Some properties of unsteady unidirectional flows of a fluid of second grade are considered for flows produced by the sudden application of a constant pressure gradient or by the impulsive motion of one or two boundaries. Exact analytical solutions for these flows are obtained and the results are compared with those of a Newtonian fluid. It is found that the stress at the initial time on the stationary boundary for flows generated by the impulsive motion of a boundary is infinite for a Newtonian fluid and is finite for a second grade fluid. Furthermore, it is shown that initially the stress on the stationary boundary, for flows started from rest by sudden application of a constant pressure gradient is zero for a Newtonian fluid and is not zero for a fluid of second grade. The required time to attain the asymptotic value of a second grade fluid is longer than that for a Newtonian fluid. It should be mentioned that the expressions for the flow properties, such as velocity, obtained by the Laplace transform method are exactly the same as the ones obtained for the Couette and Poiseuille flows and those which are constructed by the Fourier method. The solution of the governing equation for flows such as the flow over a plane wall and the Couette flow is in a series form which is slowly convergent for small values of time. To overcome the difficulty in the calculation of the value of the velocity for small values of time, a practical method is given. The other property of unsteady flows of a second grade fluid is that the no-slip boundary condition is sufficient for unsteady flows, but it is not sufficient for steady flows so that an additional condition is needed. In order to discuss the properties of unsteady unidirectional flows of a second grade fluid, some illustrative examples are given.  相似文献

This paper concentrates on the unsteady flows of a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) second grade fluid filling a porous medium. The flow modeling involves modified Darcy's law. Three problems are considered. They are (i) starting flow due to an oscillating edge, (ii) starting flow in a duct of rectangular cross-section oscillating parallel to its length, and (iii) starting flow due to an oscillating pressure gradient. Analytical expressions of velocity field and corresponding tangential stresses are developed. These expressions are found to be significantly affected by the applied magnetic field, permeability of the porous medium and the material parameter of the fluid. Moreover, the influence of pertinent parameters on the flows is delineated and appropriate conclusions are drawn. Finally, a comparison is also made with the existing results in the literature.  相似文献

Based on a modified Darcy's law, Stokes’ first problem was investigated for a second grade fluid in a porous half-space with a heated flat plate. Exact solutions of the velocity and temperature fields were obtained using Fourier sine transforms. In contrast to the classical Stokes’ first problem, there is a steady-state solution for the second grade fluid in the porous half-space, which is a damping exponential function with respect to the distance from the flat plate. The well-known solutions for Newtonian fluids in non-porous or porous half-space appear in limiting cases of our solutions.  相似文献

This paper looks at the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) analysis for transient flow of an Oldroyd-B fluid in a porous medium. The presented analysis takes into account the modified Darcy's law. The flow is induced due to constantly accelerated and oscillating plate. Expressions for the corresponding velocity field and the adequate tangential stress are determined by means of the Fourier sine transform. The influence of various parameters of interest on the velocity and tangential stress has been shown and discussed. A comparison for different kinds of fluids is also provided.  相似文献

The effects of the side walls on the flow in ducts with suction and injection are examined. Three illustrative examples are given. The first example considers the effect of the side walls on the flow over a porous plate. The second example considers the flow between two parallel porous plates and the third example is devoted to the investigation of the flow in a rectangular duct with two porous walls. Exact solution of the governing equation using the no-slip boundary condition and an additional condition are obtained. The expression of the velocity, the volume flux and the vorticity are given. It is found that for large values of the cross-Reynolds number near the suction region the flow for a Newtonian fluid does not satisfy the boundary condition, but it does not behave in the same way for a second grade fluid. Three examples considered show that there are pronounced effects of the side walls on the flows of a second grade fluid in ducts with suction and injection.  相似文献

The effects of the side walls on unsteady flow of a second grade fluid over a plan wall are considered. The solution of the governing equation for velocity is obtained by the sine transform method. This gives a correct result for the shear stress at the bottom wall. The shear stress at the bottom wall is minimum at the middle of the plate and it increases near the side walls. It is shown that the mean thickness of the layer of the liquid over the plate increases with time and the ratio of the mean thickness to the distance between the side walls becomes ultimately 0.2714.  相似文献

Exact analytical solutions for a class of unsteady unidirectional flows of an incompressible second-order fluid are constructed. The flows are generated impulsively from rest by motion of a plate or two plates or by sudden application of a pressure gradient. Expressions for velocity, flux and skin friction are obtained for both large and small times. It is found that large and small times solutions are dependent on the coefficient of viscoelasticity. The solutions corresponding to Newtonian fluids can be easily obtained from those for fluids of second order by letting the viscoelastic parameter to be zero.  相似文献

This paper examines the unsteady two‐dimensional flow of a second‐grade fluid between parallel disks in the presence of an applied magnetic field. The continuity and momentum equations governing the unsteady two‐dimensional flow of a second‐grade fluid are reduced to a single differential equation through similarity transformations. The resulting differential system is computed by a homotopy analysis method. Graphical results are discussed for both suction and blowing cases. In addition, the derived results are compared with the homotopy perturbation solution in a viscous fluid (Math. Probl. Eng., DOI: 10.1155/2009/603916 ). Creeping flow equations of a second grade fluid are considered. Two current approximate symmetry methods and a modified new one are applied to the equations of motion. Approximate symmetries obtained by different methods and the exact symmetries are contrasted. Approximate solutions corresponding to the approximate symmetries are derived for each method. Symmetries and solutions are compared and advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed in detail.  相似文献

The unsteady flow of an incompressible generalized Oldroyd-B fluid induced by a constantly accelerating plate between two side walls perpendicular to the plate has been studied using Fourier sine and Laplace transforms. The obtained solutions for the velocity field and shear stresses, written in terms of the generalized G and R functions, are presented as sum of the similar Newtonian solutions and the corresponding non-Newtonian contributions. For α = β = 1 and λr → λ these solutions are going to the corresponding Newtonian solutions. Furthermore, the solutions for generalized Maxwell fluids as well as those for ordinary Oldroyd-B and Maxwell fluids, performing the same motion, are also obtained as limiting cases of our general solutions. In the absence of the side walls, namely when the distance between the two walls tends to infinity, the solutions corresponding to the motion over an infinite constantly accelerating plate are recovered. For λr → 0 and β → 1, these solutions reduce to the known solutions from the literature. Finally, the effect of the material parameters on the velocity profile is spotlighted by means of the graphical illustrations.  相似文献

The velocity field and the adequate tangential stresses corresponding to the unsteady flow of an Oldroyd-B fluid induced by a constantly accelerating plate between two side walls perpendicular to the plate are established by means of Fourier sine transforms. The solutions corresponding to Maxwell, second grade and Newtonian fluids, performing the same motion, appear as limiting cases of the solutions obtained here. In the absence of the side walls, namely when the distance between walls tends to infinity, all solutions that have been determined reduce to those corresponding to the flow over an infinite plate. Finally, for comparison, the velocity field at the middle of the channel as well as the shear stress on the bottom wall is plotted as a function of y for several values of t and of the material constants. The influence of the side walls on the motion of the fluid is also emphasized by graphical illustrations.  相似文献

In this study, the flow of a fourth order fluid in a porous half space is modeled. By using the modified Darcy's law, the flow over a suddenly moving flat plate is studied numerically. The influence of various parameters of interest on the velocity profile is revealed.  相似文献

An analysis is performed for flow and heat transfer of a steady laminar boundary layer flow of an electrically conducting fluid of second grade in a porous medium subject to a transverse uniform magnetic field past a semi-infinite stretching sheet with power-law surface temperature or power-law surface heat flux. The effects of viscous dissipation, internal heat generation of absorption and work done due to deformation are considered in the energy equation. The variations of surface temperature gradient for the prescribed surface temperature case (PST) and surface temperature for the prescribed heat flux case (PHF) with various parameters are tabulated. The asymptotic expansions of the solutions for large Prandtl number are also given for the two heating conditions. It is shown that, when the Eckert number is large enough, the heat flow may transfer from the fluid to the wall rather than from the wall to the fluid when Eckert number is small. A physical explanation is given for this phenomenon.  相似文献

An exact solution for the three-dimensional flow due to non-coaxial rotation of a porous disk and a second grade fluid at infinity is obtained. It is shown that for uniform suction or uniform blowing at the disk, an asymptotic profile exists for the velocity distribution. The velocity depends on two parameters: one of them is the suction parameter or blowing parameter and the other is the visco-elastic parameter. Furthermore, it is found that when the value of the visco-elastic parameter is fixed, the velocity decreases with an increase in the value of the suction parameter and when the value of the suction parameter is fixed, the velocity increases with an increase in the value of the visco-elastic parameter.  相似文献

A study is made of the unsteady flow engendered in a second-order incompressible, rotating fluid by an infinite porous plate exhibiting non-torsional oscillation of a given frequency. The porous character of the plate and the non-Newtonian effect of the fluid increase the order of the partial differential equation (it increases up to third order). The solution of the initial value problem is obtained by the method of Laplace transform. The effect of material parameters on the flow is given explicitly and several limiting cases are deduced. It is found that a non-Newtonian effect is present in the velocity field for both the unsteady and steady-state cases. Once again for a second-order fluid, it is also found that except for the resonant case the asymptotic steady solution exists for blowing. Furthermore, the structure of the associated boundary layers is determined.  相似文献

The fractional calculus approach in the constitutive relationship model of a generalized second grade fluid is introduced. Exact analytical solutions are obtained for a class of unsteady flows for the generalized second grade fluid with the fractional derivative model between two parallel plates by using the Laplace transform and Fourier transform for fractional calculus. The unsteady flows are generated by the impulsive motion or periodic oscillation of one of the plates. In addition, the solutions of the shear stresses at the plates are also determined. In this paper steady flow of a third grade fluid through porous space is considered. Modified Darcy’s law for third grade fluid in a porous space has been introduced. The governing non-linear equation is first modelled and then solved using homotopy analysis method (HAM). The convergence of the obtained series solution is discussed. The effects of the emerging parameters on the velocity field are seen. It is noted that meaningful solution exists only in the case of suction.  相似文献

In this paper, two different solutions in the form of series of the governing equation of unsteady flow of a second grade fluid are considered. These are series expansions with respect to inverse power of time and a perturbation expansion. Two illustrative examples are given. One of them is the unsteady flow of a second grade fluid over a plane wall suddenly set in motion and the other is the diffusion of a line vortex in a fluid of second grade. It is a remarkable fact that the expression of the series expansion with respect to inverse power of time is exactly in the same form as that of the perturbation expansion. Thus, it is possible to replace a series expansion with respect to inverse power of time with a perturbation expansion.  相似文献
