A total coloring of a graph G is a coloring of all elements of G, i.e., vertices and edges, in such a way that no two adjacent or incident elements receive the same color. Let L(x) be a set of colors assigned to each element x of G. Then a list total coloring of G is a total coloring such that each element x receives a color contained in L(x). The list total coloring problem asks whether G has a list total coloring. In this paper, we first show that the list total coloring problem is NP-complete even for series-parallel graphs. We then give a sufficient condition for a series-parallel graph to have a list total coloring, that is, we prove a theorem that any series-parallel graph G has a list total coloring if |L(v)|min{5,Δ+1} for each vertex v and |L(e)|max{5,d(v)+1,d(w)+1} for each edge e=vw, where Δ is the maximum degree of G and d(v) and d(w) are the degrees of the ends v and w of e, respectively. The theorem implies that any series-parallel graph G has a total coloring with Δ+1 colors if Δ4. We finally present a linear-time algorithm to find a list total coloring of a given series-parallel graph G if G satisfies the sufficient condition.  相似文献

The odd girth of a graph G gives the length of a shortest odd cycle in G. Let ƒ(k, g) denote the smallest n such that there exists a k-regular graph of order n and odd girth g. It is known that ƒ(k, g) ≥ kg/2 and that ƒ(k, g) = kg/2 if k is even. The exact values of ƒ(k, g) are also known if k = 3 or g = 5. Let xe denote the smallest even integer no less than x, δ(g) = (−1)g − 1/2, and s(k) = min {p + q | k = pq, where p and q are both positive integers}. It is proved that if k ≥ 5 and g ≥ 7 are both odd, then [formula] with the exception that ƒ(5, 7) = 20.  相似文献

We present a new condition on the degree sums of a graph that implies the existence of a long cycle. Let c(G) denote the length of a longest cycle in the graph G and let m be any positive integer. Suppose G is a 2-connected graph with vertices x1,…,xn and edge set E that satisfies the property that, for any two integers j and k with j < k, xjxk ? E, d(xi) ? j and d(xk) ? K - 1, we have (1) d(xi) + d(xk ? m if j + k ? n and (2) if j + k < n, either m ? n or d(xj) + d(xk) ? min(K + 1,m). Then c(G) ? min(m, n). This result unifies previous results of J.C. Bermond and M. Las Vergnas, respectively.  相似文献

For a graph G and an integer k ≥ 1, let ςk(G) = dG(vi): {v1, …, vk} is an independent set of vertices in G}. Enomoto proved the following theorem. Let s ≥ 1 and let G be a (s + 2)-connected graph. Then G has a cycle of length ≥ min{|V(G)|, ς2(G) − s} passing through any path of length s. We generalize this result as follows. Let k ≥ 3 and s ≥ 1 and let G be a (k + s − 1)-connected graph. Then G has a cycle of length ≥ min{|V(G)|, − s} passing through any path of length s. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J. Graph Theory 29: 177–184, 1998  相似文献

We prove the following theorem: For a connected noncomplete graph G, let τ(G): = min{dG(u) + dG(v)|dG(u, v) = 2}. Suppose G is a 3-connected noncomplete graph. Then through each edge of G there passes a cycle of length ≥ min{|V(G)|, τ (G) − 1}. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Let G be a graph. For SV(G), let Δk(S) denote the maximum value of the degree sums of the subsets of S of order k. In this paper, we prove the following two results. (1) Let G be a 2-connected graph. If Δ2(S)≥d for every independent set S of order κ(G)+1, then G has a cycle of length at least min{d,|V(G)|}. (2) Let G be a 2-connected graph and X a subset of V(G). If Δ2(S)≥|V(G)| for every independent set S of order κ(X)+1 in G[X], then G has a cycle that includes every vertex of X. This suggests that the degree sum of nonadjacent two vertices is important for guaranteeing the existence of these cycles.  相似文献

Let G be a k-connected graph of order n. For an independent set c, let d(S) be the number of vertices adjacent to at least one vertex of S and > let i(S) be the number of vertices adjacent to at least |S| vertices of S. We prove that if there exists some s, 1 ≤ s ≤ k, such that ΣxiEX d(X\{Xi}) > s(n?1) – k[s/2] – i(X)[(s?1)/2] holds for every independetn set X ={x0, x1 ?xs} of s + 1 vertices, then G is hamiltonian. Several known results, including Fraisse's sufficient condition for hamiltonian graphs, are dervied as corollaries.  相似文献

Let G be a graph with vertex set V(G), and let k ⩾ 1 be an integer. A subset DV(G) is called a k-dominating set if every vertex υV(G)-D has at least k neighbors in D. The k-domination number γ k (G) of G is the minimum cardinality of a k-dominating set in G. If G is a graph with minimum degree δ(G) ⩾ k + 1, then we prove that
$ \gamma _{k + 1} (G) \leqslant \frac{{|V(G)| + \gamma _k (G)}} {2}. $ \gamma _{k + 1} (G) \leqslant \frac{{|V(G)| + \gamma _k (G)}} {2}.   相似文献

 A set AV of the vertices of a graph G=(V,E) is an asteroidal set if for each vertex aA, the set A\{a} is contained in one component of GN[a]. The maximum cardinality of an asteroidal set of G, denoted by an (G), is said to be the asteroidal number of G. We investigate structural properties of graphs of bounded asteroidal number. For every k≥1, an (G)≤k if and only if an (H)≤k for every minimal triangulation H of G. A dominating target is a set D of vertices such that DS is a dominating set of G for every set S such that G[DS] is connected. We show that every graph G has a dominating target with at most an (G) vertices. Finally, a connected graph G has a spanning tree T such that d T (x,y)−d G (x,y)≤3·|D|−1 for every pair x,y of vertices and every dominating target D of G. The following question was raised by Bruce Richter. Let G be a planar, 3‐connected graph that is not a complete graph. Denoting by d(v) the degree of vertex v, is G L‐list colorable for every list assignment L with |L(v)| = min{d(v), 6} for all vV(G)? More generally, we ask for which pairs (r, k) the following question has an affirmative answer. Let r and k be the integers and let G be a K5‐minor‐free r‐connected graph that is not a Gallai tree (i.e. at least one block of G is neither a complete graph nor an odd cycle). Is G L‐list colorable for every list assignment L with |L(v)| = min{d(v), k} for all vV(G)? We investigate this question by considering the components of G[Sk], where Sk: = {vV(G)|d(v)8k} is the set of vertices with small degree in G. We are especially interested in the minimum distance d(Sk) in G between the components of G[Sk]. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 71:18–30, 2012  相似文献

Let G be a graph of order n with connectivity κ≥3 and let α be the independence number of G. Set σ4(G)= min{∑4 i =1 d(x i ):{x 1,x 2,x 3,x 4} is an independent set of G}. In this paper, we will prove that if σ4(G)≥n+2κ, then there exists a longest cycle C of G such that V(GC) is an independent set of G. Furthermore, if the minimum degree of G is at least α, then G is hamiltonian. Received: July 31, 1998?Final version received: October 4, 2000  相似文献

For a simple graph G?=?(𝒱, ?) with vertex-set 𝒱?=?{1,?…?,?n}, let 𝒮(G) be the set of all real symmetric n-by-n matrices whose graph is G. We present terminology linking established as well as new results related to the minimum rank problem, with spectral properties in graph theory. The minimum rank mr(G) of G is the smallest possible rank over all matrices in 𝒮(G). The rank spread r v (G) of G at a vertex v, defined as mr(G)???mr(G???v), can take values ??∈?{0,?1,?2}. In general, distinct vertices in a graph may assume any of the three values. For ??=?0 or 1, there exist graphs with uniform r v (G) (equal to the same integer at each vertex v). We show that only for ??=?0, will a single matrix A in 𝒮(G) determine when a graph has uniform rank spread. Moreover, a graph G, with vertices of rank spread zero or one only, is a λ-core graph for a λ-optimal matrix A in 𝒮(G). We also develop sufficient conditions for a vertex of rank spread zero or two and a necessary condition for a vertex of rank spread two.  相似文献

Let G=(V,E) be a k-regular graph with connectivity κ and edge connectivity λ. G is maximum connected if κ=k, and G is maximum edge connected if λ=k. Moreover, G is super-connected if it is a complete graph, or it is maximum connected and every minimum vertex cut is {x|(v,x)E} for some vertex vV; and G is super-edge-connected if it is maximum edge connected and every minimum edge disconnecting set is {(v,x)|(v,x)E} for some vertex vV. In this paper, we present three schemes for constructing graphs that are super-connected and super-edge-connected. Applying these construction schemes, we can easily discuss the super-connected property and the super-edge-connected property of hypercubes, twisted cubes, crossed cubes, möbius cubes, split-stars, and recursive circulant graphs.  相似文献

The Erdős-Sós conjecture says that a graph G on n vertices and number of edges e(G) > n(k− 1)/2 contains all trees of size k. In this paper we prove a sufficient condition for a graph to contain every tree of size k formulated in terms of the minimum edge degree ζ(G) of a graph G defined as ζ(G) = min{d(u) + d(v) − 2: uvE(G)}. More precisely, we show that a connected graph G with maximum degree Δ(G) ≥ k and minimum edge degree ζ(G) ≥ 2k − 4 contains every tree of k edges if d G (x) + d G (y) ≥ 2k − 4 for all pairs x, y of nonadjacent neighbors of a vertex u of d G (u) ≥ k.  相似文献

A graph G is bridged if every cycle C of length at least 4 has vertices x,y such that dG(x,y) < dC(x,y). A cycle C is isometric if dG(x,y) = dC(x,y) for all x,yV(C). We show that every graph contractible to a graph with girth g has an isometric cycle of length at least g. We use this to show that every minimal cutset S in a bridged graph G induces a connected subgraph. We introduce a “crowning” construction to enlarge bridged graphs. We use this to construct examples showing that for every connected simple graph H with girth at least 6 (including trees), there exists a bridged graph G such that G has a unique minimum cutset S and that G[S] = H. This provides counterexamples to Hahn's conjecture that dG(u,v) ≤ 2 when u and v lie in a minimum cutset in a bridged graph G. We also study the convexity of cutsets in bridged graphs. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 43: 161–170, 2003  相似文献

For 1 ≤ dk, let Kk/d be the graph with vertices 0, 1, …, k ? 1, in which ij if d ≤ |i ? j| ≤ k ? d. The circular chromatic number χc(G) of a graph G is the minimum of those k/d for which G admits a homomorphism to Kk/d. The circular clique number ωc(G) of G is the maximum of those k/d for which Kk/d admits a homomorphism to G. A graph G is circular perfect if for every induced subgraph H of G, we have χc(H) = ωc(H). In this paper, we prove that if G is circular perfect then for every vertex x of G, NG[x] is a perfect graph. Conversely, we prove that if for every vertex x of G, NG[x] is a perfect graph and G ? N[x] is a bipartite graph with no induced P5 (the path with five vertices), then G is a circular perfect graph. In a companion paper, we apply the main result of this paper to prove an analog of Haj?os theorem for circular chromatic number for k/d ≥ 3. Namely, we shall design a few graph operations and prove that for any k/d ≥ 3, starting from the graph Kk/d, one can construct all graphs of circular chromatic number at least k/d by repeatedly applying these graph operations. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Let D be a set of positive integers. The distance graph G(Z,D) with distance set D is the graph with vertex set Z in which two vertices x,y are adjacent if and only if |xy|D. The fractional chromatic number, the chromatic number, and the circular chromatic number of G(Z,D) for various D have been extensively studied recently. In this paper, we investigate the fractional chromatic number, the chromatic number, and the circular chromatic number of the distance graphs with the distance sets of the form Dm,[k,k]={1,2,…,m}−{k,k+1,…,k}, where m, k, and k are natural numbers with mkk. In particular, we completely determine the chromatic number of G(Z,Dm,[2,k]) for arbitrary m, and k.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the problem of determining the maximum of the set of maximum degrees of class two graphs that can be embedded in a surface. For each surface Σ, we define Δ(Σ)=max{Δ(G)| G is a class two graph of maximum degree Δ that can be embedded in Σ}. Hence Vizing's Planar Graph Conjecture can be restated as Δ(Σ)=5 if Σ is a plane. We show that Δ(Σ)=7 if (Σ)=−1 and Δ(Σ)=8 if (Σ){−2,−3}.  相似文献

. In this work we consider finite undirected simple graphs. If G=(V,E) is a graph we denote by α(G) the stability number of G. For any vertex x let N[x] be the union of x and the neighborhood N(x). For each pair of vertices ab of G we associate the set J(a,b) as follows. J(a,b)={uN[a]∩N[b]∣N(u)⊆N[a]∪N[b]}. Given a graph G, its partially squareG * is the graph obtained by adding an edge uv for each pair u,v of vertices of G at distance 2 whenever J(u,v) is not empty. In the case G is a claw-free graph, G * is equal to G 2. If G is k-connected, we cover the vertices of G by at most ⌈α(G *)/k⌉ cycles, where α(G *) is the stability number of the partially square graph of G. On the other hand we consider in G * conditions on the sum of the degrees. Let G be any 2-connected graph and t be any integer (t≥2). If ∑ x S deg G (x)≥|G|, for every t-stable set SV(G) of G * then the vertex set of G can be covered with t−1 cycles. Different corollaries on covering by paths are given.
