Summary The total cross-section for potential scattering in the presence of a strong magnetic field presents singularities and exhibits giant growth (cyclotron resonances) at values of the incident particle energy exactly matching the differences between the initial-and final-state Landau levels. In this paper (in cylindrical coordinates) a higher-order modified Born series has been derived that can be summed at all orders giving a nondivergent total cross-section at the Landau thresholds.  相似文献

Summary Scattering cross-sections, reflection and transmission coefficients are derived for charged-particle potential scattering in the presence of a quantizing constant magnetic field within the Green's function approach. The optical theorem and the limit of the cross-section for vanishing values of the magnetic field have also been obtained. A numerical analysis of the total cross-section for different magnetic-field intensities and values of the screening constant has been performed. The total cross-sections are found to differ significantly from the field-free ones only for magnetic-field intensities and incident particle energies such that only few Landau channels are open. To speed up publication, the authors of this paper have agreed to not receive the proofs for correction.  相似文献

We present a study of the effect of weak anchoring on the transition between C1 and C2 chevron structures in smectic-C liquid crystals. The coexistence of C1 and C2 chevron structures within a single cell causes zigzag defects to occur and may affect the optical characteristics of the cell. By standard Euler-Lagrange minimisation of the total energy of the system, we obtain analytical expressions for the equilibrium director cone angle in the two chevron states. These in turn allow us to compare the total energies of the states and determine the globally stable chevron profile. We show that analytical predictions for the critical transition temperature, which depends on anchoring strength and pretilt angle, are in good agreement with those obtained numerically.  相似文献

The local density of states of the adsorbate-induced two-dimensional electron system is studied in magnetic fields up to B=6 T. Landau quantization is observed and drift states with a width of about the magnetic length are found in agreement with theoretical predictions. At the tails of the Landau levels the states form closed paths indicating localization. These states show the expected energy dependence. A multifractal analysis applied to the data results in a nice parabolic shape of the characteristic f(alpha) spectra, but we find only a slight displacement of the origin from alpha=2.0 for the states in the center of the Landau level.  相似文献

Graphite consists of graphene layers in an AB (Bernal) stacking arrangement. The introduction of defects can reduce the coupling between the top graphene layers and the bulk crystal producing new electronic states that reflect the degree of coupling. We employ low temperature high magnetic field scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) to access these states and study their evolution with the degree of coupling. STS in magnetic field directly probes the dimensionality of electronic states. Thus two-dimensional states produce a discrete series of Landau levels while three-dimensional states form Landau bands providing a clear distinction between completely decoupled top layers and ones that are coupled to the substrate. We show that the completely decoupled layers are characterized by a single sequence of Landau levels with square-root dependence on field and level index indicative of massless Dirac fermions. In contrast weakly coupled bilayers produce special sequences reflecting the degree of coupling, and multilayers produce sequences reflecting the coexistence of massless and massive Dirac fermions. In addition we show that the graphite surface is soft and that an STM tip can be quite invasive when brought too close to the surface and that there is a characteristic tip-sample distance beyond which the effect of sample-tip interaction is negligible.  相似文献

A new approach, which makes the Hamiltonian of the Peierls tight-binding model change into a band matrix, is used to investigate the Landau levels in a AA-stacked bilayer graphene. The interlayer atomic hoppings could induce an energy gap, the asymmetry of the Landau levels about the chemical potential, the random variation in the level spacing, more fourfold degenerate Landau levels at low energy, and the oscillatory Landau levels and the complicated state degeneracies at moderate energy. For the low-energy Landau levels, their dependence on the quantum number and the field strength cannot be well characterized by a simple power law. They exhibit a anomalous oscillation during the variation of the magnetic field. The main features of the magnetoelectronic states are directly reflected in density of states.  相似文献

Recent magneto-transport experiments on ultra-high mobility 2D electron systems in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures have revealed the existence of whole new classes of correlated many-electron states in highly excited Landau levels. These new states, which appear only at extremely low temperatures, are distinctly different from the familiar fractional quantum Hall liquids of the lowest Landau level. Prominent among the recent findings are the discoveries of giant anisotropies in the resistivity near half-filling of the third and higher Landau levels and the observation of re-entrant integer quantum Hall states in the flanks of these same levels. This contribution will survey the present status of this emerging field.  相似文献

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy images on n-InAs(110) exhibit a strong magnetic field dependent contrast on the 50 nm length scale, indicating fluctuations in the density of states of the sample. The contrast is correlated to previously observed Landau oscillations in dI/dV curves. Its origin is a spatial fluctuation of the Landau level energy of 3-4 meV caused by the inhomogeneous distribution of dopant atoms. Besides inducing large-scale fluctuations in the density of states, dopants preserve their ability to scatter electron waves. The resulting wave pattern is found to depend on the magnetic field. It is suggested that the dependence is guided by the condensation of the electronic states on Landau tubes.  相似文献

Electron-electron interactions in half-filled high Landau levels in two-dimensional electron gases in a strong perpendicular magnetic field can lead to states with anisotropic longitudinal resistance. This longitudinal resistance is generally believed to arise from broken rotational invariance, which is indicated by charge density wave order in Hartree-Fock calculations. We use the Hartree-Fock approximation to study the influence of externally tuned Landau level mixing on the formation of interaction-induced states that break rotational invariance in two-dimensional electron and hole systems. We focus on the situation when there are two non-interacting states in the vicinity of the Fermi level and construct a Landau theory to study coupled charge density wave order that can occur as interactions are tuned and the filling or mixing are varied. We consider numerically a specific example where mixing is tuned externally through Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We calculate the phase diagram and find the possibility of ordering involving coupled striped or triangular charge density waves in the two levels. Our results may be relevant to recent transport experiments on quantum Hall nematics in which Landau level mixing plays an important role.  相似文献

We consider the density of states of Schrödinger operators with a uniform magnetic field and a random potential with a Gaussian distribution. We show that the restriction to the states of the first Landau level is equivalent to a scaling limit where one looks at the density of states near to the energy of the first Landau level and simultaneously lets the strength of the coupling to the random potential go to zero. We also consider a different limit where we look at the suitably normalised density of states near to the energy of the first Landau level when the intensity of the magnetic field goes to infinity.  相似文献

The possibility of indirect exchange coupling mediated by Landau electrons bound to magnetic impurities in 2DES is studied here. The importance of the resonance scattering of the Landau electrons with the impurities is emphasized due to its spin selectivity which results in strong spin polarization of the localized Landau states. The bound Landau states act as mediators of the superexchange interaction resulting in an antiferromagnetic interaction between the nuclear spins of the impurities. The coupling constant, between these nuclear spins, J, is presented for the case of a weak scattering limit and found to depend strongly on the ratio of the impurity separation over the magnetic length. Possible applications of these results may include a long-range mechanism for coupling between two nuclear spins to be used as a qubits interaction with a spacing distance of the order of the magnetic length.  相似文献

Surface photovoltage (SPV) spectroscopy has been used for the first time to explore Landau levels of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in modulation doped InP/InGaAs/InP QW in the quantum Hall regime. The technique gives spectroscopically distinct signals from the bulk Landau levels and the edge states. Evolution of the bulk Landau levels and the edge electronic states is investigated at 2.0 K for magnetic field up to 8 T using SPV spectroscopy.  相似文献

We assume the existence of sufficiently localised states, near the edges of each Landau band. We then prove that the Hall conductivity is quantised and the parallel conductivity vanishes, when the filling factor stays close to an integer. The Hall integer is a topological invariant, given by the Landau band index. We also prove that at weak disorder, the localisation length diverges in each Landau band.  相似文献

In analogy to real magnetic field, the pseudo-magnetic field (PMF) induced by inhomogeneous strain can also formthe Landau levels and edge states. In this paper, the transport properties of graphene under inhomogeneous strain arestudied. We find that the Landau levels have non-zero group velocity, and construct one-dimensional conducting channels.In addition, the edge states and the Landau level states in PMF are both fragile under disorder. We also confirm that thebackscattering of these states could be suppressed by applying a real magnetic filed (MF). Therefore, the transmissioncoefficient for each conducting channel can be manipulated by adjusting the MF strength, which indicates the applicationof switching devices.  相似文献

We report the observation of a new fractional quantum Hall state in the second Landau level of a two-dimensional electron gas at the Landau level filling factor ν=2+6/13. We find that the model of noninteracting composite fermions can explain the magnitude of gaps of the prominent 2+1/3 and 2+2/3 states. The same model fails, however, to account for the gaps of the 2+2/5 and the newly observed 2+6/13 states suggesting that these two states are of exotic origin.  相似文献

We derive a simplified thermodynamical formulation for a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a uniform magnetic field, with a large Landau level width and at low temperatures. Our analytic results clearly bring out dependences of magneto-oscillations on the Landau level broadening.1. In contrast with Gaussian broadening, different Landau levels do not overlap in the case of semi-elliptic density of states (Ando and Uemura, 1974), were such a normalization constant needs not to be introduced.  相似文献

Giant monopole and quadrupole states in the relativistic σ-ω model are studied with use of a local Lorentz boost and scaling method. In assuming nuclear matter, those excitation energies are expressed in a simple way in terms of the relativistic Landau parameters, and the expressions are formally very similar to nonrelativistic ones. In the σ-ω model, however, the values of the Landau parameters themselves are dominated by relativistic effects. Unlike the restoring forces depending on the Landau parameters, the mass parameters of these states are little affected by relativity.  相似文献
