A modified dissolution rate equation was used to quantitatively investigate the contribution of simple bile salt (BS) micelles and mixed BS‐lecithin (L) micelles to a cholesterol monohydrate (ChM) dissolution. Using a least‐squares technique to assess the relationship between the ChM dissolution rate and BS concentration at a constant L concentration, good curve‐fittings were obtained when the BS monomer concentration was set to equal the critical micellar concentration (CMC). For taurochenodeoxycholate (TCDC), a dihydroxy BS, the resulting values of parameters show that the simple TCDC micelle rate constant (ks) increases, but the mixed TCDC‐L micelle rate constant (kM ) decreases with increasing L concentrations. As for taurocholate (TC), a tri‐hydroxy BS, a ChM dissolution study was conducted over the initial 2 hour period in different TC‐L solutions. A similar curve‐fitting analysis revealed that the simple TC micelle ks is independent of L concentration and is much higher than the kM of mixed TC‐L micelles. Moreover, the outcome of the analysis supports previously reported equilibrium dialysis study results concerning the BS to L ratio of mixed BS‐L micelles. According to the collision theory, the resulting ks and kM values are interpreted.

The solubilization dynamics of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) liposomes, as induced by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), were investigated; this investigation was motivated by several types of atypical behavior that were observed in the solubilization in this system. The liposomes and surfactants were mixed in a microchip, and the solubilization reaction of each liposome was observed using a microscope. We found that solubilization occurred not only via a uniform dissolution of the liposome membrane, but also via a dissolution involving the rapid motion of the liposome, or via active emission of protrusions from the liposome surface. We statistically analyzed the distribution of these patterns and considered hypotheses accounting for the solubilization mechanism based on the results. When the SDS concentration was lower than the critical micelle concentration (CMC), the SDS monomers entered the liposome membrane, and mixed micelles were emitted. When the SDS concentration was higher than the CMC, the SDS micelles directly attacked the liposome membrane, and many SDS molecules were taken up; this caused instability, and atypical solubilization patterns were triggered. The size dependence of the solubilization patterns was also investigated. When the particle size was smaller, the SDS molecules were found to be homogeneously dispersed throughout the whole membrane, which dissolved uniformly. In contrast, when the particle size was larger, the density of SDS molecules increased locally, instability was induced, and atypical dissolution patterns were often observed.

Micellar catalysis by nine cationic surfactants of the basic hydrolysis of 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene(DNCB) was studied. The results obtained are as follows: (I) The second-order constants k2 for the hydrolysis reaction of DNCB catalized by the cationic micelles increase by a factor of 11–100 than that in water. Plots of k2 against the surfactant concentration show an S-type curve, and the catalytic effect is observed below the critical micelle concentration(CMC) of the surfactants. (2) For a series of surfactants, there is an optimal chain length for the alkyl of the surfactants to show the greatest catalytic effect. (3) The hydrolysis rate of DNCB decreases as the base concentration increases. (4) For the surfactants with the same hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups, chlorides have advantage over bromides in enhancing the reaction rate. These results can be interpreted in term of the changes in CMC, micelle size, solubilization capacity of the micelles, binding degree of counterion et al.

The solubility of n-pentane gas in aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), SDS-0.1 wt% polyethylene oxide (PEG), SDS-0.1 wt% PEG+NaCl (0.1 mol/l), and SDS-0.1 wt% PEG+NaOH (0.1 mol/l) has been determined at 318.15 K. The concentration of SDS (m(SDS)) is up to 50 mmol/kg. The solubility increases linearly with the concentration of SDS above its critical micelle concentration (CMC) or critical aggregation concentration (CAC), indicating that micelles in the solutions solubilize the gas molecules and the solubility of n-pentane gas in the micelles is independent of the SDS concentration. It was found that the solubilization ability of micelles bound to PEG and free micelles to n-pentane gas is almost the same. The solubility of n-pentane gas in micelle phase is three magnitudes higher than that in the bulk solution. The solubilization property of SDS is changed by the addition of PEG, although the solubilizing effect of the polymer alone is not considerable. NaCl and NaOH affect the solubilization noticeably and increase the interaction strength between SDS and PEG. The standard Gibbs energies for the transfer of n-pentane gas from bulk phase to micelle phase are large negative values, indicating that the hydrocarbon gas prefers to exist in the hydrophobic interior of the micelles.

Electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) of the nitroxide labelled fatty acid probes (5-, 16-doxyl stearic acid) was used to monitor the micelle microviscosity of three surfactants at various concentrations in aqueous solution: sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). At low surfactant concentration, there is no micelle, the ESR probe is dissolved in water/surfactant homogeneous phase and gives his microviscosity. At higher surfactant concentration, an abrupt increase in microviscosity indicates the apparition of micelles and, the solubilization of the probes in micelles. The microviscosity of the three surfactants, in a large surfactant range, was obtained as well as the critical micelle concentration (CMC). The microviscosity increased slightly with the increase in surfactant concentration. Phosphate buffer lowered the CMC value and generally increased the microviscosity.

Solubility data of methane in aqueous solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) with different concentrations were measured at ambient temperature and near hydrate conditions. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the number of methane molecules dissolved in each micelle of the methane + water + SDS system were calculated and compared with those of the ethylene + water + SDS system. The results demonstrated that the micelles could be formed in the SDS concentration range where an efficient promotion effect on hydrate formation was previously reported; the micelle solubilization to methane molecules was remarkable near hydrate conditions, and the ethylene molecules could be solubilized in micelles in preference to methane molecules.

The micellar solubilization mechanism of curcumin by mixed surfactants of SDS and Brij35 was investigated at the molecular scale by NMR spectroscopy. Through the investigation of the micelle formation process, types and structures of mixed micelles and solubilization sites, the intrinsic factors influencing the solubilization capacity were revealed. For systems with αSDS = 0.5 and 0.2, the obtained molar solubilization ratios (MSRs) are consistent with the MSRideal values. However, for αSDS = 0.8, the solubilization capacity of curcumin is weakened compared to the MSRideal. Furthermore, only one single mixed SDS/Brij35 micelles are formed for αSDS = 0.5 and 0.2. However, for αSDS = 0.8, there are separate SDS-rich and Brij35-rich mixed micelles formed. In addition, NOESY spectra show that the interaction patterns of SDS and Brij35 in mixed micelles are similar for three systems, as are the solubilization sites of curcumin. Therefore, for αSDS = 0.5 and 0.2 with single mixed micelles formed, the solubility of curcumin depends only on the mixed micelle composition, which is almost equal to the surfactant molar ratio. Although curcumin is solubilized in both separate micelles at αSDS = 0.8, a less stable micelle structure may be responsible for the low solubility. This study provides new insights into the investigation and application of mixed micelle solubilization.

The formation of micelles in aqueous mixtures of a carbohydrate-based bolaamphiphile and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is investigated by surface tension and small-angle neutron scattering. The obtained values of critical micelle concentration (CMC) are analyzed within the framework of regular solution theory. Synergetic interactions between the bolaamphiphile and SDS are observed (parameter beta is negative; a minimum in the plot CMC vs composition). SANS data are collected for mixtures containing protonated and deuterated SDS. This gives us the possibility to conclude that mixed micelles with a homogeneous distribution of surfactant molecules within the micelle are formed. The shape of the micelles is found to be slightly oblate.

A modified rotating disk apparatus was used to investigate the mass transfer of two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds, naphthalene and phenanthrene from a synthesized non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) comprised of hexadecane and the 2 PAHs into different non-ionic surfactant solutions. Major factors influencing the rate of solubilization of PAHs from a NAPL in micelles of different non-ionic surfactants were determined. As the surfactant concentration increased, the mass transfer coefficients for both PAHs from the NAPL decreased. The maximum rates of solubilization of the PAHs however increase with surfactant dose. The rate of solubilization was found to be limited by rates of desorption of mixed micelles from the NAPL and their rate of diffusion into the bulk solution phase. The influence of the surfactant molecular structure on the kinetics of the solubilization process was investigated. The results suggested that the length of the alkyl portion of the non-ionic surfactant and the micelle volume influenced the solubilization kinetics. The results of the investigation improve our ability to provide a rational basis for selecting the optimum surfactant and dose to enhance the solubilization of PAHs from NAPLs.

Simulations based on dissipative particle dynamics are performed to investigate the solubilization mechanism of vesicles by surfactants. Surfactants tend to partition themselves between vesicle and the bulk solution. It is found that only surfactants with suitable hydrophobicity are able to solubilize vesicles by forming small mixed micelles. Surfactants with inadequate hydrophobicity tend to stay in the bulk solution and only a few of them enter into the vesicle. Consequently, the vesicle structure remains intact for all surfactant concentrations studied. On the contrary, surfactants with excessive hydrophobicity are inclined to incorporate with the vesicle and thus the vesicle size continues to grow as the surfactant concentration increases. Instead of forming discrete mixed micelles, lipid and surfactant are associated into large aggregates taking the shapes of cylinders, donuts, bilayers, etc. For addition of surfactant with moderate hydrophobicity, perforated vesicles are observed before the formation of mixed micelles and thus the solubilization mechanism is more intricate than the well-known three-stage hypothesis. As the apparent critical micellar concentration (φ(s,v)(a,CMC)) is attained, pure surfactant micelles form and the vesicle deforms because the distribution of surfactant within the bilayer is no longer uniform. When the surfactant concentration reaches φ(s,v)(p), the vesicle perforates. The extent of perforation grows with increasing surfactant concentration. The solubilization process begins at φ(s,v) (sol), and lipids leave the vesicle and join surfactant micelles to form mixed micelles. Eventually, total collapse of the vesicle is observed. In general, one has φ(s,v)(a,CMC)≤φ(s,v)(p)≤φ(s,v)(sol).

The migration behavior of cationic solutes and influences of the interactions of cationic solutes with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on the formation of micelles and its critical micelle concentration (CMC) were investigated by capillary electrophoresis at neutral pH. Catecholamines and structurally related compounds, including epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine, norephedrine, and tyramine, which involve different extents of hydrophobic, ionic and hydrogen-bonding interactions with SDS surfactant, are selected as cationic solutes. The dependence of the effective electrophoretic mobility of cationic solutes on the concentration of surfactant monomers in the premicellar region provides direct evidence of the formation of ion-pairs between cationic solutes and anionic dodecyl sulfate monomers. Three different approaches, based on the variations of either the effective electrophoretic mobility or the retention factor as a function of surfactant concentration in the premicellar and micellar regions, and the linear relationship between the retention factor and the product of a distribution coefficient and the phase ratio, were considered to determine the CMC value of SDS micelles. The suitability of the methods used for the determination of the CMC of SDS with these cationic solutes was discussed. Depending on the structures of cationic solutes and electrophoretic conditions, the CMC value of SDS determined varies in a wide concentration range. The results indicate that, in addition to hydrophobic interaction, both ionic and hydrogen-bonding interactions have pronounced effects on the formation of SDS micelles. Ionic interaction between cationic solutes and SDS surfactant stabilizes the SDS micelles, whereas hydrogen-bonding interactions weakens the solubilization of the attractive ionic interaction. The elevation of the CMC of SDS depends heavily on hydrogen-bonding interactions between cationic solutes and SDS surfactant. Thus, the CMC value of SDS is remarkably elevated with catecholamines, such as epinephrine and norepinephrine, as compared with norephedrine. In addition, the effect of methanol content in the sample solution of these cationic solutes on the CMC of SDS was also examined.

To increase the solubility and cytotoxicity of poorly soluble anticancer drug camptothecin (CPT), mixed micelles made of Pluronic P105 (P105) and d-alpha-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1,000 succinate (TPGS) were prepared. The interaction of Pluronic and TPGS was studied and critical micelle concentration (CMC) was used to evaluate the micellar stability towards dilution. Poorly soluble anticancer drug CPT was incorporated into the mixed micelles. The solubility of CPT by the mixed micelles was more than that of the free drug. The cytotoxicity of the CPT-loaded mixed micelles against MCF-7 cancer cell in vitro was remarkably higher than that of the free drug.

The interaction between sodium dodecylbenezen sulfonate(SDBS) and Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) has been studied,' using surface tension and dye solubilization to determine the critical micelle concentration(CMC) without PEO, the critical aggregate concentration(cac) and polymer saturation concentration(c2) in the presence of PEO. The structure of surfactant-polymer complexes is analyzed by ESR and UV-vis spectra. For SDBS-PEO system, the result indicates that ptoymer-surfactant complexes have a more “ open” structure than the ordinary micelles. The polymer molecules may penetrate into the palisade of the micelles. Polyacrylamide(PAm) molecules remain in bulk solution as free molecules, and do not interact with SDBS.

Mixed micelles made of Pluronic P105 (P105) and poly(ethylene glycol)-phosphatidyl ethanolamine conjugate (PEG-PE) were prepared. The interaction of Pluronic and PEG-PE was studied and the interaction parameter beta and critical micelle concentration (CMC) were used to evaluate the micellar stability toward dilution. The results showed that certain mixed micelles were more stable than pure Pluronic micelles upon dilution. The mixed micelles were used to trap the poorly soluble anticancer drug camptothecin (CPT). The cytotoxicity of the CPT-loaded mixed micelles against MCF-7 cancer cell was higher than that of CPT-loaded P105 micelles and much higher than that of the free drug.

Conductivity and static fluorescence measurements have been carried out at 25 degrees C to study the monomeric and micellar phases of aqueous solutions of mixed micelles constituted by a conventional cationic surfactant, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (D(12)TAB), and a tricyclic antidepressant drug, amitriptyline hydrochloride (AMYTP), with aggregation properties. From conductivity data, the total mixed critical micelle concentration and the dissociation degree of the mixed micelle have been obtained, while fluorescence experiments allow for the determination of the total aggregation number, and the micropolarity of micellar inside. Furthermore, the partial contribution of each surfactant to the mixed micellization process, through their critical micelle concentrations and their aggregation numbers have been determined, as well. The solubilization of the drug in the mixed micelles has been also studied through the mass action model, by determining the association constant between the micelles and the drug. From these results, the use of the micelles studied in this work as potential models for vectors of antidepressant drugs of the amitriptyline family has been discussed. The theoretical aspects of the mixed micellization process have been also analyzed.

In this study the mixed micelle behavior of an alkyl polyglycoside is compared to a surfactant of polyoxyethylene type, by means of surface tension measurements. The two nonionic surfactants are compared in mixed micelle systems together with an anionic surfactant. The surfactant mixtures are: decyl-beta-maltoside (C(10)M) with dodecyl benzenesulfonate (C(12)BS) and octaethyleneglycol mono n-decyl ether (C(10)EO(8)) with C(12)BS. The mixture of C(10)M and C(10)EO(8) is also studied. Critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the concentration at which the surface tension reduction is 20 mNm(-1) (C(20)) are determined at different mixing ratios of the surfactant mixtures. By applying the nonideal mixed micelle theory, interaction parameters at CMC (beta(CMC)) and C(20) (beta(C20)) are calculated for the surfactant mixtures. The results show that the C(10)M-C(12)BS mixture has a beta(CMC) parameter of -2.1, whereas the beta(CMC) parameter for the C(10)EO(8)-C(12)BS mixture is -3.3, indicating a weaker net attractive interaction between C(10)M and C(12)BS than between C(10)EO(8) and C(12)BS. This is attributed to a small negative and positive charge of the respective nonionic surfactants. This is supported by a slightly negative beta(CMC) parameter obtained for the surfactant mixture C(10)M-C(10)EO(8), indicating a small net attractive interaction between the two nonionic surfactants. Abstract

Diffusion coefficients of different aggregates in aqueous solutions formed by an amphiphilic block copolymer, Pluronic F127 (F127), were determined by cyclic voltammetry, and the critical micelle concentration (CMC, 4.31 × 10?4 mol L?1) of F127 was obtained. The added n‐butanol facilitates the formation of micelles from the monomers of F127 and makes the critical micelle temperature (CMT) of F127 solutions decrease. The diffusion coefficient of the F127 micelles decreases relatively fast at first with increasing n‐butanol and then the decreasing trend slows after the solubilization of n‐butanol in micelles reaches maximum.

The influence of solubilized solutes on the micellization and critical micelle concentration (CMC) of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were investigated by means of capillary electrophoresis (CE). Three different structural types of test solutes, including chloropyridines. chlorophenols and cephalosporins with different binding strength to SDS micelles, were selected in this study. The variations of the effective electrophoretic mobility of these solutes as a function of SDS concentration in the premicellar and micellar regions were analyzed. Interestingly, the results indicate that, in the presence of these solubilized solutes, the micellization of SDS may occur over a range of SDS concentration, with the aggregate size increasing over this range. Depending on the nature of solubilized solutes and the extent of the interactions between solubilized solutes and SDS micelles, the CMC value of SDS may vary significantly. The incorporation of solubilized solutes into SDS micelles to form mixed micelles is proposed to interpret the migration behavior of solubilized solutes in CE.
