For two multivariate normal populations with unequal covariance matrices, a procedure is developed for testing the equality of the mean vectors based on the concept of generalized p-values. The generalized p-values we have developed are functions of the sufficient statistics. The computation of the generalized p-values is discussed and illustrated with an example. Numerical results show that one of our generalized p-value test has a type I error probability not exceeding the nominal level. A formula involving only a finite number of chi-square random variables is provided for computing this generalized p-value. The formula is useful in a Bayesian solution as well. The problem of constructing a confidence region for the difference between the mean vectors is also addressed using the concept of generalized confidence regions. Finally, using the generalized p-value approach, a solution is developed for the heteroscedastic MANOVA problem.  相似文献

We consider the problem of setting bootstrap confidence regions for multivariate parameters based on data depth functions. We prove, under mild regularity conditions, that depth-based bootstrap confidence regions are second-order accurate in the sense that their coverage error is of order n−1, given a random sample of size n. The results hold in general for depth functions of types A and D, which cover as special cases the Tukey depth, the majority depth, and the simplicial depth. A simulation study is also provided to investigate empirically the bootstrap confidence regions constructed using these three depth functions.  相似文献

Diagnostic checking for multivariate parametric models is investigated in this article. A nonparametric Monte Carlo Test (NMCT) procedure is proposed. This Monte Carlo approximation is easy to implement and can automatically make any test procedure scale-invariant even when the test statistic is not scale-invariant. With it we do not need plug-in estimation of the asymptotic covariance matrix that is used to normalize test statistic and then the power performance can be enhanced. The consistency of NMCT approximation is proved. For comparison, we also extend the score type test to one-dimensional cases. NMCT can also be applied to diverse problems such as a classical problem for which we test whether or not certain covariables in linear model has significant impact for response. Although the Wilks lambda, a likelihood ratio test, is a proven powerful test, NMCT outperforms it especially in non-normal cases. Simulations are carried out and an application to a real data set is illustrated.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a new test for the multivariate two-sample problem. The test statistic is the difference of the sum of all the Euclidean interpoint distances between the random variables from the two different samples and one-half of the two corresponding sums of distances of the variables within the same sample. The asymptotic null distribution of the test statistic is derived using the projection method and shown to be the limit of the bootstrap distribution. A simulation study includes the comparison of univariate and multivariate normal distributions for location and dispersion alternatives. For normal location alternatives the new test is shown to have power similar to that of the t- and T2-Test.  相似文献

Let (X,Y) be a Rd×N0-valued random vector where the conditional distribution of Y given X=x is a Poisson distribution with mean m(x). We estimate m by a local polynomial kernel estimate defined by maximizing a localized log-likelihood function. We use this estimate of m(x) to estimate the conditional distribution of Y given X=x by a corresponding Poisson distribution and to construct confidence intervals of level α of Y given X=x. Under mild regularity conditions on m(x) and on the distribution of X we show strong convergence of the integrated L1 distance between Poisson distribution and its estimate. We also demonstrate that the corresponding confidence interval has asymptotically (i.e., for sample size tending to infinity) level α, and that the probability that the length of this confidence interval deviates from the optimal length by more than one converges to zero with the number of samples tending to infinity.  相似文献

We consider the problem of testing whether the common mean of a single n-vector of multivariate normal random variables with known variance and unknown common correlation ρ is zero. We derive the standardized likelihood ratio test for known ρ and explore different ways of proceeding with ρ unknown. We evaluate the performance of the standardized statistic where ρ is replaced with an estimate of ρ and determine the critical value cn that controls the type I error rate for the least favorable ρ in [0,1]. The constant cn increases with n and this procedure has pathological behavior if ρ depends on n and ρn converges to zero at a certain rate. As an alternate approach, we replace ρ with the upper limit of a (1−βn) confidence interval chosen so that cn=c for all n. We determine βn so that the type I error rate is exactly controlled for all ρ in [0,1]. We also investigate a simpler approach where we bound the type I error rate. The former method performs well for all n while the less powerful bound method may be a useful in some settings as a simple approach. The proposed tests can be used in different applications, including within-cluster resampling and combining exchangeable p-values.  相似文献

We propose a new class of rotation invariant and consistent goodness-of-fit tests for multivariate distributions based on Euclidean distance between sample elements. The proposed test applies to any multivariate distribution with finite second moments. In this article we apply the new method for testing multivariate normality when parameters are estimated. The resulting test is affine invariant and consistent against all fixed alternatives. A comparative Monte Carlo study suggests that our test is a powerful competitor to existing tests, and is very sensitive against heavy tailed alternatives.  相似文献

We propose different nonparametric tests for multivariate data and derive their asymptotic distribution for unbalanced designs in which the number of factor levels tends to infinity (large a, small ni case). Quasi gratis, some new parametric multivariate tests suitable for the large a asymptotic case are also obtained. Finite sample performances are investigated and compared in a simulation study. The nonparametric tests are based on separate rankings for the different variables. In the presence of outliers, the proposed nonparametric methods have better power than their parametric counterparts. Application of the new tests is demonstrated using data from plant pathology.  相似文献

We explore a nonparametric version of response surface analysis. Estimates for the location where maximum response occurs are proposed and their asymptotic distribution is investigated. The proposed estimates are based on kernel and local least squares methods. We construct asymptotic confidence regions for the location and include comparisons with the quadratic response surface approach. The methods are illustrated for the two-dimensional case with AIDS incidence data, where the point of maximum incidence is of interest.  相似文献

An exhaustive search as required for traditional variable selection methods is impractical in high dimensional statistical modeling. Thus, to conduct variable selection, various forms of penalized estimators with good statistical and computational properties, have been proposed during the past two decades. The attractive properties of these shrinkage and selection estimators, however, depend critically on the size of regularization which controls model complexity. In this paper, we consider the problem of consistent tuning parameter selection in high dimensional sparse linear regression where the dimension of the predictor vector is larger than the size of the sample. First, we propose a family of high dimensional Bayesian Information Criteria (HBIC), and then investigate the selection consistency, extending the results of the extended Bayesian Information Criterion (EBIC), in Chen and Chen (2008) to ultra-high dimensional situations. Second, we develop a two-step procedure, the SIS+AENET, to conduct variable selection in p>n situations. The consistency of tuning parameter selection is established under fairly mild technical conditions. Simulation studies are presented to confirm theoretical findings, and an empirical example is given to illustrate the use in the internet advertising data.  相似文献

We develop optimal rank-based procedures for testing affine-invariant linear hypotheses on the parameters of a multivariate general linear model with elliptical VARMA errors. We propose a class of optimal procedures that are based either on residual (pseudo-)Mahalanobis signs and ranks, or on absolute interdirections and lift-interdirection ranks, i.e., on hyperplane-based signs and ranks. The Mahalanobis versions of these procedures are strictly affine-invariant, while the hyperplane-based ones are asymptotically affine-invariant. Both versions generalize the univariate signed rank procedures proposed by Hallin and Puri (J. Multivar. Anal. 50 (1994) 175), and are locally asymptotically most stringent under correctly specified radial densities. Their AREs with respect to Gaussian procedures are shown to be convex linear combinations of the AREs obtained in Hallin and Paindaveine (Ann. Statist. 30 (2002) 1103; Bernoulli 8 (2002) 787) for the pure location and purely serial models, respectively. The resulting test statistics are provided under closed form for several important particular cases, including multivariate Durbin-Watson tests, VARMA order identification tests, etc. The key technical result is a multivariate asymptotic linearity result proved in Hallin and Paindaveine (Asymptotic linearity of serial and nonserial multivariate signed rank statistics, submitted).  相似文献

A finite sample performance measure of multivariate location estimators is introduced based on “tail behavior”. The tail performance of multivariate “monotone” location estimators and the halfspace depth based “non-monotone” location estimators including the Tukey halfspace median and multivariate L-estimators is investigated. The connections among the finite sample performance measure, the finite sample breakdown point, and the halfspace depth are revealed. It turns out that estimators with high breakdown point or halfspace depth have “appealing” tail performance. The tail performance of the halfspace median is very appealing and also robust against underlying population distributions, while the tail performance of the sample mean is very sensitive to underlying population distributions. These findings provide new insights into the notions of the halfspace depth and breakdown point and identify the important role of tail behavior as a quantitative measure of robustness in the multivariate location setting.  相似文献

The so-called independent component (IC) model states that the observed p-vector X is generated via X=ΛZ+μ, where μ is a p-vector, Λ is a full-rank matrix, and the centered random vector Z has independent marginals. We consider the problem of testing the null hypothesis H0:μ=0 on the basis of i.i.d. observations X1,…,Xn generated by the symmetric version of the IC model above (for which all ICs have a symmetric distribution about the origin). In the spirit of [M. Hallin, D. Paindaveine, Optimal tests for multivariate location based on interdirections and pseudo-Mahalanobis ranks, Annals of Statistics, 30 (2002), 1103-1133], we develop nonparametric (signed-rank) tests, which are valid without any moment assumption and are, for adequately chosen scores, locally and asymptotically optimal (in the Le Cam sense) at given densities. Our tests are measurable with respect to the marginal signed ranks computed in the collection of null residuals , where is a suitable estimate of Λ. Provided that is affine-equivariant, the proposed tests, unlike the standard marginal signed-rank tests developed in [M.L. Puri, P.K. Sen, Nonparametric Methods in Multivariate Analysis, Wiley & Sons, New York, 1971] or any of their obvious generalizations, are affine-invariant. Local powers and asymptotic relative efficiencies (AREs) with respect to Hotelling’s T2 test are derived. Quite remarkably, when Gaussian scores are used, these AREs are always greater than or equal to one, with equality in the multinormal model only. Finite-sample efficiencies and robustness properties are investigated through a Monte Carlo study.  相似文献

A weighted multivariate signed-rank test is introduced for an analysis of multivariate clustered data. Observations in different clusters may then get different weights. The test provides a robust and efficient alternative to normal theory based methods. Asymptotic theory is developed to find the approximate p-value as well as to calculate the limiting Pitman efficiency of the test. A conditionally distribution-free version of the test is also discussed. The finite-sample behavior of different versions of the test statistic is explored by simulations and the new test is compared to the unweighted and weighted versions of Hotelling’s T2 test and the multivariate spatial sign test introduced in [D. Larocque, J. Nevalainen, H. Oja, A weighted multivariate sign test for cluster-correlated data, Biometrika 94 (2007) 267-283]. Finally, a real data example is used to illustrate the theory.  相似文献

For a general class of unipolar, rotationally symmetric distributions on the multi-dimensional unit spherical surface, a characterization of locally best rotation-invariant test statistics is exploited in the construction of locally best rotation-invariant rank tests for modal location. Allied statistical distributional problems are appraised, and in the light of these assessments, asymptotic relative efficiency of a class of rotation-invariant rank tests (with respect to some of their parametric counterparts) is studied. Finite sample permutational distributional perspectives are also appraised.  相似文献

Nyblom (J. Multivariate Anal. 76 (2001) 294) has derived locally best invariant test for the covariance structure in a multivariate linear model. The class of invariant tests obtained by Nyblom [9] does not coincide with the class of similar tests for this testing set-up. This paper extends some of the results of Nyblom [9] by deriving the locally best similar tests for the covariance structure. Moreover, it develops a saddlepoint approximation to optimal weighted average power similar tests (i.e. tests which maximize a weighted average power).  相似文献

A trace test for the mean parameters of the growth curve model is proposed. It is constructed using the restricted maximum likelihood followed by an estimated likelihood ratio approach. The statistic reduces to the Lawley-Hotelling trace test for the Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) models. Our test statistic is, therefore, a natural extension of the classical trace test to GMANOVA models. We show that the distribution of the test under the null hypothesis does not depend on the unknown covariance matrix Σ. We also show that the distributions under the null and alternative hypotheses can be represented as sums of weighted central and non-central chi-square random variables, respectively. Under the null hypothesis, the Satterthwaite approximation is used to get an approximate critical point. A novel Satterthwaite type approximation is proposed to obtain an approximate power. A simulation study is performed to evaluate the performance of our proposed test and numerical examples are provided as illustrations.  相似文献

In this paper, we suggest an estimating equations based approach to study a general single-index model with a given out-layer link for longitudinal data and treat the classical one as its special case. Within a wide range of bandwidths which is for estimating the inner-layer nonparametric link, the root-n consistency of the estimator of the index can be proved. The estimation efficiency can be achieved even when there is an infinite-dimensional nuisance parameter to be estimated. The performance of the new method is assessed through the comparison with other existing methods and through an application to an epileptic seizure study.  相似文献

This paper proposes a constrained empirical likelihood confidence region for a parameter β0 in the linear errors-in-variables model: Yi=xiτβ0+εi,Xi=xi+ui,(1?i?n), which is constructed by combining the score function corresponding to the squared orthogonal distance with a constrained region of β0. It is shown that the coverage error of the confidence region is of order n−1, and Bartlett corrections can reduce the coverage errors to n−2. An empirical Bartlett correction is given for practical implementation. Simulations show that the proposed confidence region has satisfactory coverage not only for large samples, but also for small to medium samples.  相似文献

Understanding and modeling dependence structures for multivariate extreme values are of interest in a number of application areas. One of the well-known approaches is to investigate the Pickands dependence function. In the bivariate setting, there exist several estimators for estimating the Pickands dependence function which assume known marginal distributions [J. Pickands, Multivariate extreme value distributions, Bull. Internat. Statist. Inst., 49 (1981) 859-878; P. Deheuvels, On the limiting behavior of the Pickands estimator for bivariate extreme-value distributions, Statist. Probab. Lett. 12 (1991) 429-439; P. Hall, N. Tajvidi, Distribution and dependence-function estimation for bivariate extreme-value distributions, Bernoulli 6 (2000) 835-844; P. Capéraà, A.-L. Fougères, C. Genest, A nonparametric estimation procedure for bivariate extreme value copulas, Biometrika 84 (1997) 567-577]. In this paper, we generalize the bivariate results to p-variate multivariate extreme value distributions with p?2. We demonstrate that the proposed estimators are consistent and asymptotically normal as well as have excellent small sample behavior.  相似文献
