Define by if is odd and if is even. The Conjecture states that the -orbit of every positive integer contains . A set of positive integers is said to be sufficient if the -orbit of every positive integer intersects the -orbit of an element of that set. Thus to prove the Conjecture it suffices to prove it on some sufficient set. Andaloro proved that the sets are sufficient for and asked if is also sufficient for larger values of . We answer this question in the affirmative by proving the stronger result that is sufficient for any nonnegative integers and with i.e. every nonconstant arithmetic sequence forms a sufficient set. We then prove analagous results for the Divergent Orbits Conjecture and Nontrivial Cycles Conjecture.

Let be a -algebra acting on a Hilbert space , let be a linear mapping and let be a -derivation. Generalizing the celebrated theorem of Sakai, we prove that if is a continuous -mapping, then is automatically continuous. In addition, we show the converse is true in the sense that if is a continuous --derivation, then there exists a continuous linear mapping such that is a --derivation. The continuity of the so-called - -derivations is also discussed.

Two elements and in a ring determine a generalized derivation on by setting for any in . We characterize when the product is a generalized derivation in the cases when the ring is the algebra of all bounded operators on a Banach space , and when is a -algebra . We use these characterizations to compute the commutant of the range of .

It is an observation due to J. J. Kohn that for a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain in there exists such that the -Neumann operator on maps (the space of -forms with coefficient functions in -Sobolev space of order ) into itself continuously. We show that this conclusion does not hold without the smoothness assumption by constructing a bounded pseudoconvex domain in , smooth except at one point, whose -Neumann operator is not bounded on for any .

We construct several topological groups with very strong combinatorial properties. In particular, we give simple examples of subgroups of (thus strictly -bounded) which have the Menger and Hurewicz properties but are not -compact, and show that the product of two -bounded subgroups of may fail to be -bounded, even when they satisfy the stronger property . This solves a problem of Tkacenko and Hernandez, and extends independent solutions of Krawczyk and Michalewski and of Banakh, Nickolas, and Sanchis. We also construct separable metrizable groups of size continuum such that every countable Borel -cover of contains a -cover of .

We give an example of a subgroup of which is a strictly ascending HNN extension of a non-abelian finitely generated free group . In particular, we exhibit a free group in of rank which is conjugate to a proper subgroup of itself. This answers positively a question of Drutu and Sapir (2005). The main ingredient in our construction is a specific finite volume (non-compact) hyperbolic 3-manifold which is a surface bundle over the circle. In particular, most of comes from the fundamental group of a surface fiber. A key feature of is that there is an element of in with an eigenvalue which is the square root of a rational integer. We also use the Bass-Serre tree of a field with a discrete valuation to show that the group we construct is actually free.

The aim of this paper is to study the set of all -summand vectors of a real Banach space . We provide a characterization of -summand vectors in smooth real Banach spaces and a general decomposition theorem which shows that every real Banach space can be decomposed as an -sum of a Hilbert space and a Banach space without nontrivial -summand vectors. As a consequence, we generalize some results and we obtain intrinsic characterizations of real Hilbert spaces.

We prove that if ZFC is consistent so is ZFC + ``for any sequence of subsets of a Polish space there exists a separable metrizable topology on with , and Borel in for all .' This is a category analogue of a theorem of Carlson on the possibility of extending Lebesgue measure to any countable collection of sets. A uniform argument is presented, which gives a new proof of the latter as well.

Some consequences of these extension properties are also studied.

Given any separable Hilbert space , we construct a faithful, normal state on and an increasing sequence of positive operators acting on such that is bounded, but fails to converge both bundlewise and in -norm. We also present an example of an increasing sequence of positive operators which has a subsequence converging both bundlewise and in -norm, but the whole sequence fails to converge in either sense. Finally, we observe that our results are linked to a previous one by R. V. Kadison.
