In the present study, the effects of fin thickness on the heat transfer and friction characteristics of fin-and-tube heat exchangers having herringbone wavy fin configuration are experimentally investigated. The experimental apparatus consists essentially of a well insulated open wind tunnel and herringbone wavy fin-and-tube heat exchangers made from aluminium plate finned, copper tube. Air and water are used to be working fluids in air-side and tube-side, respectively. A total of 10 samples of the fin-and-tube heat exchangers are tested. The experimental procedures are conducted by keeping the inlet water temperature at a pre-selected value, adjusting the water volumetric flow rate at a specific value and varying the air velocity. The results are presented as plots of the Colburn factor and friction factor against the Reynolds number based on the fin collar outside diameter (ReDc). From the results, it is found that for number of tube rows (N) = 2, the Colburn factor increases with increasing fin thickness. For N 4, the Colburn factor decreases with increasing fin thickness when ReDc < 1800, and increases with increasing fin thickness when ReDc > 2500. The friction factor increases with increasing fin thickness when fin pitch (Fp) 1.81 mm.  相似文献

Data reduction for air-side performance of fin-and-tube heat exchangers   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
The present study focuses on the data reduction method to obtain the air-side performance of fin-and-tube heat exchangers. The data reduction methodology for air-side heat transfer coefficients in the literature is not based on a consistent approach. This paper recommends standard procedures for dry surface heat transfer in finned-tube heat exchangers having water on the tube-side. Inconsistencies addressed include the -NTU relationships, calculation of the tube-side heat transfer coefficient, calculation of fin efficiency, and whether entrance and exit loss should be included in the reduction of friction factors. Use of the recommended standardized methodology will provide more meaningful data for use in the development of correlations, or for performance comparison purposes.  相似文献

Air-side heat transfer and friction characteristics of five kinds of fin-and-tube heat exchangers, with the number of tube rows (N = 12) and the diameter of tubes (Do = 18 mm), have been experimentally investigated. The test samples consist of five types of fin configurations: crimped spiral fin, plain fin, slit fin, fin with delta-wing longitudinal vortex generators (VGs) and mixed fin with front 6-row vortex-generator fin and rear 6-row slit fin. The heat transfer and friction factor correlations for different types of heat exchangers were obtained with the Reynolds numbers ranging from 4000 to 10000. It was found that crimped spiral fin provides higher heat transfer and pressure drop than the other four fins. The air-side performance of heat exchangers with the above five fins has been evaluated under three sets of criteria and it was shown that the heat exchanger with mixed fin (front vortex-generator fin and rear slit fin) has better performance than that with fin with delta-wing vortex generators, and the slit fin offers best heat transfer performance at high Reynolds numbers. Based on the correlations of numerical data, Genetic Algorithm optimization was carried out, and the optimization results indicated that the increase of VG attack angle or length, or decrease of VG height may enhance the performance of vortex-generator fin. The heat transfer performances for optimized vortex-generator fin and slit fin at hand have been compared with numerical method.  相似文献

The heat transfer and friction characteristics of the heat exchangers having sinusoidal wave fins were experimentally investigated. Twenty-nine samples having different waffle heights (1.5 and 2.0 mm), fin pitches (1.3–1.7 mm) and tube rows (1–3) were tested. Focus was given to the effect of waffle configuration (herringbone or sinusoidal) on the heat transfer and friction characteristics. Results show that the sinusoidal wave geometry provides higher heat transfer coefficients and friction factors than the herringbone wave geometry, and the difference increases as the number of row increases. The j/f ratios of the herringbone wave geometry, however, are larger than those of the sinusoidal wave geometry. Compared with the herringbone wave geometry, the sinusoidal wave geometry yielded a weak row effect, which suggests a superior heat transfer performance at the fully developed flow region for the sinusoidal wave geometry. Possible reasoning is provided considering the flow characteristics in wavy channels. Within the present geometric variations, the effect of waffle height on the heat transfer coefficient was not prominent. The effect of fin pitch was also negligible. Existing correlations highly overpredicted both the heat transfer coefficients and friction factors. A new correlation was developed based on the present data.  相似文献

The effect of salt spray corrosion on the air-side hydrophilicity and the thermal-hydraulic performance of copper-fin heat exchangers were experimentally investigated. Artificial accelerated method of salt spray corrosion on the copper-fin heat exchangers was used for simulating the actual corroded heat exchangers. The experimental results show that, the contact angles increase with the increase of salt spray corrosion hours, which results in the degradation of the hydrophilicity of copper fin. The air-side heat transfer coefficients decrease and pressure drops increase with the increase of corrosion hours. The effect of salt spray corrosion on the heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops become more obvious with the increase of inlet air velocity. The heat transfer coefficients of the corroded copper-fin heat exchangers decrease by 4.4–34.0% and the pressure drop increase by 5.2–26.1% comparing with those of the uncorroded copper-fin heat exchanger at the inlet air velocity ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 m/s.  相似文献

Three dimensional numerical studies were performed for laminar heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of wavy fin heat exchangers with elliptic/circular tubes by body-fitted coordinates system. The simulation results of circular tube were compared with the experiment data, then circular and elliptic (e = b/a = 0.6) arrangements with the same minimum flow cross-sectional area were compared. A max relative heat transfer gain of up to 30% is observed in the elliptic arrangement, and corresponding friction factor only increased by about 10%. The effects of five factors on wavy fin and elliptic tube heat exchangers were examined: Reynolds number (based on the smaller ellipse axis, 500  4000), eccentricity (b/a, 0.6  1.0), fin pitch (Fp/2b, 0.05  0.4), fin thickness (Ft/2b, 0.006  0.04) and tube spanwise pitch (S1/2b, 1.0  2.0). The results show that with the increasing of Reynolds number and fin thickness, decreasing of the eccentricity and spanwise tube pitch, the heat transfer of the finned tube bank are enhanced with some penalty in pressure drop. There is an optimum fin pitch (Fp/2b = 0.1) for heat transfer, but friction factor always decreases with increase of fin pitch. And when Fp/2b is larger than 0.25, it has little effects on heat transfer and pressure drop. The results were also analyzed from the view point of field synergy principle. It was found that the effects of the five factors on the heat transfer performance can be well described by the field synergy principle.  相似文献

Wing-type vortex generators for fin-and-tube heat exchangers   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The effect of wing-type vortex generators on heat transfer and pressure drop of a fin-and-tube heat exchanger element was investigated. Local heat transfer was measured by liquid crystal thermography on the fin in the Reynolds number range of 600–2700. Flow losses were estimated from the measured pressure drop of an element. Delta winglets were used as vortex generators. Four fin-and-tube configurations were tested, an inline and a staggered arrangement, each with plain fins and with fins with a pair of vortex generators behind each tube. For the inline tube arrangement the vortex generators increase the heat transfer by 55–65% with a corresponding increase of 20–45% in the apparent friction factor. Results indicate that the vortex generators have the potential to reduce considerably the size and mass of heat exchangers for a given heat load.  相似文献

Turbulent pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics in tubes with three different kinds of internally longitudinal fin patterns (interrupted wavy, sinusoidal wavy and plain) are numerically investigated for Re = 904–4,520. The channel velocity, temperature, and turbulence fields are obtained to discern the mechanisms of heat transfer enhancement. Numerical results indicate that the steady and spatially periodic growth and disruption of cross-sectional vortices occur near the tube/fin walls along the streamwise locations. The thermal boundary layers near the tube/fin surfaces are thereby periodically interrupted, with heat transfer near the recirculation zones being enhanced. The overall heat transfer coefficients in wavy channels are higher than those in a plain fin channel, while with larger pressure drop penalties. At the same waviness, the interrupted wavy fin tube could enhance heat transfer by 72–90%, with more than 2–4 times of pressure drop penalty. Among the fins studied, the sinusoidal wavy fin has the best comprehensive performance.  相似文献

Accurate prediction of frost characteristics has crucial influence on designing effective heat exchangers. In this paper, a new CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) model has been proposed to predict the frost behaviour. The initial period of frost formation can be predicted and the influence of surface structure can be considered. The numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the performance of fin-and-tube heat exchanger under frost condition. The results have been validated by comparison of simulations with the data computed by empirical formulas. The transient local frost formation has been obtained. The average frost thickness, heat exchanger coefficient and pressure drop on air side has been analysed as well. In addition, the influence factors have also been discussed, such as fin pitch, relative humidity, air flow rate and evaporating temperature of refrigerant.  相似文献

The results obtained from naphthalene sublimation heat/mass analogy experiments in selecting the optimum geometrical parameters of tube bank fin heat exchanger with fins mounted with vortex generators are compared with the results obtained from the condensing experiments of the real heat exchangers with vortex generators punched out on the fins. The results declare that VGs pouched or mounted on fin surfaces have only limited effects on heat transfer performance in the studied configurations; naphthalene sublimation method can be used to select fin patterns with reasonable reliability.  相似文献

A new method to assess the condensate drainage behavior of the air-side surface of compact heat exchangers—dynamic dip testing—is introduced. The new method is shown to provide highly repeatable data for real-time drainage. Results from experiments with more than 20 flat-tube and round-tube-and-fin heat exchangers are presented, and the data clearly show geometrical effects such as the impact of the tube type on condensate drainage. By comparing the results from dip testing to wind-tunnel experiments for the same heat exchangers, we find dip testing can serve as a powerful tool for assessing the condensate retention behavior. The coils retaining the most and the least condensate in a steady-state wind-tunnel test, likewise held the most and the least in a dip test. However, different amounts of water are retained on the air-side surface during dip tests and wind-tunnel tests. A model based on gravity, surface tension and drag effects is developed to help understand and predict the drainage behavior of heat exchangers. The new model and experimental approach are useful in screening heat exchangers for condensate retention and for assessing off-cycle drainage behavior.  相似文献

Tube bank fin heat exchanger is one of the most compact heat exchangers, and it is widely used in industry equipments. The flat tube bank fin heat exchangers with vortex generators (VGs) have significant good heat transfer performance, and are used as radiators of locomotive. Here, we study heat transfer enhancement of a new fin where VGs are mounted on both surfaces of the fin. The heat transfer performance of this pattern is evaluated by a numerical method, and the results are compared with those obtained, under identical mass flow rate, when the VGs are mounted only on one surface of the fin. The results reveal that using this new pattern the height of VGs can be reduced and still obtain satisfactory heat transfer enhancement, while the pressure drop is reduced. The results also reveal that if VGs on one surface of the fin is determined, the locations where VGs are mounted on other surface of the same fin are very important, with configurations studied in this paper, depending on the value of Reynolds number, there exists an optimum location with which best heat transfer performance can be obtained.  相似文献

This study proposed a new method, namely a tube-by-tube reduction method to analyze the performance of fin-and-tube heat exchangers having plain fin configuration under dehumidifying conditions. The mass transfer coefficients which seldom reported in the open literature, are also presented. For fully wet conditions, it is found that the reduced results for both sensible heat transfer performance and the mass transfer performance by the present method are insensitive to change of inlet humidity. Unlike those tested in fully dry condition, the sensible heat transfer performance under dehumidification is comparatively independent of fin pitch. The ratio of the heat transfer characteristic to mass transfer characteristic (hc,o/hd,o Cp,a) is in the range of 0.6~1.0, and the ratio is insensitive to change of fin spacing at low Reynolds number. However, a slight drop of the ratio of (hc,o/hd,o Cp,a) is seen with the decrease of fin spacing when the Reynolds number is sufficient high. This is associated with the more pronounced influence due to condensate removal by the vapor shear. Correlations are proposed to describe the heat and mass performance for the present plate fin configurations. These correlations can describe 89% of the Chilton Colburn j-factor of the heat transfer (jh) within 15% and can correlate 81% of the Chilton Colburn j-factor of the mass transfer (jm) within 20%.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical method for determining heat transfer coefficients in cross-flow heat exchangers with extended heat exchange surfaces. Coefficients in the correlations defining heat transfer on the liquid- and air-side were determined using a non-linear regression method. Correlation coefficients were determined from the condition that the sum of squared fluid temperature differences at the heat exchanger outlet, obtained by measurements and those calculated, achieved minimum. Minimum of the sum of the squares was found using the Levenberg-Marquardt method. The outlet temperature of the fluid leaving the heat exchanger was calculated using the mathematical model describing the heat transfer in the heat exchanger. Since the conditions at the liquid-side and those at the air-side are identified simultaneously, the derived correlations are valid in a wide range of flow rate changes of the air and liquid. This is especially important for partial loads of the exchanger, when the heat transfer rate is lower than the nominal load. The correlation for the average heat transfer coefficient on the air-side based on the experimental data was compared with the correlation obtained from numerical simulation of 3D fluid and heat flow, performed by means of the commercially available CFD code. The numerical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the condensate carryover phenomena in dehumidifying heat exchangers. Two wavy finned-tube coils were tested, for which the fin surfaces were treated to provide either low or high contact angles. The receding contact angle on the fins of the two coils were 70° and 10°, respectively. The distribution of condensate carryover was measured along the tunnel bottom downstream from the coil for different air frontal velocities. As the frontal velocity increases, the quantity of condensate carryover increases, and the condensate is blown further from the coil. The receding contact angle on the fin surface is a key factor controlling the condensate carryover characteristics. The coil having a 10° receding contact angle shows significantly less condensate carryover than the coil having a 70° receding contact angle. Numerous condensate droplets and bridges were observed on the fin surfaces of the 70° receding contact angle coil; however, few were seen for the 10° receding contact angle coil. The dominant carryover results from droplets formed from bridged condensate, and the diameter of the resulting droplets is approximately 3.0 mm.  相似文献

The thermal contact resistance is a principal parameter interfering with heat transfer in a fin–tube heat exchanger. However, the thermal contact resistance in the interface between tubes and fins has not been clearly investigated. The objective of the present study is to examine the thermal contact conductance for various fin–tube heat exchangers with tube diameter of 9.52 mm and to find a correlation between the thermal contact conductance and effective factors such as expansion ratio, fin type, fin spacing and hydrophilic coating. In this study, experiments have been conducted only to measure heat transfer rate between hot and cold water. To minimize heat loss to the ambient air by the natural convection fin–tube heat exchangers have been placed in an insulated vacuum chamber. Also, a numerical scheme has been employed to calculate the thermal contact conductance with the experimental data. As a result, a new correlation including the influences of expansion ratio, slit of fin and fin coating has been introduced, and the portion of each thermal resistance has been estimated in the fin–tube heat exchangers with 9.52 mm tube.  相似文献

A simulation model of a fin-and-tube heat exchanger is presented. The effect of the relative humidity, air speed, fin base temperature, and inlet air temperature on the estimation of the overall heat-transfer coefficient and fin efficiency under wet conditions is also investigated. This model considers a non-uniform airflow velocity as well as a variable sensible heat transfer coefficient.  相似文献

This paper describes the development of an experimental facility to determine the heat transfer and flow friction characteristics of heat exchange surfaces by the modified single blow technique and the application of this transient technique to evaluate the performance characteristics of louvered fin heat exchangers. The reliability of implementing the modified single blow technique on the developed test facility is borne out by the good agreement in the heat transfer and flow friction data for the parallel plate test core when compared with theoretical and empirical correlations available in the literature. Performance evaluation of two louvered fin surfaces used mainly for cooling of large land and marine based electrical power generator sets is carried out and compared with similar louvered fin surfaces available in the literature. On the basis of dimensionless area and power factors, it was found that the flat fin is slightly superior in overall performance than its corrugated counterpart for low Reynolds numbers. Both surfaces are however inferior in performance when compared with the flat fin surface of Achaichia and Cowell and the corrugated fin surface of Davenport. Use of the j/f ratio as an approximate figure of merit led to an inaccurate assessment of the performance of the louvered fin heat exchanger surfaces evaluated in this study. In this study the flow within an interrupted fin design, the inclined louvered fin, is investigated experimentally through visualisation. The inclined louvered fin is a hybrid of the offset strip fin and standard louvered fin, aimed at improved performance at low Reynolds numbers for compact heat exchangers. The flow behaviour is studied in six geometrically different configurations over a range of Reynolds numbers and quantified using the concept of ‘fin angle alignment factor’. The transition from steady laminar to unsteady flow was studied in detail. The fin geometry had a very large impact on the transitional flow behaviour, especially on vortex shedding.  相似文献

The Investigation of the two-phase flow patterns and their transitions during the condensation has gained increasing interest and importance from the well-known phenomenon that the heat transfer characteristics are strongly dependent on the flow patterns. Therefore, it is very important to study on which heat transfer enhancement approach is suitable for an individual flow pattern inside a condenser, so that an accurate heat transfer mechanism can be understood that is consistent with the flow patterns. The condensation heat transfer for R134a in the two kinds of in-tube three-dimensional (3-D) micro-fin tubes with different geometries is experimentally investigated. Based on the flow pattern observations, the flow patterns in the Soliman flow regime map are divided into two-flow regimes; one with the vapor-shear-dominant annular regime and the other with the gravitational-force-dominant stratified-wavy regime. The flow regime transition criterion between the annular regime and the stratified-wavy regime is at Fr equal to 2. In the annular regime, the heat transfer coefficients h of the two kinds of in-tube 3-D micro-fin tubes decreases as the vapor quality x decreases. The regressed condensation heat transfer correlation from the experimental data of the annular flow region is obtained. The dispersibility of the experimental data is inside the limits of ±25%. In the stratified-wavy regime, the average heat transfer coefficient h of the two kinds of in-tube 3-D micro-fin tubes increases as the mass flux increases and the number of micro fins in the 3-D micro-fin tube is not the controlling factor for the performance of a condensation heat transfer. The regressed condensation heat transfer correlation of the stratified-wavy flow regime is experimentally obtained. The dispersibility of the experimental data is inside the limits of ±22%. Combined with the criteria of flow pattern transitions, the correlations can be used for the design of a condenser with 3-D micro-fin tubes.  相似文献
