Polymeric core-shell systems were produced by a two-stage emulsion polymerization technique under fixed conditions: i) monodisperse seed latex with a sufficiently high particle number; ii) starved monomer-II addition; iii) water-soluble initiator; iv) incompatibility of core and shell polymer. From electron micrographs, it is not possible to determine where the second polymer is located within these two-stage emulsion polymers. The internal structure of the particles can be detected by small-angle x-ray scattering. The results indicate that; i) the emulsion polymerization process takes place in a small surface layer region of the seed particles, and ii) a small interfacial layer exists between the core and shell polymer.Part 6 of Polymerizations in the Presence of Seeds  相似文献

In the suspension polymerization of VCM, insoluble polymer particles are formed inside the monomer droplets. The growth and aggregation of these particles are responsible for important polymer properties, such as porosity. It is well established that the most characteristic polymer particles, the primary particles, are of a narrow distribution with a size (diameter) ranging from 0.10–0.20 m. This work studied the formation of primary particles based on the aggregation phenomena that take place inside a monomer droplet. This was done by formulating a population balance equation, which was based on the following considerations: a) polymerization occurs in both the monomer and the polymer phases; b) there is continuous formation of the basic particles in the monomer phase; c) the growth of the polymer particles occurs as a result of both polymerization in the polymer phase and aggregation of the particles; d) the colloidal properties of the particles that are responsible for the aggregation phenomena were considered to be the net result of attraction and repulsion energies. It was shown that for particles carrying a constant charge it was not possible to predict the formation of primary particles of size 0.10–0.20 m. The particle size distribution had a mode diameter equal to the diameter of the basic particles. Consequently, the particle charge was allowed to vary in a way proportional to the particle radius raised to a power coefficient. For values of the coefficient greater than zero, i. e., when the particle charge increased during polymerization, the aggregation of the basic particles was efficient enough to result in the formation of large primary particles.  相似文献

The boundary region separating a latex particle from the surrounding medium has a great influence on the properties of latex dispersions. Four types of polystyrene and polystyrene/comonomer latices differing greatly in the structure of the boundary region were prepared. The first part of a series of papers reports on the preparation of the various latex dispersions. Mean particle sizes were obtained from simple turbidity measurements, quasi-elastic light scattering, and electron micrographs. The behavior of the particles in the centrifugal force field is a simple tool for detecting aggregation tendencies that are not directly related to salt stability. The BET-surface area agrees with the area calculated from the mean particle size when a sharp boundary and smooth surface is developed between the particle and the surrounding medium. In the case of particles with extended boundary regions (core/shell particles or particles with hairy envelopes), film formation reduces the specific surface area. Removal of soluble oligomers and polymers from the boundary region during subsequent treatments (purification and centrifugation before freeze-drying) can increase the surface area considerably.  相似文献

Anomalous polymer particles with a partial protuberance like octopus ocellatus were produced under alkaline conditions by seeded emulsion copolymerization for styrene and butyl acrylate, with styrene-butyl acrylate-methacrylic acid terpolymer emulsion as seed. The mechanism of production of the polymer particles was studied. By transmission electron microscopic observation of the particles at each conversion, it was observed that the anomalous polymer particles were produced by partial growth of each of the individual seed particles throughout polymerization. Ionization of the carboxyl groups and low viscosity in the growing particles during the process of polymerization were important factors for partial growth.Part CIII of the series Studies on Suspension and Emulsion.  相似文献

-potentials of a silica suspension and three types of polystyrene latex suspensions with different surface charge groups were measured, as a function of the particle concentration () in the suspension over a wide range, using the colloid vibration potential (CVP) technique. The concentration dependence of the-potential in silica suspension is explained well by Levine et al.s [1] cell model theory, verifying the applicability of the cell model to the CVP in silica suspension. However, the-potential of latex suspensions ordinarily decreases as the particle concentration increases, even after being corrected by the term of (1-). This tendency is especially noticeable in the systems that have particles with high surface charge densities. Furthermore, the conductivity measurements of these suspensions reveal that the conductivity of these systems, especially in their highly charged state, increases as the particle concentration is increased; opposite in tendency to silica suspensions. These new findings can be explained as follows: on the highly charged surface of a latex particle, a polyelectrolyte-like (hairy) layer is present, which overlaps at some point. This permits interparticle surface conduction and results in the abnormal behavior of CVP in these systems.  相似文献

The effects of particle size on polyacrylamide (PAAm,M w =59×104, 500×104) adsorption were investigated using a series of well-characterized hematite (-Fe2O3) dispersions. The -Fe2O3 particles with highly monodisperse and nearly spherical shape ranged in radius from 23 nm to 300 nm. the maximum amount of PAAm adsorption (M m ) in each system, showed a steady increase with decreasing particle radius and was influenced strongly by particle concentrations in the medium. Furthermore, it was realized that the diameter of -Fe2O3 particles after treatment with PAAm under different particle concentrations decreased with increasing particle concentration. The relation between particle concentration in the medium and particle size after treatment was also influenced by the medium pH, i.e., at the medium pH close to the isoelectric point of -Fe2O3 particles (pHo=9.2), the particle size after treatment increased with increasing particle concentration. All these results suggest that in the system of ultra-fine particles, the mixing process between particle-particle and polymerparticle will play an important role on the conformation of adsorbed polymer layer.  相似文献

Micron-size monodisperse polystyrene/polydivinylbenzene (PS/PDVB) composite particles having highly crosslinked structures and vinyl groups were prepared as follows. First, 1.9 m-size monodisperse PS seed particles produced by dispersion polymerization were dispersed in ethanol/water (70/30, w/w) solution which dissolved divinylbenzene (DVB) monomer, benzoyl peroxide as an initiator and poly(vinyl alcohol) as a stabilizer. The PS seed particles were swollen with a large amount of DVB monomers to 4.3 m in diameter while keeping good monodispersity by the dynamic swelling method, where water was slowly added, continuously, with a micro feeder into the dispersion. And then, the seeded polymerization of the absorbed DVB was carried out.Part CXXXV of the series Studies on Suspension and Emulsion  相似文献

The dielectric behavior (, ) of three well-cleaned monodisperse polystyrene latexes having the same particle size and the same number of chemically-bound surface groups has been studied at a fixed microwave frequency (9.4 GHz), as a function of temperature and surface group (SO 4 , COO, OH).A large dielectric relaxation was observed in the sulfate-stabilized latex, which has the most polar surface end-group. The anomalous behavior in the thermal dependence of the hydroxyl and carboxyl-stabilized latexes (the OH latex being more pronounced than the COO latex) may originate from differences in the experimental conditions used for the preparation of such polymer colloids, or due to the presence of ionic species. On the basis of various dielectric models, the apparent volume fractions of the latexes were calculated. The amount of bound water around the latex particle was quantitatively correlated to the polarity of surface end-group (SO 4 > COO > OH). The differences between the calculated and actual values were not only a reflection of the thickness of vicinal water, but could also be indicative of the presence of oligomeric species in the suspension's medium (serum) of the latex. The permittivities of hydrated particle and of bound water were obtained with a non-linear iterative procedure.  相似文献

Micron-size monodisperse crosslinked polymer microspheres having chloromethyl groups were prepared by seeded copolymerization of styrene, divinylbenzene, and chloromethylstyrene in the presence of 2.1- monodisperse polystyrene seed particles produced by dispersion polymerization. The modification reaction of chloromethyl groups on the surfaces with polyamines such as triethylenetetramine and ethylenediamine was carried out. From the measurements of potential and the amount of chloride ion released, the introduction of a large number of cationic groups at the surfaces was confirmed.Part CXXXI of the series Studies on suspension and Emulsion.  相似文献

Free radical polymerization of acrylamide was carried out in nonionic microemulsions of water, an isoparaffinic oil, Isopar M and a blend of nonionic emulsifiers: a sorbitan sesquioleate and a polyoxyethylene sorbitol hexaoleate (HLB of the mixture: 9.3). The size and the stability of the latex particles formed after polymerization were studied as a function of monomer, emulsifier and electrolyte concentration. High emulsifier and high monomer contents favor obtaining high molecular weight polyacrylamides. It is shown that both the number of polymer chains contained in each latex particle and the size of the particles are essentially controlled by the acrylamide/emulsifier weight ratio.  相似文献

The decomposition rates of potassium persulfate (KPS) in aqueous solutions containing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in the presence of polystyrene or poly(methyl methacrylate) particles as models of emulsion polymerization systems were measured by isotachophoresis. Free SDS molecules dispersed in the monomolecular state had an ability to accelerate the KPS decomposition, but SDS molecules adsorbed onto the polymer particles did not accelerate it.Part CXX of the series of Studies on Suspension and Emulsion  相似文献

The solubilization behavior of oleyl alcohol by pure and mixtures of surfactants systems have been studied in terms of the maximum additive concentration (MAC), the solubilizing power, and the particle sizes of micelles with or without oleyl alcohol. The surfactants used are amphoteric (N,N-dimethyl-N-lauroyl lysine, DMLL; N,N,N-trimethyl-N-lauroyl lysine, TMLL; N,N-dimethyl-N-(carboxymethyl)-lauryl ammonium, DMCL), anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) and nonionic (alkyl polyoxyethylene ethers). The maximum additive concentration of oleyl alcohol by pure surfactants is larger by nonionic surfactants than by others. For a nonionic surfactant system mixed with DMLL, the mixing effect of surfactant on the increase in the MAC is not recognized. While, for DMLL mixed with SDS, the MAC becomes larger than that by pure surfactants. This may be attributed to the fact that the large micellar size will result in increasing the maximum additive concentration.  相似文献

Polystyrene (PS) (1)/Poly(n-butyl acrylate (BA)-methacrylic acid (MAA)) (2) structured particle latexes were prepared by emulsion polymerization using monodisperse polystyrene latex seed (118 nm) and different BA/MAA ratios. Three main aspects have been investigated: i) the polymerization kinetics; ii) the particle morphology as a function of reaction time; iii) the distribution of MAA units between the water phase and the polymer particles. The amount of MAA in the shell copolymer was found to be the main factor controlling the particle shape and morphology. The shape of the structured particles was, generally, non-spherical, and the shape irregularities increased as a particles was, generally, non-spherical, and the shape irregularities increased as a function of reaction time. At the beginning of the second stage reaction, new small particles were observed, which coalesced onto the PS seed as the polymerization proceeded. The distribution of the MAA groups in the latex particles and the serum was analyzed by alkali/back-acid titration, using ionic exchanged latexes. No MAA groups were detected in the latex serum. Due to the lowTg of the BA-MAA copolymers, alkali conductimetric titrations accounted for all the MAA groups on and within the polymer particles. Therefore, for these systems, this method is not only limited to a thin surface layer, as it is often assumed.  相似文献

In the case of cationic polystyrene latex, the adsorption of anionic surfactants involves a strong electrostatic interaction between both the particle and the surfactant, which may affect the conformation of the surfactant molecules adsorbed onto the latex-particle surface. The adsorption isotherms showed that adsorption takes place according to two different mechanisms. First, the initial adsorption of the anionic surfactant molecules on cationic polystyrene surface would be due to the attractive electrostatic interaction between both ionic groups, laying the alkyl-chains of surfactant molecules flat on the surface as a consequence of the hydrophobic interaction between these chains and the polystyrene particle surface, which is predominantly hydrophobic. Second, at higher surface coverage the adsorbed surfactant molecules may move into a partly vertical orientation with some head groups facing the solution. According to this second mechanism the hydrophobic interactions of hydrocarbon chains play an important role in the adsorption of surfactant molecules at high surface coverage. This would account for the very high negative mobilities obtained at surfactant concentration higher than 5×10–7 M. Under high surface-coverage conditions, some electrophoretic mobility measurements were performed at different ionic strength. The appearance of a maximum in the mobility-ionic strength curves seems to depend upon alkyl-chain length. Also the effects of temperature and pH on mobilities of anionic surfactant-cationic latex particles have been studied. The mobility of the particles covered by alkyl-sulphonate surfactants varied with the pH in a similar manner as it does with negatively charged sulphated latex particles, which indicates that the surfactant now controls the surface charge and the hydrophobic-hydrophilic character of the surface.Dedicated to the memory of Dr. Safwan Al-Khouri IbrahimPresented at the Euchem Workshop on Adsorption of Surfactants and Macromolecules from Solution, Åbo (Turku), Finland, June 1989  相似文献

High-ammonia latex concentrate prepared from doubly-concentrifuged fieldHevea latex was exhaustively dialyzed to remove any residual water-soluble non-rubber constituents. The specially purified latex was then treated with specific chemical reagents to modify the surface ionogenic groupings originally present on the latex particle surface. The electrophoretic mobility of the modified latexes was investigated as a function of pH. The change in electrokinetic properties of the surface-modified latex was explained in terms of chemical modification to the ionogenic groups of the adsorbed layer of proteins and long chain fatty acid soaps on the latex particle surface, the negative charges of which are primarily responsible for the colloidal stability of the latex. For comparison direct extraction of the long-chain fatty acid soaps from the specially purified latex by solvent was also carried out. Present results indicate that the number of carboxyl groups from the adsorbed long-chain fatty acid soaps plays a major role in the stabilization of the latex concentrate. In comparison the contribution of negative charges from the adsorbed proteins towards the stability of the latex is of less importance.  相似文献

Radiation-induced polymerization of monomers, for example N-methacryl-oxysuccinimide (MASu) and diethylene glycol dimethacrylate (2G), in ethyl propionate, was performed from +25°C to –78°C. The copoly (MASu/2G) microspheres were obtained in MASu monomer compositions of 30 wt % or below. The average particle diameter of copoly(MASu/2G, 20/80 wt %) microspheres obtained at irradiation temperatures of 25°, 0°, and –43 °C were 0.81±0.29, 0.63±0.26, and 0.90±0.43 m, respectively. No microspheres were formed when irradiated at –78 °C. The reactivity of the succinimide groups on the surface of copoly(MASu/2G, 20/80 wt%) microspheres was checked by reacting with ethylene diamine. The maximal amount of reacting succinimide groups was 9.4±0.5 nol/g, which corresponds to about 1 % of the total number of succinimide groups in the microsphere.  相似文献

Three series of segmented polyurethanes based on MDI, variable chain extender, and polypropylene oxide of MW=1000, 2000, and 3000 were synthesized and their dielectric behavior examined.Dielectric relaxations in the segmented polyurethanes were investigated between –150°C and +150°C in the 100 Hz to 10 kHz range. In general, three transitions, designated as, , and were observed, and ascribed in accordance with calorimetric relaxations to glass transitions of the hard and soft segments, and Shatzki-type motions, respectively. The effect of structure variables such as soft segment size, type of chain extender (ethylene glycol, butane diol, and hexane diol) and soft segment concentration, as well as the effect of interaction of the phases on dielectric properties was discussed. It was found that a certain degree of phase mixing exists in all series, detected by the variation of theT g of the soft segment with soft segment concentration, contrary to DSC results, which was ascribed to thermal treatment prior to the dielectric measurements. It appears that interfacial polarization becomes important only above the transition temperature.  相似文献

Radiation-induced dispersion polymerization of 1-methacryloxybenzotriazole (MABt) in ethyl propionate starts as homogeneous mixture and the resulting polymer precipitates as spherical particles. Formation, size, and shape of polymer particles are strongly dependent on the initial monomer concentration. Three regions can be distinguished: formation of deformed particles at concentrations of 15 w/v-% MABt; formation of spherical particles at concentrations from 18 to 35 w/v-% MABt; no precipitation of polymer at concentrations of 40 w/v-% MABt. The spherical particles at 20 w/v-% MABt had a diameter of 0.54 ± 0.31 m for 3 kGy irradiation and 2.93±0.68 m for 30 kGy. The number distribution of the microspheres shows that the spherical particles with small sizes formed at low irradiation dose (low conversion) disappears with increasing irradiation dose because of multi-coating by newly produced polymer.  相似文献

Polycationic polymers have been obtained through a two-step procedure. First, poly-vinylbenzylchloride [P(VBC)] latexes were prepared under emulsifier-free conditions using a cationic initiator: 2,2-azobis(2-amidinopropane) hydrochloride; then the resulting latexes were reacted with trimethylamine. Particular attention was paid to side reactions occurring during the hydrolysis of the chloromethyl groups and the crosslinking reaction due to a transfer reaction onto polymer. The influence of various parameters on the particle size and structure of latexes as well as secondary reactions were investigated through a careful characterization.  相似文献
