LetR be an associative ring with identity which satisfies the identities(xy) k =(yx) k and(xy) l =(yx) l , wherek andl are relatively prime positive integers, depending onx andy. ThenR is commutative. Moreover, examples are given which show thatR need not be commutative if either of the above identities is dropped. This theorem is also true for groups. Presented by N. S. Mendelsohn.  相似文献

Partial solutions are obtained to Halmos’ problem, whether or not any polynomially bounded operator on a Hilbert spaceH is similar to a contraction. Central use is made of Paulsen’s necessary and sufficient condition, which permits one to obtain bounds on ‖S‖ ‖S ?1‖, whereS is the similarity. A natural example of a polynomially bounded operator appears in the theory of Hankel matrices, defining $$R_f = \left( {\begin{array}{*{20}c} {S*} \\ 0 \\ \end{array} \begin{array}{*{20}c} {\Gamma _f } \\ S \\ \end{array} } \right)$$ onl 2l 2, whereS is the shift and Γ f the Hankel operator determined byf withf′ ∈ BMOA. Using Paulsen’s condition, we prove thatR f is similar to a contraction. In the general case, combining Grothendieck’s theorem and techniques from complex function theory, we are able to get in the finite dimensional case the estimate $$\left\| S \right\|\left\| {S^{ - 1} } \right\| \leqq M^4 log(dim H)$$ whereSTS ?1 is a contraction and assuming \(\left\| {p\left( T \right)} \right\| \leqq M\left\| p \right\|_\infty \) wheneverp is an analytic polynomial on the disc.  相似文献

For a class of closed symmetric operators with defect numbers it is possible to define a generalization of the Friedrichs extension, which coincides with the usual Friedrichs extension when is semibounded. In this paper we provide an operator-theoretic interpretation of this class of symmetric operators. Moreover, we prove that a selfadjoint operator is semibounded if and only if each one-dimensional restriction of has a generalized Friedrichs extension.

A celebrated theorem of Coburn asserts that, on the setting of the Hardy space, if a Toeplitz operator is nonzero, then either it is one-to-one or its adjoint operator is one-to-one. In this paper, we show that an analogous result holds for Toeplitz operators acting on the Dirichlet space.  相似文献

After the von Neumann's remark [10] about pathologies of unbounded symmetric operators and an abstract theorem about stability domain [9], we develope here a general theory allowing to construct semibounded restrictions of selfadjoint operators in explicit form. We apply this theory to quantum-mechanical momentum (position) operator to describe corresponding stability domains. Generalization to the case of measurable functions of these operators is considered. In conclusion we discuss spectral properties of self-adjoint extensions of constructed self-adjoint restrictions.  相似文献

We study the Grushin operators acting on \(\mathbb{R}_x^{{d_1}} \times \mathbb{R}_t^{{d_2}}\) and defined by the formula \(L = - \sum\nolimits_{j = 1}^{{d_1}} {\partial _{{x_j}}^2} - {\sum\nolimits_{j = 1}^{{d_1}} {\left| {{x_j}} \right|} ^2}\sum\nolimits_{k = 1}^{{d_2}} {\partial _{{t_k}}^2} \). We establish a restriction theorem associated with the considered operators. Our result is an analogue of the restriction theorem on the Heisenberg group obtained by D. M¨uller [Ann. of Math., 1990, 131: 567–587].  相似文献

A general bifurcation theorem for potential operators is proved. It describes the possible behavior of the set of solutions of an operator equation as a function of the eigenvalue parameter in a neighborhood of the bifurcation point. The theorem applies in particular to buckling problems in elasticity theory as well as to other fields in which the bifurcation problems have a variational formulation.  相似文献

Rank one perturbations of selfadjoint operators which are not necessarily semibounded are studied in the present paper. It is proven that such perturbations are uniquely defined, if they are bounded in the sense of forms. We also show that form unbounded rank one perturbations can be uniquely defined if the original operator and the perturbation are homogeneous with respect to a certain one parameter semigroup. The perturbed operator is defined using the extension theory for symmetric operators. The resolvent of the perturbed operator is calculated using Krein's formula. It is proven that every rank one perturbation can be approximated in the operator norm. We prove that some form unbounded perturbations can be approximated in the strong resolvent sense without renormalization of the coupling constant only if the original operator is not semibounded. The present approach is applied to study first derivative and Dirac operators with point interaction, in one dimension.  相似文献
