The untwisting of the helical structure of a cholesteric liquid crystal under the action of a magnetic field and a shear flow has been studied theoretically. Both factors can induce the cholesteric–nematic transition independently; however, the difference in the orienting actions of the magnetic field and the shear flow leads to competition between magnetic and hydrodynamic mechanisms of influence on the cholesteric liquid crystal. We have analyzed different orientations of the magnetic field relative to the direction of the flow in the shear plane. In a number of limiting cases, the analytic dependences are obtained for the pitch of the cholesteric helix deformed by the shear flow. The phase diagrams of the cholesteric–nematic transitions and the pitch of the cholesteric helix are calculated for different values of the magnetic field strength and the angle of orientation, the flow velocity gradient, and the reactive parameter. It is shown that the magnetic field stabilizes the orientation of the director in the shear flow and expands the boundaries of orientability of cholesterics. It has been established that the shear flow shifts the critical magnetic field strength of the transition. It is shown that a sequence of reentrant orientational cholesteric–nematic–cholesteric transitions can be induced by rotating the magnetic field in certain intervals of its strength and shear flow velocity gradients.  相似文献

Under a simple shear flow and in a static external magnetic field, the production of defects in the director-aligning regime of nematic liquid crystals has been investigated in terms of the Leslie-Ericksen theory. The equation of motion of the nematic director, which conforms to the driven over-damped sine-Gordon equation, has a soliton solution of the amplitude w. We show that the stationary state with the director uniformly oriented at a Leslie angle is only a metastable state and the potential, which governs the motion of the director, has a nmnber of stable stationary states. For a strong magnetic field, the higher energy barrier between the stable and unstable states leads the director to be locked along the magnetic field direction. However, at the appropriate shear rate and magnetic field the defects, which appear as a stable solitary solution, can be nucleated from a uniformly aligned nematic liquid crystal. We have calculated the stationary travelling velocity of the solitary waves and the distance between a pair of defects.  相似文献

A numerical procedure based on a five-wave MHD model associated with non-ideal, low magnetic Reynolds number MHD flows was developed in the present study for analyzing the flow fields in the MHD generator of a MHD bypass scramjet. The numerical procedure is composed of an entropy conditioned scheme for solving the non-homogeneous Navier-Stokes equations, in conjunction with an SOR method for solving the elliptic equation governing the electrical potential. It was found that a separation would take place near the downstream edge of the second electrode, where the local adverse pressure gradient is large, and the core of the flow field is characterized as a 2-D flow due to the Hartmann effects along the direction of the magnetic field. The electric current lines would be increasingly distorted as the magnetic interactive parameter increases, and even induce an eddy current. Induced eddy current was also found in the different cross-sections along the axial direction, all of these would definitely deteriorate the performance of the MHD generator. The cross-sectional M-shape velocity profile found along the axial direction between the insulating walls is responsible for the formation of the vortex flow at the corner of the insulator cross-section, which, in turn, induces the corner eddy current at the corner. A numerical parametric study was also performed, and the computed performance parameters for the MHD generator suggest that, in order to enhance the performance of MHD generator, the magnetic interaction parameter should be elevated.  相似文献

We investigate the response of prestretched nematic side-chain liquid single-crystal elastomers to superimposed external shear, electric, and magnetic fields of small amplitude. The prestretching direction is oriented perpendicular to the initial nematic director orientation, which enforces director reorientation. Furthermore, the shear plane contains the direction of prestretch. In this case, we obtain a strongly decreased effective shear modulus in the vicinity of the onset and the completion of the enforced director rotation. For the same regions, we find that it becomes comparatively easy to reorient the director by external electric and magnetic fields. These results were derived using conventional elasticity theory and its coupling to relative director-network rotations.  相似文献

Electron spin resonance (E.S.R.) measurements at X-band (3·3 kG) of the spin probe 17β-hydroxy-4,4′-dimethylspiro[5α-androstane-3,2′-oxazolidin]-3′-yloxyl dissolved in the smectic phases (A, C and B) of the mesogen 4,4′-terephthal-bis(butylaniline) (TBBA) are reported. Two types of samples were studied in the dependence on temperature, sample orientation and strength of the magnetic field: (i) glass plate sandwiches with less than 0·1 mm of the mesogen, and (ii) 4 mm i.d. cylindrical glass tube. The sandwich samples were prepared as monodomains with the smectic layers parallel to the glass plates. In these samples the orientation of the layers and of the director is fixed and cannot be reoriented even in a magnetic field of 21 kG. From the angular dependence of the spectrum, the tilt angle, the order parameter and their temperature dependence were determined.

In the cylindrical samples the original orientation of the smectic layers is preserved, and up to about 3 kG the director's orientation with respect to the sample is almost unaffected in all smectic phases. On subjecting the sample to higher fields (~ 20 kG) the director in the smectic C phase will re-align so as to minimize the magnetic energy, subject to the fixed tilt angle. The new alignment is preserved when the strength of the magnetic field is reduced. No such re-alignment is observed in the smectic B phase even after subjecting the sample to a field of 21 kG, in contrast to previous deuterium N.M.R. measurements at 14 kG. It is suggested that in this phase the director is pulled by strong fields but relaxes to its original direction when the magnetic field is brought back to 3·3 kG.  相似文献

The stress propagation in a concentrated attractive colloidal suspension under shear is studied using numerical simulations. The spatial correlations of the intercolloidal stress field are studied and an inertia-like tensor is defined in order to characterize the anisotropic nature of the stress field. It is shown that the colloids remain in a liquid order, the intercolloidal stress is strongly anisotropic. A transition under flow is observed: during a transient regime at low deformation, the stress propagates along the compression direction of the shear, whereas at larger deformations, the stress is organized into layers parallel to the (flow, vorticity) plane.  相似文献

We demonstrate here a method whereby molecular diffusion coefficients may be measured in the presence of the deformational flow field of a rheo-NMR cell. The method, which uses a repetitive CPMG train of rf pulses interspersed with magnetic field gradient pulses, allows the anisotropic diffusion spectrum to be directly probed. We focus on the cylindrical Couette cell, for which the radial, tangential, and axial directions correspond to the hydrodynamic velocity gradient, velocity, and vorticity directions. While ideal Couette flow does not perturb the vorticity direction, it does perturb diffusion measurements for the velocity gradient direction, and to a lesser extent, the velocity direction. We show that with closely spaced gradient pulses operating in a flow-compensating mode, there exists a diffusion limit below which one cannot measure, that scales as T(2)gamma(4), where gamma is the shear rate and T the gradient pulse repetition period. For a typical rheo-NMR cell, and for the more challenging velocity gradient direction, diffusion rates above 10(-12) m(2) s(-1) can be accurately measured (to 1% error) at shear rates up to 3s(-1). We demonstrate the use of the method in measuring the diffusion spectrum of a lyotropic lamellar phase under shear.  相似文献

The end-over-end tumbling dynamics of individual polymers in dilute and semidilute solutions is studied under shear flow by large-scale mesoscale hydrodynamic simulations. End-to-end vector relaxation times are determined along the flow, gradient, and vorticity directions. Along the flow and gradient directions, the correlation functions decay exponentially with sinusoidal modulations at short times. In dilute solution, the decay times of the various directions are very similar. However, in semidilute solutions, the relaxation behaviors are rather different along the various directions, with the longest relaxation time in the vorticity direction and the shortest time in the flow direction. The various relaxation times exhibit a power-law shear-rate dependence with the exponent -?2/3 at high shear rates. Quantitatively, the relaxation times are equal to the tumbling times extracted from cross-correlation functions of fluctuations of radius-of-gyration components along the flow and gradient direction.  相似文献

An expression for the surface excess stress tensor for planar compressible interfaces between rod-like nematic liquid crystals and isotropic viscous fluids is derived using the classical surface excess theory formalism, adapted to capture the intrinsic anisotropy of the nematic orientational ordering. A required step in the theory is to find the actual stress tensor in the three-dimensional interfacial region, which is obtained by a decomposition of the kinematic fields (rate of deformation tensor and director Jaumann derivative) into tangential, normal, and mixed components with respect to the interface. The viscosity coefficients appearing in the surface excess stress tensor are expressed in terms of interfacial and bulk viscosities for planar, constant orientation, flows. The expressions are used to define the three fundamental surface excess Miesowicz shear viscosities, in analogy with the three bulk Miesowicz shear viscosities. The ordering in the magnitudes of the surface excess Miesowicz shear viscosities is shown to depend on the magnitude of the surface scalar nematic order parameter relative to that of the adjoining bulk nematic phase. When the surface scalar order parameter is greater than in the bulk, the classical ordering in terms of magnitudes of the three bulk Miesowicz shear viscosities is recovered. On the other hand, when the surface scalar order parameter is smaller than in the bulk, the classical ordering in terms of magnitudes of the three viscosities does not hold, and inequality transitions are predicted as the surface scalar order parameter increases towards the bulk value. In the general case the optical tensor of a nematic liquid crystal consists of nine nonzero elements, which makes it difficult to calculate light propagation in a liquid-crystal cell. For a two-dimensional (2-D) problem with TM polarization and a parallel liquid-crystal orientation where the molecules are only tilted and not twisted, the full problem can be calculated by using one magnetic field component, thus reducing the problem to a scalar one. This geometry is used to simulate the self-focusing effect which can lead to the generation of spatial optical solitary waves. This self-focusing occurs due to the optical nonlinear effect of field-induced director reorientation. Due to nondiagonal elements of the optical tensor, however, it is expected that the Poynting vector will deviate from the original propagation direction. Our simulations reveal that, in this case, the deviation will not cause the loss of the soliton-like beam propagation regime, but will rather give rise to a transverse undulating behaviour.  相似文献

The flow of a nematic liquid crystal between plane parallel plates, with one plate moving with uniform velocity relative to the other, is discussed. The apparent viscosity, orientation and velocity profiles are computed forp-azoxyanisole as functions of shear rate and magnetic field for symmetric and asymmetric molecular alignment at the plates. For symmetric homeotropic boundary condition, a magnetic field applied along the flow direction exhibits a threshold reminiscent of a Freedericksz transition in the hydrostatic case. In general the apparent viscosity for the asymmetric boundary condition is less than that for the symmetric case.  相似文献

The studied ferronematic is a nematic liquid crystal (ZLI1695) of low negative anisotropy of the diamagnetic susceptibility (χa<0) doped with the magnetic particles Fe3O4. Structural instabilities are interpreted within Burylov and Raikher's theory. The high magnetic fields were oriented perpendicular (Freedericksz transition) or parallel to the initial director. Using capacitance measurements the Freedericksz threshold magnetic field of the ferronematic BFN, and the critical magnetic field Bmax, at which the initial parallel orientation between the director and the magnetic moment of magnetic particles breaks down, have been determined. The values of these quantities have been used to estimate the surface density of the anchoring energy W of liquid crystal molecules on the surface of the magnetic particles. The obtained values indicate a soft anchoring of the liquid crystal on the magnetic particles with a preferred parallel orientation of the magnetic moment of magnetic particles and the director.  相似文献

We have developed the basic equation of the orientational distribution function of oblate spheroidal hematite particles with rotational Brownian motion in a simple shear flow under an applied magnetic field. An oblate spheroidal hematite particle has an important characteristic in that it is magnetized in a direction normal to the particle axis. Since a dilute dispersion is addressed in the present study, we have taken into account only the friction force (torque) whilst neglecting the hydrodynamic interactions among the particles. This basic equation has been solved numerically in order that we may investigate the dependence of the orientational distribution on the magnetic field strength, shear rate and rotational Brownian motion and the relationship between the orientational distribution and the transport coefficients such as viscosity and diffusion coefficient. We found that if the effect of the magnetic field is more dominant, the particle inclines in such a way that the oblate surface aligns in the magnetic field direction. If the Peclet number increases and the effect of the shear flow becomes more dominant, the particle inclines such that the oblate surface tilts in the shear flow direction. The viscosity due to the magnetic torque is shown to increase as the magnetic field increases, since the magnetic torque due to the applied magnetic field becomes the more dominant effect. Moreover, the viscosity increase is shown to be more significant for a larger aspect ratio or for a more oblate hematite particle. We have applied the analysis to the problem of particle sedimentation under gravity in the presence of a magnetic field applied in the sedimentation direction. The particles are found to sediment with the oblate surface aligning more significantly in the sedimentation direction as the applied magnetic field strength increases.  相似文献

A new model is introduced to describe the ordering of solute molecules in nematic liquid crystals where the average electric field gradient experienced by the solute is zero. For such cases the average orientation of the solute correlates with its size and shape. We assume a mean-field potential that depends on the length of the projection of the solute onto the axis parallel to the director and the circumference of the projection onto the plane perpendicular to the director. The model is used to fit the experimental values of the order parameters of a variety of rigid molecules having different symmetries. Very good fits for the order parameters of 1CB and the quadrupolar coupling of 5CB were obtained using the same set of parameters used to fit the rigid solutes. This shows that the contribution to orientational order from size and shape effects can be calculated from a potential with solute-independent parameters.  相似文献

We report on an experimental study of the structures presented by urethane/urea elastomeric films without and with ferromagnetic nanoparticles incorporated. The study is made by using the X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), optical, atomic and magnetic force (MFM) microscopy techniques, and mechanical assays. The structure of the elastomeric matrix is characterized by a distance of 0.46nm between neighboring molecular segments, almost independent on the stretching applied. The shear casting performed in order to obtain the elastomeric films tends to orient the molecules parallel to the flow direction thus introducing anisotropy in the molecular network which is reflected on the values obtained for the orientational order parameter and its increase for the stretched films. In the case of nanoparticles-doped samples, the structure remains nearly unchanged although the local order parameter is clearly larger for the undoped films. NMR experiments evidence modifications in the molecular network local ordering. Micrometer size clusters were observed by MFM for even small concentration of magnetic particles.  相似文献

The system of equations describing the thermal orientation effect in nonchiral liquid crystals, which was observed earlier, is proposed and substantiated. The effect of the director reorientation under the action of the temperature gradient is in many ways analogous to the Freedericksz transition in electric or magnetic fields. The angle of deviation of the director from the initial position is determined by the square of the temperature gradient. The effect is observed for a nematic liquid crystal, initially uniformly oriented, and is not accompanied by macroscopic fluxes of the medium under stationary conditions.  相似文献

In a study of the longitudinal magnetoresistance as a function of the magnetic field in samples of n-type Ge of various thicknesses at 300°K and 77°K, the surface of the samples was oriented parallel to the (001) plane. The directions of the current and the magnetic field were along either the <100> direction or the <110> direction. As the thickness of the samples was reduced, regardless of the orientation of the current and the magnetic field with respect to the crystallographic directions, a decrease was observed in the magnetoresistance over the entire range of magnetic fields studied, 1–280 kOe. The experimental results are attributed to a screening-length size effect and to “sliding” orbits in the enriched surface layers, which lead to an increase in the electron mobility in a strong magnetic field.  相似文献

Unsteady axial flows of second grade fluids with generalized fractional constitutive equation in a circular cylinder are studied. Flows are generated by a time-dependent pressure gradient in the axial direction, an external magnetic field perpendicular on the flow direction and by the cylinder motion. Two different problems are analyzed; one in which the cylinder velocity supports a shock at the instant t = 0 and another in which the cylinder motion is a translation with time-dependent velocity along the axis of cylinder. The generalized fractional constitutive equation of second grade fluid is described by the Caputo time-fractional derivative. Analytical solutions for the velocity field are obtained by using the Laplace transform with respect to time variable and the finite Hankel transform of order zero with respect to the radial coordinate. The influence of the fractional parameter of Caputo derivative on the fluid velocity has been studied by numerical simulations and graphical illustrations. It is found that the fractional fluid flows are faster than the ordinary second grade fluid.  相似文献

The plasma is taken to be composed of singly ionized molecules, free electrons and neutral molecules, each of the component being described by the hydromagnetic equations, modified to take into account the displacement current, existence of free charge in the medium, and the modified current equation without involving the scalar conductivity. The basic equations are linearized and only small amplitude waves are considered. In the absence of any external magnetic field, the transverse and longitudinal modes of oscillation separate out. In the transverse part a coupled plasma oscillation occurs which could be propagated only above a certain critical frequency and in the longitudinal part one extraordinary mode of propagation occurs having a forbidden range of frequencies. When there is an external applied magnetic field, ordinary and extraordinary waves are propagated along the direction of the magnetic field, whereas only ordinary waves are propagated transverse to the magnetic field. The critical frequencies above which these waves are propagated are evaluated and, the possible explanation of this medium like behaviour could be the implicit assumption of conductivity being not a scalar.  相似文献
