A disordered photonic crystal with spectral degeneracies in the form of Dirac nodes is considered. Disorder can create a random gap at the Dirac nodes, which leads to the formation of random edge modes. We study the distribution of these edge modes and find from symmetry considerations that the discrete anisotropy of the photonic crystal is spontaneously broken for the propagation of photons from a local photon source. This effect can be understood as the spontaneous creation of a ray mode or as the creation of a one‐dimensional waveguide in a two‐dimensional photonic crystal through strong random scattering. The phenomenon must be distinguished from Anderson localization of photons in a single band crystal and can be considered as angular localization, since it creates geometric states rather than confining the photons to an area of the size of the localization length. The propagation of the photon intensity is described by a Fokker‐Planck equation, whose drift term is determined by the spectrum of the photonic crystal near the Dirac node.  相似文献

Dirac费米子作为粒子物理中的基本粒子之一,其理论在近年来蓬勃发展的拓扑电子理论领域中被广泛提及并用来刻画具有Dirac费米子性质的电子态.这种特殊的能态通常被称为Dirac点,在能谱上表现为两条不同能带之间的线性交叉点.由于Dirac点往往是发生拓扑相变的转变点,因而也被视为实现各种拓扑态的重要母态.作为可与拓扑电子体系类比的拓扑光子晶体因其独特的潜在应用价值也受到人们的广泛关注,实现包含Dirac点的光子能带已成为研究拓扑光子晶体的核心课题.本文基于电子的拓扑理论,简要地回顾了Dirac点在光子系统中的研究进展,特别介绍了如何在光子晶体中利用不同晶格对称性实现在高对称点/线上的Dirac点,以及由Dirac点衍生的Weyl点.  相似文献

We demonstrate that light propagation in strongly modulated 2D/3D photonic crystals (PhCs) becomes refraction-like in the vicinity of the photonic bandgap, which is contrary to the fact that light propagation in weakly modulated PhCs is very different from refraction and thus the definition of refraction index becomes meaningless. Such a crystal behaves like a material having an effective refractive index controllable by the band structure. This situation is analogous to the effective-mass approximation in electron-band theory. The propagation states having a negative effective index exhibit unusual properties, such as mirror-like imaging effect, image-transfer effect. These properties are confirmed by finite-difference time-domain simulations.  相似文献

We numerically characterize a novel type of a photonic crystal waveguide, which consists of several rows of periodically arranged dielectric cylinders. In such a nanopillar photonic crystal waveguide, light confinement is due to the total internal reflection. A nanopillar waveguide is a multimode waveguide, where the number of modes is equal to the number of rows building the waveguide. The strong coupling between individual waveguides leads to the proposal of an ultrashort directional coupler based on nanopillar waveguides. We present a systematic analysis of the dispersion and transmission efficiency of nanopillar photonic crystal waveguides and directional couplers. Plane wave expansion and finite difference time domain methods were used to characterize numerically nanopillar photonic crystal structures both in two- and three-dimensional spaces.  相似文献

We study the electromagnetic surface wave localizing, the so-called surface Tamm states, at an interface separating a left-handed metamaterial (LHM) and a semi-infinite one-dimensional photonic crystal made of alternative left-handed metamaterial and right-handed materials. We show that the existence of metamaterial causes the Tamm states with backward energy flow and allows flexible control of dispersion properties of the surface modes. We study the effect of the physical parameters of the photonic crystal on the dispersion properties and the group velocity of the Tamm states. We also study dispersion properties of the Tamm states in higher order photonic band gaps of the photonic crystal and compare our results with the case when the LHM medium is replaced by a right-handed material (RHM).  相似文献

基于光子晶体光纤中脉冲演化遵循的非线性薛定谔方程, 用数值模拟的方法分别研究了飞秒脉冲在单零色散点和双零色散点光子晶体光纤中超连续谱的产生和色散波的孤子俘获现象. 结果表明: 与单零色散点光子晶体光纤相比, 双零色散点光子晶体光纤产生的超连续谱既包含了蓝移色散波, 又包含了红移色散波, 且当满足群速度匹配时, 孤子通过四波混频不仅能俘获蓝移色散波, 而且能俘获红移色散波, 从而产生新的俘获波频谱成分. 为了清楚地观察脉冲传输的时频特性, 通过模拟交叉相关频率分辨光学开关技术, 得到了孤子俘获色散波的演化过程. 关键词: 超连续谱 色散波 孤子俘获 光子晶体光纤  相似文献

We calculated the local density of state for various positions in a photonic crystal of honeycomb lattice to study how the spontaneous emission rate of a radiating dipole is altered in the presence of the photonic crystal. The local density of states is found to be position-sensitive and its value can be enhanced or depressed relative to the density of states, depending on the location of the dipole. Our study shows that the density of states tends to underestimate the effect of a photonic crystal on the prohibition of light propagation, while on the contrary tends to overestimate the effect on the enhancement of light emission. The calculations also indicate that it is possible to tailor the spontaneous emission of an active medium by careful selecting its location in the photonic crystal. The results are helpful in determining the insertion location of the active medium and in evaluating the efficiency of active photonic crystal devices such as light-emitting diodes or lasers.  相似文献

The origin of non-dispersive flat band modes for a quasi-one dimensional square-kagomé ladder network is explored analytically by virtue of the real space renormalization group (RSRG) technique. A section of the eigenstates is non-diffusive i.e., localized within a cluster of sub-lattice sites partly by the destructive type of quantum interference and partly by the physical boundary created by the site with zero wave function amplitude. By making the amplitude vanish at the selective sites it becomes possible to confine the incoming excitation within the trapping cell leading to the formation of compact localized states. The effective mass of the particle becomes infinitely large corresponding to those self-localized modes and hence the mobility of the wave train becomes vanishingly small. This quenched kinetic energy leads to a momentum independent contribution to a dispersion curve. The present analysis is corroborated by numerical calculation of spectral landscape and the corresponding dispersion profile. The application of uniform magnetic flux may lead to a comprehensive engineering of the position as well as the curvature of the band. Also, one-to-one mapping between electronic case and photonic case within the tight-binding framework helps us to study the photonic localization in an analogous single mode wave guide system. The concept of slow light eventually introduces the possibility of spatial compression of light energy.  相似文献

The photonic density of states (PDOS), like its electronic counterpart, is one of the key physical quantities governing a variety of phenomena and hence PDOS manipulation is the route to new photonic devices. The PDOS is conventionally altered by exploiting the resonance within a device such as a microcavity or a bandgap structure like a photonic crystal. Here we show that nanostructured metamaterials with hyperbolic dispersion can dramatically enhance the photonic density of states paving the way for metamaterial-based PDOS engineering.  相似文献

We point out that electromagnetic one-way edge modes analogous to quantum Hall edge states, originally predicted by Raghu and Haldane in 2D photonic crystals possessing Dirac point-derived band gaps, can appear in more general settings. We show that the TM modes in a gyromagnetic photonic crystal can be formally mapped to electronic wave functions in a periodic electromagnetic field, so that the only requirement for the existence of one-way edge modes is that the Chern number for all bands below a gap is nonzero. In a square-lattice yttrium-iron-garnet crystal operating at microwave frequencies, which lacks Dirac points, time-reversal breaking is strong enough that the effect should be easily observable. For realistic material parameters, the edge modes occupy a 10% band gap. Numerical simulations of a one-way waveguide incorporating this crystal show 100% transmission across strong defects.  相似文献

We present a detailed study of out-of-plane scattering losses in a 1D approximation of 2D photonic crystal slabs. In 2D photonic crystals with a waveguide structure in the third dimension, the periodic structure (in a lot of applications a 2D arrangement of holes etched through the core and cladding) will cause light to scatter out of the waveguide plane. We studied the out-of-plane scattering losses of these holes using a 2D approximation of this 3D structure, with etched slots instead of holes. Our simulation techniques included mode expansion with PML and FDTD. We will present the influence of the refractive index contrast between core and cladding of the layered structure. We show that the losses increase with higher index contrast between core and cladding, but that with very high index contrasts and under the right circumstances light can be coupled into lossless Bloch modes.  相似文献

最近研究表明,两束交叉激光脉冲在等离子体中传播时,可以诱导生成周期等离子体密度调制(或称等离子体布拉格光栅). 分别利用传输矩阵法和耦合模理论,推导了激光斜入射时等离子体光栅的色散关系. 两种方法均表明,均匀等离子体光栅存在着光子带隙结构,并且在带隙附近有强烈的色散. 当激光斜入射时,带隙结构会呈现不同的偏振特性:S偏振光的带隙宽度随着入射角的增大而逐渐变宽,而P偏振光的带隙宽度随着入射角的增大先迅速变窄,在布儒斯特角入射时带隙消失,然后又随着入射角的增大而迅速变宽. 超宽的光子带隙和超高的激光损伤阈值,使得等离子体光栅有望成为一种新型的操纵强激光脉冲的光子器件. 关键词: 等离子体光栅 传输矩阵法 耦合模理论 光子带隙  相似文献

提出了一种调节液晶光子晶体光子带隙的方法。二维三角介质柱形光子晶体位于2块熔凝石英片之间,在介质柱之间填充各向同性排列的液晶,受偏振紫外光照射后,光诱导液晶分子定向排列,通过光诱导液晶分子取向改变液晶的折射率。数值模拟结果表明:通过外界光场控制所填充的向列相液晶分子的方向可以对这种二维三角形介质柱光子晶体的禁带结构进行调节。该可调光子晶体可控制波导中TM模和TE模的选择性传输,因而可应用于制作全光光开关。  相似文献

We have theoretically studied the modal dispersion characteristics, group velocity, and effective group as well as phase index of refraction of ternary one-dimensional (1D) plasma photonic band gap (PBG) structure having periodic multilayers of three different materials in one unit cell. The dispersion characteristics related for such structure is derived by solving Maxwell wave equation based on principle of Kronig-Penny model. From the computed results we observe that the dispersion characteristics of such structure also show the frequency gap and cutoffs as found in (binary) one-dimensional plasma photonic crystal. The frequency gap is shown to become larger with the increase of plasma frequency as well as plasma width. It is seen that such structure provide additional degree of freedom to control dispersion characteristic, group velocity and effective index of refraction compared to conventional one-dimensional plasma photonic crystal.  相似文献

研究了双带型光子晶体中双V型四能级原子自发辐射的辐射谱.双V型四能级原子同时与真空热库和双带型光子晶体热库耦合.研究发现双V型四能级原子自发辐射谱中有三种不同原因可能引起的黑线:第一种是由于量子干涉效应;第二种是由于各向同性光子晶体带边处态密度具有奇异性;第三种是真空场中的量子干涉和光子晶体禁带内态密度为零共同作用的结果.通过移动光子晶体的带边位置,在各向同性光子晶体带边引入光滑因子,以及在光子晶体中引入缺陷等对这三种黑线的影响,对上述结果进行了分析和讨论. 关键词: 双带型光子晶体 双V型四能级原子 黑线  相似文献

一种阶梯结构的色散平坦光子晶体光纤的研究   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3  
以多极法理论为基础,提出了一种阶梯结构的光子晶体光纤.通过改变其内四层的三个结构参量(内两层孔孔径,外两层孔孔径和孔间距),实现色散绝对值在1.1~1.8μm的波段内变化仅为0.05~2 ps/(km·nm)的平坦甚至超平坦的特性.在此情况下对其有效模场面积进行数值模拟,充分展示了达到色散平坦和超平坦时,相对于传统光子晶体光纤,此种结构的光纤对芯区内光场的局域能力有很大程度的增强,其有效模场面积可仅为传统光子晶体光纤的1/30.最后,经过大量的数值计算和理论分析,归纳出若要此种阶梯结构的光纤在1.1~1.8μm的波段内达到色散平坦甚至超平坦特性的设计依据.  相似文献

利用蜂窝结构光子晶体具有两个范围较大绝对带隙的特性,设计新型六角蜂窝结构光子晶体异质结,采用平面波展开和超晶胞相结合的方法来研究异质结的能带结构特性.给出异质结的结构和相应的能带图,分析异质结界面传导模,研究两侧结构作横向拉开和侧向滑移时对传导模的影响,讨论这些结构的实际可行性.计算结果表明,没有任何晶格移动,此种结构异质结在绝对带隙中就有导模存在,两边晶格横向拉开对导模影响较大,而侧向滑移的影响则较小. 关键词: 光子晶体 异质结 光子带隙 超晶胞  相似文献

研究了几种两端有慢变周期结构的光子晶体的能带特性,研究发现,通过在普能光子晶体两端添加适当的慢变周期结构,可以使光子晶体的光子禁带区向短波区或向长波区扩展,也可以同时向短波和长波两个区域扩展,与普通结构的光子晶体的光子禁带宽度相比,可以获得400%以上的禁带区宽度的拓展。  相似文献
