We present first-principles calculations of the nonlinear optical (NLO) response of a Ni/Cu(001) bilayer. The calculations are based on the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method with the additional implementation of spin–orbit coupling (SOC). On the basis of this set of eigenstates the magneto-optical transition-matrix elements are evaluated. Using the surface-sheet model the optical reflection properties are determined for the cases of the magnetization vector perpendicular to the surface (polar magneto-optical configuration (MOC)) and for the in-plane magnetization (longitudinal MOC). The nonlinear optical susceptibility tensor elements χ(2) ijk for different magnetization directions as well as the spectral dependence of χ(2) ijk, the resulting intensities, and Kerr angles are presented for the Ni/Cu(001) bilayer. The results show that the magnetic tensor elements of the χ(2) ijk tensor are smaller than the nonmagnetic ones by only one order of magnitude, confirming the important role of magnetic properties in the NLO response. Magneto-optic (MO) effects in magnetic multilayers with periodic regions are discussed assuming normal incidence of polarized waves and polar magnetization (Faraday and polar Kerr effects). From the (4 × 4)-matrix formalism simplified analytical expressions linear in the off-diagonal permittivity tensor element are obtained with no loss in accuracy. The MO effects are expressed as weighted sums of contributions from individual layers. Approximate expressions are given for the case when the thickness of magnetic layers is much smaller than the radiation wavelength. The procedure is illustrated on superlattices consisting of symmetric sandwiches of ultrathin magnetic and non-magnetic metallic layers. The magnetization of 10-nm Gd films on W (110) has been investigated with second-harmonic generation (SHG). We observed a strong second-harmonic (SH) yield, which we attribute to resonance enhancement by the well-known Gd (0001) d-like surface state above the Fermi level. Since this state is spin-polarized it enhances the magnetic SHG contrast. The contrast, the relative phase between odd and even SH fields, and the amplitude ratio of these fields depend strongly on wavelength, which confirms the resonance enhancement. Further proof is provided by the fact that oxidation of the Gd surface reduces the SH yield by an order of magnitude. Nonlinear (at the second-harmonic frequency of the incident light) optical reflection by two-dimensional magnetic superstructures is theoretically studied. A square lattice of magnetic dots and a hexagonal lattice of magnetic bubbles (cylindrical magnetic domains) are considered. Because the periods of these structures are comparable with the wavelengths of the fundamental and the second-harmonic radiation, it would be possible to observe diffraction at the second-harmonic frequency. A polarization analysis of nonlinearly diffracted radiation is performed and the numbers of observable diffraction orders for the above structures are estimated. Second-harmonic generation (SHG) results for Ni and Co films on Cu (001) have been reinvestigated regarding the depth sensitivity of this technique for thin films. We find that tangential components of the nonlinear susceptibility are much more sensitive to real film properties than normal components, which are confined to surfaces and interfaces. In consequence, for SHG experiments on ultra-thin metal films, polarization combinations should be favored that possess only tangential susceptibility components, even though the yield is weaker. We present a model of spin transport in a Co/Cu(1 1 1)/Co pseudo-spin-valve (PSV) structure where current is flowing in the current perpendicular-to-plane (CPP) geometry. The model considers ballistic spin-dependent transmission at the two Co–Cu interfaces, as well as diffusive spin relaxation within the Cu spacer and free Co layer. In the latter, the spin relaxation process is composed of the usual longitudinal spin relaxation due to spin flip scattering, as well as transverse spin relaxation due to spin precession. The resulting spin transfer torque exerted on the moments within the free Co layer is composed of two contributions, the main contribution coming from “absorbed” spins in the interfacial regions. The second contribution arises from the relaxation of spin accumulation within the free Co layer. The calculated critical current density for switching is estimated to be approximately between 3.3×107 and 1.1×108 A/cm2, which is in agreement with available experimental results.  相似文献

Spin injection across ferromagnet/organic semiconductor system with finite width of the layers was studied theoretically considering spin-dependent conductivity in the organic-semiconductor. It was found that the spin injection efficiency is directly dependent on the difference between the conductivity of the up-spin and down-spin polarons in the spin-injected organic system. Furthermore, the finite width of the structure, interfacial electrochemical-potential and conductivity mismatch have great influence on the spin injection process across ferromagnet/organic semiconductor interface.  相似文献

We use the two-component drift-diffusion model to study the spin density polarization in an organic semiconductor system under an external electric-field. The spin-dependent electrical-conductivity, the drift spin current and the diffusion spin current in the organic semiconductor are self-consistently derived. It is found that the spin current could be strongly influenced by the spin-dependent electrical-conductivity. When the spin-dependent conductivity varies from 0 to 0.5%, the spin current presents a very pronounced change almost three orders in magnitude. The electric-field could effectively enhance the spin-dependent electrical-conductivity and the spin current. Furthermore, the spin-dependent electrical-conductivity is position sensitive, but its position sensitivity goes down while electric-field is larger than about 1 mV/μm.  相似文献

The competition of superconductivity and magnetism in superlattices composed of alternating YBa2Cu3O7−d and La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 thin films is investigated using low-energy optical spectroscopy. The thickness of the superconducting YBCO layers is varied from 30 to 20 nm while the thickness of the magnetic LCMO layers is kept constant at 20 nm. We clearly observe that the superconducting condensate density in the superconducting state of super lattice is drastically reduced by the magnetic subsystem which may be connected with proximity effects that distort the gap symmetry and thus suppress superconductivity.  相似文献

Some exact identities connecting one- and two-particle Green's functions in the presence of spin–orbit coupling have been derived. These identities are similar to the Ward identity in usual quantum transport theory of electrons. A satisfying approximate calculation of the spin transport in spin–orbit coupling system should also preserve these identities, just as the Ward identities should be remained in the usual electronic transport theory.  相似文献

Optical transitions in normal-spinel Co3O4 have been identified by investigating the variation of its optical absorption spectrum with the replacement of Co by Zn. Three optical-transition structures were located at about 1.65, 2.4, and 2.8 eV from the measured dielectric function of Co3O4 by spectroscopic ellipsometry. The variation of the absorption structures with the Zn substitution (ZnxCo3−xO4) can be explained in terms of charge-transfer transitions involving d states of Co ions. The 1.65 eV structure is assigned to a d-d charge-transfer transition between the t2g states of octahedral Co3+ ion and t2 states of tetrahedral Co2+ ion, t2g(Co3+)→t2(Co2+). The 2.4 and 2.8 eV structures are interpreted as due to charge-transfer transitions involving the p states of O2− ion: p(O2−)→t2(Co2+) for the 2.4 eV absorption and p(O2−)→eg(Co3+) for the 2.8 eV absorption. The observed gradual reduction of the 1.65 and 2.4 eV absorption strength with the increase of the Zn composition for ZnxCo3−xO4 can be explained in terms of the substitution of the tetrahedral Co2+ sites by Zn2+ ions. The crystal-field splitting ΔOh between the eg and the t2g states of the octahedral Co3+ ion is estimated to be 2 eV.  相似文献

Magnetic properties of the Co/Ag/Ge(1 0 0) films grown at room temperature and 200 K were studied by the surface magneto-optical Kerr effect (SMOKE). More than 1.5 monolayer Ag buffer layers not only effectively block the interdiffusion between the capped Co layers and the Ge(1 0 0) substrate but also stabilize the magnetic phase. The temperature and thickness dependence on coercivity measurements show that interactions upon the interfaces are strongly correlated to the microstructures.  相似文献

The light transmittance of metal film with periodic slits and grooves structure has been investigated. It was demonstrated that the grooves significantly affect the transmittance of the metal film. The structure excavating two grooves symmetric to the central slit in a cell of a period grating displays a dent in the transmission spectrum comparing with the structure with only one slit in the cell. Deepening the grooves moves the dents to the longer wavelengths in the transmission spectrum. An analytical equation is also provided to approximately locate the dents. The grooves in the grating filter supply the advantage of removing the needless transmission of certain frequency.  相似文献

The optical reflectance by a metallic plate arranged with array consisting of subwavelength periodic square hole is investigated by using the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method (3D-FDTD). There are dips in the reflectivity spectra, which indicate the absorption peaks. The absorption peaks behave differently according to the ratio of hole width and the period of the hole array. Combined with the near fields of the absorption peaks, it is found that the surface plasmon (SP) resonance on the surface of plate and localized SP in the hole play a major role for the two absorptions.  相似文献

A method for direct optical measurements of the electron spin polarization vector in semiconductors under transverse magnetic field is proposed. It is based on the time-resolved Kerr rotation experiments and provides picosecond resolution on the time-scale of several nanoseconds. We propose to achieve spin injection in an organic device by a spin polarized self-assembled monolayer (SPSAM), which is used to tune the spin-dependent coupling between electrode and organic polymer. The results show that spin injection can be realized by both the spin selection and spin manipulation effects of the SPSAM. Interestingly, we found spin polarized wave-packet as a consequence of the spin injection, which is a mix of a normal spin polaron and a spinless bipolaron.  相似文献

Diamond-like carbon films containing Ag and Cu in nanocrystalline form were deposited onto SnO2-coated glass substrates by electrochemical technique. Relative amount of silver and copper to be incorporated in the DLC matrix was tailored by varying the amount of silver and copper containing salts in the electrolyte. Current density was adjusted to obtain films with different crystallite size while the volume fraction of the metal nanocrystallites was altered by varying the dilution of the solution containing the salts. Raman studies indicated the presence of two peaks located at ∼1350 cm−1 (D-line) and 1566 cm−1 (G-line) for all the films and the relative intensities of these peaks changed with the amount of metal incorporation in it. The FTIR spectra were seen to be dominated by a peak at 975 cm−1 for C-H out of plane deformation modes along with peaks for C-H bending, C-H stretching and C-C stretching modes at 858, 1113 and 1189 cm−1, respectively. The optical absorption spectra showed a single plasmon band instead of two characteristic bands for Ag and Cu. We ascribe this to nanophase limited interfacial alloying at the Ag-Cu interface. The experimental observation was analyzed in the light of Mie theory.  相似文献

This paper deals with the optimization of the factor of merit of the magneto-optical Kerr effect of a resonant multilayer cavity including a ferromagnetic film. This optimization is of interest in the context of optical storage technology. Using numerical simulations based on the Green's dyadic technique, we discuss a route to obtain magneto-optical multilayers with a vanishing ellipticity and factors of merit (with respect to the bulk magnetic material) larger than 3 on a broad range of wavelengths, significantly higher than the actual state of the art. Photothermal Deflection Spectroscopy (PDS) is known to be one of the most sensitive techniques for measuring the absorption of weakly absorbing materials. We have applied PDS for measuring the optical absorption of a few polymer thin-film samples over the wavelength region from 0.4–2.0 m.
