It has been clarified that syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) forms co‐crystalline structures with polyethylene glycol dimethyl ethers (PEGDMEs) with molecular weights ranging from 178 to 1 000 g · mol−1 through a guest exchange procedure assisted by a plasticizing agent. The PEGDME molecules are incorporated into the spaces between sPS polymer sheets consisting of (T2G2)2 helices. The results of X‐ray diffraction and gravimetric measurements suggest that one or less molecules are included per unit cell for PEGDME with average molecular weight of 1 000 g · mol−1, which indicates the possibility that longer polymeric molecules can be introduced into sPS lattices with multiple site occupation.

Three‐dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) and poly(p‐methyl styrene) (sPPMS) are synthesized using silica colloidal crystal templates with varied diameters in the range of 548–214 nm, and the effect of polymerization space on the conformation of the resulting 3DOM polymers is investigated by spectroscopy and thermal analysis. In‐situ polymerizations of styrene and p‐methyl styrene within the silica templates induce the resulting 3DOM polymers with different conformations and packing of chains, which are different from those of bulk polymers prepared in the absence of templates. Polymerizations in restricted silica templates result in un‐helixication of 3DOM sPS chains and helixication of 3DOM sPPMS chains.

Poly(L ‐lactide)/layered aluminosilicate nanocomposites were synthesized in bulk by ring‐opening polymerization in the presence of two organo‐modified montmorillonites. When the organo‐modifier consisted of an ammonium cation bearing primary hydroxyl groups, polymerization was initiated by the alcohol functions after adequate activation. The growing polymer chains were directly “grafted” onto the clay surface through the hydroxyl‐functionalized ammonium cations yielding exfoliated nanocomposites with enhanced thermal stability.

Summary: Fabrication of honeycomb‐patterned films from amphiphilic dendronized block copolymer (PEO113b‐PDMA82) by ‘on‐solid surface spreading’ and ‘on‐water spreading’ method is reported. Highly ordered honeycomb films with quasi‐horizontally paralleled double‐layered structure can be fabricated by the on‐solid surface spreading method. This work raises the possibility that such structures can be formed in amphiphilic dendronized block copolymers and extends the family of source materials.

Summary: Nitroxide‐mediated polymerization of styrene in a continuous tubular reactor has been demonstrated for the first time. The polymerization kinetics in the tubular reactor are similar to those in a batch reactor. The number average molecular weight increases linearly with conversion, and chain extension experiments were successful, indicating that the living nature of the polymerization is maintained in the tubular reactor.

Summary: A water‐soluble gold nanoparticle aggregate 2 was prepared by chloroauric acid and a polypseudorotaxane 1 of mono‐6‐thio‐β‐cyclodextrin with poly(propylene glycol) bis(2‐aminopropyl ether) ( ≈ 2 000) in the presence of sodium borohydride in N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) solution. The investigative results indicated that the gold nanoparticle aggregate 2 might act as an efficient DNA‐cleavage reagent.

Cross‐linked lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) assemblies represent a new class of polymer materials for membrane applications. These materials are formed by the phase‐segregation and self‐assembly of polymerizable amphiphiles in water into condensed ordered ensembles that can be cross‐linked in situ with retention of microstructure. The resulting LLC polymer networks have ordered, nanometer‐scale aqueous and cross‐linked organic domains, which can be used to affect gas solubility and diffusivity through the polymer to help separate molecules via the solution–diffusion mechanism. The open aqueous domains can also be used for pore transport and size exclusion with resolution on the molecular size level. The use and application potential of cross‐linked LLC assemblies as gas separation membranes, selective vapor barrier materials, and water nanofiltration and desalination membranes are presented.

A novel α,ω‐heterofunctional poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) macromonomer possessing methacryloyl and thienyl end groups was prepared by ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide initiated by potassium thienylethoxide and termination of the living PEO ends with methacryloyl chloride. Incorporation of methacryloyl and thienyl groups was confirmed by free‐radical and oxidative polymerization processes, respectively, and by means of 1H NMR analysis.

After decades of efforts by many researchers, we have succeeded in realizing a near‐ideal polymer network. This network, the Tetra network, is made by cross‐end‐coupling of tetra‐arm polymer modules. The mechanical energy dissipation was extremely low (tan δ ≈ 10−4). The macroscopic stress–strain relationship of the Tetra network was in good agreement with that of microscopic elastic blobs. The maximum breaking strength was extremely high (≥27 MPa). These results indicate that the Tetra network is closer to an ideal polymer network than any other conventional model networks. Because the Tetra network can be treated as uniformly packed elastic blobs, it should help apply the knowledge of single polymer chains seamlessly to the design of polymer materials and help further develop the theory of rubber elasticity.

SEC separates complex branched polymers by hydrodynamic volume, rather than by molecular weight or branching characteristics. Equations relating the response of different types of detectors are derived including band broadening, by defining a distribution function N′(M,Vh), the number of chains with molecular weight M and hydrodynamic volume Vh. While the true molecular weight distribution of complex polymers cannot be determined by SEC, irrespective of the detector used, the formalism enables multiple detection SEC data to be processed to both analyze the polymer sample and reveal mechanistic information about polymer synthesis. The formalism also shows how the true weight‐ and number‐average molecular weight, and , can be obtained from correct processing of the hydrodynamic volume distributions.

Microporous films consisting of two‐dimensionally ordered void structures ‐ so‐called honeycomb films ‐ were produced by evaporation of polymer solutions under high humidity. Two types of poly(vinyl cinnamate)s were used: A newly synthesized amphiphilic poly(vinyl cinnamate) and a mixture of a commercial poly(vinyl cinnamate) and an amphiphilic polyion complex. Photo‐crosslinking of the honeycomb structure could be achieved by UV irradiation while completely retaining the film morphology. The crosslinked films showed excellent stability against organic solvents.

Summary: The vapor‐based synthesis and characterization of a reactive polymer, poly[(4‐formyl‐p‐xylylene)‐co‐(p‐xylylene)] ( 1 ), have been reported. The reactive polymer coating enables the immobilization of oligosaccharides via the chemoselective aldehyde‐hydrazide coupling reaction.

Porous polymeric monoliths were prepared via electron beam triggered free radical polymerization of (meth)acrylates. Post‐synthesis functionalization of these supports was accomplished via electron beam initiated free radical graft polymerization of methacryloyl‐substituted NHC precursors. The grafted precursors were converted into the corresponding copper complexes. Cu‐loadings were between 1.3 mg · g−1 and 1.5 mg · g−1. These supported catalysts were used in selected CO hydrosilylation and cyanosilylation reactions using a continuous flow setup.

The catalytic properties of bis(phenoxy‐imine) Zr and Hf complexes incorporating perfluorophenyl groups with methylaluminoxane were investigated. The fluorinated complexes produced far higher‐molecular‐weight polyethylenes and ethylene/propylene copolymers with increased activities compared with the non‐fluorinated congeners. Moreover, the fluorinated complexes displayed a higher incorporation ability for propylene.

Summary: We have developed a new strategy to prepare multiblock polymers and copolymers via one‐ or two‐step polymerization using a polymerizable cyclic trithiocarbonate (CTTC), 4,7‐diphenyl‐[1,3]dithiepane‐2‐thione. CTTC undergoes ring‐opening process to incorporate a trithiocarbonate moiety. The trithiocarbonate moiety in turn, functions as a reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent. Through this mechanism, multiblock polystyrenes and polystyrene‐block‐ poly(butyl acrylate) copolymers containing various narrow polydispersity blocks can be prepared.
