In this paper, we deal with some corresponding relations between knots and polynomials by using the basic properties of knot polynomials (such as, some special values of knot polynomials, the Arf invariant and derivative of knot polynomials). We give necessary and sufficient conditions that a Laurent polynomial with integer coefficients, whose breadth is less than five, is the Jones polynomial of a certain knot.  相似文献

We give examples of non-fibered hyperbolic knot complements in homology spheres that are not commensurable to fibered knot complements in homology spheres. In fact, we give many examples of knot complements in homology spheres where every commensurable knot complement in a homology sphere has non-monic Alexander polynomial.

Tristram and Levine introduced a continuous family of signature invariants for knots. We show that any possible value of such an invariant is realized by a knot with given Vassiliev invariants of bounded degree. We also show that one can make a knot prime preserving Alexander polynomial and Vassiliev invariants of bounded degree. Finally, the Tristram-Levine signatures are applied to obtain a condition on (signed) unknotting number.  相似文献

Recently S. Chmutov introduced a generalization of the dual of a ribbon graph (or equivalently an embedded graph) and proved a relation between Bollobás and Riordan’s ribbon graph polynomial of a ribbon graph and of its generalized duals. Here I show that the duality relation satisfied by the ribbon graph polynomial can be understood in terms of knot theory and I give a simple proof of the relation which used the homfly polynomial of a knot.  相似文献

We show that the upper bound of the maximal Thurston-Bennequin number for an oriented alternating link given by the Kauffman polynomial is sharp. As an application, we confirm a question of Ferrand. We also give a formula of the maximal Thurston-Bennequin number for all two-bridge links. Finally, we introduce knot concordance invariants derived from the Thurston-Bennequin number and the Maslov number of a Legendrian knot.  相似文献

We define a notion of complexity for labeled oriented trees (LOTs) related to the bridge number in knot theory and prove that LOTs of complexity 2 are aspherical. We also present a class of LOTs of higher complexity which is aspherical, give an upper bound for the complexity of labeled oriented intervals and study the complexity of torus knots.  相似文献

Let be a compact hypersurface with constant mean curvature immersed into the unit Euclidean sphere . In this paper we derive a sharp upper bound for the first eigenvalue of the stability operator of in terms of the mean curvature and the length of the total umbilicity tensor of the hypersurface. Moreover, we prove that this bound is achieved only for the so-called -tori in , with . This extends to the case of constant mean curvature hypersurfaces previous results given by Wu (1993) and Perdomo (2002) for minimal hypersurfaces.

We use Heegaard Floer homology to give obstructions to unknotting a knot with a single crossing change. These restrictions are particularly useful in the case where the knot in question is alternating. As an example, we use them to classify all knots with crossing number less than or equal to nine and unknotting number equal to one. We also classify alternating knots with 10 crossings and unknotting number equal to one.  相似文献

We consider the following problem from the Kirby's list (Problem 3.25): Let K be a knot in and M(K) its 2-fold branched covering space. Describe the equivalence class [K] of K in the set of knots under the equivalence relation if is homeomorphic to . It is known that there exist arbitrarily many different hyperbolic knots with the same 2-fold branched coverings, due to mutation along Conway spheres. Thus the most basic class of knots to investigate are knots which do not admit Conway spheres. In this paper we solve the above problem for knots which do not admit Conway spheres, in the following sense: we give upper bounds for the number of knots in the equivalence class [K] of a knot K and we describe how the different knots in the equivalence class of K are related. The writhing number measures the global geometry of a closed space curve or knot. We show that this measure is related to the average winding number of its Gauss map. Using this relationship, we give an algorithm for computing the writhing number for a polygonal knot with n edges in time roughly proportional to n1.6. We also implement a different, simple algorithm and provide experimental evidence for its practical efficiency.  相似文献

We define 2-decompositions of ribbon graphs, which generalize 2-sums and tensor products of graphs. We give formulae for the Bollobás-Riordan polynomial of such a 2-decomposition, and derive the classical Brylawski formula for the Tutte polynomial of a tensor product as a (very) special case. This study was initially motivated from knot theory, and we include an application of our formulae to mutation in knot diagrams.  相似文献

We show that every unframed knot type in has a representative obtained by the Legendrian lifting of an immersed plane curve. This gives a positive answer to the question asked by V.I.Arnold in [3]. The Legendrian lifting lowers the framed version of the HOMFLY polynomial [20] to generic plane curves. We prove that the induced polynomial invariant can be completely defined in terms of plane curves only. Moreover it is a genuine, not Laurent, polynomial in the framing variable.
