It is interesting that inverse M-matrices are zero-pattern (power) invariant. The main contribution of the present work is that we characterize some structured matrices that are zero-pattern (power) invariant. Consequently, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for these structured matrices to be inverse M-matrices. In particular, to check if a given circulant or symmetric Toeplitz matrix is an inverse M-matrix, we only need to consider its pattern structure and verify that one of its principal submatrices is an inverse M-matrix.  相似文献

In this article we characterize the closed cones respectively generated by the symmetric inverse M-matrices and by the inverses of symmetric row diagonally dominant M-matrices. We show the latter has a finite number of extremal rays, while the former has infinitely many extremal rays. As a consequence we prove that every potential is the sum of ultrametric matrices.  相似文献

A well-known property of an M-matrix M is that the inverse is element-wise non-negative, which we write as M-1?0. In this paper, we consider element-wise perturbations of non-symmetric tridiagonal M-matrices and obtain sufficient bounds on the perturbations so that the non-negative inverse persists. These bounds improve the bounds recently given by Kennedy and Haynes [Inverse positivity of perturbed tridiagonal M-matrices, Linear Algebra Appl. 430 (2009) 2312-2323]. In particular, when perturbing the second diagonals (elements (l,l+2) and (l,l-2)) of M, these sufficient bounds are shown to be the actual maximum allowable perturbations. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of our estimates.  相似文献

Generalizations of M-matrices which may not have a nonnegative inverse   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Generalizations of M-matrices are studied, including the new class of GM-matrices. The matrices studied are of the form sI-B with B having the Perron-Frobenius property, but not necessarily being nonnegative. Results for these classes of matrices are shown, which are analogous to those known for M-matrices. Also, various splittings of a GM-matrix are studied along with conditions for their convergence.  相似文献

This paper defines a new type of matrix (which will be called a centro-invertible matrix) with the property that the inverse can be found by simply rotating all the elements of the matrix through 180 degrees about the mid-point of the matrix. Centro-invertible matrices have been demonstrated in a previous paper to arise in the analysis of a particular algorithm used for the generation of uniformly-distributed pseudo-random numbers. An involutory matrix is one for which the square of the matrix is equal to the identity. It is shown that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the centro-invertible matrices and the involutory matrices. When working in modular arithmetic this result allows all possible k by k centro-invertible matrices with integer entries modulo M to be enumerated by drawing on existing theoretical results for involutory matrices.Consider the k by k matrices over the integers modulo M. If M takes any specified finite integer value greater than or equal to two then there are only a finite number of such matrices and it is valid to consider the likelihood of such a matrix arising by chance. It is possible to derive both exact expressions and order-of-magnitude estimates for the number of k by k centro-invertible matrices that exist over the integers modulo M. It is shown that order (N) of the N=M(k2) different k by k matrices modulo M are centro-invertible, so that the proportion of these matrices that are centro-invertible is order (1/N).  相似文献

We prove an upper bound for the spectral radius of the Hadamard product of nonnegative matrices and a lower bound for the minimum eigenvalue of the Fan product of M-matrices. These improve two existing results.  相似文献

If A is a nonsingular M-matrix, the elements of the sequence {A?k} all have the same zero pattern. Using the Drazin inverse, we show that a similar zero pattern invariance property holds for a class of matrices which is larger than the generalized M-matrices.  相似文献

Two Hermitian matrices A,BMn(C) are said to be Hermitian-congruent if there exists a nonsingular Hermitian matrix CMn(C) such that B=CAC. In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for two nonsingular simultaneously unitarily diagonalizable Hermitian matrices A and B to be Hermitian-congruent. Moreover, when A and B are Hermitian-congruent, we describe the possible inertias of the Hermitian matrices C that carry the congruence. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for any 2-by-2 nonsingular Hermitian matrices to be Hermitian-congruent. In both of the studied cases, we show that if A and B are real and Hermitian-congruent, then they are congruent by a real symmetric matrix. Finally we note that if A and B are 2-by-2 nonsingular real symmetric matrices having the same sign pattern, then there is always a real symmetric matrix C satisfying B=CAC. Moreover, if both matrices are positive, then C can be picked with arbitrary inertia.  相似文献

Some new bounds on the spectral radius of matrices   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A new lower bound on the smallest eigenvalue τ(AB) for the Fan product of two nonsingular M-matrices A and B is given. Meanwhile, we also obtain a new upper bound on the spectral radius ρ(A°B) for nonnegative matrices A and B. These bounds improve some results of Huang (2008) [R. Huang, Some inequalities for the Hadamard product and the Fan product of matrices, Linear Algebra Appl. 428 (2008) 1551-1559].  相似文献

The class of real matrices which are both monotone (inverse positive) and positive stable is investigated. Such matrices, called N-matrices, have the well-known class of nonsingular M-matrices as a proper subset. Relationships between the classes of N-matrices, M-matrices, nonsingular totally nonnegative matrices, and oscillatory matrices are developed. Conditions are given for some classes of matrices, including tridiagonal and some Toeplitz matrices, to be N-matrices.  相似文献

This is an update of the 1981 survey by the first author. In the meantime, a considerable amount has been learned about the very special structure of the important class of inverse M-matrices. Developments since the earlier survey are emphasized, but we have tried to be somewhat complete; and, some results have not previously been published. Some proofs are given where appropriate and references are given for others. After some elementary preliminaries, results are grouped by certain natural categories.  相似文献

Let A be a primitive matrix of order n, and let k be an integer with 1?k?n. The kth local exponent of A, is the smallest power of A for which there are k rows with no zero entry. We have recently obtained the maximum value for the kth local exponent of doubly symmetric primitive matrices of order n with 1?k?n. In this paper, we use the graph theoretical method to give a complete characterization of those doubly symmetric primitive matrices whose kth local exponent actually attain the maximum value.  相似文献

The scrambling index of symmetric primitive matrices   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A nonnegative square matrix A is primitive if some power Ak>0 (that is, Ak is entrywise positive). The least such k is called the exponent of A. In [2], Akelbek and Kirkland defined the scrambling index of a primitive matrix A, which is the smallest positive integer k such that any two rows of Ak have at least one positive element in a coincident position. In this paper, we give a relation between the scrambling index and the exponent for symmetric primitive matrices, and determine the scrambling index set for the class of symmetric primitive matrices. We also characterize completely the symmetric primitive matrices in this class such that the scrambling index is equal to the maximum value.  相似文献

The relationship between inverse M-matrices and matrices whose graph is transitive is studied. The results are applied to obtain a new proof of the characterization, due to M. Lewin and M. Neumann, of (0,1) inverse M-matrices.  相似文献

We prove the conjecture of Falikman-Friedland-Loewy on the parity of the degrees of projective varieties of n×n complex symmetric matrices of rank at most k. We also characterize the parity of the degrees of projective varieties of n×n complex skew symmetric matrices of rank at most 2p. We give recursive relations which determine the parity of the degrees of projective varieties of m×n complex matrices of rank at most k. In the case the degrees of these varieties are odd, we characterize the minimal dimensions of subspaces of n×n skew symmetric real matrices and of m×n real matrices containing a nonzero matrix of rank at most k. The parity questions studied here are also of combinatorial interest since they concern the parity of the number of plane partitions contained in a given box, on the one hand, and the parity of the number of symplectic tableaux of rectangular shape, on the other hand.  相似文献

It is shown that the ω- and τ-matrices, the weakly sign symmetric matrices, the R- and V-matrices, and the matrices c-equivalent to an M-matrix or to a real matrix with nonpositive off-diagonal elements, can all be characterized by the same determinantal inequality, which we call a generalized Fan inequality.  相似文献

In this paper the relation betweenEP--matrices andE k P--matrices over an arbitrary filedF is studied. Further, conditions for the product ofE k P--matrices to be anE k P--matrix and for the reverse order law to hold for the polynomial Moore-Penrose inverse of the product ofE k P--matrices are determined  相似文献

Some inequalities for the Hadamard product and the Fan product of matrices   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
If A and B are nonsingular M-matrices, a sharp lower bound on the smallest eigenvalue τ(AB) for the Fan product of A and B is given, and a sharp lower bound on τ(A°B-1) for the Hadamard product of A and B-1 is derived. In addition, we also give a sharp upper bound on the spectral radius ρ(A°B) for nonnegative matrices A and B.  相似文献

Let Mm,n(B) be the semimodule of all m×n Boolean matrices where B is the Boolean algebra with two elements. Let k be a positive integer such that 2?k?min(m,n). Let B(m,n,k) denote the subsemimodule of Mm,n(B) spanned by the set of all rank k matrices. We show that if T is a bijective linear mapping on B(m,n,k), then there exist permutation matrices P and Q such that T(A)=PAQ for all AB(m,n,k) or m=n and T(A)=PAtQ for all AB(m,n,k). This result follows from a more general theorem we prove concerning the structure of linear mappings on B(m,n,k) that preserve both the weight of each matrix and rank one matrices of weight k2. Here the weight of a Boolean matrix is the number of its nonzero entries.  相似文献

Two new classes of matrices are introduced, containing hermitian positive semi-definite matrices and M-matrices. The relation to other well-known classes such as ω and τ-matrices and weakly sign symmetric matrices is examined, and invariance properties are shown.  相似文献
