Particle fouling mechanisms in “dead-end” microfiltration is analyzed using blocking models. The blocking index and resistance coefficient of the models during microfiltration are calculated under various conditions. The major factors affecting these model parameters, such as the filtration rate, the amount of particles simultaneously arriving at the membrane surface and particle accumulation, are discussed thoroughly. Instead of the four different blocking models previously proposed, a membrane blocking chart is established for relating the blocking index, filtration rate, and particle accumulation. Blocking index variation during microfiltration can be interpreted using this chart. Membrane blocking occurs during the initial filtration periods until the condition reaches a critical value; then, the blocking index suddenly drops to zero by following up the cake filtration model. Once the normalized resistance coefficient is regressed to an exponential function of the blocking index under a wide range of conditions, the blocking models can be used to quantitatively explain filtration flux attenuation by solving a unitary mathematical equation. Comparing the experimental filtration rates obtained under different conditions with the simulated results reveals a good agreement between them and demonstrates the reliability of this analysis method.  相似文献

In a laboratory-scale study, characteristics of membrane fouling in an A/O (anoxic/oxic) series membrane bioreactor (MBR) and in a vertical submerged membrane bioreactor (VSMBR) treating synthetic wastewater were compared under the same operating conditions. Accordingly, fouling characteristics of a pilot-scale VSMBR treating municipal wastewater were studied under various operating conditions. Various physical, chemical, and biological factors were used to describe membrane resistances. As a result, it was concluded that high concentrations of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), high viscosity and a high sludge volume index (SVI) corresponded to high membrane resistance indicating severe membrane fouling in both the laboratory-scale MBRs and the pilot-scale VSMBR. In addition, high fouling potential was observed in the pilot-scale VSMBR at 60-day sludge retention time (SRT). In this case, as hydraulic retention time (HRT) decreased from 10 to 4 h, EPS concentrations increased and the average particle size increased, leading to reduced settling of the sludge and increased membrane fouling. To mitigate fouling, two different methods using air bubble jets were adopted in the pilot-scale VSMBR. As a result, it was found that air backwashing was more efficient for fouling mitigation than was air scouring.  相似文献

Although macromolecular fouling of microfiltration membranes is one of the critical factors governing the performance of these filtration processes, there is still little fundamental understanding of the underlying phenomena that influence the initiation, rate, and extent of fouling. We have obtained experimental data for the flux decline during the stirred cell filtration of different commercial preparations of bovine serum albumin (BSA) through asymmetric polyethersulfone microfiltration membranes. The fouling characteristics of these commercial solutions varied substantially, with the flux decline directly related to the technique utilized to initially precipitate and prepare the BSA. Prefiltration of BSA solutions prior to microfiltration substantially reduced their fouling tendency, with the degree of improvement increasing as the prefiltration was performed through smaller molecular weight cut-off membranes. The protein solutions were also characterized using gel permeation chromatography (GPC), with the fouling tendency of the different BSA preparations highly correlated with the concentration of BSA dimers and other high molecular weight species present in these BSA solutions. These results suggest that BSA fouling of these microfiltration membranes is associated with the deposition of trace quantities of aggregated and/or denatured BSA, with these fouling species serving as initiation sites for the continued deposition of bulk protein.  相似文献

Critical flux concept for microfiltration fouling   总被引:41,自引:0,他引:41
Several constant-flux filtration experiments for yeast cell suspensions, yeast cell debris, and dodecane-water emulsion were performed at various operating conditions in both flat-sheet and tubular-membrane systems. The aim of the paper is two-fold. Firstly the relationship between constant-flux behaviour and membrane fouling is discussed. In some cases constant-flux filtration was realized at a constant transmembrane pressure which was below a critical value. In general constant-flux filtration was obtained with moderately increasing transmembrane pressure, and this approach is shown to have some advantages over normal constant-pressure filtration because it clearly provides for the possibility of avoiding over-fouling and so reduces the severity of fouling. Secondly, the concept of critical flux is introduced. Whilst it has long been recognised that low-pressure microfiltration is much more effective than high-pressure microfiltration, the emphasis in this work is upon the possible existence of a critical flux and the desirability of starting filtration operations at a low flux. The critical-flux hypothesis is that on start-up there exists a flux below which a decline of flux with time does not occur. Equations which may enable identification of the appropriate flux level are included.  相似文献

A three mechanism model to describe fouling of microfiltration membranes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Mathematical modeling of flux decline during filtration plays an important role in both sizing membrane systems and in the understanding of membrane fouling. Protein fouling is traditionally modeled using one of three classical fouling mechanisms: pore blockage, pore constriction or cake filtration. Here, we have developed a mathematical model to describe flux decline behavior during microfiltration accounting for all three classical fouling mechanisms. Pore constriction was assumed to first reduce the size of internal pores. Pore blockage then occurs at the top of the membrane, preventing further fouling to the interior structure. Finally the foulants at the top of the membrane form a cake, which controls the late stages of the filtration. The model prediction shows excellent agreement with experimental data for 0.25 μm polystyrene microspheres filtered through 0.22 μm Isopore membranes (where pore constriction is expected to be minimal) as well as non-aggregated bovine serum albumin solution through hydrophobic Durapore membranes (where pore constriction is expected to dominate). The effects of different fouling mechanisms on the flux decline were characterized by the ratio of characteristic fouling times of the different mechanisms. In this way the model can provide additional insights into the relative importance of different fouling mechanisms as compared to an analysis by a single mechanism model or by derivative plots, and it can be used to provide important insights into the flux decline characteristics.  相似文献

A serious problem faced during the application of membrane filtration in water treatment is membrane fouling by natural organic matter (NOM). The hydrophilicity, zeta potential and morphology of membrane surface mainly influence membrane fouling. The aim of the present study is to reveal the correlation between membrane surface morphology and membrane fouling by use of humic acid solution and to investigate the efficiency of backwashing by water, which is applied to restore membrane flux. Cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) hollow fiber membranes were used in the present study. To obtain the membranes with various surface structures, membranes were prepared via both thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) and nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) by changing the preparation conditions such as polymer concentration, air gap distance and coagulation bath composition. Since the membrane material is the same, the effects of hydrophilicity and zeta potential on membrane fouling can be ignored. More significant flux decline was observed in the membrane with lower humic acid rejection. For the membranes with similar water permeability, the lower the porosity at the outer surface, the more serious the membrane fouling. Furthermore, the effect of the membrane morphology on backwashing performance was discussed.  相似文献

A rapid characterization method was used to study protein fouling of cellulose acetate membrane during dead-end, in-line, constant flux microfiltration. Based on pressure-permeate volume profiles, two fouling phases could be identified and compared at different permeate fluxes. Using protein staining dyes, the model foulant (bovine serum albumin) was found to deposit on the upstream side of the membrane as a loose cake at its isoelectric point. The effects of solution pH on both the nature and extent of membrane fouling, and membrane cleaning were examined. To further understand and quantitatively analyze the fouling behavior, a combined mathematical model which took into account pore blocking, cake formation and pore constriction was developed based on existing fouling models. The data obtained by modeling was in good agreement with experimental fouling data. Theoretical analysis of data clearly indicated that cake formation was the main fouling mechanism. Using methods such as dynamic light scattering, the significant role of large protein aggregates in membrane fouling was confirmed. The dimer composition of protein did not change significantly during the fouling experiments, clearly indicating that smaller aggregates played less important role in membrane fouling.  相似文献

The characteristic of aggregates pre-coagulated by inorganic monomer alum, polymer aluminium chlorohydrate(ACH) and polyaluminium chloride(PACl) coagulants impose major impact on the removal of humic acids (HAs) and the reduction of microfiltration (MF) membrane fouling. The fractal dimension of flocs formed by ACH and PACl is higher than that by monomer alum, indicating Keggin structure produced by polymer coagulants is much more compact compared with hexameric ring structure of alum hydrolysis species. Correspondingly, cake layer specific resistance is far higher and the MF membrane flux deteriorates much more severely when pre-coagulated by ACH and PACl than by alum. Moreover, the higher basicity contains in PACls, the cake layer fouling is more serious for producing more proportion of dense hydrolysis species Al13. Thus, the polymer coagulant ACH and PACl seems not adapt to the pre-coagulation–MF process for cake layer resistance increase two to three times although they save 60–70% dose in comparison with alum for HAs removal. Additionally, for three Al-based coagulants under sweep coagulation condition, insufficient dose result in lower HAs removal and produce more small particles caused higher cake layer specific resistance according to Carman–Kozeny relationship. On the other hand, coagulant hydrolysis species as direct contaminant loading aggravated cake resistance on the MF membrane when overdosed. The optimum dose should keep the minimum to provide better HAs removal efficiency, and produce lower cake layer specific resistance and higher membrane filterability for pre-coagulation–MF hybrid process.  相似文献

Fouling is the most critical problem associated with membrane separations in liquid media. But it is difficult to control the inevitable membrane fouling because of its invisibility, especially on the inside surface of hollow fiber membranes. This study describes the extension of ultrasonic time-domain reflectometry (UTDR) for the real-time measurement of particle deposition in a single hollow fiber membrane. A transducer with a frequency of 10 MHz and polyethersulfone hollow fiber membranes with 0.8 mm inside diameter (ID) and 1.2 mm outside diameter (OD) were used in this study. The fouling experiments were carried out with 1.8 g/L kaolin suspension at flow rates 16.7 and 10.0 cm/s. The results show that UTDR technique is able to distinguish and recognize the acoustic response signals generated from the interfaces water/upper outside surface of the hollow fiber, lumen upside surface/water, water/lumen underside surface and lower outside surface/water in the single hollow fiber membrane module in pure water phase. The systemic changes of acoustic responses from the inside surfaces of the hollow fiber in the time- and amplitude-domain with operation time during the fouling experiments were detected by UTDR. It is associated with the deposition and formation of the kaolin layer on the inside surfaces. Further, the acoustic measurement indicates that the deposited fouling layer is denser on the lumen underside surface of the hollow fiber than that on the lumen upside surface as a result of weight. Moreover, it is found that the fouling layer grows faster on the inside surface of the hollow fiber at a flow rate of 10.0 cm/s than that at 16.7 cm/s due to the lower shear stress. The fouling layer formed is thicker at a flow rate of 10.0 cm/s than that at 16.7 cm/s. The flux decline data and SEM analysis corroborate the ultrasonic measurement. Overall, this study confirms that UTDR measurement will provide not only a new protocol for the observation of hollow fiber membrane fouling and cleaning, but also a quantitative approach to the optimization of the membrane bioreactor system.  相似文献

Membrane foulants and gel layer formed on membrane surfaces were systematically characterized in a submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) under sub-critical flux operation. The evaluation of mean oxidation state (MOS) of organic carbons and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy demonstrated that membrane foulants in gel layer were comprised of not only extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) (proteins, polysaccharides, etc.) but also other kinds of organic substances. It was also found that fine particles in mixed liquor had a strong deposit tendency on the membrane surfaces, and membrane foulants had much smaller size than mixed liquor in the MBR by particle size distribution (PSD) analysis. Gel filtration chromatography (GFC) analysis showed that membrane foulants and soluble microbial products (SMP) had much broader distributions of molecular weight (MW) and a larger weight-average molecular weight (Mw) compared with the influent wastewater and the membrane effluent. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-diffusive X-ray (EDX) analysis indicated that membrane surfaces were covered with compact gel layer which was formed by organic substances and inorganic elements such as Mg, Al, Fe, Ca, Si, etc. The organic foulants coupled the inorganic precipitation enhanced the formation of gel layer and thus caused membrane fouling in the MBR.  相似文献

The primary aim of this paper was to develop a more effective and economical procedure for cleaning polyethylene hollow fiber microfiltration membranes that have been used for removing oil from contaminated seawater. Alkaline cleaning showed higher recovery of operating cycle time but lower permeate flux recovery than acid cleaning. The combination of both alkaline and acid cleaning agents gave the best operating cycle time and flux recoveries (e.g. 96% and 94%, respectively). As the cleaning agent soaking time was reduced, the actual operating cycle time was reduced. However, the ratio of operating time/chemical cleaning time increased as the soaking time was reduced. The soaking time was recommended to be as short as possible (8–10 h) in the design of small capacity plants and 30 h or higher in case of large capacity plants. SEM analysis showed that in case of alkaline cleaning, most of the pores remained covered with a foulant layer, resulting in low flux recovery. The SEM results of acid cleaned membranes showed more complete removal of the foulant layer from the pores resulting in better flux recovery. Surface analysis of membranes cleaned with combined acid/base agents showed the best results. A membrane surface similar to the original one was obtained. The long-term objective is to increase the understanding of membrane fouling phenomena, preventive means and membrane cleaning processes as it applies to the clean-up and desalination of oil contaminated seawater.  相似文献

In recent years, Transparent exopolymer particles(TEPs) have been identified as significant contributors to membrane surface biofouling. Reported research on the effect of TEPs on membrane fouling has mainly focused on algae-derived TEPs in the ocean, and very limited investigations have been conducted on those in freshwater systems. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of TEPs derived from Microcystis aeruginosa and their influence on membrane fouling in an ultrafiltration (UF) system. The results indicated that bound TEPs could lead to more serious membrane fouling while free TEPs caused more serious irreversible membrane fouling. Further studies showed that in free TEP solutions, small-sized colloidal TEPs (c-TEPs) rather than large-sized particle TEPs (p-TEPs) showed a significantly positive correlation with irreversible membrane fouling. The presence of Ca2+ ions in influent water can reduce membrane fouling to some extent since a low concentration of Ca2+ ions (1 mM) can lead to the transformation of most free TEPs from the colloidal to particulate state. Both acidic and alkaline environments of free TEP solutions result in more serious membrane fouling compared to a neutral environment of free TEP solution. The negative impact of the acidic environment on membrane fouling was more significant than that of the alkaline environment. The abovementioned results show that when using a UF system to filter water with high algal content, greater attention should be paid to free TEPs, especially those in the colloidal state, because they can cause serious, irreversible membrane fouling.  相似文献

Membrane fouling is the major limitation for a broader application of membrane technology. One of the main causes of membrane fouling in advanced wastewater reclamation and in membrane bioreactors (MBR) are the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Among the main constituents in EPS, polysaccharides are the most ubiquitous. This study aims at a better understanding of the fouling mechanisms of EPS and the efficiency of backwashing technique, which is applied in practice to restore membrane flux. For that purpose, the evolution of fouling by sodium alginate, a microbial polysaccharide, is studied in ultrafiltration. Fouling experiments are carried out in a single fiber apparatus, aiming at identifying the significance of distinct fouling mechanisms and their degree of reversibility by backwashing. An important parameter considered in the study is the concentration of calcium ions, which promote sodium alginate aggregation and influence the rate of flux decline, the reversibility of fouling and rejection. A rapid irreversible fouling takes place due to internal pore constriction, at the beginning of filtration, followed by cake development on the membrane surface. With increased calcium addition, cake development becomes the dominant mechanism throughout the filtration step. Furthermore, fouling reversibility is increased with the increase of calcium concentration. A unique behavior of sodium alginate solution in the absence of calcium is also noted, i.e. the formation of a labile layer on the membrane surface, which is affected by the small cross-flow that exists inside hollow fibers, even in the nominally dead-end mode of operation.  相似文献

Effects of adsorbents on membrane fouling by natural organic matter   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Fouling by natural organic matter (NOM) is a major impediment to cost-effective operation of membrane processes in water treatment. This research investigated the removal of NOM by three adsorbents: heated iron or aluminum oxide particles (HIOPs and HAOPs, respectively) and powdered activated carbon (PAC). Although PAC removed a larger fraction of the DOC than did either HAOPs or HIOPs, it adsorbed non-fouling molecules preferentially over foulants, whereas the opposite was true for the metal oxide particles. In addition, when the oxide adsorbents were pre-deposited on a microfiltration membrane, foulants that were not adsorbed in batch tests were effectively removed from the solution before it reached the membrane, leading to excellent performance with respect to both NOM removal and fouling. SEM images showed that membranes under a layer of HAOPs and HIOPs were virtually as clean as a pristine membrane.  相似文献

A mathematical model was developed to simulate filtration process and aeration influence on submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) in aerobic conditions. The biological kinetics and the dynamic effect of the sludge attachment and detachment from the membrane, in relation to the filtration and a strong intermittent aeration, were included in the model. The model was established considering soluble microbial products (SMP) formation-degradation. The fouling components responsible of pore clogging, sludge cake growth, and temporal sludge film coverage were considered during calculation of the total membrane fouling resistance. The influence of SMP, transmembrane pressure, and mixed liquor suspended solids on specific filtration resistance of the sludge cake was also included. With this model, the membrane fouling under different SMBR operational conditions can be simulated. The influence of a larger number of very important process variables on fouling development can be well quantified. The model was developed for evaluating the influence on fouling control of an intermittent aeration of bubbles synchronized or not with the filtration cycles, taking into account the effects of shear intensity on sludge cake removal.  相似文献

The algae bloom phenomenon incurs a major challenge to conventional drinking water treatment processes due to the discharges of a large amount of intracellular pollutant and odor compounds in the water sources. Membrane processes have been considered as promising technologies to treatment of algal-rich water due to complete algal cell rejection however, its application has been limited by membrane fouling. In this work, the high-performance loose antifouling PES NF membranes were fabricated using diazonium-induced grafting and applied for treating real algal effluent. The modified membranes exhibited complete algal dye removal and turbidity removal throughout the long-term filtration. Also, the coupling and radically modified membranes can be able to removed COD by up to 90% and 88%, respectively, while a removal efficiency of 24% was observed for bare membrane. It is worth noting that, a relative smooth behavior in permeate flux by loose modified membranes during prolonged algal dye filtration, demonstrating exceptional anti-fouling property of membranes. In addition, the fouled modified membranes were effectively recovered by water flushing. Both loose modified membranes exhibited excellent resistance in the strongly acidic environment. These high performance antifouling NF membranes affords an innovative methodology toward the treatment of algal-rich water.  相似文献

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) is powerful in characterizing and identifying bacterial isolates. However, sufficient quantities of bacterial cells are required for generating MALDI mass spectra and a procedure to isolate and enrich target bacteria from sample matrix prior to MALDI-MS analysis is often necessary. In this paper, anion-exchange superparamagnetic nanoparticles (NPs), i.e., fluidMAG-DEAE and fluidMAG-Q, were employed to capture Aeromonas, Salmonella, Pseudomonas, Enterococcus, Bacillus, Staphylococcus and Escherichia coli from aqueous solutions and fresh water. The magnetically isolated bacteria were then characterized by whole cell MALDI-MS. The capture efficiency was found to be dependent on bacterial species, medium pH, the functional group and concentration of the NPs. The experimental results demonstrated that fluidMAG-DEAE and fluidMAG-Q were broad spectrum probes for bacteria. Furthermore, both dead and live bacteria could be captured by the NPs, and the live bacteria captured remained viable. Membrane filtration prior to the magnetic isolation could increase enrichment factor and eliminate potential matrix interference. A detection limit of 1 × 103 cfu/ml was achieved for the bacteria spiked in tap water and reservoir water, and the analytical time was around 2 h.  相似文献

Mitigated membrane fouling in an SMBR by surface modification   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fouling is a major obstacle in membrane processes applied in membrane bioreactor. To improve the antifouling characteristics of polypropylene hollow fiber microporous membranes (PPHFMMs) in a submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR), the PPHFMMs were surface modified by NH3, CO2 plasma treatment, photoinduced graft polymerization of acrylamide and acrylic acid. The structural and morphological changes on the membrane surface were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR/ATR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The change of surface wettability was monitored by contact angle measurements. The results of XPS and FT-IR/ATR clearly indicated the successful modification on the membrane surface. The static water contact angle of the modified membrane reduced obviously. The antifouling characteristics of the modified membranes in an SMBR were evaluated. The modified membranes showed better filtration performances in the submerged membrane bioreactor than the unmodified one, and the acrylic acid-grafted membrane presented the best antifouling characteristics. The results demonstrated that (1) the surface carboxyl-containing membranes were better than the surface amido-containing membranes; (2) surface-grafted membranes were better than the plasma-treated membranes.  相似文献

A new method for non-invasive in situ monitoring of a microfiltration process is described. In microfiltration systems, local information on the deposition characteristics can be used to determine the cake behavior during a filtration run. Typically, non-invasive methods of fouling study are restricted to specialized membranes, or require highly complex systems. This study employs the use of synthetic embedded channel membranes, with channels separated by a porous structure (active membrane). The characteristics of the active membrane have been analyzed. Deposition on the membrane surface can be observed and monitored optically across the width of the feed channel. This can be used to observe the liquid hydrodynamics in the channel as well as the local cake properties in time. In dead end filtration, it has been observed that with 6 μm particles, the cake initially deposits towards the end of the membrane. However, as filtration continues, the deposition changes with more local deposition towards the channel entrance, leading to a more homogeneous cake layer.  相似文献
