Interior-point methods have been shown to be very efficient for large-scale nonlinear programming. The combination with penalty methods increases their robustness due to the regularization of the constraints caused by the penalty term. In this paper a primal–dual penalty-interior-point algorithm is proposed, that is based on an augmented Lagrangian approach with an \(\ell 2\)-exact penalty function. Global convergence is maintained by a combination of a merit function and a filter approach. Unlike the majority of filter methods, no separate feasibility restoration phase is required. The algorithm has been implemented within the solver WORHP to study different penalty and line search options and to compare its numerical performance to two other state-of-the-art nonlinear programming algorithms, the interior-point method IPOPT and the sequential quadratic programming method of WORHP.  相似文献

Interior-point methods for semidefinite optimization problems have been studied frequently, due to their polynomial complexity and practical implications. In this paper we propose a primal-dual infeasible interior-point algorithm that uses full Nesterov-Todd (NT) steps with a different feasibility step. We present a null-space primal-dual interior-point algorithm for solving nonlinear optimization problems with general inequality and equality constraints. The algorithm approximately solves a sequence of equality constrained barrier subproblems by computing a range-space step and a null-space step in every iteration. The ℓ2 penalty function is taken as the merit function. Under very mild conditions on range-space steps and approximate Hessians, without assuming any regularity, it is proved that either every limit point of the iterate sequence is a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker point of the barrier subproblem and the penalty parameter remains bounded, or there exists a limit point that is either an infeasible stationary point of minimizing the 2 norm of violations of constraints of the original problem, or a Fritz-John point of the original problem. In addition, we analyze the local convergence properties of the algorithm, and prove that by suitably controlling the exactness of range-space steps and selecting the barrier parameter and Hessian approximation, the algorithm generates a superlinearly or quadratically convergent step. The conditions on guaranteeing that all slack variables are still positive for a full step are presented.  相似文献

In this paper, we first present a full-Newton step feasible interior-point algorithm for solving horizontal linear complementarity problems. We prove that the full-Newton step to the central path is quadratically convergent. Then, we generalize an infeasible interior-point method for linear optimization to horizontal linear complementarity problems based on new search directions. This algorithm starts from strictly feasible iterates on the central path of a perturbed problem that is produced by a suitable perturbation in the horizontal linear complementarity problem. We use the so-called feasibility steps that find strictly feasible iterates for the next perturbed problem. By using centering steps for the new perturbed problem, we obtain a strictly feasible iterate close enough to the central path of the new perturbed problem. The complexity of the algorithm coincides with the best known iteration bound for infeasible interior-point methods.  相似文献

Penalty methods are very efficient in finding an optimal solution to constrained optimization problems. In this paper, we present an objective penalty function with two penalty parameters for inequality constrained bilevel programming under the convexity assumption to the lower level problem. Under some conditions, an optimal solution to a bilevel programming defined by the objective penalty function is proved to be an optimal solution to the original bilevel programming. Moreover, based on the objective penalty function, an algorithm is developed to obtain an optimal solution to the original bilevel programming, with its convergence proved under some conditions.  相似文献

We present a potential reduction interior-point algorithm for monotone nonlinear complementarity problems. At each iteration, one has to compute an approximate solution of a nonlinear system such that a certain accuracy requirement is satisfied. For problems satisfying a scaled Lipschitz condition, this requirement is satisfied by the approximate solution obtained by applying one Newton step to that nonlinear system. We discuss the global and local convergence rates of the algorithm, convergence toward a maximal complementarity solution, a criterion for switching from the interior-point algorithm to a pure Newton method, and the complexity of the resulting hybrid algorithm.This research was supported in part by NSF Grant DDM-89-22636.The authors would like to thank Rongqin Sheng and three anonymous referees for their comments leading to a better presentation of the results.  相似文献

A new, infeasible QP-free algorithm for nonlinear constrained optimization problems is proposed. The algorithm is based on a continuously differentiable exact penalty function and on active-set strategy. After a finite number of iterations, the algorithm requires only the solution of two linear systems at each iteration. We prove that the algorithm is globally convergent toward the KKT points and that, if the second-order sufficiency condition and the strict complementarity condition hold, then the rate of convergence is superlinear or even quadratic. Moreover, we incorporate two automatic adjustment rules for the choice of the penalty parameter and make use of an approximated direction as derivative of the merit function so that only first-order derivatives of the objective and constraint functions are used.  相似文献

Mehrotra’s algorithm has been the most successful infeasible interior-point algorithm for linear programming since 1990. Most popular interior-point software packages for linear programming are based on Mehrotra’s algorithm. This paper describes a proposal and implementation of an alternative algorithm, an arc-search infeasible interior-point algorithm. We will demonstrate, by testing Netlib problems and comparing the test results obtained by the arc-search infeasible interior-point algorithm and Mehrotra’s algorithm, that the proposed arc-search infeasible interior-point algorithm is a more reliable and efficient algorithm than Mehrotra’s algorithm.  相似文献

We propose a new primal-dual infeasible interior-point method for symmetric optimization by using Euclidean Jordan algebras. Different kinds of interior-point methods can be obtained by using search directions based on kernel functions. Some search directions can be also determined by applying an algebraic equivalent transformation on the centering equation of the central path. Using this method we introduce a new search direction, which can not be derived from a usual kernel function. For this reason, we use the new notion of positive-asymptotic kernel function which induces the class of corresponding barriers. In general, the main iterations of the infeasible interior-point methods are composed of one feasibility and several centering steps. We prove that in our algorithm it is enough to take only one centering step in a main iteration in order to obtain a well-defined algorithm. Moreover, we conclude that the algorithm finds solution in polynomial time and has the same complexity as the currently best known infeasible interior-point methods. Penalty function is an important tool in solving many constrained optimization problems in areas such as industrial design and management. In this paper, we study exactness and algorithm of an objective penalty function for inequality constrained optimization. In terms of exactness, this objective penalty function is at least as good as traditional exact penalty functions. Especially, in the case of a global solution, the exactness of the proposed objective penalty function shows a significant advantage. The sufficient and necessary stability condition used to determine whether the objective penalty function is exact for a global solution is proved. Based on the objective penalty function, an algorithm is developed for finding a global solution to an inequality constrained optimization problem and its global convergence is also proved under some conditions. Furthermore, the sufficient and necessary calmness condition on the exactness of the objective penalty function is proved for a local solution. An algorithm is presented in the paper in finding a local solution, with its convergence proved under some conditions. Finally, numerical experiments show that a satisfactory approximate optimal solution can be obtained by the proposed algorithm.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the question of solving equilibrium problems—formulated as complementarity problems and, more generally, mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints (MPECs)—as nonlinear programs, using an interior-point approach. These problems pose theoretical difficulties for nonlinear solvers, including interior-point methods. We examine the use of penalty methods to get around these difficulties and provide substantial numerical results. We go on to show that penalty methods can resolve some problems that interior-point algorithms encounter in general. An erratum to this article is available at .  相似文献

We propose two line search primal-dual interior-point methods for nonlinear programming that approximately solve a sequence of equality constrained barrier subproblems. To solve each subproblem, our methods apply a modified Newton method and use an 2-exact penalty function to attain feasibility. Our methods have strong global convergence properties under standard assumptions. Specifically, if the penalty parameter remains bounded, any limit point of the iterate sequence is either a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) point of the barrier subproblem, or a Fritz-John (FJ) point of the original problem that fails to satisfy the Mangasarian-Fromovitz constraint qualification (MFCQ); if the penalty parameter tends to infinity, there is a limit point that is either an infeasible FJ point of the inequality constrained feasibility problem (an infeasible stationary point of the infeasibility measure if slack variables are added) or a FJ point of the original problem at which the MFCQ fails to hold. We provide a unifying geometric framework for the analysis of general classes of duality schemes and penalty methods for nonconvex constrained optimization problems. We present a separation result for nonconvex sets via general concave surfaces. We use this separation result to provide necessary and sufficient conditions for establishing strong duality between geometric primal and dual problems. Using the primal function of a constrained optimization problem, we apply our results both in the analysis of duality schemes constructed using augmented Lagrangian functions, and in establishing necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of penalty methods.  相似文献

We present the convergence analysis of the inexact infeasible path-following (IIPF) interior-point algorithm. In this algorithm, the preconditioned conjugate gradient method is used to solve the reduced KKT system (the augmented system). The augmented system is preconditioned by using a block triangular matrix. The KKT system is solved approximately. Therefore, it becomes necessary to study the convergence of the interior-point method for this specific inexact case. We present the convergence analysis of the inexact infeasible path-following (IIPF) algorithm, prove the global convergence of this method and provide complexity analysis. Communicated by Y. In this paper, we propose an infeasible interior-point algorithm for symmetric optimization problems using a new wide neighborhood and estimating the central path by an ellipse. In contrast of most interior-point algorithms for symmetric optimization which search an \(\varepsilon\)-optimal solution of the problem in a small neighborhood of the central path, our algorithm searches for optimizers in a new wide neighborhood of the ellipsoidal approximation of central path. The convergence analysis of the algorithm is shown and it is proved that the iteration bound of the algorithm is \(O ( r\log\varepsilon^{-1} ) \) which improves the complexity bound of the recent proposed algorithm by Liu et al. (J. Optim. Theory Appl., 2013,  https://doi.org/10.1007/s10957-013-0303-y) for symmetric optimization by the factor \(r^{\frac{1}{2}}\) and matches the currently best-known iteration bound for infeasible interior-point methods.  相似文献

Generalized stationary points of the mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (MPEC) are studied to better describe the limit points produced by interior point methods for MPEC. A primal-dual interior-point method is then proposed, which solves a sequence of relaxed barrier problems derived from MPEC. Global convergence results are deduced under fairly general conditions other than strict complementarity or the linear independence constraint qualification for MPEC (MPEC-LICQ). It is shown that every limit point of the generated sequence is a strong stationary point of MPEC if the penalty parameter of the merit function is bounded. Otherwise, a point with certain stationarity can be obtained. In exact arithmetic, the simplex method applied to a particular linear programming problem instance with real data either shows that it is infeasible, shows that its dual is infeasible, or generates optimal solutions to both problems. Most interior-point methods, on the other hand, do not provide such clear-cut information. If the primal and dual problems have bounded nonempty sets of optimal solutions, they usually generate a sequence of primal or primaldual iterates that approach feasibility and optimality. But if the primal or dual instance is infeasible, most methods give less precise diagnostics. There are methods with finite convergence to an exact solution even with real data. Unfortunately, bounds on the required number of iterations for such methods applied to instances with real data are very hard to calculate and often quite large. Our concern is with obtaining information from inexact solutions after a moderate number of iterations. We provide general tools (extensions of the Farkas lemma) for concluding that a problem or its dual is likely (in a certain well-defined sense) to be infeasible, and apply them to develop stopping rules for a homogeneous self-dual algorithm and for a generic infeasible-interior-point method for linear programming. These rules allow precise conclusions to be drawn about the linear programming problem and its dual: either near-optimal solutions are produced, or we obtain certificates that all optimal solutions, or all feasible solutions to the primal or dual, must have large norm. Our rules thus allow more definitive interpretation of the output of such an algorithm than previous termination criteria. We give bounds on the number of iterations required before these rules apply.
