We describe an interior-point algorithm for monotone linear complementarity problems in which primal-dual affine scaling is used to generate the search directions. The algorithm is shown to have global and superlinear convergence with Q-order up to (but not including) two. The technique is shown to be consistent with a potential-reduction algorithm, yielding the first potential-reduction algorithm that is both globally and superlinearly convergent.Corresponding author. In this paper we show that a variant of the long-step affine scaling algorithm (with variable stepsizes) is two-step superlinearly convergent when applied to general linear programming (LP) problems. Superlinear convergence of the sequence of dual estimates is also established. For homogeneous LP problems having the origin as the unique optimal solution, we also show that 2/3 is a sharp upper bound on the (fixed) stepsize that provably guarantees that the sequence of primal iterates converge to the optimal solution along a unique direction of approach. Since the point to which the sequence of dual estimates converge depend on the direction of approach of the sequence of primal iterates, this result gives a plausible (but not accurate) theoretical explanation for why 2/3 is a sharp upper bound on the (fixed) stepsize that guarantees the convergence of the dual estimates. In this paper we develop a method for classifying an unknown data vector as belonging to one of several classes. This method is based on the statistical methods of maximum likehood and borrowed strength estimation. We develop an MPEC procedure (for Mathematical Program with Equilibrium Constraints) for the classification of a multi-dimensional observation, using a finite set of observed training data as the inputs to a bilevel optimization problem. We present a penalty interior point method for solving the resulting MPEC and report numerical results for a multispectral minefield classification application. Related approaches based on conventional maximum likehood estimation and a bivariate normal mixture model, as well as alternative surrogate classification objective functions, are described. We study the problem of solving a constrained system of nonlinear equations by a combination of the classical damped Newton method for (unconstrained) smooth equations and the recent interior point potential reduction methods for linear programs, linear and nonlinear complementarity problems. In general, constrained equations provide a unified formulation for many mathematical programming problems, including complementarity problems of various kinds and the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker systems of variational inequalities and nonlinear programs. Combining ideas from the damped Newton and interior point methods, we present an iterative algorithm for solving a constrained system of equations and investigate its convergence properties. Specialization of the algorithm and its convergence analysis to complementarity problems of various kinds and the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker systems of variational inequalities are discussed in detail. We also report the computational results of the implementation of the algorithm for solving several classes of convex programs. Shortest paths algorithms: Theory and experimental evaluation   总被引:40,自引:0,他引:40
We conduct an extensive computational study of shortest paths algorithms, including some very recent algorithms. We also suggest new algorithms motivated by the experimental results and prove interesting theoretical results suggested by the experimental data. Our computational study is based on several natural problem classes which identify strengths and weaknesses of various algorithms. These problem classes and algorithm implementations form an environment for testing the performance of shortest paths algorithms. The interaction between the experimental evaluation of algorithm behavior and the theoretical analysis of algorithm performance plays an important role in our research. Error bounds for analytic systems and their applications   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Using a 1958 result of Lojasiewicz, we establish an error bound for analytic systems consisting of equalities and inequalities defined by real analytic functions. In particular, we show that over any bounded region, the distance from any vectorx in the region to the solution set of an analytic system is bounded by a residual function, raised to a certain power, evaluated atx. For quadratic systems satisfying certain nonnegativity assumptions, we show that this exponent is equal to 1/2. We apply the error bounds to the Karush—Kuhn—Tucker system of a variational inequality, the affine variational inequality, the linear and nonlinear complementarity problem, and the 0–1 integer feasibility problem, and obtain new error bound results for these problems. The latter results extend previous work for polynomial systems and explain why a certain square-root term is needed in an error bound for the (monotone) linear complementarity problem. The research of this author is based on work supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada under grant OPG0090391.The research of this author is based on work supported by the National Science Foundation under grants DDM-9104078 and CCR-9213739 and by the Office of Naval Research under grant 4116687-01.  相似文献

Co-volume methods for degenerate parabolic problems   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Summary A complementary volume (co-volume) technique is used to develop a physically appealing algorithm for the solution of degenerate parabolic problems, such as the Stefan problem. It is shown that, these algorithms give rise to a discrete semigroup theory that parallels the continuous problem. In particular, the discrete Stefan problem gives rise to nonlinear semigroups in both the discreteL 1 andH –1 spaces. The first author was supported by a grant from the Hughes foundation, and the second author was supported by the National Science Foundation Grant No. DMS-9002768 while this work was undertaken. In this paper, we study the problem of predicting the acceleration of a set of rigid, 3-dimensional bodies in contact with Coulomb friction. The nonlinearity of Coulomb's law leads to a nonlinear complementarity formulation of the system model. This model is used in conjunction with the theory of quasi-variational inequalities to prove for the first time that multi-rigid-body systems with all contacts rolling always has a solution under a feasibility-type condition. The analysis of the more general problem with sliding and rolling contacts presents difficulties that motivate our consideration of a relaxed friction law. The corresponding complementarity formulations of the multi-rigid-body contact problem are derived and existence of solutions of these models is established. On the convergence of Newton iterations to non-stationary points   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We study conditions under which line search Newton methods for nonlinear systems of equations and optimization fail due to the presence of singular non-stationary points. These points are not solutions of the problem and are characterized by the fact that Jacobian or Hessian matrices are singular. It is shown that, for systems of nonlinear equations, the interaction between the Newton direction and the merit function can prevent the iterates from escaping such non-stationary points. The unconstrained minimization problem is also studied, and conditions under which false convergence cannot occur are presented. Several examples illustrating failure of Newton iterations for constrained optimization are also presented. The paper also shows that a class of line search feasible interior methods cannot exhibit convergence to non-stationary points. Many parallel iterative algorithms for solving symmetric, positive definite problems proceed by solving in each iteration, a number of independent systems on subspaces. The convergence of such methods is determined by the spectrum of the sums of orthogonal projections on those subspaces, while the convergence of a related sequential method is determined by the spectrum of the product of complementary projections. We study spectral properties of sums of orthogonal projections and in the case of two projections, characterize the spectrum of the sum completely in terms of the spectrum of the product. This work was supported in part by the Norwegian Research Council for Science and the Humanities under grant D.01.08.054 and by The Royal Norwegian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research under grant IT2.28.28484; also supported in part by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research under grant AFOSR-86-0126 and by the National Science Foundation under grant DMS-8704169.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a long-step target-following methodology for linear programming. This is a general framework, that enables us to analyze various long-step primal-dual algorithms in the literature in a short and uniform way. Among these are long-step central and weighted path-following methods and algorithms to compute a central point or a weighted center. Moreover, we use it to analyze a method with the property that starting from an initial noncentral point, generates iterates that simultaneously get closer to optimality and closer to centrality. This work is completed with the support of a research grant from SHELL.The first author is supported by the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), grant 611-304-028.The fourth author is supported by the Swiss National Foundation for Scientific Research, grant 12-34002.92.  相似文献

We study path problems in skew-symmetric graphs. These problems generalize the standard graph reachability and shortest path problems. We establish combinatorial solvability criteria and duality relations for the skew-symmetric path problems and use them to design efficient algorithms for these problems. The algorithms presented are competitive with the fastest algorithms for the standard problems. This research was done while the first author was at Stanford University Computer Science Department, supported in part by ONR Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award N00014-91-J-1855, NSF Presidential Young Investigator Grant CCR-8858097 with matching funds from AT&T, DEC, and 3M, and a grant from Powell Foundation. This research was done while the second author was visiting Stanford University Computer Science Department and supported by the above mentioned NSF and Powell Foundation Grants.  相似文献

We study the problem of minimizing the total weighted tardiness when scheduling unti-length jobs on a single machine, in the presence of large sets of identical jobs. Previously known algorithms, which do not exploit the set structure, are at best pseudo-polynomial, and may be prohibitively inefficient when the set sizes are large. We give a polynomial algorithm for the problem, whose number of operations is independent of the set sizes. The problem is reformulated as an integer program with a quadratic, non-separable objective and transportation constraints. Employing methods of real analysis, we prove a tight proximity result between the integer solution to that problem and a fractional solution of a related problem. The related problem is shown to be polynomially solvable, and a rounding algorithm applied to its solution gives the optimal integer solution to the original problem.Supported in part by the National Science Foundation under grant ECS-85-01988, and by the Office of Naval Research under grant N00014-88-K-0377.Supported in part by Allon Fellowship, by Air Force grants 89-0512 and 90-0008 and by DIMACS (Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science), a National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center—NSF-STC88-09648. We consider a modification of a path-following infeasible-interior-point algorithm described by Wright. In the new algorithm, we attempt to improve each major iterate by reusing the coefficient matrix factors from the latest step. We show that the modified algorithm has similar theoretical global convergence properties to those of the earlier algorithm while its asymptotic convergence rate can be made superquadratic by an appropriate parameter choice. The significant gap between peak and realized performance of parallel systems motivates the need for performance analysis. In order to predict the performance of a class of parallel multilevel ILU preconditioner (PBILUM), we build two performance prediction models for both the preconditioner construction phase and the solution phase. These models combine theoretical features of the preconditioners with estimates on computation cost, communications overhead, etc. Experimental simulations show that our model predication based on certain reasonable assumptions is close to the simulation results. The models may be used to predict the performance of this class of parallel preconditioners.*The research work of the authors was supported in part by the U.S. National Science Foundation under grants CCR-9988165, CCR-0092532, ACR-0202934, and ACR-234270, by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science under grant DE-FG02-02ER45961, by the Kentucky Science & Engineering Foundation under grant KSEF-02-264-RED-002.  相似文献

Linear complexity algorithms are derived for the solution of a linear system of equations with the coefficient matrix represented as a sum of diagonal and semiseparable matrices. LDU-factorization algorithms for such matrices and their inverses are also given. The master-slave paradigm finds important applications in parallel computer scheduling, semiconductor testing, machine scheduling, transportation, maintenance management and other industrial settings. In the master-slave model considered in this paper a set of jobs is to be processed by a system of processors. Each job consists of a preprocessing task, a slave task and a postprocessing task that must be executed in this order. The pre- and post-processing tasks are to be processed by a master processor while the slave task is processed by a slave processor. In this paper, we motivate the master-slave model and develop bounded performance approximation algorithms for the unconstrained makespan minimization problem as well as for multiple master systems. This work was supported in part by the National Science Foundation under grant MIP-9103379 and the Army Research Office under grant DAA H04-95-1-0111.  相似文献

This paper shows, by means of an operator called asplitting operator, that the Douglas—Rachford splitting method for finding a zero of the sum of two monotone operators is a special case of the proximal point algorithm. Therefore, applications of Douglas—Rachford splitting, such as the alternating direction method of multipliers for convex programming decomposition, are also special cases of the proximal point algorithm. This observation allows the unification and generalization of a variety of convex programming algorithms. By introducing a modified version of the proximal point algorithm, we derive a new, generalized alternating direction method of multipliers for convex programming. Advances of this sort illustrate the power and generality gained by adopting monotone operator theory as a conceptual framework. This paper is drawn largely from the dissertation research of the first author.
