Statistics of contact force network in dense granular matter 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We investigate the distribution of contact forces in a static granular system and in annular shear granular flow, using the discrete element method, and considering the influences of both packing fraction and friction coefficient. We find the existence of a critical packing fraction. If the packing fraction is lower than this critical value, all contact forces in granular system vanish. For shear granular flow, the critical packing fraction is significantly smaller than that for static granular system. The ... 相似文献

In this paper, the phenomenon of strain localization, i.e., shear banding, in densely distributed metallic assemblies has been studied. A discrete element methodology for analyzing metallic granular materials has been put forward. In this numerical model, elastoplastic contact, as well as friction, rolling resistance and cohesion between spheres, are explicitly taken into account. The calculations reveal that the shear banding mechanism in dense assemblies can be thought as an instability triggered by initial imperfections. Within a band, the motion, deformation and rearrangement of spheres soften the resistance of the aggregate, as these mechanisms create additional geometric imperfections. Additionally, the simulations showed that the shear-band width does not change conclusively with the friction, rolling resistance and plasticity parameters. However, cohesive strength, even in small amounts, drastically increased the shear-band width. Finally, the shear-band thickness and inclination angles are strongly dependent on the degree of initial imperfection. Whereas for a perfect assembly the shear band inclinations were consistently around 60°, more heterogeneous assemblies lead to shear band angles closer to the continuum mechanics solution, which is 45°. This was found to be in agreement with recent experimental observations. 相似文献

The effect of initial fabric anisotropy produced by sample preparation on the shear behavior of granular soil is investigated by performing discrete element method (DEM) simulations of fourteen biaxial tests in drained conditions. Numerical test specimens are prepared by three means: gravitational deposition, multi-layer compression, and isotropic compression, such that different initial inherent soil fabrics are created. The DEM simulation results show that initial fabric anisotropy exerts a considerable effect on the shear behavior of granular soil, and that the peak stress ratio and peak dilatancy increase with an increase in the fabric index an that is estimated from the contact orientations. The stress–dilatancy relationship is found to be independent of the initial fabric anisotropy. The anisotropy related to the contact orientation and contact normal force accounts for the main contribution to the mobilized friction angle. Also, the occurrence of contractive shear response in an initial shearing stage is accompanied by the most intense particle rearrangement and microstructural reorganization, regardless of the sample preparation method. Furthermore, the uniqueness of the critical state line in e–log p′ and q–p′ plots is observed, suggesting that the influence of initial fabric anisotropy is erased at large shear strains. 相似文献

Mixing behaviors of particles are simulated in a sheared granular flow using differently colored but otherwise identical glass spheres, with five different bottom wall velocities. By DEM simulation, the solid fractions, velocities, velocity fluctuations and granular temperatures are measured. The mixing layer thicknesses are compared with the calculations from a simple diffusion equation using the data of apparent self-diffusion coefficients obtained from the current simulation measurements. The calculations and simulation results showed good agreements, demonstrating that the mixing process of granular materials occurred through the diffusion mechanism. 相似文献

The linearized water-wave radiation problem for the oscillating 2D submerged source in an inviscid shear flow with a free surface is investigated analytically. The vorticity is uniform, with zero velocity at the free surface. Then there will be at most two emitted waves, and no Doppler effects. Exact far-field waves are derived, with radiation conditions applied at infinity. An upstream wave will always exist, whereas the downstream wave exists only when the angular frequency of oscillation exceeds the vorticity. The wave radiation problem is solved also for oscillating vortex and dipoles. The amplitudes and energy fluxes are calculated. 相似文献

The motion of a projectile impact onto a granular target results in both the resistance force exerted on the projectile and rheology of granular media. A horizontal arrangement of cylinder quasistatically and dynamically intruding into granular media under different velocities and angles is simulated using discrete element method. Three distinguished drag force regimes are exhibited, including hydrostatic-like force independent of velocity, viscous force related to velocity, and inertial drag force proportional to the square of velocity. Meanwhile, the influence of penetration angles on drag force is examined for these three regimes, and a force model, which is related to penetration depth and angle, is proposed for quasi-static penetration. Then, flow characteristics of the granular media, such as velocity field, pressure field, packing fraction etc., are traced, and a rheology model of packing fraction and inertial number is established. 相似文献

Through numerical simulations, we investigate the energy harvesting performance of a heaving/pitching foil in shear flow. With two-dimensional Navier–Stokes simulations, we examined the energy harvesting efficiencies of such a system in linear shear flows and compared the results with those in uniform flows. It is found that in low shear rates, the performance of the system in linear shear flow is slightly higher than that in uniform flow, whereas the energy harvesting efficiency is greatly diminished if the shear rate is sufficiently high (this effect is more pronounced in higher frequencies). This is attributed to the effects of linear shear on the vorticity generation and the synchronization between fluid forcing and foil motion – when a strong shear flow is introduced the lift force induced by the leading edge vortex that is in phase with the heaving motion of the foil is diminished. Furthermore, by studying the instability of the wake behind the foil, we confirm that the optimal performance of the foil in linear shear flows is associated with the same physical mechanism that controls the performance of the foil in uniform flows, i.e. the excitation of the most unstable modes in the wake when the oscillation frequency of the foil is close to the frequencies of these modes. 相似文献

The effects of packing configurations on the phase transition of straight granular chute flow with two bottlenecks axe studied. The granular flow shows a dilute- to-dense flow transition when the channel width is varied, accompanied with a peculiar bistable phenomenon. The bistable phenomenon is induced by the initial packing config- uration of particles. When the packing is dense, the initial flux is small and will induce a dense flow. When the packing is loose, the initial flux is large and will induce a di- lute flow. The fabric network of granulax packing is analyzed from a complex network perspective. The degree distribution shows quantitatively different characteristics for the configurations. A two-dimensional (2D) packing clustering coefficient is defined to better quantify the fabric network. 相似文献

The results of an investigation of the dynamics of hard particles and liquid drops in the flow behind a transmitted shock wave are presented. From the equation of motion of a particle in the shock wave, relations for the displacement, velocity and acceleration as functions of time and certain velocity-relaxation parameters taking into account the properties of the gas and the aerodynamic drag of the particles are obtained for unsteady flow around the particles at an acceleration of 103–104 m/s2. It is shown that the velocity-relaxation parameters are universal. Approaches to finding the aerodynamic drag of freely-accelerating bodies from the dynamics of their acceleration after being suddenly exposed to the flow are considered. It is established that under these conditions the drop dynamics observed can be well described in terms of the same velocity-relaxation parameters with account for linear growth of the transverse drop size. All the kinematic functions obtained are confirmed experimentally. 相似文献

When particles are submerged in a shear flow, there are lateral (lift) forces on the particles, and these lateral forces affect the dispersion of the particles very much. Recent literature survey indicates that there are large discrepancies among the results from the previous numerical investigations on this subject. A small computational domain ranging between 20–30 sphere radii was used in all the previous numerical investigations. However, the result from the present study reveals that the value of lift coefficient strongly depends on the size of computational domain. To provide correct numerical data and physical interpretation for the forces on a spherical particle in linear shear flow, accurate numerical computations were performed for 5≤Re≤200 using a computational domain of 101 sphere radii. 相似文献

A three-dimensional study of suspension of drops in simple shear flow has been performed at finite Reynolds numbers. Results are obtained using a finite difference/front tracking method in a periodic domain. The effects of the Reynolds number and the Capillary number are addressed at two volume fractions: 0.195 and 0.34. It is observed that suspensions of deformable drops exhibit a shear-thinning behavior. Similar to the motion of a single drop, drops migrate away from the walls. The effective viscosity, the first and the second normal stress differences oscillate around a mean value in all cases. The first normal stress difference increases with the Capillary number, the Reynolds number and the volume fraction. Results show that drops deform more and orient more in the flow direction as the Capillary number or the volume fraction is increased. Also, the average size of clusters is smaller than for suspension of rigid particles. The radial dependence of the pair distribution function across the channel has been studied. This dependency shows that the tendency to form clusters is reduced as the Capillary number increases or the volume fraction decreases. 相似文献

Dynamics of a solid particle and non-deformable gaseous bubble in viscous fluid are studied analytically and numerically within the framework of creeping flow regime (flow at vanishingly small Reynolds numbers). Equations of motion for the particle and bubble include the consideration of the buoyancy force, Stokes drag force and memory-integral drag force. Exact analytical solutions are obtained and categorised in terms of inclusion (particle or bubble) density with respect to the density of a surrounding fluid. Through the analytical and numerical solutions, the dynamics of solid particle and air bubble in water have been found to behave differently especially at the early stages of motion, whereas some qualitative similarities exist in the long-term asymptotic. 相似文献

An investigation is made of oscillatory phenomenon induced by an exothermic reaction. This oscillatory phenomenon occurs in a very thin mixing layer between two miscible and reacting fluids. A qualitative model based on the interaction among reaction, molecular momentum transfer, molecular heat transfer, molecular mass transfer and forced convective transfer was proposed by Kuroda and Ogawa [1994. Nonlinear waves in a shear flow with a diffusive exothermic reaction and its qualitative reasoning. Chem. Eng. Sci. 49(16), 2699-2708]. It is experimentally shown in the present study that the oscillatory patterns change in the flow direction. In the upstream area where oscillatory patterns are nearly straight stripes, effects of viscosity on those stripes are investigated. In the downstream area where stripes are wavy and disordered, fractal analysis is introduced to investigate the relationship between the transition of oscillatory flow patterns and process factors, i.e. the viscosity ratio, the entire viscosity, flow rate and the flow rate ratio. Fractal analysis is also applied to temperature oscillation, and it is confirmed that the characteristic patterns of oscillation become obscure as the entire viscosity increases. The entire viscosity is an important factor for controlling both oscillatory patterns of flow and temperature in this reactive flow system. 相似文献

The effect of matrix elasticity on the break-up of an isolated Newtonian drop under step shear flow is herein presented. Constant-viscosity, elastic polymer solutions (Boger fluids) were used as matrix phase. Newtonian silicon oils were used as drop phase. Three viscosity ratios were explored (drop/matrix), i.e. 2, 0.6 and 0.04. Following the theoretical analysis of Greco [Greco F (2002) J Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech 107:111–131], the role of elasticity on drop fluid dynamics was quantified according to the value of the parameter p=/em, where is a constitutive relaxation time of the matrix fluid and em is the emulsion time. Different fluids were prepared in order to have p ranging from 0.1 to 10. At all the viscosity ratios explored, break-up was hindered by matrix elasticity. The start-up transient of drop deformation, at high, but sub-critical capillary numbers, showed an overshoot, during which the drop enhanced its orientation toward the flow direction. Both phenomena increase if the p parameter increases. Finally, the non-dimensional pinch-off length and break-up time were also found to increase with p.This paper was presented at the first Annual European Rheology Conference (AERC) held in Guimarães, Portugal, September 11-13, 2003. 相似文献

The pattern of cross stream migration of neutrally buoyant particles in a pressure driven flow depends strongly on the properties of the suspending fluid. These migration effects have been studied by direct numerical simulation in planar flow. Shear thinning has a large effect when the inertia or elasticity is large, but only a small effect when they are small. At moderate Reynolds numbers, shear thinning causes particles to migrate away from the centerline, creating a particle-free zone in the core of the channel, which increases with the amount of shear thinning. In a viscoelastic fluid with shear thinning, particles migrate either toward the centerline or toward the walls, creating an annular particle-free zone at intermediate radii. The simulations also give rise to precise determination of slip velocity distributions in the various cases studied. 相似文献
