Owing to the high beam power densities envisaged in advanced nuclear targets, liquid metal-operated free surface targets are conceived as one feasible option. There, the free surface is formed by an adequately shaped upstream located nozzle. Target boundary conditions necessitate a detailed knowledge on the turbulent flow in contraction nozzles in order to identify turbulence models accurately predicting experimental findings within the velocity range of interest for nuclear target and hence can then act as design optimisation tools. In this context, a combined experimental and numerical study is conducted on the basis of the turbulent flow in the contraction nozzle of the Super-FRS target. Two aspects determining the turbulent flow in the nozzle have been investigated. The first is a potential relaminarisation of the boundary layer caused by the acceleration within the contraction and the second is a development of the secondary flows due to the pressure gradient in the rectangular shaped ducts cross-section. Regarding the three different turbulence models investigated here only the V2F model exhibited the capability to predict the relaminarisation of the turbulent boundary layer both qualitatively and quantitatively. All turbulence models are able to predict the development of secondary flows induced by pressure gradients in transverse direction with an acceptable accuracy.  相似文献

This paper reports an experimental study on the effect of the fuel nozzle orifice geometry on the stability of turbulent non-premixed methane flame. Different internal geometries (orifice equivalent diameter, length to diameter ratio and contraction angle) of a circular and a rectangular nozzle with an aspect ratio of 2 were examined. The strength of the co-airflow was also varied to assess its impact on the jet flame stability. The experimental data revealed that the level of turbulence in the jet near-field is, in general, higher for the rectangular nozzle in comparison with the circular nozzle. This high level of turbulence was found to accelerate the liftoff transition of the attached flame. The results revealed also that there is a clear interplay between the flame liftoff height and the jet flow characteristics. That is, a rectangular jet, which spreads faster along the minor axis and generates higher near-field turbulence, results in a flame base sitting closer to the nozzle exit in comparison with that of its circular nozzle counterpart. Finally, the presence of a moderate co-airflow resulted in a higher flame liftoff velocity and height. It also led to the appearance of a hysteresis phenomenon in the low jet velocity range regardless of the exit orifice shape of the fuel nozzle.  相似文献

Development and characterization of a variable turbulence generation system   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Experimental turbulent combustion studies require systems that can simulate the turbulence intensities [u′/U 0 ~ 20–30% (Koutmos and McGuirk in Exp Fluids 7(5):344–354, 1989)] and operating conditions of real systems. Furthermore, it is important to have systems where turbulence intensity can be varied independently of mean flow velocity, as quantities such as turbulent flame speed and turbulent flame brush thickness exhibit complex and not yet fully understood dependencies upon both U 0 and u′. Finally, high pressure operation in a highly pre-heated environment requires systems that can be sealed, withstand high gas temperatures, and have remotely variable turbulence intensity that does not require system shut down and disassembly. This paper describes the development and characterization of a variable turbulence generation system for turbulent combustion studies. The system is capable of a wide range of turbulence intensities (10–30%) and turbulent Reynolds numbers (140–2,200) over a range of flow velocities. An important aspect of this system is the ability to vary the turbulence intensity remotely, without changing the mean flow velocity. This system is similar to the turbulence generators described by Videto and Santavicca (Combust Sci Technol 76(1):159–164, 1991) and Coppola and Gomez (Exp Therm Fluid Sci 33(7):1037–1048, 2009), where variable blockage ratio slots are located upstream of a contoured nozzle. Vortical structures from the slots impinge on the walls of the contoured nozzle to produce fine-scale turbulence. The flow field was characterized for two nozzle diameters using three-component Laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) and hotwire anemometry for mean flow velocities from 4 to 50 m/s. This paper describes the key design features of the system, as well as the variation of mean and RMS velocity, integral length scales, and spectra with nozzle diameter, flow velocity, and turbulence generator blockage ratio.  相似文献

A special spray model is applied to study the spray behavior with high injection pressure and micro-hole nozzle. To reveal the cavitation in diesel nozzle and its influence on spray and atomization, the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model is adopted to detect the cavitation, and then the special spray model coupling the cavitation is build. From research results, three important conclusions can be drawn. Firstly, the cavitation flow can raise the effective velocity at the nozzle exit and such effect become even more obvious with higher injection pressure, e.g.180 MPa. Secondly, the applied spray model is in good agreement with the spray characteristics and images obtained from the EFS8400 spray test platform. Thirdly, the cavitation with high injection pressure and micro-hole nozzle can increase the spray cone angle and reduce the spray penetration; the cavitation intensity has a great impact on the spray velocity field and vorticity intensity, especially at the initial spray field under the condition of high injection pressure.  相似文献

The objective of the present work is to predict compressible swirl flow in the nozzle of air‐jet spinning using the realizable k–ε turbulence model and discuss the effect of the nozzle pressure. The periodic change of flow patterns can be observed. The recirculation zone near the wall of the injectors upstream increases in size and moves gradually upstream, whereas the vortex breakdown in the injector downstream shifts slowly towards the nozzle outlet during the whole period. A low axial velocity in the core region moves gradually away from the centerline, and the magnitude of the center reverse flow and the area occupied by it increase with axial distance due to the vortex breakdown. From the tangential velocity profile, there is a very small free‐vortex zone. With increasing nozzle pressure, the velocity increases and the location of vortex breakdown is moved slightly downward. An improved constant volume cycle(CVC) model is developed to analyze the nozzle effects on the thrust and specific impulse of pulse detonation rocket engine(PDRE).Theoretically, this model shows that the thrust coefficient/specific impulse of PDRE is a function of the nozzle contraction/expansion ratio and the operating frequency. The relationship between the nozzle contraction ratio and the operation frequency is obtained by introducing the duty ratio, by which the key problem in the theoretical design can be solved. Therefore, the performance of PDRE can be accessed to guide the preliminary shape design of nozzle conveniently and quickly. The higher the operating frequency of PDRE is, the smaller the nozzle contraction ratio should be. Besides, the lower the ambient pressure is, the larger the expansion ratio of the nozzle should be. When the ambient pressure is 1.013 × 105 Pa, the optimal expansion ratio will be less than 2.26.When the ambient pressure is reduced to vacuum, the extremum of the optimal thrust coefficient is 2.236 9, and the extremum of the specific impulse is 321.01 s. The results of the improved model are verified by numerical simulation.  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of nozzle geometry on the mixing characteristics and turbulent transport phenomena in turbulent jets. The nozzle geometry examined were round, square, cross, eight-corner star, six-lobe daisy, equilateral triangle as well as ellipse and rectangle each with aspect ratio of 2. The jets were produced from sharp linear contoured nozzles which may be considered intermediate to the more widely studied smooth contraction and orifice nozzles. A high resolution particle image velocimetry was used to conduct detailed velocity measurements in the near and intermediate regions. It was observed that the lengths of the potential cores and the growth rates of turbulence intensities on the jet centerline are comparable with those of the orifice jets. The results indicate that the decay and spreading rates are lower than reported for orifice jets but higher than results for smooth contoured jets. The jets issuing from the elliptic and rectangular nozzles have the best mixing performance while the least effective mixing was observed in the star jet. The distributions of the Reynolds stresses and turbulent diffusion clearly showed that turbulent transport phenomena are quite sensitive to nozzle geometry. Due to the specific shape of triangular and daisy jets, the profiles of mean velocity and turbulent quantities are close to each other in their minor and major planes while in the elliptic and rectangular jets are considerably different. They also exhibit more isotropic behavior compared to the elliptic and rectangular jets. In spite of significant effects of nozzle geometry on mean velocity and turbulent quantities, the integral length scales are independent of changes in nozzle geometry.  相似文献

The flow, turbulence, and noise parameters of cold and hot jets flowing out of nozzles of different types at subsonic and supersonic velocities are calculated using the high-resolution RANS/ILES method. The effect of the Mach number and the temperature at the nozzle exit on the flow features, the turbulent fluctuations of the velocity, the static pressure, and the temperature, together with the overall noise level is analyzed for all the jets considered. The accuracy of the calculations is confirmed by means of comparing with the available experimental data concerning certain parameters.  相似文献

 Mean velocities and turbulence characteristics of a turbulent plane offset jet with a small offset ratio of 2.125 have been studied using laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). Static pressure measurements highlight the importance of side plates in enhancing two-dimensionality of the jet. The spatial distributions of turbulence intensities and Reynolds shear stress show a high turbulence recirculating flow region close to the nozzle plate between the jet and the offset plate. The LDA results have been used to examine the capability of three different turbulence models (i.e. k–ɛ, RNG and Reynolds stress) in predicting the velocity field of this jet. While all three models are able to predict qualitatively the recirculation, converging and reattachment regions observed experimentally, the standard k–ɛ turbulence model predicts a reattachment length that best agrees with the experimentally determined value. Measurements of the mean velocity and turbulence intensity are presented for a rectangular jet of water ejecting into a gaseous ambient. Data are reported for streamwise locations up to 30 nozzle widths from the discharge and spanwise locations covering the inner 80% of the jet width. The flow conditions at the nozzle discharge were controlled by using different nozzle designs (parallel-plate and converging) and flow manipulators (wire grid and screens). The results track the mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles with streamwise distance, highlighting changes in both the profile shapes and magnitudes for both measured quantities. Independent of nozzle configuration, the mean velocity profile was shown to be most nonuniform and the turbulence intensity most nonhomogeneous at the nozzle discharge. With increasing streamwise distance, the mean velocity profile underwent a gradual transition to a completely uniform condition, while the turbulence field decayed and became homogeneous. The rate of viscous dissipation was shown to depend strongly on the nozzle exit condition. Velocity and Strain-Rate Characteristics of Opposed Isothermal Flows   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Velocity measurements in the isothermal flows created by an opposed nozzle configuration are reported with emphasis on the axis, stagnation plane and the distributions of mean and instantaneous strain rates. The instrumentation comprised particle image velocimetry (PIV) with silicon oil droplets added to the flows upstream of both nozzles with the laser sheet passing through the axis between the nozzles. The results identify the regions of high strain rates and quantify the development of the mean and turbulent components of the flow from the nozzle exits as a function of bulk velocities from 3 to 8.2 m/s and nozzle separations from 0.4 to 1.0 diameters. Results show, for example, the rise in the values of axial and radial normal stress towards the stagnation plane with values increasing by up to 300% and 160% respectively. The maximum mean strain rate occurred just over one nozzle radius from the axis at the smallest separation and with values that increased from 450 to 950 s−1 with decreasing separation at a bulk velocity of 3.0 m/s. Probability density functions were near Gaussian and hence much larger instantaneous strain rates were observed. The PIV image size had the advantage that it allowed the entire flow field to be viewed in terms of velocity vectors and derived quantities include mean strain rates. Small asymmetry of the flow and the higher strain rates at finite distances from the nominal impingement plane were observed. The experimental results permitted the domain of applicability of different modelling approaches to be defined more accurately and calculations were performed with different turbulence models. The results showed that two-equation turbulence models did not represent turbulence intensities close to impingement and that Reynolds stress closures produce superior agreement. It was further shown that ad hoc modifications to the dissipation equation, such as those based on the ratio of the turbulent to mean strain time scale, can improve results at the expense of generality. It is also shown that mean flows are well reproduced by a Reynolds stress closure for all nozzle separations. Comments are included on the implications of the results for investigations of reacting flows and extinction.  相似文献

The sensitivity of the flow along the nozzle and in the test section of high enthalpy wind tunnels to the thermochemical response of the nozzle expansion process, as well as effects on the pressure and heat transfer distributions over the Electre blunt cone standard test model, are examined in the framework of properly characterizing the test section flow field in such facilities. Particularly sensitive to the thermochemical behaviour of the nozzle flow, in the facilities under consideration, are the static pressure, static temperature and Mach number, whereas stagnation point (pitot) pressure and heat transfer data or freestream velocity are inadequate for the characterization of the thermochemical state of the flow. The Electre and nozzle wall pressure data in the F4 arc jet wind tunnel suggest, in contrast to nonequilibrium computations, that the flow in the F4 nozzle is close to equilibrium. In the HEG and, to some extent, the T5 piston-driven shock tunnels, there are indications that significant heat losses occur in the reservoir. Lastly, simple semi-empirical formulations for stagnation point heating are shown to perform reasonably well in high enthalpy flow conditions.  相似文献

Two turbulent separated and reattaching flows produced by a sudden expansion in a pipe have been studied. The first was produced by a simple axisymmetric sudden enlargement from a nozzle of diameter 80 mm to a pipe of diameter 150 mm. The second was the flow at the same enlargement with the addition of a centerbody 90 mm downstream of the nozzle exit. Detailed measurements of velocity and skin friction (made primarily using pulsed wires) and of wall static pressure are presented. Without the centerbody the flow structure is similar to that observed in other sudden pipe expansions and over backward-facing steps. A turbulent free shear layer, bearing some similarity to that of a round jet, grows from separation and then reattaches to the pipe wall downstream. Reattachment is a comparatively gradual process, the shear layer approaching the wall at a glancing angle. The introduction of the centerbody causes the shear layer to curve towards the wall and reattach at a much steeper angle. Reattachment is much more rapid; gradients of skin friction and pressure along the wall are many times those without the centerbody. The high curvature of the shear layer strongly influences its turbulent structure, locally suppressing turbulence levels and reducing its growth rate.  相似文献

This paper reports about the first application of a laser Doppler velocity profile sensor for precise flow rate measurements of natural gas under high pressure. The profile sensor overcomes the limitations of conventional laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) namely the effect of spatial averaging and the effect of fringe spacing variation (virtual turbulence). It uses two superposed, fan-like interference fringe systems to determine the axial position of a tracer particle inside the LDA’s measurement volume. Consequently, a spatial resolution of about 1 μm can be achieved and the effect of virtual turbulence is nearly eliminated. These features predestine the profile sensor for flow rate measurements with high precision. Velocity profile measurements were performed at the German national standard for natural gas, one of the world′s leading test facilities for precision flow rate measurements. As a result, the velocity profile of the nozzle flow could be resolved more precisely than with a conventional LDA. Moreover, the measured turbulence intensity of the core flow was of 0.14% mean value and 0.07% minimum value, which is significantly lower than reference measurements with a conventional LDA. The paper describes the performed measurements, gives a discussion and shows possibilities for improvements. As the main result, the goal of 0.1% flow rate uncertainty seems possible by an application of the profile sensor.  相似文献

We investigate the turbulence modeling of second moment closure used both in RANS and PITM methodologies from a fundamental point of view and its capacity to predict the flow in a low turbulence wind tunnel of small axisymmetric contraction designed by Uberoi and Wallis. This flow presents a complex phenomenon in physics of fluid turbulence. The anisotropy ratio of the turbulent stresses τ 11/τ 22 initially close to 1.4 returns to unity through the contraction, but surprisingly, this ratio gradually increases to its pre-contraction value in the uniform section downstream the contraction. This point constitutes the interesting paradox of the Uberoi and Wallis experiment. We perform numerical simulations of the turbulent flow in this wind tunnel using both a Reynolds stress model developed in RANS modeling and a subfilter scale stress model derived from the partially integrated transport modeling method. With the aim of reproducing the experimental grid turbulence resulting from the effects of the square-mesh biplane grid on the uniform wind tunnel stream, we develop a new analytical spectral method of generation of pseudo-random velocity fields in a cubic box. These velocity fields are then introduced in the channel using a matching numerical technique. Both RANS and PITM simulations are performed on several meshes to study the effects of the contraction on the mean velocity and turbulence. As a result, it is found that the RANS computation using the Reynolds stress model fails to reproduce the increase of anisotropy in the centerline of the channel after passing the contraction. In the contrary, the PITM simulation predicts fairly well this turbulent flow according to the experimental data, and especially, the “return to anisotropy” in the straight section of the channel downstream the contraction. This work shows that the PITM method used in conjunction with an analytical synthetic turbulence generation as inflow is well suited for simulating this flow, while allowing a drastic reduction of the computational resources.  相似文献

Experimental results on the shock structure of dual co-axial jets are presented. The effects of the geometric parameters of the inner nozzle, jet static pressure ratio (ratio of the exit plane static pressures of the inner and outer nozzles) and the ratio of outer to inner nozzle throat area on the shock structure were studied. A superimposed outer and inner jet structure was observed in the schlieren photographs. The inner flow is compressed by the outer flow resulting in the formation of a Mach disc and an exit shock. A parameter incorporating the effect of Mach number of the inner nozzle and jet static pressure ratio was found to correlate the observations regarding the Mach disc location.  相似文献

Velocity profiles and wall shear stress values in the wall jet region of planar underexpanded impinging jets are parameterized based on nozzle parameters (stand-off height, jet hydraulic diameter, and nozzle pressure ratio). Computational fluid dynamics is used to calculate the velocity fields of impinging jets with height-to-diameter ratios in the range of 15–30 and nozzle pressure ratio in the range of 1.2–3.0. The wall jet has an incomplete self-similar profile with a typical triple-layer structure as in traditional wall jets. The effects of compressibility are found to be insignificant for wall jets with Ma < 0.8. Wall jet analysis yielded power-law relationships with source dependent coefficients describing maximum velocity, friction velocity, and wall distances for maximum and half-maximum velocities. Source dependency is determined using the conjugate gradient method. These power-law relationships can be used for mapping wall shear stress as a function of nozzle parameters.  相似文献

Turbulent opposed jet (TOJ) burners are an interesting test case for fundamental combustion research and a good benchmark for the available modelling approaches. However, these opposed jet flames strongly depend on the turbulence generation inside the nozzle, which is usually achieved through a perforated plate upstream of the nozzle exit. The present work investigates the flow from these perforated plates and the subsequent turbulence generation in great detail. We present results from highly-resolved large eddy simulations (LES) of the in-nozzle flow in turbulent opposed jets alongside state-of-the-art particle image velocimetry (PIV) at standard and high repetition rates taken inside a glass nozzle. The in-nozzle PIV data provides the LES inflow conditions with unprecedented detail, which are used to follow the initial jet development behaviour known from PIV, before jet coalescence, turbulence production and decay further downstream in the nozzles are successfully predicted. In regions where the PIV experiment suffers from inherent limitations like reflections and the velocity bias, the LES data is available to still obtain a detailed picture of the flow. The sensitivity of the simulations to various physical and numerical parameters is discussed in detail. Results from LES and PIV are compared qualitatively and quantitatively in terms of first and second moments of velocity, temporal autocorrelations, and energy density spectra. Significant deviations are found in the frequency (20%) and strength of vortex shedding from the inlet plane only, whereas the qualitative and quantitative agreement between simulation and experiment is otherwise excellent throughout, implying that a successful large eddy simulation of a turbulent opposed jet can be performed in a domain that includes the perforated plates.  相似文献

The behavior of a non-buoyant circular water jet discharged from a contraction nozzle was experimentally investigated. In this experiment, the Reynolds number of the jet, based on the mean velocity results obtained by particle image velocimetry (PIV), ranged from 177 to 5,142. From the experimental results, we found that the cross-sectional profile of the axial velocity for a laminar flow near the nozzle did not show a top-hat distribution, whereas the profiles with Reynolds number higher than 437 were almost top-hat. The length of the zone of flow establishment (ZFE) was found to decrease with increasing Reynolds number. The measured centerline velocity decayed more rapidly and, consequently, approached the theoretical equation earlier near the nozzle as the Reynolds number increased. The decay constant for the centerline velocity of the turbulent cases was relatively lower than that discovered in theory. It is assumed that this probably resulted from the use of the contraction nozzle. Verifying the similarity of the lateral velocity profiles demonstrated that the Gaussian curve was properly approximated only for the turbulent jets and not for the laminar or transitional flows. The jet half width seldom grew for the laminar or transitional flows, whereas it grew with increasing axial distance for the turbulent flows. The spreading rates for the turbulent flows gradually decreased with increasing Reynolds number. The normalized turbulence intensity along the jet centerline increased more rapidly with the axial distance as the Reynolds number increased, and tended to the constant values proposed by previous investigators. The Reynolds shear stress levels were also found to increase as the Reynolds number increased for the turbulent jets.  相似文献

In present research, two turbulent opposed impinging air jets issuing from triangular nozzles with fixed and variable exit velocity ratios and different nozzle-to-nozzle distances have been studied numerically and then compared with rectangular and circular nozzles. The finite volume method has been applied for solving mass and momentum equations. The turbulence model being used here is k-ε RNG. Distributions of pressure, turbulence, kinetic energy and its dissipation rate in various regions especially on the impingement regions have been obtained with high accuracy. Study of the nozzle geometries has shown the advantage of triangular nozzles over other geometries. First, the triangle’s base in nozzle geometry has an important role in our study case which, mixing two flows and regions with high turbulence intensity, directly depends on it. Second, our results show that circular and rectangular nozzles have less efficiency than triangular nozzles in mixing applications. Third and last, it was found that the radial jet being created by opposed jets has some similarities to free jets. In this investigation, air in standard atmospheric pressure has been applied as working fluid.  相似文献
