Dynamic light scattering is used to probe the fluctuation modes of a liquid crystal exhibiting twist grain boundary (TGB) structure. At the chiral nematic to proposed "chiral line liquid" phase transition, anomalous temperature dependence in the fluctuation spectrum and an instability in the helicoidal director structure signify developing TGB order. At lower temperatures, the behavior of the smectic layer-director fluctuations ("soft" mode) indicates that the previously identified commensurate TGB(A) phase may in fact be a TGB(C) phase with an unusually small tilt angle.  相似文献

We present experimental evidence and theoretical justification for the phenomenon of bistable electrooptical switching in nematic liquid crystals doped with chiral compounds so that the ground state corresponds to a 360° helical twist of the director. The system exhibits switching between the ground and a metastable unwound states. The observed effect differs from the well-known Berreman-Heffner bistable switching by the absence of a topologically nonequivalent ground state of the liquid crystal layer with a 180° twist of the director.  相似文献

We present the design of a transflective and low-power LCD using a low-twist vertically aligned liquid crystal (LC) cell, achieved by blending a chiral additive with a patterned reflector in a single-domain configuration. Unlike the conventional single-domain transflective LCD, in which it is possible to optimize only one of the transmissive and reflective regions, the device suggests that it is possible to optimize both the transmission and reflection design to obtain favorable results in both reflective and transmissive light conditions by optimizing the chiral pitch and twist angle. From the parameter space diagram (PSD) method, which does not include the information on chiral pitch and the nonuniform LC director tilt angle, optimization focused on the transmissive region is performed. By analyzing the relation between the transmittance and the chiral pitch under the applied voltage, the optimized twist angle and chiral pitch are proposed. It is described that the optimized twist angle is also available for the reflective region by the dynamic PSD method by considering the average tilt angle under applied voltage.  相似文献

利用光学相位延迟法,观察到平行排列丝状液晶在超短脉冲激光(10ns)激励下的瞬态扭曲形变.实验结果表明,虽然脉冲激光的电场强度远远大于液晶发生扭曲形变的阈值,但并不能保证液晶会发生瞬态扭曲形变.这主要是因为脉冲激光的激励时间非常短,而液晶分子发生扭曲形变的响应时间相对较长,从而使其来不及形变.分析发现:激励激光的偏振方向与平行排列丝状液晶分子的最佳夹角是45°.利用此条件,观察到掺微量D型苏氨酸卟啉的平行排列丝状液晶在超短脉冲激光激励后具有记忆效应,这在光存储和记忆显示方面有很大的实用价值.  相似文献

The deformation of cholesteric elastomers by mechanical stress applied parallel to the helix axis is studied by calculation of the free-energy density. The Frank-elasticity contribution is taken into account. A chiral solvent, present at cross-linking time, is in general considered to be replaced after cross-linking by a solvent with different chirality. Two special cases considered are zero and unchanged solvent chirality, the first known as that of imprinted cholesteric elastomers, the latter equivalent to intrinsic cholesteric elastomers with chemically attached chiral groups. Depending on material parameters and imposed strain, the director can show a tilt towards the helix axis up to the maximum tilt, corresponding to a nematic state. In case of intrinsic elastomers with low conformation anisotropy, direct transitions from untilted to nematic states can be induced by straining. The helix structure of the director field is coarsened with an average wave number different to that of the information inscribed in the network at cross-linking time, if this lowers the average free-energy density. Switching between different states can be achieved with electric fields of reasonable values applied parallel to the helix axis. Spectra of the reflection of polarized light are calculated.  相似文献

The notion of an infinitesimal twist disclination loop known from solids is introduced into a chiral smectic C liquid crystal with parallel layers. Finite rectangular and straight twist disclinations are described as a synthesis of a planar distribution of infinitesimal loops. Then a small impurity which disturbs only the molecular arrangement in one smectic layer is modelled by a pair of infinitesimal twist disclination loops. The interaction between a 2π-twist disclination and a small impurity is estimated using the interaction energy between a straight 2π-twist disclination and an infinitesimal twist disclination loop.  相似文献

We study the nature of molecular deformations in a nematic liquid crystal film with elastic energy under homeotropic boundary conditions. The deformation in terms of splay, twist and bend fields of the director axis is found to be governed by the completely integrable Davey-Stewartson-I (DS-I) equation in (2+1) dimensions. Using the line soliton and breather solutions of the DS-I equation, the director axis is constructed, the components of which exhibit damped spatial oscillations. However, the splay and bend fields of the director axis exhibit localized structures of deformation.  相似文献

We explore the phase behavior of a rigid achiral bent-core model system. Nematic and smectic phases form at higher densities, whereas micelles and columns composed of chiral clusters of these molecules self-assemble at lower densities. No nucleation mechanism requiring transient chirality is possible in the formation of these chiral superstructures due to the rigid achiral nature of the substituents. We show the chiral micelles are minima of the potential energy surface using energy minimization and parallel tempering simulations. Chiral dopants were found to induce the system to adopt a consistent chiral twist direction, the first molecular scale computer simulation of this effect.  相似文献

A hybrid-aligned cell of the smectic A liquid material 8CB gives two stable director configurations, one of which is periodic and gives strong diffraction of light. This photonic lattice director profile arises from "frustration" caused by conflicting constraints imposed by the boundary conditions and the constant amplitude smectic density wave. A model is proposed which accords well with the experiment results, predicting correctly the dependence of the periodicity on the cell thickness and reproducing optical polarization microscopy results.  相似文献

We have worked out some consequences of the optical nonlinearities due to laser induced changes in the order parameter of a liquid crystal. The change in the order parameter can be affected by laser induced suppression of the director fluctuations in liquid crystals and or changes in the tilt angle of smectic liquid crystals. Both the processes lead to well known nonlinear optical effects like self-focusing, self-divergence, self-phase modulation, wave mixing, and so on. In addition, we predict some new phenomena like self-iridescence and new types of optical spatial solitons. In the case of chiral liquid crystals in the short wavelength limit the laser beam induces a change in the twist and at the long wavelength edge of the Bragg band it leads to temporal oscillations in the twist and the transmitted intensity. In smectic liquid crystals interesting periodic structures in a standing laser wave are to be expected.  相似文献

In this paper we study the macroscopic behavior of nematic side-chain liquid single crystal elastomers exposed to an external electric or magnetic field. For this purpose we use the framework of a continuum model. The geometries investigated comprise the bend and the twist geometry known from the classical Frederiks transition in low molecular weight liquid crystals. For the bend geometry we find a laterally homogeneous and a two-dimensional undulatory instability, which may compete at onset. In the case of the twist geometry three instabilities can occur at onset, two of which are two dimensional and clearly show undulations. As a major result we propose how the values of the twist coefficient K(2) and the values of the material parameters D(1) and D(2) connected to relative rotations between the director field and the polymer network can be determined from experimental observations. In addition, we explain why a twist experiment is probably the most suitable set-up in order to measure the material parameter D(1).  相似文献

We have studied the transport properties of a cholesteric liquid crystal by molecular dynamics simulation. The molecules consist of six soft ellipsoids of revolution, the axes of which are perpendicular to the line connecting their centres of symmetry. The angle between the symmetry axes of two adjacent ellipsoids is 7.5°, so the molecules are twisted. At high densities they form a cholesteric phase where their twist axes are oriented around the cholesteric axis and the symmetry axes of the ellipsoids are approximately parallel to the local director. We have been particularly interested in thermomechanical coupling or the Lehmann effect, which arises when a temperature gradient parallel to the cholesteric axis induces a torque that rotates the director. The converse is also possible: rotation of the director can drive a heat current. The thermal conductivity, the twist viscosity, the cross-coupling coefficient between the temperature gradient and the torque, and the cross-coupling coefficient between the director angular velocity and the heat current have been calculated by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation methods (NEMD) and by evaluation of the Green-Kubo relations from equilibrium simulations. Two ensembles have been utilized: the ordinary canonical ensemble and another ensemble where the director angular velocity is constrained to be a constant of motion. All the methods give consistent results for the twist viscosity and the thermal conductivity. The NEMD estimates of the cross-coupling coefficients agree within a relative error of 20%. This is consistent with the Onsager reciprocity relations that state that the two cross-coupling coefficients should be equal. The relative error of the Green-Kubo estimates is about 100% even though the order of magnitude is the same as that of the NEMD estimates.  相似文献

Second harmonic generation circular dichroism (SHG CD) measurements are performed on the B4 phase of a bent-core molecular system. Numerical analysis of SHG CD incorporating magnetic-dipole as well as electric-dipole interaction shows that the B4 phase is in a twist-grain-boundary structure with the helical axis along the bent direction of the molecules. The result is extremely important in the sense that achiral molecules are spontaneously optically resolved, i.e., deracemization, the chiral domains of which give rise to huge chiral nonlinear optical effect.  相似文献

A mechanism of developing a polarization in a chiral main-chain liquid-crystalline polymer by aligning the dipoles of the monomers is explored. It is shown that the polarization of a pure liquid crystal elastomer is zero in equilibrium due to rotation of the director in the elastomer. A constraint or specific non-ideality in the elastomer is required to prevent this relaxation of the director in order to realize a non-zero polarization. Three methods that circumvent this result are explored. We consider the effect of an oscillating shear, the pinning effect of the layers in a smectic-A composed of chiral smectogens and a binary mixture of chiral main chains and non-chiral side chains. We present a basic model for an instability leading to a novel type of electroconvection patterns observed above the splay Fréedericksz transition in nematics. Such patterns, with wave vector perpendicular to the director easy axis, are found in planar sandwich cells under crossed polarizers, they do not produce shadowgraph images at onset. An adaptation of the classical Carr Helfrich mechanism is introduced. The ground state is a tilted director field uniform in the cell plane. The proposed mechanism destabilizes this director field and leads to a structure with modulated out-of-plane (twist) deformations. Experimental confirmation is provided by polarizing microscopy. All experimental observations are qualitatively explained with the proposed model.  相似文献

The relationship between bistable surface anchoring and the pitch jump process is examined for a planar cholesteric liquid crystal. Introducing a high-order, azimuthal surface anchoring potential into a simple model to describe a cholesteric, we derive an expression for the director twist as the natural pitch of the liquid crystal is allowed to vary. Writing the energy in terms of the surface twist, we are able to determine the twists which minimize the total energy of the system. We demonstrate how a pitch jump is related to an energy exchange from one branch of metastable states to another. We then discuss how the co-existence of energy minima and their associated solution branches may help explain the thermal hysteresis observed experimentally in cholesterics in the neighbourhood of a pitch jump. The presence of a higher-order surface energy term can expand the range of anchoring strengths in which pitch jumps are possible. We also investigate the influence of bidirectional surface anchoring on the behaviour of the total energy. Intermediate quarter-turn pitch jumps can occur, depending on the relative strength of the high-order anchoring term, and these can have a significant effect on the system hysteresis.  相似文献
