The structure of aldehyde-terminated alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) is investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For the first time, the structures of aldehyde-terminated SAMs are revealed with molecular resolution. SAMs of 11-mercapto-1-undecanal exhibit the basic (radical3xradical3)R30 degrees periodicity and form various c(4x2) superstructures upon annealing. In conjunction with DFT studies, the models of the (radical3xradical3)R30 degrees and the c(4x2) superstructures are constructed. In comparison with alkanethiol SAMs, the introduction of aldehyde-termini results in smaller domain size, lower degree of long-range order, large coverage of disordered areas, and higher density of missing molecules and other point defects within domains of closely packed molecules. The origin of these structural differences is mainly attributed to the strong dipole-dipole interactions among the aldehyde termini.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were formed by the spontaneous adsorption of octythiocyanate (OTC) on Au(111) using both solution and ambient-pressure vapor deposition methods at room temperature and 50 degrees C. The surface structures and adsorption characteristics of the OTC SAMs on Au(111) were characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The STM observation showed that OTC SAMs formed in solution at room temperature have unique surface structures including the formation of ordered and disordered domains, vacancy islands, and structural defects. Moreover, we revealed for the first time that the adsorption of OTC on Au(111) in solution at 50 degrees C led to the formation of SAMs containing small ordered domains, whereas the SAMs formed by vapor deposition at 50 degrees C had long-range ordered domains, which can be described as (radical3 x 2 radical19)R5 degrees structures. XPS measurements of the peaks in the S 2p and N 1s regions for the OTC SAMs showed that vapor deposition is the more effective method as compared to solution deposition for obtaining high-quality SAMs by adsorption of OTC on gold. The results obtained will be very useful in understanding the SAM formation of organic thiocyanates on gold surfaces.  相似文献

We report a computational investigation of the conformation and the dynamics of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of a set of aromatic thiols arranged in the ( radical3 x radical3)-R30 degrees packing ratio on a Au(111) surface using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. It was found that the molecular conformations were better defined for the arylthiol with two phenyl groups as compared to those with a single phenyl group and that the chemical structure of the head and tail groups had a considerable influence on the system geometry. In line with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations of small thiol molecules, we found for the SAMs that the face-centered cubic (fcc) site on the Au(111) surface was the most preferred, followed by the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) site, while the bridge position showed the characteristics of a local energy maximum. The dynamics of thiol head groups on these three Au sites was found to govern the overall dynamics of SAMs as measured by the mean square displacement. We also report that both the conformation and the dynamics on the studied time scale were driven by the SAM formation energy.  相似文献

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) were used to examine the structural transitions and interface dynamics of octanethiol (OT) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) caused by long-term storage or annealing at an elevated temperature. We found that the structural transitions of OT SAMs from the c(4 x 2) superlattice to the (6 x square root 3) superlattice resulting from long-term storage were caused by both the dynamic movement of the adsorbed sulfur atoms on several adsorption sites of the Au(111) surface and the change of molecular orientation in the ordered layer. Moreover, it was found that the chemical structure of the sulfur headgroups does not change from monomer to dimer by the temporal change of SAMs at room temperature. Contrary to the results of the long-term-stored SAMs, it was found that the annealing process did not modify either the interfacial or chemical structures of the sulfur headgroups or the two-dimensional c(4 x 2) domain structure. Our results will be very useful for a better understanding of the interface dynamics and stability of sulfur atoms in alkanethiol SAMs on Au(111) surfaces.  相似文献

The tert-butanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) surfaces were prepared from various solvents and investigated by a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and electrochemistry in aqueous environments. High-resolution STM images reveal a (radical(7) x radical(7))R19 degrees surface lattice structure, in contrast with the conventional lattice (radical(3) x radical(3))R30 degrees structure for straight-chain alkanethiol SAMs. Interestingly, such a branched monolayer shows electrochemical rectification toward redox probes. We suggest that electrochemical rectification could be a general characteristic of short-chain branched alkanthiol SAMs, and originate in localized electronic effects.  相似文献

Molecular ordering of pyrrolyl-terminated alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (PyC(n)SH SAMs) on Au(111) substrates (n = 11 or 12) was investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and various spectroscopic methods. The SAMs, which were in a disordered state when formed at room temperature, could be ordered either globally by thermal annealing at 70 degrees C, or locally via stimulation with repetitive STM scans. The ordered phase was characterized by small domains of molecular rows formed along 112[combining macron] directional set with an inter-row corrugation period close to 1.44 nm, in which defects were abundant. Based on the experimental results, the molecular arrangement in the ordered PyC(n)SH SAM was proposed to be a (5x radical3)rect structure with a molecular deficiency >or=10%. While mechanical interactions between molecules and scanning probe tips had been pointed out as the major cause of scan-induced phase transformations in other SAM systems, electronic or electrostatic factors were thought to affect considerably the scan-induced ordering process in this SAM system. From comparison of surface molecular coverage between disordered and thermally ordered SAMs of PyC(12)SH, it was inferred that the disorder could be ascribed to both kinetic and thermodynamic factors. The kinetic barrier to the ordered phase was supposed to result from strong dipole-dipole interactions among the pyrrolyl endgroups.  相似文献

Nonionic Fluorosurfactant Zonyl FSN self-assembly on Au(111) is investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy under ambient conditions. STM reveals that the FSN forms SAMs on Au(l11) with very large domain size and almost no defects. A (mean square root of 3 x mean square root of 3)R3 degree arrangement of the FSN SAM on Au(111) is observed. The SAMs show excellent chemical stability and last for at least a month in atmospheric conditions. The structure and stability of the FSN SAMs are compared with those of alkanethiols SAMs. It is expected that FSN may serve as a new kind of molecule to form SAMs for surface modification, which would benefit wider applications for various purposes.  相似文献

Redox-responsive poly(ferrocenylsilane) (PFS) polymer molecules were attached individually to gold surfaces for force spectroscopy experiments on the single molecule level. By grafting ethylenesulfide-functionalized PFS into the defects of preformed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of different omega-mercaptoalkanols on Au(111), the surface coverage of PFS macromolecules could be conveniently controlled. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), contact angle, as well as cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry measurements were carried out to characterize the morphology, wettability, and surface coverage of the grafted layers. The values of the PFS surface coverage were found to depend on the chain length of the omega-mercaptoalkanol molecules and on the concentration of the PFS solution but not on the insertion time or on the molar mass of PFS. The equilibrium surface coverages were successfully described by Langmuir adsorption isotherms. For low-surface coverage values (< 6.2 x 10(-4) chain/nm2), achieved by PFS insertion from very dilute solutions (8 x 10(-6) M) into long-chain SAMs, AFM and differential pulse voltammetry showed that surfaces exposing isolated individual polymer chains were obtained. The isolated PFS macromolecules were subjected to in situ AFM-based single molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) measurements. The single chain elasticity of PFS in isopropanol (and ethanol) was fitted with the modified freely jointed chain (m-FJC) model. This procedure yielded a Kuhn segment length of 0.33 +/- 0.05 nm and a segment elasticity of 32 +/- 5 nN/nm.  相似文献

Two new polychlorotriphenylmethyl (PTM) derivatives bearing a thioacetate and a disulfide group have been synthesized to anchor on gold substrate. On the basis of these molecules, three strategies were followed to prepare self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of electroactive PTMs. The resulting SAMs were fully characterized by contact angle, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS). The high coverage surface and stability of the SAMs were demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry. In addition, the electrochemical experiments proved that these SAMs are bistable since it is possible to reversibly switch between the PTM radical state to the corresponding anion. The magnetic response was investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance. We observed that when the PTM SAMs are in their radical form they confer magnetic functionality to the surface, whereas when they are in the anionic state, the surface is diamagnetic. Thus, the PTM-modified substrates are multifunctional surfaces since they combine magnetic and electroactive properties. The reported results show the high potential of these materials for the fabrication of surface molecular devices.  相似文献

Self assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed from TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl) derivative thiols have been studied by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) in both aqueous and non-aqueous solvents. The in situ study of the mass transport occurring during the oxidation of TEMPO provides evidence of a ion pair formation without incorporation of solvent in densely packed nitroxyl radical SAMs. For SAMs having a low nitroxyl radical surface coverage, the effect of mixed SAMs is evidenced and seems to avoid the solvent incorporation.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations are used to probe the structure and stability of alkanethiolate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold nanoparticles. We observed that the surface of gold nanoparticles becomes highly corrugated by the adsorption of the SAMs. Furthermore, as the temperature is increased, the SAMs dissolve into the gold nanoparticle, creating a liquid mixture at temperatures much lower than the melting temperature of the gold nanoparticle. By analyzing the mechanical and chemical properties of gold nanoparticles at temperatures below the melting point of gold, with different SAM chain lengths and surface coverage properties, we determined that the system is metastable. The model and computational results that provide support for this hypothesis are presented.  相似文献

Scanning tunneling microscopy was used to characterize self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of octanethiol on Au(111), created using vapor deposition at elevated temperatures and ambient pressure. Monolayers contained large, close-packed ( radical3 x radical3)R30 degrees domains with sizes considerably larger than those typically formed from conventional solution-phase preparation and with crystallographically straight domain boundaries. New striped surface phases were also observed, including a 13 x radical3 phase with a density that was 69% of the close-packed density; these striped phases appeared topographically higher in STM images than close-packed monolayers.  相似文献

Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy has been used to characterize the various structures of submonolayer and near-monolayer coverages of benzene (C6H6) on Au[111] at 4 K. At low coverage, benzene is found to adsorb preferentially at the top of the Au monatomic steps and is weakly adsorbed on the terraces. At near-monolayer coverage, benzene was found to form several long-range commensurate overlayer structures that depend on the regions of the reconstructed Au[111] surface, namely a (radical 52 x radical 52)R13.9 degrees structure over the hcp regions and a (radical 133 x radical 133)R17.5 degrees "pinwheel" structure over the fcc regions. Time-lapse imaging revealed concerted cascade motion of the benzene molecules in the (radical 133 x radical 133)R17.5 degrees pinwheel overlayer. We demonstrate that the observed cascade motion is a result of concerted molecular motion and not independent random motion.  相似文献

A detailed study on the time-dependent organization of a decanethiol self-assembled monolayer (SAM) at a designed solution concentration onto a Au(111) surface has been performed with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The SAMs were prepared by immersing Au(111) into an ethanol solution containing 1 microM decanethiol with different immersion times. STM images revealed the formation process and adlayer structure of the SAMs. It was found that the molecules self-organized into adlayers from random separation to a well-defined structure. From 10 s, small domains with ordered molecular organization appeared, although random molecules could be observed on Au(111) at the very initial stage. At 30 s, the SAM consisted of uniform short stripes. Each stripe consisted of sets of decanethiol mainly containing eight molecules. With the immersion time increasing, the length of the stripes increased. At 5 min, the alkyl chains overlapped each other between the adjacent stripes, indicating the start of a stacked process. After immersing Au(111) in decanethiol solution for 3 days, a densely packed adlayer with a (radical 3 x radical 3)R30 degrees structure was observed. The formation process and structure of decanethiol SAMs are well related to sample preparation conditions. The wettability of the decanethiolate SAM-modified Au(111) surface was also investigated.  相似文献

In-situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) coupled with cyclic voltammetry was used to examine the adsorption of carbon monoxide (CO) molecules on an ordered Au(111) electrode in 0.1 M HClO4. Molecular resolution STM revealed the formation of several commensurate CO adlattices, but the (9 x radical 3) structure eventually prevailed with time. The CO adlayer was completely electrooxidized to CO2 at 0.9 V versus RHE in CO-free 0.1 M HClO(4), as indicated by a broad and irreversible anodic peak which appeared at this potential in a positive potential sweep from 0.05 to 1.6 V. A maximal coverage of 0.3 was estimated for CO admolecules from the amount of charge involved in this feature. Real-time in-situ STM imaging allowed direct visualization of the adsorption process of CO on Au(111) at 0.1 V, showing the lifting of (radical 3 x 22) reconstruction of Au(111) and the formation of ordered CO adlattices. The (9 x radical 3) structure observed in CO-saturated perchloric acid has a coverage of 0.28, which is approximately equal to that determined from coulometry. Switching the potential from 0.1 to -0.1 V restored the reconstructed Au(111) with no change in the (9 x radical 3)-CO adlattice. However, the reconstructed Au(111) featured a pairwise corrugation pattern with two nearest pairs separated by 74 +/- 1 A, corresponding to a 14% increase from the ideal value of 65.6 A known for the ( radical 3 x 22) reconstruction. Molecular resolution STM further revealed that protrusions resulting from CO admolecules in the (9 x radical 3) structure exhibited distinctly different corrugation heights, suggesting that the CO molecules resided at different sites on Au(111). This ordered structure predominated in the potential range between 0.1 and 0.7 V; however, it was converted into new structures of (7 x radical 7) and ( radical 43 x 2 radical 13) on the unreconstructed Au(111) when the potential was held at 0.8 V for ca. 60 min. The coverage of CO adlayer decreased accordingly from 0.28 to 0.13 before it was completely removed from the Au(111) surface at more positive potentials.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of octanethiol and benzeneethanethiol were deposited on clean Pt(111) surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV). Highly resolved images of these SAMs produced by an in situ scanning tunneling microscope (STM) showed that both systems organize into a super-structure mosaic of domains of locally ordered, closely packed molecules. Analysis of the STM images indicated a (square root 3 x square root 3)R30 degrees unit cell for the octanethiol SAMs and a 4(square root 3 x square root 3)R30 degrees periodicity based on 2 x 2 basic molecular packing for the benzeneethanethiol SAMs under the coverage conditions investigated. SAMs on Pt(111) exhibited differences in molecular packing and a lower density of disordered regions than SAMs on Au(111). Electron transport measurements were performed using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Benzeneethanethiol/Pt(111) junctions exhibited a higher conductance than octanethiol/Pt(111) junctions.  相似文献

Tripod-shaped trithiols 1-3, containing CH2SH groups at the three bridgehead positions of the adamantane framework and a halogen-containing group [Br (1), p-BrC6H4 (2), or p-IC6H4 (3)] at the fourth bridgehead, were synthesized, and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were prepared on atomically flat Au111 surfaces. The three-point chemisorption of these tripods was confirmed by polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, which showed the absence of a S-H stretching band. Scanning tunneling microscopy of the SAM of 1 exhibited a hexagonal arrangement of the adsorbed molecule with a lattice constant of 8.7 angstroms. A unidirectionally oriented, head-to-tail array of 1, which allows the close approach of neighboring molecules, is proposed as a reasonable model of the two-dimensional crystal, where the adsorbed sulfur atoms form a quasi-(radical3 x radical3)R30 degrees lattice. The charge of the electrochemical reductive desorption of the SAM of 1 was in good agreement with the expected surface coverage, while the SAMs of 2 and 3 showed somewhat less (ca. 70%) charge. The large negative reduction peak potentials, observed for the SAM of 1, are taken to indicate a tight anchoring of this tripod by three sulfur atoms.  相似文献

Simulations of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are performed to interpret experimental measurements of ultrafast approximately 1 GPa (volume compression deltaV approximately 0.1) planar shock compression dynamics probed by vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy (Lagutchev, A. S.; Patterson, J. E.; Huang, W.; Dlott, D. D. J. Phys. Chem. B 2005, 109, XXXX). The SAMs investigated are octadecanethiol (ODT) and pentadecanethiol (PDT) on Au(111) and Ag(111) substrates, and benzyl mercaptan (BMT) on Au(111). In the alkane SAMs, SFG is sensitive to the instantaneous orientation of the terminal methyl; in BMT it is sensitive to the phenyl orientation. Computed structures of alkane SAMs are in good agreement with experiment. In alkanes, the energies of gauche defects increase with increasing number and depth below the methyl plane, with the exception of ODT/Au where both single and double gauche defects at the two uppermost dihedrals have similar energies. Simulations of isothermal uniaxial compression of SAM lattices show that chain and methyl tilting is predominant in PDT/Au, ODT/Ag and PDT/Ag, whereas single and double gauche defect formation is predominant in ODT/Au. Time-resolved shock data showing transient SFG signal loss of ODT/Au and PDT/Au are fit by calculations of the terminal group orientations as a function of deltaV and their contributions to the SFG hyperpolarizability. The highly elastic response of PDT/Au results from shock-generated methyl and chain tilting. The viscoelastic response of ODT/Au results from shock generation of single and double gauche defects. Isothermal compression simulations help explain and fit the time dependence of shock spectra but generally underestimate the magnitude of SFG signal loss because they do not include effects of high-strain-rate dynamics and shock front and surface irregularities.  相似文献

The self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 1-adamantanethiolate and its derivatives on Au(111) surface were investigated. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicates that the most stable configuration for absorption is at the face centered cubic (fcc)-bridge site. Canonical ensemble molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were carried out to study the structures and energies of the SAMs. The ordered structures of the SAMs were analyzed by means of radial distribution function and the relative stability of the SAMs was compared. It was concluded by the comparison of various contributions to the SAM formation energy that the formation of the SAMs was determined by the intermolecular nonbonding interaction and the chemical bonding interaction of sulfur and gold.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 4,4'-terphenyl-substituted alkanethiols C6H5(C6H4)2(CH2)n-SH (TPn, n = 1-6) on Au (111) substrates were studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS). When the SAMs were prepared at room temperature (RT, 298 K), TPn films (except TP2) exhibit an odd-even effect regarding both molecular orientation and packing density. For all investigated films, STM data reveals the presence of a large degree of lateral order. In the case of odd-numbered TPns, the films revealed a (2 square root(3) x square root(3))R30 degree molecular arrangement. For the even-numbered TP4 and TP6 SAMs, a c(5 square root(3) x 3) rectangular unit cell was found. The packing density for the even-numbered TPn SAMs is 25% lower than that for the odd-numbered TPn SAMs. When the SAMs were prepared at 333 K, the even-numbered SAMs were found to form structures with a significantly lower packing density. In the case of TP2, instead of the (2 square root(3) x square root(3))R30 degree structure formed at room temperature, a c(5 square root(3) x 3) structure was observed. For TP6 SAMs, the room-temperature c(5 square root(3) x 3) structure was replaced by a (6 square root(3) x 2 square root(3))R30 degree structure.  相似文献
