The purpose of this paper is to present and compare two statistical models for predicting the effect of collisions on particle velocities and stresses in bidisperse turbulent flows. These models start from a kinetic equation for the probability density function (PDF) of the particle velocity distribution in a homogeneous anisotropic turbulent flow. The kinetic equation describes simultaneously particle–turbulence and particle–particle interactions. The paper is focused on deriving the collision terms in the governing equations of the PDF moments. One of the collision models is based on a Grad-like expansion for the PDF of the velocity distributions of two particles. The other model stems from a Grad-like expansion for the joint fluid–particle PDF. The validity of these models is explored by comparing with Lagrangian simulations of particle tracking in uniformly sheared and isotropic turbulent flows generated by LES. Notwithstanding the fact that the fluid turbulence may be isotropic, the particle velocity fluctuations are anisotropic due to the impact of gravitational settling. Comparisons of the model predictions and the numerical simulations show encouraging agreement.  相似文献

The partially integrated transport modelling (PITM) method can be viewed as a continuous approach for hybrid RANS/LES modelling allowing seamless coupling between the RANS and the LES regions. The subgrid turbulence quantities are thus calculated from spectral equations depending on the varying spectral cutoff location [Schiestel, R., Dejoan, A., 2005. Towards a new partially integrated transport model for coarse grid and unsteady turbulent flow simulations. Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics 18, 443–468; Chaouat, B., Schiestel, R., 2005. Physics of Fluids, 17 (6)] The PITM method can be applied to almost all statistical models to derive its hybrid LES counterpart. In the present work, the PITM version based on the transport equations for the turbulent Reynolds stresses together with the dissipation transport rate equation is now developed in a general formulation based on a new accurate energy spectrum function E(κ) valid in both large and small eddy ranges that allows to calibrate more precisely the csgs2 function involved in the subgrid dissipation rate sgs transport equation. The model is also proposed here in an extended form which remains valid in low Reynolds number turbulent flows. This is achieved by considering a characteristic turbulence length-scale based on the total turbulent energy and the total dissipation rate taking into account the subgrid and resolved parts of the dissipation rate. These improvements allow to consider a large range of flows including various free flows as well as bounded flows. The present model is first tested on the decay of homogeneous isotropic turbulence by referring to the well known experiment of Comte-Bellot and Corrsin. Then, initial perturbed spectra E(κ) with a peak or a defect of energy are considered for analysing the model capabilities in strong non-equilibrium flow situations. The second test case is the classical fully turbulent channel flow that allows to assess the performance of the model in non-homogeneous flows characterised by important anisotropy effects. Different simulations are performed on coarse and refined meshes for checking the grid independence of solutions as well as the consistency of the subgrid-scale model when the filter width is changed. A special attention is devoted to the sharing out of the energy between the subgrid-scales and the resolved scales. Both the mean velocity and the turbulent stress computations are compared with data from direct numerical simulations.  相似文献

The turbulence modeling in probability density function (PDF) methods is studied through applications to turbulent swirling and nonswirling co-axial jets and to the temporal shear layer. The PDF models are formulated at the level of either the joint PDF of velocity and turbulent frequency or the joint PDF of velocity, wave vector, and turbulent frequency. The methodology of wave vector models (WVMs) is based on an exact representation of rapidly distorted homogeneous turbulence, and several models are constructed in a previous paper [1]. A revision to a previously presented conditional-mean turbulent frequency model [2] is constructed to improve the numerical implementation of the model for inhomogeneous turbulent flows. A pressure transport model is also implemented in conjunction with several velocity models. The complete model yields good comparisons with available experimental data for a low swirl case. The individual models are also assessed in terms of their significance to an accurate solution of the co-axial jets, and a comparison is made to a similar assessment for the temporal shear layer. The crucial factor in determining the quality of the co-axial jet simulations is demonstrated to be the proper specification of a parameter ratio in the modeled source of turbulent frequency. The parameter specification is also shown to be significant in the temporal shear layer.  相似文献

An experimental study of the propagation of high-frequency acoustic waves through grid-generated turbulence by means of an ultrasound technique is discussed. Experimental data were obtained for ultrasonic wave propagation downstream of heated and non-heated grids in a wind tunnel. A semi-analytical acoustic propagation model that allows the determination of the spatial correlation functions of the flow field is developed based on the classical flowmeter equation and the statistics of the travel time of acoustic waves traveling through the kinematic and thermal turbulence. The basic flowmeter equation is reconsidered in order to take into account sound speed fluctuations and turbulent velocity fluctuations. It allows deriving an integral equation that relates the correlation functions of travel time, sound speed fluctuations and turbulent velocity fluctuations. Experimentally measured travel time statistics of data with and without grid heating are approximated by an exponential function and used to analytically solve the integral equation. The reconstructed correlation functions of the turbulent velocity and sound speed fluctuations are presented. The power spectral density of the turbulent velocity and sound speed fluctuations are calculated.  相似文献

A new subgrid-scale model called the spectral-dynamic model is proposed. It consists of a refinement of spectral eddy-viscosity models taking into account nondeveloped turbulence in the subgrid-scales. The proposed correction, which is derived from eddy-damped quasi-normal Markovian statistical theory, is based on an adjustment of the turbulent eddy-viscosity coefficient to the deviation of the spectral slope (at small scales) with respect to the standard Kolmogorov law. The spectral-dynamic model is applied to large eddy simulation (LES) of rotating and nonrotating turbulent plane channel flows. It is shown that the proposed refinement allows for clear improvement of the statistical predictions due to a correct prediction of the near-wall behavior. Cases of rotating and nonrotating low (DNS) and high Reynolds (LES) numbers are then compared. It is shown that the principal structural features of the rotating turbulent channel flow are reproduced by the LES, such as the presence of the near-zero mean absolute vorticity region, the modification of the anisotropic character of the flow (with respect to the nonrotating case), the enhancement of flow organization, and the inhibition of the high- and low-speed streaks near the anticyclonic wall. Only a moderate Reynolds number dependence is exhibited, resulting in a more unstable character of the longitudinal large-scale roll cells at high Reynolds number, and a slight increase of the laminarization tendency on the cyclonic side of the channel. A review of existing basic turbulence modeling approaches reveals the need for the development of unified turbulence models which can be used continuously as filter density function (FDF) or probability density function (PDF) methods, large eddy simulation (LES) or Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) methods. It is then shown that such unified stochastic and deterministic turbulence models can be constructed by explaining the dependence of the characteristic time scale of velocity fluctuations on the scale considered. The unified stochastic model obtained generalizes usually applied FDF and PDF models. The unified deterministic turbulence model that is implied by the stochastic model recovers and extends well-known linear and nonlinear LES and RANS models for the subgrid-scale and Reynolds stress tensor.   相似文献

This article develops a parallel large-eddy simulation (LES) with a one-equation subgrid-scale (SGS) model based on the Galerkin finite element method and three-dimensional (3D) brick elements. The governing filtered Navier–Stokes equations were solved by a second-order accurate fractional-step method, which decomposed the implicit velocity–pressure coupling in incompressible flow and segregated the solution to the advection and diffusion terms. The transport equation for the SGS turbulent kinetic energy was solved to calculate the SGS processes. This FEM LES model was applied to study the turbulence of the benchmark open channel flow at a Reynolds number Reτ = 180 (based on the friction velocity and channel height) using different model constants and grid resolutions. By comparing the turbulence statistics calculated by the current model with those obtained from direct numerical simulation (DNS) and experiments in literature, an optimum set of model constants for the current FEM LES model was established. The budgets of turbulent kinetic energy and vertical Reynolds stress were then analysed for the open channel flow. Finally, the flow structures were visualised to further reveal some important characteristics. It was demonstrated that the current model with the optimum model constants can predict well the organised structure near the wall and free surface, and can be further applied to other fundamental and engineering applications.  相似文献

The paper presents adaptive mesh moving methods for large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent flows. With this approach, a given number of grid points is redistributed with respect to an appropriately selected criterion. The Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian formulation is applied to solve the governing equation on moving grids employing a collocated finite volume formulation. A dynamic moving mesh partial differential equation based on a variational principle is solved for the corner points of the grid by means of a dedicated solver. Adaptation is performed in a statistical sense so that statistical quantities of interest are employed. Various LES-specific design criteria and combination of them are proposed, such as the time-averaged gradient of streamwise velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and production rate. These are investigated in the framework of elementary and balanced monitor functions. These are tested for the three-dimensional flow in a channel with periodic constrictions. The numerical results are compared to a highly resolved LES reference solution. The independence of the moving mesh method from the initial LES is shown, and its potential to improve the efficient resolution of turbulent flow features is demonstrated.  相似文献

在传统水沙输移数值模拟研究中一般采用雷诺时均模拟技术(Reynolds-averaged simulation,RANS).与RANS相比,大涡模拟技术(large eddy simulation,LES)能够更加精确反映细部流动结构,计算机的发展使得采用LES探讨水流和泥沙运动规律成为可能.本文尝试给出净冲刷条件下悬沙计算的边界条件,采用动态亚格子模式对循环槽道和长槽道中的水流运动和泥沙输移进行了三维大涡模拟研究.利用直接数值模拟(direct numerical simulation,DNS)结果对LES模型进行了率定,计算结果符合良好,在此基础上初步探讨了泥沙浓度、湍动强度和湍动通量等的分布特征.结果表明,净冲刷条件下输沙平衡时泥沙浓度符合Rouse公式分布,单向流动中泥沙浓度沿着流向逐渐增大.泥沙浓度湍动强度和湍动通量都在近底部达到最大值,沿着垂向迅速减小.湍动黏性系数和扩散系数基本上在水深中间处达到最大.湍动Schmidt数沿着水深方向不是常数,在近底部和自由水面附近较大,在水深中间处较小.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is twofold: (i) to present statistical models that describe particle–turbulence interactions as well as particle–particle collisions and (ii) to gain a better understanding of the effect of inter-particle collisions on transport, deposition, and preferential concentration of heavy particles in turbulent channel flows. The models presented are based on a kinetic equation for the probability density function of the particle velocity distribution in anisotropic turbulent flow. The model predictions compare reasonable well with numerical simulations and properly reproduce the crucial trends of computations.  相似文献

This work is concerned with the investigation of fluid-mechanical behaviour and the performance of different subgrid-scale models for LES in the numerical prediction of a confined axisymmetrical bluff-body flow. Four subgrid-scale turbulence models comprising the Smagorinsky model, Dynamic Smagorinsky model, WALE model and subgrid turbulent kinetic energy model, are validated and compared directly against the experimental data. Two different mesh counts are used for the LES studies, one with a higher mesh resolution in the shear layer than the other. It is found that increasing the mesh resolution improves the time-averaged fluctuating velocity profiles, but has less effect on the time-averaged filtered velocity profiles. A comparison against experiment shows that the recirculation zone length is well predicted using LES. The accuracy of the four different subgrid scale models is then assessed by comparing the LES results using the dense mesh with the experiment. Comparisons with the time-averaged axial and radial velocity profiles demonstrate that LES displays good agreement with the experimental data, with the essential flow features captured both qualitative and quantitatively. The subgrid velocity also matches well with the experimental results, but a slight underprediction of the inner shear layer is observed for all subgrid models. In general, it is found that the Smagorinsky and WALE models are more dissipative than the Dynamic Smagorinsky model and subgrid TKE model. Comparison of the spectra against the experiment shows that LES can capture dominant features of the turbulent flow with reasonable accuracy, and weak spectral peaks related to the Kevin-Helmholtz instability and helical vortex shedding are present.  相似文献

In this study a detached eddy simulation (DES) model, which belongs to the group of hybrid URANS/LES turbulence models, is used for the simulation of vortex shedding behind a triangular obstacle. In the near wall region or in regions where the grid resolution is not sufficiently fine to resolve smaller structures, the two-equation RANS shear-stress transport (SST) model is used. In the other regions with higher grid resolution a LES model, which uses a transport equation for the turbulent subgrid energy, is applied. The DES model is first investigated for two standard test cases, namely decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence and the backward facing step, respectively. For the decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence test case the evolution of the energy spectra in wavenumber space for different times are studied for both the DES and a Smagorinsky type LES model. Different grid resolutions are analyzed with a special emphasis on the modeling constant connecting the filter length scale to the grid size. The results are compared to experimental data. The backward facing step test case is used to study the model behavior for a case with a transition region between a RANS modeling approach close to the wall and LES based modeling in the intense shear flow region. The final application is the simulation of the vortex shedding behind a triangular obstacle. First, the influence of the inlet condition formulation is studied in detail as they can have a significant influence especially for LES based models. Detailed comparisons between simulation and experiment for the flow structure past the obstacle and statistical quantities such as the shedding frequency are shown. Finally the additional temporal and spatial information provided by the DES model is used to show the predicted anisotropy of turbulence.  相似文献

We present an original timesaving joint RANS/LES approach to simulate turbulent premixed combustion. It is intended mainly for industrial applications where LES may not be practical. It is based on successive RANS/LES numerical modelling, where turbulent characteristics determined from RANS simulations are used in LES equations for estimation of the subgrid chemical source and viscosity. This approach has been developed using our TFC premixed combustion model, which is based on a generalization of the Kolmogorov’s ideas. We assume existence of small-scale statistically equilibrium structures not only of turbulence but also of the reaction zones. At the same time, non-equilibrium large-scale structures of reaction sheets and turbulent eddies are described statistically by model combustion and turbulence equations in RANS simulations or follow directly without modelling in LES. Assumption of small-scale equilibrium gives an opportunity to express the mean combustion rate (controlled by small-scale coupling of turbulence and chemistry) in the RANS and LES sub-problems in terms of integral or subgrid parameters of turbulence and the chemical time, i.e. the definition of the reaction rate is similar to that of the mean dissipation rate in turbulence models where it is expressed in terms of integral or subgrid turbulent parameters. Our approach therefore renders compatible the combustion and turbulent parts of the RANS and LES sub-problems and yields reasonable agreement between the RANS and averaged LES results. Combining RANS simulations of averaged fields with LES method (and especially coupled and acoustic codes) for simulation of corresponding nonstationary process (and unsteady combustion regimes) is a promising strategy for industrial applications. In this work we present results of simulations carried out employing the joint RANS/LES approach for three examples: High velocity premixed combustion in a channel, combustion in the shear flow behind an obstacle and the impinging flame (a premixed flame attached to an obstacle).  相似文献

Unsteady three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are conducted with the open-source software OpenFOAM to assess the scale-adaptive k-ω-SST-SAS turbulence model (SAS) on a radial, volute-type centrifugal pump at part load operation which is characterized by high unsteadiness and flow separation. SAS results are compared to spatially high resolved and ensemble-averaged flow measurement data in terms of flow angle and turbulence intensity (TI) in the rotor–stator interaction region. Differences to simulation results obtained with the statistical state-of-the-art k-ω-SST turbulence model (SST) are highlighted. The flow angle is predicted with a reasonable agreement to measurement data by both, SST and SAS models. In the highly transient flow of strong rotor–stator interaction near the volute tongue, SST results show a significant overprediction of measured TI while the SAS model yields a considerably better agreement to measurement data even with a typical URANS grid resolution. A grid refinement does not further improve the agreement to measurement data. An in-depth analysis of the SAS model on separated flow, i.e., periodic hill test case, together with a large eddy simulation (LES) reference solution is performed and reveals that with successive grid refinement, in contrast to LES, the SAS model in its present form of Egorov and Menter (2008) does not resolve a successively larger portion of the turbulence spectrum, and the modeled part is not successively reduced. For that purpose, a re-calibration or even a re-formulation of the scale-adaption source term in the transport equation of the turbulent dissipation rate may be indispensable, which will be the subject of future studies.  相似文献

The highly turbulent flow occurring inside gas-turbine combustors requires accurate simulation of scalar mixing if CFD methods are to be used with confidence in design. This has motivated the present paper, which describes the implementation of a passive scalar transport equation into an LES code, including assessment/testing of alternative discretisation schemes to avoid over/undershoots and excessive smoothing. Both second order accurate TVD and higher order accurate DRP schemes are assessed. The best performance is displayed by a DRP method, but this is only true on fine meshes; it produces similar (or larger) errors to a TVD scheme on coarser meshes, and the TVD approach has been retained for LES applications. The unsteady scalar mixing performance of the LES code is validated against published DNS data for a slightly heated channel flow. Excellent agreement between the current LES predictions and DNS data is obtained, for both velocity and scalar statistics. Finally, the developed methodology is applied to scalar transport in a confined co-axial jet mixing flow, for which experimental data are available. Agreement with statistically averaged fields for both velocity and scalar, is demonstrated to be very good, and a considerable improvement over the standard eddy viscosity RANS approach. Illustrations are presented of predicted time-resolved information e.g. time histories, and scalar pdf predictions. The LES results are shown, even using a simple Smagorinsky SGS model, to predict (correctly) lower values of the turbulent Prandtl number in the free shear regions of the flow, compared to higher values in the wall-affected regions. The ability to predict turbulent Prandtl number variations (rather than input these as in combustor RANS CFD models) is an important and promising feature of the LES approach for combustor flow simulation since it is known to be important in determining combustor exit temperature traverse.  相似文献

We first recall the EDQNM two-point closure approach of three-dimensional isotropic turbulence. It allows in particular prediction of the infrared kinetic-energy dynamics (with ak 4 backscatter) and the associated time-decay law of kinetic-energy, useful in particular for one-point closure modelling. Afterwards, we show how the spectral eddy viscosity concept may be used for large-eddy simulations: we introduce the plateau-peak model and the spectral-dynamic models. They are applied to decaying isotropic turbulence, and allow recovery of the EDQNM infrared energy dynamics. Anew infrared k 2 law for the pressure spectrum, predicted by the closure, is also well verified. Assuming that subgrid scales are not too far from isotropy, the spectral-dynamic model is applied to the channel flow at h += 390, with statistics in very good agreement with DNS, while reducing considerably the computational time. We study with the aid of DNS and LES the case of the channel rotating about an axis of spanwise direction. The calculations allow to recover the universal linear behaviour of the mean velocity profile, with a local Rossby number equal to −1. We present also LES (using the Grenoble Filtered Structure-Function Model), of a turbulent boundary layer passing over a cavity. In this paper, we discuss the application of spectral-based methods to simulation of particle-laden turbulent flows. The primary focus of the article is on the past and ongoing works by the authors. The particles are tracked in Lagrangian framework, while direct numerical simulation (DNS) or large-eddy simulation (LES) is used to describe the carrier-phase flow field. Two different spectral methods are considered, namely Fourier pseudo-spectral method and Chebyshev multidomain spectral method. The pseudo-spectral method is used for the simulation of homogeneous turbulence. DNS of both incompressible and compressible flows with one- and two-way couplings are reported. For LES of particle-laden flows, two new models, developed by the authors, account for the effect of sub-grid fluctuations on the dispersed phase. The Chebyshev multidomain method is employed for the works on inhomogeneous flows. A number of canonical flows are discussed, including flow past a square cylinder, channel flow and flow over backward-facing step. Ongoing research on particle-laden LES of inhomogeneous flows is briefly reported.  相似文献

A new subgrid-scale (SGS) model based on partially integrated transport method (PITM) is applied to the case of a turbulent spectral non-equilibrium flow created by the mixing of two turbulence fields of differing scales: the shearless mixing layer. The method can be viewed as a continuous hybrid RANS/LES approach. In this model the SGS length scale is no longer given by the size of the discretization step, but is dynamically estimated using an additional transport equation for the dissipation rate. The results are compared to those corresponding to the classical model of Smagorinsky and to the experimental data of Veeravalli and Warhaft. A method for creating an anisotropic analytical pseudo-random field for inflow conditions is also proposed. This approach based on subgrid-scale transport modelling combined with anisotropic inlet conditions gives better results for the prediction of the shearless mixing layer.  相似文献
