By explicitly allowing for topology to change as a function of time, two-dimensional quantum gravity defined through causal dynamical triangulations gives rise to a new continuum string field theory. Within a matrix-model formulation we show that – rather remarkably – the associated sum over all genera can be performed in closed form, leading to a nonperturbative definition of CDT string field theory. We also obtain explicit formulas for the n-loop correlation functions. Our construction exhibits interesting parallels with previous, purely Euclidean treatments.  相似文献

We define a new scaling limit of matrix models which can be related to the method of causal dynamical triangulations (CDT) used when investigating two-dimensional quantum gravity. Surprisingly, the new scaling limit of the matrix models is also a matrix model, thus explaining why the recently developed CDT continuum string field theory [J. Ambjørn, R. Loll, Y. Watabiki, W. Westra, S. Zohren, arXiv: 0802.0719] has a matrix-model representation [J. Ambjørn, R. Loll, Y. Watabiki, W. Westra, S. Zohren, arXiv: 0804.0252].  相似文献

We derive a Kontsevich-type matrix model for the c = 1 string directly from the W solution of the theory. The model that we obtain is different from previous proposals, which are proven to be incorrect. Our matrix model contains the Penner and Kontsevich cases, and we study its quantum effective action. The simplicity of our model leads to an encouraging interpretation in the context of background-independent non-critical string field theory.  相似文献

By introducing diffeomorphism and local Lorentz gauge invariant holonomy fields, we study in the recent article [S.-S. Xue, Phys. Rev. D 82 (2010) 064039] the quantum Einstein–Cartan gravity in the framework of Regge calculus. On the basis of strong coupling expansion, mean-field approximation and dynamical equations satisfied by holonomy fields, we present in this Letter calculations and discussions to show the phase structure of the quantum Einstein–Cartan gravity, (i) the order phase: long-range condensations of holonomy fields in strong gauge couplings; (ii) the disorder phase: short-range fluctuations of holonomy fields in weak gauge couplings. According to the competition of the activation energy of holonomy fields and their entropy, we give a simple estimate of the possible ultra-violet critical point and correlation length for the second-order phase transition from the order phase to disorder one. At this critical point, we discuss whether the continuum field theory of quantum Einstein–Cartan gravity can be possibly approached when the macroscopic correlation length of holonomy field condensations is much larger than the Planck length.  相似文献

We couple Chern–Simons gauge theory to 3-dimensional topological gravity with the aim of investigating its quantum topological invariance. We derive the relevant BRST rules and Batalin–Vilkovisky action. Standard BRST transformations of the gauge field are modified by terms involving both its anti-field and the super-ghost of topological gravity. Beyond the obvious couplings to the metric and the gravitino, the BV action includes hitherto neglected couplings to the super-ghost. We use this result to determine the topological anomalies of certain higher ghost deformations of SU(N)SU(N) Chern–Simons theory, introduced years ago by Witten. In the context of topological strings these anomalies, which generalize the familiar framing anomaly, are expected to be cancelled by couplings of the closed string sector. We show that such couplings are obtained by dressing the closed string field with topological gravity observables.  相似文献

We consider a formulation of nonperturbative two-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to a single bosonic field (d=1 matter). Starting from a matrix realization of the discretized model, we express the continuum theory as a double scaling limit in which the 2D cosmological constant g tends towards a critical value gc, and the string coupling 1/N→0, with the scaling parameter ∝1n (g-gc)/(g-gc)N held fixed. We find that in this formulation logarithmic corrections already present at tree level persist to all higher genus, suggesting a behavior different from the previously considered cases of d<1 matter.  相似文献

We propose a new formulation of the space-time interpretation of the c = 1 matrix model. Our formulation uses the well-known leg-pole factor that relates the matrix model amplitudes to that of the 2-dimensional string theory, but includes fluctuations around the Fermi vacuum on both sides of the inverted harmonic oscillator potential of the double-scaled model, even when the fluctuations are small and confined entirely within the asymptotes in the phase plane. We argue that including fluctuations on both sides of the potential is essential for a consistent interpretation of the leg-pole transformed theory as a theory of space-time gravity. We reproduce the known results for the string theory tree-level scattering amplitudes for flat space and linear dilaton background as a special case. We show that the generic case corresponds to more general space-time backgrounds. In particular, we identify the parameter corresponding to background metric perturbation in string theory (black-hole mass) in terms of the matrix model variables. Possible implications of our work for a consistent non-perturbative definition of string theory as well as for quantized gravity and black-hole physics are discussed.  相似文献

We consider correlation functions in Neveu-Schwarz string theory coupled to two dimensional gravity. The actionfor the 2D gravity consists of the string induced Liouville action and the Jackiw-Teitelboim action describing pure 2D gravity. Then gravitational dressed dimensions of vertex operators are equal to their bare conformal dimensions. There are two possible interpretations of the model. Considering the 2D dilaton and the Liouville field as additional target space coordinates one gets ad+2-dimensional critical string. In thed-dimensional non critical string picture gravitational fields retain their original meaning and ford=4 one can get a mass spectrum via consistency requirements. In both cases a GSO projection is possible.  相似文献

We study covariant open bosonic string field theories on multiple Dp-branes by using the deformed cubic string field theory, which is equivalent to string field theory in the proper-time gauge. Constructing the Fock space representations of the three-string vertex and the four-string vertex on multiple Dp-branes, we obtain the field theoretical effective action in the zero-slope limit. On multiple D0-branes, the effective action reduces to the Banks-Fishler-Shenker-Susskind(BFSS) matrix model. We also discuss the relation between open string field theory on multiple D-instantons in the zero-slope limit and the Ishibashi-Kawai-Kitazawa-Tsuchiya(IKKT) matrix model. The covariant open string field theory on multiple Dp-branes could be useful to study the non-perturbative properties of quantum field theories in(p+1)-dimensions in the framework of the string theory. The non-zero-slope corrections may be evaluated systematically by using covariant string field theory.  相似文献

The unified theory of string and two-dimensional quantum gravity is considered. We introduce nontrivial dynamics for the two-dimensional metric gμν from the very beginning and calculate the path integral over the string coordinates and gμν without taking into account the order of integrations. Throughout the paper we use two different kinds of gauges - the covariant one of the harmonic type and also the conformal gauge, where the original (D + 1)-dimensional sigma model with quantum gravity becomes the (D+2)-dimensional sigma model on the classical background of gμν The general symmetries of the theory consist in the reparametrizations of the target space coordinates, in the conformal transformations of the metric and in the usual 2d diffeomorphisms. These symmetries do not disturb the structure of the background fields in the (D+2) -dimensional formulation. On the other hand the related arbitrariness of the renormalization does not affect the qualitative structure of the loop contributions to the Weyl anomaly. In the theory with quantum gravity the parameter a′ does not play as the parameter of the loop expansion. That is why the one-loop conditions of the Weyl invariance differs from the well known effective equations which arise in the standard approach when gμν is not quantized simultaneously with the string coordinates. Therefore, despite the new conditions of the Weyl invariance for the background fields are different from the standard effective equations, our result does not contradict to the standard approach. The new one-loop conditions of the Weyl invariance are much more complicated and contain the higher derivatives in the dilaton sector.  相似文献

We study a class of nonlocal systems which can be described by a local scalar field diffusing in an auxiliary radial dimension. As examples p-adic, open and boundary string field theory are considered on Minkowski, Friedmann–Robertson–Walker and Euclidean metric backgrounds. Starting from distribution-like initial field configurations which are constant almost everywhere, we construct exact and approximate nonlocal solutions. The Euclidean p-adic lump is interpreted as a solitonic brane, and the Euclidean kink of supersymmetric open string field theory as an instanton. Some relations between solutions of different string theories are highlighted also thanks to a reformulation of nonlocal systems as fixed points in a renormalization group flow.  相似文献

The target space theory of the N = (2,1) heterotic string may be interpreted as a theory of gravity coupled to matter in either 1 + 1 or 2 + 1 dimensions. Among the target space theories in 1 + 1 dimensions are the bosonic, type II, and heterotic string world-sheet field theories in a physical gauge. The (2 + 1)-dimensional version describes a consistent quantum theory of supermembranes in 10 + 1 dimensions. The unifying framework for all of these vacua is a theory of (2 + 2)-dimensional self-dual geometries embedded in 10 + 2 dimensions. There are also indications that the N = (2,1) string describes the strong-coupling dynamics of compactifications of critical string theories to two dimensions, and may lead to insights about the fundamental degrees of freedom of the theory.  相似文献

We present a brief review on the Raychaudhuri equations. Beginning with a summary of the essential features of the original article by Raychaudhuri and subsequent work of numerous authors, we move on to a discussion of the equations in the context of alternate non-Riemannian spacetimes as well as other theories of gravity, with a special mention on the equations in spacetimes with torsion (Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory). Finally, we give an overview of some recent applications of these equations in general relativity, quantum field theory, string theory and the theory of relativisitic membranes. We conclude with a summary and provide our own perspectives on directions of future research.   相似文献

From the modified Maxwell theory coupled to gravity, we establish a possible scenario of the violation of the Lorentz symmetry and write an effective metric for the cosmic string spacetime. Then, we investigate the arising of an analogue of the Anandan quantum phase for a relativistic Dirac neutral particle with a permanent magnetic dipole moment in the cosmic string spacetime under Lorentz symmetry breaking effects. Besides, we analyse the influence of the effects of the Lorentz symmetry violation and the topology of the defect on the Aharonov–Casher geometric quantum phase in the nonrelativistic limit.  相似文献

A construction of simplicial quantum gravity with an extremely strong form of diffeomorphism symmetry of the functional integral measure (Π d ℓ e−Spg) is proposed using the method of mathematical induction. By means of the formalism of introducing a continuous four-space approximating a lattice model in our previous paper this symmetry results in a “free gas” behavior of the vertices of the lattice on a C manifold. Furthermore, we argue that this kind of a simplicial quantum gravity model leads to a gravitational theory described by a local action in the long wavelength (continuum) limit.  相似文献

Making use of the fibre bundle theory to describe metric–affine gauge theories of gravity we are able to show that metric–affine gauge theory can be reduced to the Riemann–Cartan one. The price we pay for simplifying the geometry is the presence of matter fields associated with the nonmetric degrees of freedom of the original setup. Also, a possible framework for the construction of a quantum gravity theory is developed in the text.  相似文献

Computing the renormalized masses and S‐matrix elements in string theory, involving states whose masses are not protected from quantum corrections, requires defining off‐shell amplitude with certain factorization properties. While in the bosonic string theory one can in principle construct such an amplitude from string field theory, there is no fully consistent field theory for type II and heterotic string theory. In this paper we give a practical construction of off‐shell amplitudes satisfying the desired factorization property using the formalism of picture changing operators. We describe a systematic procedure for dealing with the spurious singularities of the integration measure that we encounter in superstring perturbation theory. This procedure is also useful for computing on‐shell amplitudes, as we demonstrate by computing the effect of Fayet‐Iliopoulos D‐terms in four dimensional heterotic string theory compactifications using this formalism.  相似文献

The topological string of the type A with a two-dimensional target space is studied, an explicit formula for the string partition function is found and the target space field theory reproducing this partition function is proposed. This field theory has an infinite set of additional deformations overlooked by the standard definition of the topological string. It can be in turn coupled to gravity, thereby realizing the “worldsheets for worldsheets” idea. We also exhibit the wave function nature of the string partition function and suggest a new relation to quantum integrable systems.  相似文献

We consider Chern–Simons theories for the Poincaré, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter groups in three dimensions which generalise the Chern–Simons formulation of 3d gravity. We determine conditions under which κ-Poincaré symmetry and its de Sitter and anti-de Sitter analogues can be associated to these theories as quantised symmetries. Assuming the usual form of those symmetries, with a timelike vector as deformation parameter, we find that such an association is possible only in the de Sitter case, and that the associated Chern–Simons action is not the gravitational one. Although the resulting theory and 3d gravity have the same equations of motion for the gauge field, they are not equivalent, even classically, since they differ in their symplectic structure and the coupling to matter. We deduce that κ-Poincaré symmetry is not associated to either classical or quantum gravity in three dimensions. Starting from the (non-gravitational) Chern–Simons action we explain how to construct a multi-particle model which is invariant under the classical analogue of κ-de Sitter symmetry, and carry out the first steps in that construction.  相似文献
