of the prototypical ethylene (C(2)H(4)) molecule upon π → π? excitation. In this first part of a two part series, we focus on the lifetime of the excited electronic state. The femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectrum (TRPES) of ethylene is simulated based on our recent molecular dynamics simulation using the ab initio multiple spawning method with multi-state second order perturbation theory [H. Tao, B. G. Levine, and T. J. Martinez, J. Phys. Chem. A 113, 13656 (2009)]. We find excellent agreement between the TRPES calculation and the photoion signal observed in a pump-probe experiment using femtosecond vacuum ultraviolet (hν = 7.7 eV) pulses for both pump and probe. These results explain the apparent discrepancy over the excited state lifetime between theory and experiment that has existed for ten years, with experiments [e.g., P. Farmanara, V. Stert, and W. Radloff, Chem. Phys. Lett. 288, 518 (1998) and K. Kosma, S. A. Trushin, W. Fuss, and W. E. Schmid, J. Phys. Chem. A 112, 7514 (2008)] reporting much shorter lifetimes than predicted by theory. Investigation of the TRPES indicates that the fast decay of the photoion yield originates from both energetic and electronic factors, with the energetic factor playing a larger role in shaping the signal.  相似文献

The absorption spectra and excited state dipole moments of four differently substituted fulvenes have been investigated both experimentally and computationally. The results reveal that the excited state dipole moment of fulvenes reverses in the first excited singlet state when compared to the ground state. The oppositely polarized electron density distributions, which dominate the ground state and the first excited singlet state of fulvenes, respectively, reflect the reversed π-electron counting rules for aromaticity in the two states (4n + 2 vs. 4n, respectively). The results show that substituents indeed influence the polarity of fulvenes in the two states, however, cooperative interactions between the substituents and the fulvene moiety are most pronounced in the ground state.  相似文献

Singlet fluorescence lifetimes of adenosine, cytidine, guanosine, and thymidine, determined by femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy (Pecourt, J.-M. L.; Peon, J.; Kohler, B. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2000, 122, 9348. Pecourt, J.-M. L.; Peon, J.; Kohler, B. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2001, 123, 10370), show that the excited states produced by 263 nm light in these nucleosides decay in the subpicosecond range (290-720 fs). Ultrafast radiationless decay to the ground state greatly reduces the probability of photochemical damage. In this work we present a theoretical study of isolated cytosine, the chromophore of cytidine. The experimental lifetime of 720 fs indicates that there must be an ultrafast decay channel for this species. We have documented the possible decay channels and approximate energetics, using a valence-bond derived analysis to rationalize the structural details of the paths. The mechanism favored by our calculations and the experimental data involves (1) a two-mode decay coordinate composed of initial bond length inversion followed by internal vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) to populate a carbon pyramidalization mode, (2) a state switch between the pi,pi* and nO,pi* (excitation from oxygen lone pair) excited states, and (3) decay to the ground state through a conical intersention. A second decay path through the nN,pi* state (excitation from the nitrogen lone pair), with a higher barrier, involves out-of-plane bending of the amino substituent.  相似文献

Problems on the normal vibrations of pyrimidine in the ground and excited states are solved. The matrices of rotation and shift of normal coordinates due to electronic excitation and Franck-Condon integrals are calculated. The vibronic spectra of pyrimidine are interpreted. Based on this interpretation, bond lengths and bond angles in the electronically excited first singlet state of the molecule are calculated: C1C2 1.388 å, C2N3 1.366 å, N3C4 1.352 å, C-H 1.099 å; C6C1C2 105.5?, N3C4N5 127.8?, H2C2N3 110.1?.  相似文献

The dependence of the absorption and fluorescence spectra of 1-hydroxy-2-carboxy-anthraquinone on pH and Hammett acidity have been studied. This compound exhibits phototautomerism in its uncharged and its singly-charged anionic species in aqueous media. Its ground state (pK(a)) and lowest excited singlet-state (pK(a)( *)) dissociation constants have been determined by absorptiometric and fluorimetric titrations and the assignment of the pK(a) and pK( *)(a) values to the equilibria concerned has been carefully considered.  相似文献

A theoretical model for the ultrafast S1-->S0 internal conversion of cytosine is presented, in which a state switch from the initially prepared 1pipi* state to the out-of-plane deformed excited state of biradical character controls the rate of the S1(1pipi*) decay. This mechanism successfully accounts for the dramatically longer S1 lifetimes of 5-fluorocytosine and N-acetylcytosine relative to cytosine. The replacement of the C5 hydrogen atom by a methyl group is predicted to lead to a substantial, but not dramatic, increase in the S1 lifetime, also consistent with experiment. It is this ability to correctly predict the substituent effects that distinguishes the present model from the previously proposed mechanisms.  相似文献

Theoretical study was performed to investigate how the degree of hydration affects the structures and properties of the canonical form (keto-N9H) of guanine in the ground and lowest singlet pipi* excited state. This work is the continuation of our earlier work where we have studied the hydration of guanine in the first solvation shell with one, three, five, and six water molecules. In the present investigation, we have considered 7-13 water molecules in hydrating guanine. Ground-state geometries were optimized at the Hartree-Fock level, whereas the configuration interaction-singles (CIS) method was used for the excited-state geometry optimization. The 6-311G(d,p) basis set was used in all calculations. The harmonic vibrational frequency analysis was used to determine the nature of the optimized ground- and excited-state potential energy surfaces; all geometries were found to be minima at the respective potential surfaces. It was found that the degree of hydration has a significant influence on the excited-state structural nonplanarity of guanine. It is expected that excited-state dynamics of guanine will depend on the degree of hydration. Ground- and excited-state geometries of selected hydrated species were also optimized in the bulk water solution using the polarizable continuum model (PCM). It was found that bulk water solution generally does not have significant influence on the structure of the hydrated species. Effects of hydration on different stretching vibrations in the ground and excited states are also discussed.  相似文献

An upper limit to the relaxation time of the first excited electronic singlet state (S1) of azulene in cyclohexane has been determined for two excitation frequencies. The lifetimes of S1 excited by single picosecond duration optical pulses of frequency 18910 cm?1 and 16000 cm?1 are ? 1 ps and ? 2 ps respectively.  相似文献

We address the possibility of populating the lowest triplet state of cytosine by an "intrinsic"mechanism, namely, intersystem crossing (ISC) along the ultrafast internal conversion pathway of the electronically excited singlet species. For this purpose, we present a discussion of the ISC process and triplet-state reactivity based on theoretical analysis of the spin-orbit strength and the potential energy surfaces for the relevant singlet and triplet states of cytosine. High-level ab initio computations show that ISC is possible in wide regions of the singlet manifold along the reaction coordinate that controls the ultrafast internal conversion to the ground state. Thus, the ISC mechanism documented here provides a possibility to access the triplet state, which has a key role in the photochemistry of the nucleic acid bases.  相似文献

The resonance CARS spectra of the S1 states of rhodamine 6G, rhodamine B and sulforhodamine were obtained by choosing ω1 resonant with the S1 ← S0 and S3 ← S1 transitions simultaneously and by varying the laser beam power density of ω1 or ω2. The vibrational frequencies for the S0 and S1 states are similar, implying that the structure of the S1 state is not distorted significantly.  相似文献

Intramolecular processes of deactivation of 1,3-dimethyl-4-thiouracil (DMTU) from the second excited singlet (S2) (pi, pi*) and the lowest excited triplet (T1) (pi, pi*) states have been studied using perfluoro-1,3-dimethylcyclohexane (PFDMCH) as a solvent. The spectral and photophysical (PP) properties of DMTU in CCl4, hexane and water have also been described. For the first time, the fluorescence from S2 state DMTU has been observed. The picosecond lifetime of DMTU in the S2 state (tau(S2)) in PFDMCH has been proposed to be determined by a very fast intramolecular reversible process of hydrogen abstraction from the ortho methyl group by the thiocarbonyl group. The shortening of tau(S2) in CCl4 is interpreted to be caused by the intermolecular interactions between DMTU (S2) and the solvent. Results of the phosphorescence decay as a function of DMTU concentration were analyzed using the Stern-Volmer formalism, which enabled determination of the intrinsic lifetime of the T1 state (tau0(T1)) and rate constants of self-quenching (k(sq)). The lifetimes, tau0(T1), of DMTU in PFDMCH and CCl4 are much longer than the values hitherto obtained in more reactive solvents. The PP properties of DMTU both in the S2 and T1 states have been shown to be determined by the thiocarbonyl group.  相似文献

Two low-energy deactivation paths for singlet excited cytosine, one through a S1/S0 conical intersection of the ethylene type, and one through a conical intersection that involves the (nN, π*) state, are calculated in the presence of water. Water is included explicitly for several cytosine monohydrates, and as a bulk solvent, and the calculations are carried out at the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) and complete active space second order perturbation (CASPT2) levels of theory. The effect of water on the lowest-energy path through the ethylenic conical intersection is a lowering of the energy barrier. This is explained by stabilization of the excited state, which has zwitterionic character in the vicinity of the conical intersection due to its similarity with the conical intersection of ethylene. In contrast to this, the path that involves the (nN, π*) state is destabilized by hydrogen bonding, although the bulk solvent effect reduces the destabilization. Overall, this path should remain energetically accessible.  相似文献

The electronic absorption spectrum of pyridine N-oxide vapor in the region of the third electronic transition (43,000-46,000 cm-1) was recorded. The frequencies and intensities of vibronic bands, including the 0–0 band at 43,896 cm-1, were measured An assignment of the frequencies of fundamental vibrations in the third electronically excited state is suggested The matrices of rotation and shift of normal coordinates due to electronic excitation are calculated, and the vibronic spectrum of pyridine N-oxide is interpreted on the basis of these matrices. Tellurium can be determined polarographically in the range 10?5–10?8M by means of the Te0ads→Te2- reduction in 1M perchloric acid as supporting electrolyte. Pulse polarography, a.c. polarography and linear sweep cyclic voltammetry can be used to determine tellurium in the p.p.b. range. Copper(II), arsenic(III) and selenium(IV) interfere, but the interferences can be overcome by a standard addition method.  相似文献

The structure of the conformationally flexible acetyl fluoride molecule (CH3CFO and CD3CFO) in the ground (S0) and lowest excited triplet (T1) and singlet (S1) electronic states was calculated by different quantum-chemical methods (RHF, UHF, MP2, CASSCF). The equilibrium geometric parameters and harmonic vibrational frequencies of the molecules in these electronic states were estimated. The calculations demonstrated that the electronic excitation causes considerable conformational changes involving the rotation of the CH3(CD3) top and a substantial deviation of the CCFO carbonyl fragment from planarity. For large-amplitude vibrations, namely, for the torsional vibration in the S0 state and the torsional and inversion (nonplanar carbonyl fragment) vibrations in the T1 and S1 states, the quantum-mechanical problems were solved in one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) approximations. The results of calculations are in good agreement with experimental data.  相似文献

Gold porphyrins are often used as electron-accepting chromophores in artificial photosynthetic constructs. Because of the heavy atom effect, the gold porphyrin first-excited singlet state undergoes rapid intersystem crossing to form the triplet state. The lowest triplet state can undergo a reduction by electron donation from a nearby porphyrin or another moiety. In addition, it can be involved in triplet-triplet energy transfer interactions with other chromophores. In contrast, little has been known about the short-lived singlet excited state. In this work, ultrafast time-resolved absorption spectroscopy has been used to investigate the singlet excited state of Au(III) 5,15-bis(3,5-di-t-butylphenyl)-2,8,12,18,-tetraethyl-3,7,13,17-tetramethylporphyrin in ethanol solution. The excited singlet state is found to form with the laser pulse and decay with a time constant of 240 fs to give the triplet state. The triplet returns to the ground state with a life-time of 400 ps. The lifetime of the singlet state is comparable with the time constants for energy and photoinduced electron transfer in some model and natural photosynthetic systems. Thus, it is kinetically competent to take part in such processes in suitably designed supermolecular systems.  相似文献
