A pulse chromatographic method based on the reaction of gaseous dimethylzinc tetrahydrofura nate was developed for the determination of surface hydroxyl groups and/or adsorbed water in solid porous materials. The procedure is rapid and gives results comparable to other methods. Some heterogeneous catalysts and supports have been analyzed.

As shown by IR-spectroscopic studies, pyridine bases interacting with V2O5 and MoO3 supported on MgO form hydrogen bonds with surface hydroxyls and coordinate bonds with V and Mo ions. The interaction of 2,6-dimethylpyridine adsorbed on the surface with oxygen leads to the formation of 6-methylpyridine-2-carboxaldehyde, whose formyl group interacts with surface hydroxyls.

The Ru(dipy) 3 2+ -bromate-malonic acid oscillating system was in vestigated. It has been established that at early stages of the reaction the period of oscillation is about 20 sec and the potential change is about 170 mV; chloride at concentrations hiherg than 10–3M is an inhibitor. The effect of electric fields on the thermal dehydration of amorphous hydrated iron(III) oxide under oxidizing, inert and reducing atmospheres was studied by X-ray diffractometry. In oxidizing and inert atmospheres, the transformation to-Fe2O3 was enhanced by electric fields, especially at the negative electrode. The crystallite size of the product was also greatest at the negative electrode. Both results are explained in terms of the migration of protons to the negative electrode, where they subsequently form water which acts as a nucleating agent for the crystalline phase. In reducing atmospheres the formation of Fe3O4 and FeO at the expense of Fe2O3 is facilitated by electric fields, particularly at the negative electrode. Possible reaction mechanisms are considered, and the role of protons in stabilizing defect-spinel intermediates and products is discussed.
Zusammenfassung Der Einfluß eines elektrischen Feldes auf die thermische Dehydratisierung des amorphen hydratisierten Eisen(III)oxids in oxidierenden, inerten und reduzierenden Atmosphären wurde durch Röntgendiffraktometrie untersucht. In oxidierenden und inerten Atmosphären wurde die Umwandlung zu -Fe2O3 durch elektrische Felder gefördert, besonders an der negativen Elektrode. Die Form der Kristallite des Produkts war ebenfalls an der negativen Elektrode am größten. Beide Ergebnisse werden durch die Proteinwanderung zur negativen Elektrode erklärt, wo diese Wasser bilden, das für die kristalline Phase als Keimbildner fungiert. In reduzierenden Atmosphären wird die Bildung von Fe3O4 und FeO auf Kosten von Fe2O3 durch elektrische Felder besonders an der negativen Elektrode erleichtert. Mögliche Reaktionsmechanismen werden erörtert und die Rolle der Protonen bei der Stabilisierung defekt-spineller Zwischenstufen und Produkte besprochen.

Résumé L'effet d'un champ électrique sur la déshydratation thermique de l'oxyde de fer(III) hydraté amorphe a été étudié par diffractométrie des rayons X, dans des atmosphères oxydante, inerte et réductrice. En atmosphères oxydante et inerte, le champ électrique facilite la transformation en -Fe2O3, en particulier à l'électrode négative. La taille des cristaux formés est également plus élevée à l'électrode négative où il se forme de l'eau qui agit comme agent de nucléation de la phase cristalline. En atmosphère réductrice, le champ électrique facilite la formation de Fe3O4 et FeO, aux dépens de Fe2O3, en particulier à l'électrode négative. On considère les mécanismes de réaction possibles et on discute le rôle des protons sur la stabilisation des produits et des intermédiaires défauts-spinelles.

The addition of gallium is shown to increase Pt dispersity and its stability to deactivation in n-hexane dehydrocyclization, to decrease the rate of n-hexane hydrogenolysis and to increase the selectivity to benzene, apparently, due to the interaction of Pt clusters with surface Ga ions.

The phase equilibria in the total range of component concentrations in the V2O5-Cr2O3 system up to 1000 °C were studied by means of phase powder diffraction and DTA. Two compounds exist in the system: CrVO4, melting incongruently at 860±5 °C, and Cr2V4O13, which decomposes in the solid state at 640±5 °C to CrVO4(s) and V2O5(s). At 645±5 °C, CrVO4 and V2O5 form a eutectic mixture with the CrVO4 content not exceeding 2% mol.
Zusammenfassung Mittels DTA und Pulverdiffraktionsaufnahmen wurde das Phasengleichgewicht des Systems V2O5-Cr2O3 bis 1000 °C im gesamten Konzentrationsbereich untersucht. Innerhalb des Systemes existieren zwei Verbindungen: CrVO4 mit einem inkongruentem Schmelzpunkt bei 860±5 °C und Cr2V4O13, das sich in festem Zustand bei 640±5 °C in CrVO4(s) und V2O5(s) zersetzt. Bei 645±5 °C bilden CrVO4 und V2O5 ein eutektisches Gemisch mit einem maximalen CrVO4-Gehalt von 2 mol%.

The ammoxidation of 3- and 4-picolines has been studied over V2O5–SnO2/–Al2O3 catalysts prepared by surface impregnation technique. Best results were obtained for the generation of cyanopyridines in the temperature range 400–450°C and sub-stoichiometric value with respect to O2. Catalysts that were calcined above 700°C showed no activity.

Pyridine chemisorbed on acid sites of active carbon was displaced by n-butylamine and the displaced amount was measured spectrophotometrically. This amount, supposed to be proportional to the surface concentration of carboxy groups, depends on the chemical pretreatment of active carbon.

The kinetics of n-butylaminolysis of acyl-substituted phenyl tiolbenzoates in acetonitrile at 25°C was studied. From the second order rate constants a Hammett rho value of 1.45 was obtained. The results indicate a proinounced neighboring group effect in the reaction of phenyl thiolsalicylate, providing the first kinetic evidence for intramolecular general acid participation by a hydroxy function in an aprotic solvent.

The effect of the composition of the reaction medium on the rate of aniline oxidation to p-aminophenol by hydrogen peroxide on hemin immobilized on -propylimidazole-modified silica has been studied. Organic solvent additives (alcohols, esters and nitriles) are shown to increase the reaction rate. The observed effect is attributed to the decrease of the medium dielectric constant.

Crystalline silicate of ZSM zeolite structure was synthesized via hydrothermal crystallization at large contents of copper. ESR spectra of Cu2+ ions stabilized in this system are determined by the specific ordering due to the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect of Cu2+ ions with the dx 2–y2 ground state.

Zirconia is well known as a promising support for active metallic centers but it is also by itself an interesting catalyst for reactions involving hydrogen in particular. This paper describes the catalytic properties of ZrO2-obtained in the form of an aerogel-, towards butene-1-isomerization and/or its hydrogenation at low temperature. Activation at 430°C in vacuum led to the best results in cis-trans isomerization in the temperature range of 80–200°C. It is shown that at temperatures 150°C a carbanion mechanism is operating while at higher temperatures the thermodynamic selectivity is attained. Selective poisoning experiments by NH3 or CO2 were carried out in order to identify the catalytic sites for the isomerization of n-butene.

Résumé On a modifié la méthode différentielle pour le calcul des paramètres cinétiques des réactions de décomposition thermique du type: A(s) B(s) + C(g), en utilisant les données de l'analyse thermodifférentielle. En effectuant le calcul des paramètres cinétiques des réactions de déshydratation de l'oxalate de calcium monohydraté et de décomposition du carbonate de calcium on obtient des résultats qui concordent d'une manière satisfaisante avec ceux obtenus par d'autres méthodes.
A modification of the differential method is presented in order to evaluate the kinetic parameters of thermal decomposition reactions of the type A s B s + +Cg, using differential thermal analysis (DTA) data. The kinetic parameters calculated for the dehydration and decomposition of calcium oxalate and carbonate agree satisfactorily with those mentioned in the literature.

Zusammenfassung Es wird über eine Abänderung der Differentialmethode zur Errechnung der kinetischen Parameter von thermischen Zersetzungsreaktionen des Typs A(s) B(s) + C(g) mit Hilfe von differentialthermoanalytischen Daten berichtet. Die am Beispiel der Dehydratation des Calciumoxalat-Monohydrats und der Zersetzung des Calciumcarbonats erhaltenen Ergebnisse der auf angegebene Weise durchgeführten kinetischen Berechnungen stimmen gut mit den nach anderen Methoden erhaltenen Resultaten überein.

Aged and fresh samples of sodium metaperiodate are subjected to thermal decomposition studies in air by TG, DTG and DTA techniques. The kinetic parameters for their decomposition have been evaluated by weighted least squares method using equations of Coats-Redfern, Horowitz-Metzger and Freeman-Carroll. The results indicate that, within the limits of experimental error, ageing did not change the E* values considerably.

Alkaline fading of bromophenol blue was chosen for the investigation of the effect of heating rate on the activation energies derived from the dynamic kinetic method. Freeman and Carroll's treatment was adopted to compute the activation energies from experimental data taken with three heating rates: namely 1°, 0.5° and 0.25°/min. It was found that the activation energy increases as the heating rate decreases. This is attributed to the non-equilibrium conditions. By extrapolating to zero heating rate, the activation energy obtained is comparable to that obtained via classical isothermal kinetics.
Zusammenfassung Die in alkalischem Medium erfolgende Entfärbung von Bromphenolblau wurde zum Studium des Einflusses der Aufheizgeschwindigkeit auf die nach der dynamischen kinetischen Methode erhaltenen Aktivierungsenergien herangezogen. Das Verfahren von Freeman und Carroll wurde zur Berechnung der Aktivierungsenergien aus Versuchsdaten, welche bei drei Aufheizgeschwindigkeiten, nämlich 1°, 0.5° und 0.25°/min erhalten worden waren, verwendet. Es wurde festgestellt, daß die Aktivierungsenergie mit abnehmender Aufheizgeschwindigkeit zunimmt. Der Grund hierfür wird den Nicht-Gleichgewichtsbedingungen zugeschrieben. Wird auf Aufheizgeschwindigkeit=0 extrapoliert, so ist die erhaltene Aktivierungsenergie mit der nach klassischer isothermer Kinetik erhaltenen vergleichbar.

Résumé On a choisi la décoloration du bleu de bromophénol en milieu alcalin pour étudier l'influence de la vitesse de chauffage sur l'énergie d'activation calculée à partir des données fournies par une méthode d'étude cinétique dynamique. On a adopté la méthode de Freeman et Carroll pour calculer les énergies d'activation à partir des données expérimentales obtenues avec trois vitesses de chauffage, à savoir 1°, 0.5° et 0.25°/min. On montre que l'énergie d'activation augmente quand la vitesse de chauffage diminue. On attribue ce phénomène aux conditions de non-équilibre. En extrapolant pour une vitesse de chauffage nulle, on obtient une énergie d'activation comparable à celle calculée par la méthode classique en cinétique isotherme.
