Vibration characteristics of fluid-filled multi-walled carbon nanotubes axe studied by using nonlocal elastic Fliigge shell model. Vibration governing equations of an N-layer carbon nanotube are formulated by considering the scale effect. In the numerical simulations, the effects of different theories, small-scale, variation of wavenumber, the innermost radius and length of double- walled and triple-walled carbon nanotubes are considered. Vibrational frequencies decrease with an increase of scale coefficient, the innermost radius, length of nanotube and effects of wall number are negligible. The results show that the cut-off frequencies can be influenced by the wall number of nanotubes.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate both pre- and post-buckling behaviors of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and multi-walled carbon nanopeapods by incorporating into the applied forces of a prescribed beam equation both van der Waals interactions between the adjacent walls of the nanotubes and the interactions between the fullerenes and the inner wall of the nanotube. Two beam theories are employed. First, we utilize Donnell’s equilibrium equation to derive an axial stability condition for the multi-walled carbon nanotubes and multi-walled carbon nanopeapods. We then determine analytically the critical forces for single-walled and double-walled nanotubes and nanopeapods. Given the outer nanotube of a fixed radius, we observe that the critical force and strain derived from the axial buckling stability criterion decrease as a result of the molecular interactions between the adjacent layers of the nanotubes and the molecular interactions between the embedded fullerenes and the inner carbon nanotube, which is in agreement with existing literature. Next, we utilize an Euler–Bernoulli beam equation incorporating the curvature effect to obtain the post-buckled axial bending displacement for the multi-walled nanotubes and nanopeapods. We find that the interactions between molecules generate an inward force, which tends to resist any applied forces. While the inward force induced by the fullerenes to the inner wall of the nanotube vanishes as we increase the applied force, the inward force induced by the layers increases as the applied force increases. The main contribution of this paper is the incorporation of both van der Waals interactions and the curvature effect into prescribed beam theories to accurately measure the critical forces and the buckled displacements of multi-walled nanotubes and nanopeapods subject to a small external force. Our analysis is relevant to future nano devices, such as biological sensors and measuring devices for small forces arising from electrical charges or Casimir forces.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of an investigation on combined torsional buckling of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) under combined torque, axial loading and radial pressures based on the continuum mechanics model, which takes into account the effect of the van der Waals interaction between adjacent tubes. A buckling condition is derived for determining the critical buckling torque and associated buckling mode. In particular, for combined torsional buckling of double-walled carbon nanotubes, an explicit expression is obtained and some detailed results are demonstrated. According to the innermost radius-to-thickness ratio, MWNTs are classified into three types: thin, thick, and (almost) solid. Numerical results are worked out for the critical buckling torque and associated buckling mode for all the three types of MWNTs subjected to various axial stresses (axial tensile stresses or axial compressive stresses), internal pressures, and external pressures. It is shown that, the axial tensile stress or the internal pressure will make the MWNTs resist higher critical buckling torque, while the axial compressive stress or external pressure will lead to a lower critical buckling torque. The effect of axial stress (axial tensile stress or axial compressive stress) on the critical buckling torque of MWNTs is very small for all the three types of MWNTs, while the effect of the internal pressure or external pressure is related to the types of MWNTs, which is strong for the thin MWNTs, moderate for the thick MWNTs, and small for the solid MWNTs. Numerical results also indicate that, the associated buckling mode is unique and dependent on the structure of MWNTs. Especially, for combined torsional buckling of MWNTs with very small axial stress and radial pressures, the buckling mode is just the one for the corresponding pure torsional buckling.  相似文献

This paper models van der Waals (vdW) force for axially compressed multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), whereby each tube is treated as a cylindrical shell continuum. Explicit formulas are derived for predicting the critical axial strain of a triple-walled CNT using a more refined vdW model. The analysis of a cylindrical shell continuum model of multi-walled CNTs using this refined vdW force model is carried out to study the influence of the effect of vdW interaction between different layers of a CNT and the size effect of a CNT on the vdW interaction. It is shown herein that the greatest contribution to the vdW interaction comes from the adjacent layers and the contribution from a remote layer may be neglected. The vdW interaction is found to be strongly dependent on the radius of the tube, especially when the radius is small enough (<7 nm). When the radius is large enough (>40 nm), the vdW interaction coefficient cij can be taken as a constant value (i.e. independent of radius). However, these constant values are different for the vdW interaction between two different layers of a multi-walled CNT. The effect of the vdW interaction on the critical axial strain of a triple-walled CNT for the cases of before and after buckling is also examined for various innermost radii.  相似文献

The paper presents an analytical method to investigate thermal effects on interfacial stress transfer characteristics of single/multi-walled carbon nanotubes/polymer composites system under thermal loading by means of thermoelastic theory and conventional fiber pullout models. In example calculations, the mechanical properties and the thermal expansion coefficients of carbon nanotubes and polymer matrix are, respectively, treated as the functions of temperature change. Numerical examples show that the interfacial shear stress transfer behavior can be described and affected by several parameters such as the temperature field, volume fraction of CNT, and numbers of wall layer and the outermost radius of carbon nanotubes. From the results carried out it is found that mismatch of thermal expansion coefficients between the carbon nanotubes and polymer matrix may be more important in governing interfacial stress transfer characteristics of carbon nanotubes/polymer composite system.  相似文献

An elastic double-shell model based on continuum mechanics is presented to study the dynamic torsional buckling of an embedded double-walled carbon nanotube. Based on the presented model, a condition is derived to predict the buckling load of the embedded double-walled nanotube, and the effect of the van der Waals forces to the buckling load is discussed when an inner nanotube is inserted into an embedded outer one. In particular, the paper shows that the buckling load of the embedded double-walled nanotube is always between that of the isolated inner nanotube and that of the embedded outer nanotube for both dynamic and static torsional buckling, due to the effect of the van der Waals forces. This result is different from that obtained by the existing analysis neglecting the difference of the radii for the embedded double-walled nanotube, which indicates that disregarding the difference of the radii of multi-walled nanotubes cannot properly describe the effect of the van der Waals forces between interlayer spacing. In particular, for static torsional buckling of a double-walled nanotube, it is shown that the critical buckling load cannot only be enhanced, but also be reduced when inserting an inner nanotube into an isolated single-walled one. Additionally, it is shown that the elastic medium always increases the critical buckling load of double-walled nanotubes. The critical buckling load of embedded double-walled nanotubes for dynamic torsional buckling is proved to be no less than that for static torsional buckling.  相似文献

In this paper the dynamic torsional buckling of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) embedded in an elastic medium is studied by using a continuum mechanics model. By introducing initial imperfections for MWNTs and applying the preferred mode analytical method, a buckling condition is derived for the buckling load and associated buckling mode. In particular, explicit expressions are obtained for embedded double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs). Numerical results show that, for both the DWNTs and embedded DWNTs, the buckling form shifts from the lower buckling mode to the higher buckling mode with increasing the buckling load, but the buckling mode is invari- able for a certain domain of the buckling load. It is also indicated that, the surrounding elastic medium generally has effect on the lower buckling mode of DWNTs only when compared with the corresponding one for individual DWNTs.  相似文献

The thermal effect on axially compressed buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube is studied in this paper. The effects of temperature change, surrounding elastic medium and van der Waals forces between the inner and outer nanotubes are taken into account. Using continuum mechanics, an elastic double-shell model with thermal effect is presented for axially compressed buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube embedded in an elastic matrix under thermal environment. Based on the model, an explicit formula for the critical axial stress is derived in terms of the buckling modes of the shell and the parameters that indicate the effects of temperature change, surrounding elastic medium and the van der Waals forces. Based on that, some simplified analysis is carried out to estimate the critical axial stress for axially compressed buckling of the double-walled carbon nanotube. Numerical results for the general case are obtained for the thermal effect on axially compressed buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube. It is shown that the axial buckling load of double-walled carbon nanotube under thermal loads is dependent on the wave number of axially buckling modes. And a conclusion is drawn that at low and room temperature the critical axial stress for infinitesimal buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube increase as the value of temperature change increases, while at high temperature the critical axial stress for infinitesimal buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube decrease as the value of temperature change increases.  相似文献

The structural instability of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has captured extensive attention due to the unique characteristic of extremely thin hollow cylinder structure. The previous studies usually focus on the buckling behavior without considering the effects of the wall number and initial pressure. In this paper, the axial buckling behavior of MWCNTs with the length-to-outermost radius ratio less than 20 is investigated within the framework of the Donnell shell theory. The governing equations for the infinitesimal buckling of MWCNTs are established, accounting for the van der Waals (vdW) interaction between layers. The effects of the wall number, initial pressure prior to buckling, and aspect ratio on the critical buckling mode, buckling load, and buckling strain are discussed, respectively. Specially, the four-walled and twenty-walled CNTs are studied in detail, indicating the fact that the buckling instability may occur in other layers besides the outermost layer. The obtained results extend the buckling analysis of the continuum-based model, and provide theoretical support for the application of CNTs.  相似文献

This paper describes an investigation into elastic buckling of an embedded multi-walled carbon nanotube under combined torsion and axial loading, which takes account of the radial constraint from the surrounding elastic medium and van der Waals force between two adjacent tube walls. Depending on the ratio of radius to thickness, the multi-walled carbon nanotubes discussed here are classified as thin, thick, and nearly solid. Critical buckling load with the corresponding mode is obtained for multi-walled carbon nanotubes under combined torsion and axial loading, with various values of the radius to thickness ratio and surrounded with different elastic media. The study indicates that the buckling mode (m, n) of an embedded multi-walled carbon nanotube under combined torsion and axial loading is unique and it is different from that with axial compression only. New features for the buckling of an embedded multi-walled carbon nanotube under combined torsion and axial loading and the meaningful numerical results are useful in the design of nanodrive device, nanotorsional oscillator and rotational actuators, where multi-walled carbon nanotubes act as basic elements.  相似文献

Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity theory, in this paper we comprehensively study the small-scale effects on the buckling behaviours of carbon honeycombs (CHCs). The MD simulation results show that the small-scale effects stemming from the long-range van der Waals interaction between carbon atoms can significantly affect the buckling behaviours of CHCs. To incorporate the small-scale effects into the theoretical analysis of the buckling of CHCs, we develop a nonlocal continuum mechanics (CM) model by employing Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity theory. Our nonlocal CM model is found to fit MD simulations well by setting the nonlocal parameter in the nonlocal CM model as 0.67. It is shown in our MD-based nonlocal CM model that when the cell length of CHCs is smaller than 7.93 Å the influence of small-scale effects on the bucking of CHCs becomes unnegligible and the small-scale effects can greatly reduce the critical buckling stress of CHCs. This reduction in critical buckling stress induced by the small-scale effects becomes more significant as the length of the cell wall decreases. Moreover, CHCs are found to display two different buckling modes when they are under different states of loading. The critical condition for the transition between these two buckling modes of CHCs can be greatly affected by the small-scale effects when the vertical cell wall and the inclined cell wall of CHCs have different lengths.  相似文献

In the present paper, the dynamic stability of multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs) embedded in an elastic medium is investigated including thermal environment effects. To this end, a nonlocal Timoshenko beam model is developed which captures small scale effects.Dynamic governing equations of the carbon nanotubes are formulated based on the Timoshenko beam theory including the effects of axial compressive force. Then a parametric study is conducted to investigate the influences of static load factor, temperature change, nonlocal parameter, slenderness ratio and spring constant of the elastic medium on the dynamic stability characteristics of MWCNTs with simply-supported end supports.  相似文献

This work is concerned with the thermo-electro-mechanical coupling transverse vibrations of axially moving piezoelectric nanobeams which reveal potential applications in self-powered components of biomedical nano-robot. The nonlocal theory and Euler piezoelectric beam model are employed to develop the governing partial differential equations of the mathematical model for axially moving piezoelectric nanobeams. The natural frequencies of nanobeams under simply supported and fully clamped boundary constraints are numerically determined based on the eigenvalue method. Subsequently, some detailed parametric studies are presented and it is shown that the nonlocal nanoscale effect and axial motion effect contribute to reduce the bending rigidity of axially moving piezoelectric nanobeam and hence its natural frequency decreases within the framework of nonlocal elasticity. Moreover, the natural frequency decreases with increasing the positive external voltage, axial compressive force and change of temperature, while increases with increasing the axial tensile force. The critical speed and critical axial compressive force are determined and the dynamical buckling behaviors of axially moving piezoelectric nanobeams are indicated. It is concluded the nonlocal nanoscale parameter plays a remarkable role in the size-dependent natural frequency, critical speed and critical axial compressive force.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted in which multiwalled carbon nanotubes were subjected to uniaxial compression and shell-buckling loads were measured. A comparison with existing theoretical models shows that the predictions are about 40–50% smaller than the experimentally measured buckling loads. This is in contrast to the classical elastic shell studies in which the experimental values were always substantially lower than the predicted values due to imperfection sensitivity. It is proposed that the discrepancy between the predicted and measured value might be due to imperfections in the multiwalled nanotubes in the form of sp 3 bonds between the tube walls, which introduce shear coupling between them. An analytical model is presented to estimate the effect of the shear coupling on the critical buckling strain, which shows that the contribution from shear coupling increases linearly with the effective shear modulus between the walls. Further, this contribution increases with the number of walls; the increment from each additional wall progressively decreases.  相似文献
