Writing conditions for the fabrication of optical waveguides in bulk fused silica glass by use of 1 kHz focused femtosecond laser pulses at 800 nm were systematically determined for different focusing geometries. The results demonstrate that waveguides can be formed based on optical breakdown, filamentation (single or multiple), or a combination of both processes, when using pulse energies lower than the threshold of structural damage. The mechanisms of laser-induced index change are also discussed. PACS 42.65.Jx; 42.70.Ce; 42.79.Gn 相似文献

By focusing fs-laser radiation in the volume of a transparent material the refractive index can be changed locally, leading to 3-dimensional waveguiding structures. Waveguides are written in phosphate glass (IOG from Schott) at a depth of 100 μm below the surface. The pulse energy and the scan velocity are varied. For the first time the optical path difference caused by the waveguides and therefore the refractive index distribution of the waveguides and their cross sections are determined using interference microscopy. The optical path difference measured in the written structures and their cross sections is analyzed by a phase-shift algorithm. Thus, the refractive index distribution both along a line perpendicular to the waveguide and in the plane of a cross section is determined. The results are visualized as 2-dimensional graphics. Several regions of opposite sign of the refractive index change are observed in the cross sections of waveguides generated by femtosecond laser pulses. The number and the size of these regions are increasing with increasing pulse energy and decreasing scan velocity. 相似文献

The influence of thermal effects in gain measurements of fs laser-written waveguides in actively doped glass is reported for
the first time. We show that these effects strongly contribute to the signal enhancement (up to 50% observed). Thus, a new
measurement scheme to distinguish between thermal induced signal increase and real amplification is proposed.

Low-loss waveguides written with a femtosecond laser for flexible interconnection in a planar light-wave circuit 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We describe a low-loss single-mode waveguide in planar light-wave circuit (PLC) glass doped with boron and phosphorus, which is more difficult to write than pure-silica glass. The written waveguide has a rectangular core, a symmetric near-field pattern, and a propagation loss of 0.35 dB/cm. The loss that originates from the mode-field mismatch between the mode-field diameters of the written and the PLC waveguides is less than 0.1 dB/point. In addition, we successfully connected PLC waveguides with a 500-microm-long waveguide written with a laser. The laser-written waveguide can flexibly connect PLC waveguides with a low coupling loss. 相似文献

Fabrication of microfluidic optical waveguides on glass chips with femtosecond laser pulses 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We describe the fabrication of microfluidic channel structures on the surface of a borosilicate glass slide by femtosecond laser direct writing for optical waveguide application. Liquid with a variable refractive index is fed into the microchannel, serving as the core of the waveguide. We demonstrate that either a multimode or a single-mode waveguide can be achieved by controlling the refractive index of the liquid. 相似文献

Fabrication of multimode interference waveguides in glass by use of a femtosecond laser 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We report on the fabrication of multimode interference (MMI) waveguides that split single-mode light into multimode light in synthesized silica by use of femtosecond laser pulses. The number of modes at the output facet is dependent on both the width and the length of the MMI waveguides. The output spectral responses of the MMI waveguides in the visible region were examined. The fabricated MMI waveguides can be used as compact power splitters with large fan-outs. 相似文献

We investigated the femtosecond laser writing of optical waveguides inside Foturan glass at various pulse energies and focusing
depths. An optimal waveguide fabricated solely by femtosecond laser irradiation showed a refractive index modulation of ∼1.7×10-3 and a minimum transmission loss of ∼0.80 dB/cm. This type of waveguide had lower transmission loss than those fabricated
by a hybrid process of femtosecond laser exposure and following thermal treatment. An optical splitter was also fabricated
at high pulse energy.

Fabrication and analysis of a directional coupler written in glass by nanojoule femtosecond laser pulses 总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
A directional coupler written in a glass sample by the focused 400-nm output from a 25-fs oscillator is reported. The coupler is single mode; the splitting ratio is 1.9 dB at 633 nm. A refractive-index profile of the waveguide with a magnitude of Dn = 4.5 x 10(-3) was retrieved from a near-field mode pattern. 相似文献

Writing low-loss waveguides in borosilicate (BK7) glass with a low-repetition-rate femtosecond laser 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Borosilicate glass (BK7) is a widely-used material in integrated optics devices and in the optical communications industry. We report on laser-written waveguiding in BK7 glass using a low-repetition-rate (1 kHz) laser producing 40 fs pulses of 800 nm light. A 500 μm slit is used to write structures 100 μm below the glass surface. These waveguides show strong guidance at 635 nm, with an index contrast of 3 × 10− 4 and a propagation loss of ~ 0.5 dB/cm. We measured the change in refractive index for a range of writing conditions as quantified in terms of energy dose; there is an energy dose window (> 0.6 μJ μm− 3 and < 1.5 μJ μm− 3) within which the written structures show guidance. 相似文献

In this work, we present an optical characterization of channel waveguides fabricated by means of femtosecond laser writing on Nd:YAG substrates. These guiding structures show a refractive index increment of about 1×10?3 which allows TE propagation. By pumping with a CW solid-state laser at 532 nm reaching the 2G9/2 and 4G7/2 manifolds of Nd3+ ions, we have explored the emission band corresponding to 4F3/2→4I9/2 optical transitions (peaked at 890 nm). From data, we have found that emission showed similar characteristics for waveguide and bulk. On the other hand, the lifetime corresponding to the 4F3/2 metaestable level was determined to be 240 μs for bulk and waveguide. Summarizing, we have made suitable channel waveguides in Nd:YAG crystals, by fs interaction, with similar spectroscopic properties to those of the bulk, a fact that boosters the photonics application of these devices. For the first time to our knowledge, a direct index increment waveguide made by interaction with ultra-short intense pulses in YAG crystals has been performed. This fabrication procedure can be an efficient tool to make several optical circuits in active materials by means of the one-step, fast and low-cost processing. 相似文献

Optical seizing and merging of voids in silica glass with infrared femtosecond laser pulses 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We demonstrate that one can seize and translate voids formed by IR femtosecond laser pulses inside silica glass and can also cause two voids to merge into one. We also present clear evidence of a void and its surrounding region by showing scanning electron microscope images of cleaved voids, which we produced by cleaving through the glass along a plane that included a thin laser-ablated line on the surface of the glass and the voids formed inside. 相似文献

We demonstrate an improved method for fabricating optical waveguides in bulk materials by means of femtosecond laser writing. We use an LC spatial light modulator (SLM) to shape the beam focus by generating adaptive slit illumination in the pupil of the objective lens. A diffraction grating is applied in a strip across the SLM to simulate a slit, with the first diffracted order mapped onto the pupil plane of the objective lens while the zeroth order is blocked. This technique enables real-time control of the beam-shaping parameters during writing, facilitating the fabrication of more complicated structures than is possible using nonadaptive methods. Waveguides are demonstrated in fused silica with a coupling loss to single-mode fibers in the range of 0.2 to 0.5 dB and propagation loss <0.4 dB/cm. 相似文献

We report on the fabrication of optical Bragg type phase gratings in polymethyl methacrylate substrates by a femptosecond Ti: Sapphire laser. As for their optical characterization, a spatially resolved microscopy interferometric technique is used to investigate the two-dimensional distribution of the refractive index change produced by the irradiation process. The technique gives a direct and quantitative two-dimensional profile of the index of refraction in irradiated PMMA, providing information on how the fabrication process depends on the laser irradiation. 相似文献

The effect that femtosecond laser filamentation has on the refractive index of Nd:YAG ceramics, and which leads to the formation
of waveguide lasers, has been studied by micro-spectroscopy imaging, beam propagation experiments and calculations. From the
analysis of the Nd3+ luminescence and Raman images, two main types of laser induced modifications have been found to contribute to the refractive-index
change: (i) a lattice defect contribution localized along the self-focusing volume of the laser pulses, in which lattice damage
causes a refractive-index decrease, and (ii) a lattice strain-field contribution around and inside the filaments, in which
the pressure-driven variation of the inter-atomic distances causes refractive-index variations. Scanning near-field optical-transmission
and end-coupling experiments, in combination with beam propagation calculations, have been used to quantitatively determine
the corresponding contribution of each effect to the refractive-index field of double-filament waveguides. Results indicate
that the strain-field induced refractive-index increment is the main mechanism leading to waveguiding, whereas the damage-induced
refractive-index reduction at filaments leads to a stronger mode confinement. 相似文献

This Letter reports on the fabrication of low-loss waveguides in gallium-lanthanum-sulfide chalcogenide glasses using an ultrafast laser. Spatial beam shaping and temporal pulse width tuning were used to optimize the guided mode profiles and optical loss of laser-written waveguides. Highly symmetric single-mode waveguides guiding at 1560 nm with a loss of 0.65 dB/cm were fabricated using 1.5 ps laser pulses. This Letter suggests a pathway to produce high quality optical waveguides in substrates with strong nonlinearity using the ultrafast laser direct writing technique. 相似文献

Microfluidic laser embedded in glass by three-dimensional femtosecond laser microprocessing 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Microfluidic dye lasers three-dimensionally embedded in glass have been fabricated for what is believed to be the first time by integrating micro-optical and microfluidic components by use of a femtosecond laser. By pumping the microfluidic laser, in which the microfluidic chamber was filled with the laser dye Rhodamine 6G dissolved in ethanol, with a frequency-doubled Nd:yttrium aluminum garnet laser, lasing action was confirmed by analysis of the emission spectra at different pump powers. In addition, by arranging two microfluidic chambers serially in the glass, we built a microfluidic twin laser that produces an array of two simultaneous laser emissions with one pump laser. 相似文献

In the present work, we have analyzed the use of elliptical beam shaping along with low numerical aperture focusing optics in order to produce circular cross-section waveguides in different materials at large processing depths by direct femtosecond laser writing (100 fs, 800 nm, 1 kHz). A variable slit located before the focusing optics allows to generate a nearly elliptical beam shape and also to reduce the effective numerical aperture of the beam along the shat axis of the ellipse. The focusing optics allows to focus the beam deep inside the sample, which is translated at a constant speed transversely to the writing beam direction. The influence of several experimental parameters (energy per pulse, slit width, processing depth) on the properties of the produced waveguides has been analyzed. The influence of the intrinsic properties of the material (refractive index, composition) has been analyzed by comparing results obtained in fused silica and Er:Yb co-doped phosphate glass. The results obtained show that this approach leads to the successful production of deep subsurface (up to 7 mm) waveguides with circular cross-sections. Preliminary results using chirped pulses in the phosphate glass suggest that temporal pulse shaping can be used as an additional parameter to optimize the guided mode symmetry. 相似文献
