Temperature calibration of DSCs is usually carried out on heating. In order to accurately control the temperature during cooling experiments, the calibration has to be carried out on cooling. Therefore, three high-purity, thermally stable liquid crystals were used to perform a temperature calibration of an electrcial compensation DSC on cooling. All three liquid crystals have several liquid crystalline phases, and they all were purified to a 99.9% lovel. Temoperatures of the isotropic to nematic or cholesteric and the mesophase to mesophase transitions were used. It was verified that these liquid crystals have sufficient thermal stability for carrying out the calibration on cooling. The dependence of the real temperature on the indicated temperature has been established for all the combinations of the heating and cooling rates of practical interest. It is also shown that the vant's Hoff equation can only be applied to the crystal to a liquid crystal transition, but not to the liquid crystal to liquid crystal or liquid crystal to isotropic transitions.  相似文献

Factors for the electrical orientation on interdigitated microelectrodes deposited on a substrate, a microdielectrometric sensor (or a sensor), were discussed experimentally using a model nematic liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy. The electrical orientation behaviour of the nematic liquid crystal was investigated using microdielectrometry and polarised optical microscopy. The experimental results were discussed in relation to electric-field line, surface topology, anchoring of the liquid crystalline molecules to the microelectrodes, and transversal rotation of a rode-like molecule of the liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy.  相似文献

We present a tunable device with wavelength switching/filtering features using periodic metallic nano-slits integrated with a nematic liquid crystal layer. Electrical tunability is a result of the presence of nematic liquid crystal in the cavity of a device. Resonant wavelength can be fine-tuned in 94-nm intervals by controlling the bias voltage. The present study shows that the performance of the device is dependent strongly on the geometry of nano-slits. Through the optimization of parameters, 23 dB ON–OFF ratio is achieved, which is better compared to other solutions. These characteristics can be used in switching/filtering applications at near-infrared optical communication systems. In addition, the dependence of reflectance spectrum on incident angle suggests that an application is a tunable optical filter for this device.  相似文献

We have explored the change in alignment of a nematic liquid crystal, 4'-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) with three types of photosensitive polyimide as the alignment layer by photoirradiation at 366 nm. The photosensitive polyimide alignment layer induced a reversible change in alignment of 5CB. It was observed that the 5CB molecules became aligned from homogeneous alignment to homeotropic on photoirradiation with a d.c. electric field as a bias, and reversed to the homogeneous state when photoirradiation was ceased. This result indicates that optical switching could be repeated by on and off switching of the excitation light at 366 nm. The optical switching of the nematic liquid crystal might be mainly due to a photophysical change in the polyimide surface which is affected by the chemical structures of the polyimides at the temperature at which 5CB exhibits a nematic phase. The optical switching of nematic liquid crystals with photosensitive polyimides as the alignment layer is a novel driving method for nematic liquid crystals.  相似文献

We report on a novel type of orientational photorefractive devices consisting of dye-doped or pure nematic liquid crystals. These systems can be employed as the recording media for real-time (dynamic) holography. Optical addressing of liquid crystal molecules is facilitated due to the natural tendency of molecular self-assembling in nematics and their easy reorientation upon action of an electric field. This field can be produced by incoming light via photoconductivity either in the bulk or at the surface of the nematic liquid crystal layer. We present an experimental study of dynamic self-diffraction of light on thin phase holograms formed in a nematic liquid crystal panel. Optically addressed spatial light modulators designed by us can be the active elements of image processing systems and in this communication we demonstrate the optical correlator performing image recognition.  相似文献

The genetic algorithm (GA), written to allow automatic analysis of optical reflectivity data obtained from liquid crystal cells using the half-leaky guided mode technique, has been developed to the point where liquid crystal cells can be analysed successfully giving greater detail of optical parameters and director profile than yielded by any other technique. The technique models the liquid crystal layer as a set of discrete, independent sub-layers which can map out the variation of the director through the thickness of the cell. Given sufficient high quality data, it is now possible automatically and accurately to fit the parameters of a complete liquid crystal cell. Using this highly adapted GA, half-leaky guided mode optical reflectivity data from the nematic, smectic A and smectic C* phases of SCE13 in a surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal have been fitted to reveal director profiles and optical parameters of the cell in each phase.  相似文献

Photon correlation spectroscopy of light scattered by director fluctuations from an evanescent optical wave propagating in the nematic liquid crystal 5CB is used to study the interfacial dynamic behaviour of the liquid crystal. The intensity correlation function of light scattered by interfacial orientation fluctuations is measured by illuminating to give a short optical penetration depth within the nematic. These surface scattering correlation functions strongly differ from the bulk correlation function and are interpreted in terms of a nematic surface orientation mode arising from the coupling between the director field and the fluid velocity. It is shown that the analysis of the surface mode gives a method for measuring anchoring energies in liquid crystals. The anchoring energy obtained for rotation of the director away from the rubbing direction about an axis normal to the surface for 5CB at a rubbed nylon surface is 7.14±0.7 × 10-2 ergcm-2.  相似文献

Switchable nematic emulsions are micron-sized droplets of nematic liquid crystal, floating in isotropic fluid matrices. Such droplets can be switched from an opaque (off) to a transparent (on) state by application of very low electric fields. It is known that the electro-optical properties of liquid crystal dispersions are affected by several parameters, including the liquid crystal loading. The electro-optical response of nematic emulsions has been investigated as a function of liquid crystal weight percentage. Almost transparent films with a reduced contrast ratio are obtained with lower liquid crystal contents. A macroscopic phase separation is observed when liquid crystal content exceeds 45 wt %. On the contrary, large contrast ratios and very low switching fields can be obtained if liquid crystal ranges from 25 to 35 wt %. Consequently, nematic emulsions prepared in this liquid crystal range can be used as promising systems for electro-optical applications. In addition to technological developments, these results can help computational and basic studies of phase separation in novel multiphase liquid crystalline materials.  相似文献

In this work we present a new technique for obtaining large diffraction gratings (some cm) by means of a simple filling of cells having a planar treatment of their inner surfaces. A homogeneous mixture, composed of a cholesteric liquid crystal and a nematic liquid crystal monomer, was used. During the filling process, the flow induces a phase separation between the cholesteric liquid crystal and the liquid crystal monomer and, at the same time, the latter is oriented planar to the surfaces of the cell. Phase separation produces alternate arrays constituted by the cholesteric liquid crystal and the nematic liquid crystal monomer. Successive UV polymerization of these films yields a permanent grating. We have investigated the transmitted and first order diffracted beam efficiency for films obtained at different temperatures. The morphology of the films was studied by using an optical microscope equipped with crossed polarizers and by electron microscopy in order to control the shape of the arrays and the alignment of the oriented polymer.  相似文献

Modulation of the intensity of light by high quality reflective micro-displays is predominantly carried out by liquid crystal over silicon (LCoS) spatial light modulator (SLM) technology for applications such as pico-projectors. Wider use of these devices, in applications such as computer-generated holography and optical correlation, is limited by their phase modulation ability and illumination polarisation state dependence. These devices rely on planar or twisted nematic liquid crystals to modulate the light, but due to their viscoelastic properties they are inherently slow. Research into the use of the polymer stabilised blue phase has already shown that it can offer high speed phase modulation. However, other chiral nematic orientations are yet to be compared in LCoS devices. In this article, we demonstrate that polymer-stabilised chiral nematic liquid crystal electro-optical effects can offer phase modulation in silicon backplane devices. The uniform standing helix and focal conic textures are shown to be independent of the input light polarisation state and the uniform lying helix is shown to be polarisation dependent. These optical responses are then compared with that of the blue phase to identify a suitable orientation for further development in LCoS technology in order to find a high-speed, full phase modulating material.  相似文献

Amorphous twisted nematic liquid crystal display cells have been prepared without rubbing. The textures consisted of twisted nematic multi-domains. Theoretical calculations of the optical properties of such cells have been carried out by the 4 × 4 matrix method. The optical anisotropy of the liquid crystal is optimized to suppress/optimize the background colour. The electro-optical characteristics of the a-TN have been measured. It is shown that the a-TN devices exhibit wide and uniform viewing angle characteristics and possess good gray scale capability. Viewing angles of - 47° to + 45° (up-down) and - 51° to + 46° (left-right) have been achieved. A rise time of 36.5 ms and decay time of 35.5 ms have been measured in an a-TN sample.  相似文献

Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) is a light scattering material that operates on the principle of electrically modulating the refractive index of the liquid crystal in an optical isotropic, transparent solid. The principle of operation of the PDLC device, the interface requirements between PDLC material and its driving circuit are studied. For high definition television (HDTV) application, a detailed comparison of PDLC vs. twisted nematic/super twisted nematic (TN/STN) display devices will be discussed. It was found that single crystal metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) is better than conventionally used thin film transistor (TFT) in driving these PDLC light valves.  相似文献

Dielectric, optical and electro-optical properties of four chlorinated nematic liquid crystal compounds and a eutectic mixture were characterized. Some chlorinated liquid crystals are found to exhibit a wide nematic range, modest dielectric and optical anisotropies, low viscosity and small UV absorption. Potential application of mixtures containing chlorinated liquid crystals for information displays in the visible spectral region is foreseeable.  相似文献

Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films operating in reverse mode are transparent electro-optical devices, which can be turned into an opaque state by application of a suitable electric field. The effect was investigated of different UV powers, used during the polymerization process, on the electro-optical and morphology properties of PDLCs, working in reverse mode operation. Films were obtained by UV polymerization of mixtures of a low molecular weight nematic liquid crystal and a photopolymerizable liquid crystal monomer, homeotropically aligned by rough conductive surfaces. The electro-optical and morphology properties of samples were related to the polymerization conditions. Samples polymerized by lower UV powers exhibited “polymer ball” morphology and an electro-optical response due to the liquid crystal director reorientation, whereas samples obtained at higher UV powers showed a “Swiss cheese” morphology and an electro-optical response due to dynamic scattering. In addition, we observed by conductivity and IR measurements that UV exposure induces a degradation of the nematic liquid crystal.  相似文献

Recently we observed an unusual temperature dependence of the pretilt angle of a nematic liquid crystal generated at the rubbed surface of a side group liquid crystalline polymer film. To understand the mechanism, a detailed investigation of the temperature effect on the rubbing-induced optical phase retardation of a side group liquid crystalline polymer film has been carried out. On heating the film above the glass transition temperature of the polymer, a clear change is seen in the temperature dependence of the optical phase retardation. We infer from this investigation that the thermal variation of the rubbing-induced optical phase retardation results in a change in the temperature variation of the pretilt angle.  相似文献

A method is reported for local alignment of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) molecules. It consists in the poling of small areas of ferroelectric thin films using scanning probe microscopy. A liquid crystal deposited onto such a surface is aligned via a dipole-dipole interaction. The ferroelectric films are first characterized using X ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy and ellipsometry. The domain manipulation and local poling of the film are achieved and characterized using an electrostatic microscopy type set-up. A hybrid nematic liquid crystal cell (NLC-OFC: nematic liquid crystal - oxide ferroelectric cell) is then constructed and its alignment inspected using polarizing microscopy (in reflection mode). The reorientation is explained by invoking a simple interaction between the dipole moment of the LC and the surface electric field generated by the poled area. In addition, a complimentary experiment is performed to determine the depth to which the poled area affects the liquid crystal alignment. This consists of measuring the deflection of a collimated beam (optical soliton) propagating across the poled area.  相似文献

By using polarizing microscopy analysis we have found that several achiral homologues of the 4-n-alkyloxybenzoic acids, displaying only the nematic phase, exhibit the optical properties of a chiral liquid crystal system. These acids possess a mesophase due to the formation of dimers via hydrogen bonding. The microtextural analysis was carried out in the temperature ranges of the isotropic, nematic and crystal phases. The nucleation of a chiral texture in small domains emerging on cooling in the isotropic phase was observed. These small domains are characterized by a conoscopic cross which presents an azimuth of 45° with respect to the polarizer axis, contrary to the usual nematic drops, for which the conoscopic cross is not rotated. On further cooling, these domains coalesce in the nematic phase close to the clearing point, thus building large chiral monodomains. Such coalesced droplets exhibit very thin stripe lines, as in the case of pure cholesterics with a tilted helix axis. Moreover, left- and right-handed chiral domains were observed, combined in regions partially separated by 'oily streaks', also typical of pure cholesterics. On cooling, the chiral nematic (N*) phase transformed through a pronounced texture transition into a normal nematic phase. However, the small chiral grains that formed from the isotropic phase are retained close to the surface, acting as 'memorizing centres'. With suitable boundary conditions, they can provide a macroscopic twist driven by the surface. Moreover, a twisted smectic B not present in the bulk phase diagram was found and interpreted as induced by the surface. Also in the crystal phase a strong memorization of the chiral N* texture was observed.  相似文献
