Exact solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations are investigated in the layer between parallel plates the distance between which changes proportionally to the square root of time. At the boundaries of the plates the no-slip condition is assigned. For approaching plates a countable family of exact solutions each of which continuously depends on the Reynolds number is obtained. At a sufficiently large Reynolds number, near the boundary a counterflow is formed: the velocity is directed oppositely to the average velocity. On the basis of the exact solution obtained, relative errors are calculated for the asymptotic theories of Reynolds lubricating layer and Prandtl boundary layer.  相似文献

The present paper investigates the impact of the velocity and density ratio on the turbulent mixing process in gas turbine blade film cooling. A cooling fluid is injected from an inclined pipe at α=30° into a turbulent boundary layer profile at a freestream Reynolds number of Re ∞  = 400,000. This jet-in-a-crossflow (JICF) problem is investigated using large-eddy simulations (LES). The governing equations comprise the Navier–Stokes equations plus additional transport equations for several species to simulate a non-reacting gas mixture. A variation of the density ratio is simulated by the heat-mass transfer analogy, i.e., gases of different density are effused into an air crossflow at a constant temperature. An efficient large-eddy simulation method for low subsonic flows based on an implicit dual time-stepping scheme combined with low Mach number preconditioning is applied. The numerical results and experimental velocity data measured using two-component particle-image velocimetry (PIV) are in excellent agreement. The results show the dynamics of the flow field in the vicinity of the jet hole, i.e., the recirculation region and the inclination of the shear layers, to be mainly determined by the velocity ratio. However, evaluating the cooling efficiency downstream of the jet hole the mass flux ratio proves to be the dominant similarity parameter, i.e., the density ratio between the fluids and the velocity ratio have to be considered.  相似文献

The flow developing downstream of a step change from smooth to rough surface condition is studied in the light of Townsend’s wall similarity hypothesis. Previous studies seem to support the hypothesis for channel and pipe flows, but there are considerable controversies about its application to boundary layers and in particular to surface roughness formed by spanwise bars. It has been suggested that this controversy arises from insufficient separation of scales between the boundary layer thickness and the roughness length scale. An experimental investigation has therefore been undertaken where the flow evolves from a fully developed smooth wall boundary layer at high Reynolds numbers over a step in surface roughness (Re θ = 13,400 at the step). The flow is mapped through the development of the internal layer until the flow is fully developed over the rough wall. The internal layer is found to grow as δ ∼ X 0.73, and after about 15 boundary layer thicknesses at the step, the internal layer has reached the outer edge of the incoming layer. At the last rough wall measurement station, the Reynolds number has grown to Re θ ≈ 32,600 and the ratio of boundary layer to roughness length scales is δ/k ≈ 140. The outer layer differences between the smooth and the rough wall data were found to be sufficiently small to conclude that for this setup the Townsend’s wall similarity hypothesis appears to hold.  相似文献

A fully developed mixed convection flow between inclined parallel flat plates filled with a porous medium is considered through which there is a constant flow rate and with heat being supplied to the fluid by the same uniform heat flux on each plate. The equations governing this flow are made non-dimensional and are seen to depend on two dimensionless parameters, a mixed convection parameter λ and the Péclet number Pe, as well as the inclination γ of the plates to the horizontal. The velocity and temperature profiles are obtained in terms of λ, Pe and γ when the channel is inclined in an upwards direction as well as for horizontal channels. The limiting cases of small and large λ and small Pe are considered with boundary-layer structures being seen to develop on the plates for large values of λ.  相似文献

A turbulent plane offset jet with small offset ratio   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Mean velocities and turbulence characteristics of a turbulent plane offset jet with a small offset ratio of 2.125 have been studied using laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). Static pressure measurements highlight the importance of side plates in enhancing two-dimensionality of the jet. The spatial distributions of turbulence intensities and Reynolds shear stress show a high turbulence recirculating flow region close to the nozzle plate between the jet and the offset plate. The LDA results have been used to examine the capability of three different turbulence models (i.e. k–ɛ, RNG and Reynolds stress) in predicting the velocity field of this jet. While all three models are able to predict qualitatively the recirculation, converging and reattachment regions observed experimentally, the standard k–ɛ turbulence model predicts a reattachment length that best agrees with the experimentally determined value. An analysis of fully developed combined free and forced convective flow in a fluid saturated porous medium channel bounded by two vertical parallel plates is presented. The flow is modeled using Brinkman equation model. The viscous and Darcy dissipation terms are also included in the energy equation. Three types of thermal boundary conditions such as isothermal–isothermal, isoflux–isothermal, and isothermal–isoflux for the left–right walls of the channel are considered. Analytical solutions for the governing ordinary differential equations are obtained by perturbation series method. In addition, closed form expressions for the Nusselt number at both the left and right channel walls are derived. Results have been presented for a wide range of governing parameters such as porous parameter, ratio of Grashof number and Reynolds number, viscosity ratio, width ratio, and conductivity ratio on velocity, and temperature fields. It is found that the presence of porous matrix in one of the region reduces the velocity and temperature.  相似文献

The receptivity of the boundary layer in the neighborhood of the attachment line of a cylinder inclined to the flow with respect to periodic vortex perturbations frozen into the stream is investigated. The problem considered simulates the interaction between external turbulence and the leading-edge swept wing boundary layer. It is shown that if the direction of the external perturbation vector is almost parallel to the leading edge, then the external perturbations are considerably strengthened at the outer boundary layer edge. This effect can cause laminar-turbulent transition on the attachment line at subcritical Reynolds numbers.Translated from Izvestiya Rossiiskoi Academii Nauk, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 6, 2004, pp. 72–85. We consider slow steady flows of Navier–Stokes-like fluids with pressure dependent viscosities between rotating infinite parallel plates with Navier slip boundary conditions. We derive exact solutions which correspond to flows in orthogonal and torsional rheometers, and investigate the effect of the slip coefficient and the material parameters on the solutions. We find that even when inertial effects are ignored, vorticity boundary layers develop at the upper boundary due to the pressure dependence of the viscosity. These boundary layers diminish and eventually disappear with increased slippage.  相似文献

Oscillatory flow in stacks of parallel plates is essential for the working of “standing wave” thermo-acoustic devices. In this paper, the flow in the transition from stack to open tube is studied experimentally using particle image velocimetry. When the flow is directed outwards of the stack, vortices originate behind the stack plates. The Strouhal to Reynolds ratio determines the vortex pattern behind the stack plates, varying from a single vortex pair to a complete vortex street. The influence of different plate-end shapes and porosities are also studied. The streaming velocity is measured using two different methods.  相似文献

A numerical study of pulsatile flow and mass transfer of an electrically conducting Newtonian biofluid via a channel containing porous medium is considered. The conservation equations are transformed and solved under boundary conditions prescribed at both walls of the channel, using a finite element method with two-noded line elements. The influence of magnetic field on the flow is studied using the dimensionless hydromagnetic number, Nm, which defines the ratio of magnetic (Lorentz) retarding force to the viscous hydrodynamic force. A Darcian linear impedance for low Reynolds numbers is incorporated in the transformed momentum equation and a second order drag force term for inertial (Forchheimer) effects. Velocity and concentration profiles across the channel width are plotted for various values of the Reynolds number (Re), Darcy parameter (λ), Forchheimer parameter (Nf), hydro-magnetic number (Nm), Schmidt number (Sc) and also with dimensionless time (T). Profiles of velocity varying in space and time are also provided. The conduit considered is rigid with a pulsatile pressure applied via an appropriate pressure gradient term. Increasing the hydromagnetic number (Nm) from 1 to 15 considerably depresses biofluid velocity (U) indicating that a magnetic field can be used as a flow control mechanism in, for example, medical applications. A rise in Nf from 1 to 20 strongly retards the flow development and decreases the velocity, U, across the width of the channel. The effects of other parameters on the flowfield are also discussed at length. The flow model also has applications in the analysis of electrically conducting haemotological fluids flowing through filtration media, diffusion of drug species in pharmaceutical hydromechanics, and also in general fluid dynamics of pulsatile systems.  相似文献

The interaction between a laminar boundary layer and an open cavity is investigated experimentally for medium range Reynolds numbers. Flow visualizations are carried out for three different observation directions in order to understand the spatial development of dynamical structures. In particular, synchronized visualizations in two parallel planes picture the transverse development of the flow. The study is conducted by changing the cavity aspect ratio, the Reynolds number and therefore the flow patterns inside the cavity. The issue is to emphasize the 3-D development of the flow. In particular, we show that the dynamical structures are not due to secondary shear layer instabilities.  相似文献

A numerical study of mixed convection in a vertical channel filled with a porous medium including the effect of inertial forces is studied by taking into account the effect of viscous and Darcy dissipations. The flow is modeled using the Brinkman–Forchheimer-extended Darcy equations. The two boundaries are considered as isothermal–isothermal, isoflux–isothermal and isothermal–isoflux for the left and right walls of the channel and kept either at equal or at different temperatures. The governing equations are solved numerically by finite difference method with Southwell–Over–Relaxation technique for extended Darcy model and analytically using perturbation series method for Darcian model. The velocity and temperature fields are obtained for various porous parameter, inertia effect, product of Brinkman number and Grashof number and the ratio of Grashof number and Reynolds number for equal and different wall temperatures. Nusselt number at the walls is also determined for three types of thermal boundary conditions. The viscous dissipation enhances the flow reversal in the case of downward flow while it counters the flow in the case of upward flow. The Darcy and inertial drag terms suppress the flow. It is found that analytical and numerical solutions agree very well for the Darcian model. An erratum to this article is available at .  相似文献

In this paper, we study exact solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations for a layer between parallel plates, the distance between which varies according to an arbitrary power law and whose boundary has a no-slip condition, are under study. A solution in the form of a power series of the Reynolds number is obtained. Comparison with the exact solutions is performed, and high accuracy of expansions for Reynolds numbers Re = 1–10 is shown. An accurate estimate of the error of the Reynolds thin layer approximation is obtained.  相似文献

A specially constructed hot-wire probe was used to obtain very near-wall velocity measurements in both a fully developed turbulent channel flow and flat plate boundary layer flow. The near-wall hot-wire probe, having been calibrated in a specially constructed laminar flow calibration rig, was used to measure the mean streamwise velocity profile, distributions of streamwise and spanwise intensities of turbulence and turbulence kinetic energy k in the viscous sublayer and beyond; these distributions compare very favorably with available DNS results obtained for channel flow. While low Reynolds number effects were clearly evident for the channel flow, these effects are much less distinct for the boundary layer flow. By assuming the dissipating range of eddy sizes to be statistically isotropic and the validity of Taylor's hypothesis, the dissipation rate ɛ iso in the very near-wall viscous sublayer region and beyond was determined for both the channel and boundary layer flows. It was found that if the convective velocity U c in Taylor's hypothesis was assumed to be equal to the mean velocity  at the point of measurement, the value of (ɛ+ iso)1 thus obtained agrees well with that of (ɛ +)DNS for y + ≥ 80 for channel flow; this suggests the validity of assuming U c= and local isotropy for large values of y +. However, if U c was assumed to be 10.6u τ , the value of (ɛ+ iso)2 thus obtained was found to compare reasonably well with the distribution of (ɛ+ iso)DNS for y +≤ 15. A numerical method is developed for investigating the two‐dimensional unsteady viscous flow over an inclined elliptic cylinder placed in a uniform stream of infinite extent. The direction of the free stream is normal to the cylinder axis and the flow field unsteadiness arises from two effects, the first is due to the flow field development following the start of the motion and the second is due to vortex shedding in the wake region. The time‐dependent flow is governed by the full conservation equations of mass and momentum with no boundary layer approximations. The parameters involved are the cylinder axis ratio, Reynolds number and the angle of attack. The investigation covers a Reynolds number range up to 5000. The minor–major axis ratio of the elliptic cylinder ranges between 0.5 and 0.6, and the angle of attack ranges between 0° and 90°. A series truncation method based on Fourier series is used to reduce the governing Navier–Stokes equations to two coupled infinite sets of second‐order differential equations. These equations are approximated by retaining only a finite number of terms and are then solved by approximating the derivatives using central differences. The results reveal an unusual phenomenon of negative lift occurring shortly after the start of motion. Various comparisons are made with previous theoretical and experimental results, including flow visualizations, to validate the solution methodology. Oscillatory MHD Couette flow of electrically conducting fluid between two parallel plates in a rotating system in the presence of an inclined magnetic field is considered when the upper plate is held at rest and the lower plate oscillates non-torsionally . An exact solution of the governing equations has been obtained by using Laplace transform technique. Asymptotic behavior of the solution is analyzed for M 2 1, K 2 1 and ω 1 and for large M 2, K 2 and ω. Numerical results of velocities are depicted graphically and the frictional shearing stresses are presented in tables. It is found that a thin boundary layer is formed near the lower plate, for large values of rotation parameter K 2, Hartman number M 2 and frequency parameter ω. The thickness of this boundary layer increases with increase in inclination of the magnetic field with the axis of rotation.  相似文献

A two-phase flow with high Reynolds numbers in the subsonic, transonic, and supersonic parts of the nozzle is considered within the framework of the Prandtl model, i.e., the flow is divided into an inviscid core and a thin boundary layer. Mutual influence of the gas and solid particles is taken into account. The Euler equations are solved for the gas in the flow core, and the boundary-layer equations are used in the near-wall region. The particle motion in the inviscid region is described by the Lagrangian approach, and trajectories and temperatures of particle packets are tracked. The behavior of particles in the boundary layer is described by the Euler equations for volume-averaged parameters of particles. The computed particle-velocity distributions are compared with experiments in a plane nozzle. It is noted that particles inserted in the subsonic part of the nozzle are focused at the nozzle centerline, which leads to substantial flow deceleration in the supersonic part of the nozzle. The effect of various boundary conditions for the flow of particles in the inviscid region is considered. For an axisymmetric nozzle, the influence of the contour of the subsonic part of the nozzle, the loading ratio, and the particle diameter on the particle-flow parameters in the inviscid region and in the boundary layer is studied. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 46, No. 6, pp. 65–77, November–December, 2005.  相似文献

The experimental study of the turbulent boundary layer under external flow conditions similar to those found on the suction side of airfoils in trailing-edge post-stall conditions has been performed. Detailed boundary layer measurements were carried out with a PIV system and a two-sensor wall probe. They cover the region downstream of the suction peak where the boundary layer is subjected to a very strong adverse pressure gradient and has suffered from an abrupt transition from strong favorable to strong adverse pressure gradients. The experiments show that in spite of these severe conditions, the boundary layer is surprisingly able to recover a state of near-equilibrium before separating. In this near-equilibrium zone, the mean velocity defect and all the measured Reynolds stresses are self-similar (in the outer region) with respect to the outer scales δ and U e δ*/δ. The mean momentum balance indicates that for the upper half of the outer region, the advection terms dominate all the stress-gradient terms in the zone prior to separation. A large portion of the outer region has therefore become essentially an inertial flow zone where an approach toward equilibrium is expected. An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

A survey is made of the standard deviation of the streamwise velocity fluctuations in near-wall turbulence and in particular of the Reynolds-number-dependency of its peak value. The following canonical flow geometries are considered: an incompressible turbulent boundary layer under zero pressure gradient, a fully developed two-dimensional channel and a cylindrical pipe flow. Data were collected from 47 independent experimental and numerical studies, which cover a Reynolds number range of R θ=U θ/v=300−20,920 for the boundary layer with θ the momentum thickness and R +=u *R/v=100-4,300 for the internal flows with R the pipe radius or the channel half-width. It is found that the peak value of the rms-value normalised by the friction velocity, u *, is within statistical errors independent of the Reynolds number. The most probable value for this parameter was found to be 2.71±0.14 and 2.70±0.09 for the case of a boundary layer and an internal flow, respectively. The present survey also includes some data of the streamwise velocity fluctuations measured over a riblet surface. We find no significant difference in magnitude of the normalised peak value between the riblet and smooth surfaces and this property of the normalised peak value may for instance be exploited to estimate the wall shear stress from the streamwise velocity fluctuations. We also consider the skewness of the streamwise velocity fluctuations and find its value to be close to zero at the position where the variance has its peak value. This is explained with help of the equations of the third-order moment of velocity fluctuations. These results for the peak value of the rms of the streamwise velocity fluctuations and also the coincidence of this peak with the zero value of the third moment can be interpreted as confirmation of local equilibrium in the near-wall layer, which is the basis of inner-layer scaling. Furthermore, these results can be also used as a requirement which turbulence models for the second and triple velocity correlations should satisfy. The authors are indebted to Prof. P. Bradshaw for making available his list of references on this topic and for his remarks on “active” and “inactive” motions. We also gratefully acknowledge discussions with Prof. I. Castro regarding the value of σ u + above rough walls.  相似文献

Oscillating flow near the end of a stack of parallel plates placed in a standing wave resonator is investigated using particle image velocimetry (PIV). The Reynolds number, Re d , based on the plate thickness and the velocity amplitude at the entrance to the stack, is controlled by varying the acoustic excitation (so-called drive ratio) and by using two configurations of the stacks. As the Reynolds number changes, a range of distinct flow patterns is reported for the fluid being ejected from the stack. Symmetrical and asymmetrical vortex shedding phenomena are shown and two distinct modes of generating “vortex streets” are identified.  相似文献
