Engineering silicon oxide surfaces using self-assembled monolayers   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Although a molecular monolayer is only a few nanometers thick it can completely change the properties of a surface. Molecular monolayers can be readily prepared using the Langmuir-Blodgett methodology or by chemisorption on metal and oxide surfaces. This Review focuses on the use of chemisorbed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) as a platform for the functionalization of silicon oxide surfaces. The controlled organization of molecules and molecular assemblies on silicon oxide will have a prominent place in "bottom-up" nanofabrication, which could revolutionize fields such as nanoelectronics and biotechnology in the near future. In recent years, self-assembled monolayers on silicon oxide have reached a high level of sophistication and have been combined with various lithographic patterning methods to develop new nanofabrication protocols and biological arrays. Nanoscale control over surface properties is of paramount importance to advance from 2D patterning to 3D fabrication.  相似文献

Monolayers of beta-cyclodextrin host molecules have been prepared on SiO2 surfaces. An ordered and stable cyano-terminated monolayer was modified in three consecutive surface reactions. First, the cyanide groups were reduced to their corresponding free amines using Red Al as a reducing agent. Second, 1,4-phenylene diisothiocyanate was used to react with the amine monolayer where it acts as a linking molecule, exposing isothiocyanates that can be derivatized further. Finally, per-6-amino beta-cyclodextrin was reacted with these isothiocyanate functions to yield a monolayer exposing beta-cyclodextrin. All monolayers were characterized by contact angle measurements, ellipsometric thickness measurements, Brewster angle Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, which indicate the formation of a densely packed cyclodextrin surface. It was demonstrated that the beta-cyclodextrin monolayer could bind suitable guest molecules in a reversible manner. A fluorescent molecule (1), equipped with two adamantyl groups for complexation, was adsorbed onto the host monolayer from solution to form a monolayer of guest molecules. Subsequently, the guest molecules were desorbed from the surface by competition with increasing beta-cyclodextrin concentration in solution. The data were fitted using a model. An intrinsic binding constant of 3.3 +/- 1 x 10(5) M(-1) was obtained, which corresponds well to previously obtained results with a divalent guest molecule on beta-cyclodextrin monolayers on gold. In addition, the number of guest molecules bound to the host surface was determined, and a surface coverage of ca. 30% was found.  相似文献

This work presents the first alkyl monolayers covalently bound on HF-treated silicon carbide surfaces (SiC) through thermal reaction with 1-alkenes. Treatment of SiC with diluted aqueous HF solutions removes the native oxide layer (SiO2) and provides a reactive hydroxyl-covered surface. Very hydrophobic methyl-terminated surfaces (water contact angle theta = 107 degrees ) are obtained on flat SiC, whereas attachment of omega-functionalized 1-alkenes also yields well-defined functionalized surfaces. Infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements are used to characterize the monolayers and show their covalent attachment. The resulting surfaces are shown to be extremely stable under harsh acidic conditions (e.g., no change in theta after 4 h in 2 M HCl at 90 degrees C), while their stability in alkaline conditions (pH = 11, 60 degrees C) also supersedes that of analogous monolayers such as those on Au, Si, and SiO2. These results are very promising for applications involving functionalized silicon carbide.  相似文献

A new class of protein-resistant film based on N-substituted glycine derivatives is described. Pulsed plasma deposited poly(N-acryloylsarcosine methyl ester) coatings are shown to be resistant toward the adsorption of fibrinogen and lysozyme. Deposition and UV irradiation of the polymer through a masked grid are found to be effective ways for generating negative and positive image protein arrays, respectively, onto a range of different substrate materials.  相似文献

Pulsed plasma polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide leads to the deposition of thermoresponsive films. The reversible (switching) behavior of these poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) surfaces has been exemplified by screening the adsorption of fibrinogen and fluorescein isothiocyanate labeled bovine serum albumin proteins by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and fluorescence microscopy at low and elevated temperatures.  相似文献

This paper describes the generation of reversible patterns of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold and silicon oxide surfaces via the formation of reversible covalent bonds. The reactions of (patterned) SAMs of 11-amino-1-undecanethiol (11-AUT) with propanal, pentanal, decanal, or terephthaldialdehyde result in dense imine monolayers. The regeneration of these imine monolayers to the 11-AUT monolayer is obtained by hydrolysis at pH 3. The (patterned) monolayers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, contact angle and electrochemical measurements, and atomic force microscopy. Imines can also be formed by microcontact printing of amines on terephthaldialdehyde-terminated substrates. Lucifer Yellow ethylenediamine was employed as a fluorescent amine-containing marker to visualize the reversible covalent patterning on a terephthaldialdehyde-terminated glass surface by confocal microscopy. These experiments demonstrate that with reversible covalent chemistry it is possible to print and erase chemical patterns on surfaces repeatedly.  相似文献

The electrochemical behavior of Si--C linked organic monolayers is studied in electrolyte-insulator-Si devices, under conditions normally encountered in potentiometric biosensors, to gain fundamental knowledge on the behavior of such Si electrodes under practical conditions. This is done via titration experiments, Mott-Schottky data analysis, and data fitting using a site-binding model. The results are compared with those of native SiO(2) layers and native SiO(2) layers modified with hexamethyldisilazane. All samples display pH sensitivity. The number of Si--OH groups on the alkylated samples is calculated to be less than 0.7 % of that of a pure SiO(2) insulator, which still causes a pH sensitivity of approximately 25 mV per pH unit in the pH range: 4-7. The alkylated samples hardly suffer from response changes during up- and down-going titrations, which indicates that very little oxide is additionally formed during the measurements. The pK(a) values of all samples with monolayers (4.0-4.4) are lower than that of native SiO(2) (6.0). The long-term drift (of approximately 1 mV h(-1)) is moderate. The results indicate that biosensors composed of alkylated Si substrates are feasible if a cross-sensitivity towards pH in the sensor signal is taken into account.  相似文献

This paper introduces a new substrate for reverse-phase protein microarray applications based on macroporous silicon. A key feature of the microarray substrate is the vastly surface enlarging properties of the porous silicon, which simultaneously offers highly confined microarray spots. The proof of principle of the reverse array concept was demonstrated in the detection of different levels of cyclin E, a possible cancer biomarker candidate which regulates G1-S transition and correlates with poor prognosis in different types of human cancers. The substrate properties were studied performing analysis of total cyclin E expression in human colon cancer cell lines Hct116 and SW480. The absence of unspecific binding and good microarray quality was demonstrated. In order to verify the performance of the 3-D textured macroporous surface for complex biological samples, lysates of the human tissue spiked to different levels with cell extract overproducing cyclin E (Hct116) were arrayed on the chip surface. The samples were spotted in a noncontact mode in 100 pL droplets with spots sizes ranged between 50 and 70 mum and spot-to-spot center distances 100 mum, allowing microarray spot densities up to 14 000 spots per cm(2). The different sample types of increasing complexities did not have any impact on the spot intensities recorded and the protein spots showed good homogeneity and reproducibility over the recorded microarrays. The data demonstrate the potential use of macroporous silicon as a substrate for quantitative determination of a cancer biomarker cyclin E in tissue lysates.  相似文献

Herein, the influence of silicon surface modification via Si-C(n)H(2n+1) (n=10,12,16,22) monolayer-based devices on p-type 100 and n-type 100 silicon is studied by forming MIS (metal-insulator-semiconductor) diodes using a mercury probe. From current density-voltage (J-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements, the relevant parameters describing the electrical behavior of these diodes are derived, such as the diode ideality factor, the effective barrier height, the flatband voltage, the barrier height, the monolayer dielectric constant, the tunneling attenuation factor, and the fixed charge density (Nf). It is shown that the J-V behavior of our MIS structures could be precisely tuned via the monolayer thickness. The use of n-type silicon resulted in lower diode ideality factors as compared to p-type silicon. A similar flatband voltage, independent of monolayer thickness, was found, indicating similar properties for all silicon-monolayer interfaces. An exception was the C10-based monolayer device on p-type silicon. Furthermore, low values of N(f) were found for monolayers on p-type silicon (approximately 6 x 10(11) cm(-2)). These results suggest that Si--C linked monolayers on flat silicon may be a viable material for future electronic devices.  相似文献

A new infrared spectroscopic measurement involving multiple transmissions and reflections for molecular monolayers adsorbed on silicon surfaces has been established. Compared to the well-known multiple internal reflection (MIR) method, the distinctive advantage of multiple transmission-reflection infrared spectroscopy (MTR-IR) is the convenient measurement using standard silicon wafers as samples, while in the MIR setup special fabrication of geometric shapes such as 45 degrees bevel cuts on an attenuated total reflection silicon crystal is needed. Both p- and s-polarized spectra can be obtained reproducibly with the same order of sensitivity as by the MIR spectroscopy. Optimal conditions for spectral acquisition have been obtained from theoretical calculations. The ability of this methodology to gather high quality infrared spectra of adsorbed monolayers is demonstrated and the analysis of the surface packing and molecular orientation is discussed.  相似文献

Electron transfer (ET) kinetics through alkyl monolayers, formed on n-type Si(111) surface by the direct reaction of alkylmagnesium bromide (n-CnH2n+1MgBr, n=2, 6, 10, and 15) with hydrogen-terminated Si(111), was investigated in acetonitrile (MeCN) with anthraquinone (AQ) as the electrochemical probe. Cyclic voltammetric measurements indicate that the ability of the monolayer to block interfacial electron transfer increases with increasing alkyl chain length. In particular, the voltammetric behavior changes from non-rectifying (i.e., chemically reversible redox couple), to rectifying (i.e., diode-like when the reverse wave is pushed into the gap) with increasing chain length. The dependence of the logarithm of the electron transfer rate constant as a function on the number of carbons in the alkyl chain is not consistent with electron tunneling through the full thickness of the film. In fact, the measured constant, 0.05 ± 0.03 per methylene, is much smaller than the well-established tunneling constant, ∼1.0/CH2 in the closely packed alkanethiol monolayers on gold suggesting permeation of the AQ into the film.  相似文献

We compare two routes for creating protein adsorption-resistant self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) by chemical modification of silicon surfaces with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) oligomeric derivatives. The first route involves the assembly of 2-methyl[(polyethyleneoxy)propyl]trichlorosilane (Cl3SiMPEO) films onto oxidized silicon surfaces (OH-SiO(x)) either by a liquid-phase process at room temperature or by a gas-phase process at 423 K, producing Si-O-Si bonds between the substrate and the organic layer. The second pathway makes use of the assembly of poly(ethylene glycol methyl ether) (MPEG) films onto hydrogen-passivated silicon surfaces (H-Si) using a liquid-phase process at 353 or 423 K, leading to the formation of Si-O-C bonds between the substrate and the organic layer. Structural investigation by X-ray reflectometry (XRR) reveals that the thickness and surface densities of the grafted PEO monolayers strongly depend on experimental conditions such as temperature and grafting time. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) shows that very smooth and homogeneous monolayers can be obtained with average roughnesses close to those measured on the corresponding bare substrates. Finally, the antifouling properties of the modified silicon surfaces were evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), using a membrane protein (P.69 antigen) as model protein. Both types of PEO monolayers exhibit excellent protein repellency, as soon as the grafting density is equal to or higher than 1.7 chains/nm2.  相似文献

N-Hydroxysuccinimide (NHS)-ester-terminated monolayers were covalently attached in one step onto silicon using visible light. This mild photochemical attachment, starting from omega-NHS-functionalized 1-alkenes, yields a clean and flat monolayer-modified silicon surface and allows a mild and rapid functionalization of the surface by substitution of the NHS-ester moieties with amines at room temperature. Using a combination of analytical techniques (infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), extensive X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in combination with density functional theory calculations of the XPS chemical shifts of the carbon atoms, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and static contact angle measurements), it was shown that the NHS-ester groups were attached fully intact onto the surface. The surface reactivity of the NHS-ester moieties toward amines was qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated via the reaction with para-trifluoromethyl benzylamine and biotin hydrazide.  相似文献

The interaction of proteins with semiconductors such as silicon and diamond is of great interest for applications such as electronic biosensing. We have investigated the use of covalently bound oligo(ethylene glycol), EG, monolayers on diamond and silicon to minimize nonspecific protein adsorption. Protein adsorption was monitored by fluorescence scanning as a function of the length of the ethylene glycol chain (EG3 through EG6) and the terminal functional group (methyl- versus hydroxyl-terminated EG3 monolayer). More quantitative measurements were made by eluting adsorbed avidin from the surface and measuring the intensity of fluorescence in the solution. The attachment chemistry of the tri(ethylene glycol) molecules and monolayer orientation was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Improvement in the selectivity of surfaces modified with EG functionality was demonstrated in two model biosensing assays. We find that high-quality EG monolayers are formed on silicon and diamond and that these EG3 monolayers are as effective as EG3 self-assembled monolayers on gold at resisting nonspecific avidin adsorption. These results show promise for use of silicon and diamond materials in many potential applications such as biosensing and medical implants.  相似文献

The contact angle of water has been measured on a series of self-assembled monolayers (SAM) on thermally evaporated and sputter coated silver surfaces. It is found that micropatterning the surface using nanosphere lithography leads to large increases in the contact angle and generates superhydrophobic surfaces with contact angles >150 degrees. The type of functional groups on the SAMs, the metal island size, and the metal island thickness all contribute to the measured contact angle. The maximum contact angle found was 161 degrees for a fluorinated alkanethiol on 80 nm thick silver islands.  相似文献

In this work, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) was applied to probe the orientation of cytochrome c (Cyt-c) on gold nanohole arrays functionalized with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkane thiols with positively (-NH2) and negatively (-COOH) charged terminal groups. Square grid gold nanohole arrays with a nanohole diameter of 270 nm and a grating of 350 nm were fabricated by electron beam lithography (EBL) and were used as the SERS substrates. The SERS intensities of the nontotally symmetric mode (B(1g) mode nu(11)) and the totally symmetric mode (A(1g) mode nu(4)) and their ratios were used to determine the orientation of Cyt-c on surfaces. The results indicate that the heme group is close and perpendicular to the negatively charged surface but is far from and oriented at an angle to the positively charged surface. Cyt-c has a random or more flat orientation on the bare Au nanoholes surface.  相似文献

Reproducibly smooth amino-functionalized surfaces were obtained by deposition of aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) at the vapor/solid interface. Characteristics of these amino-functionalized surfaces were evaluated based on atomic force microscopy, water contact angle measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed that APTMS modified surfaces are very homogeneous and the chemical reactivity of modified surfaces can be ensured with high free amino content. Furthermore, for the purpose of tailoring the wettability of silicon surface, dual self-assembled films were achieved by performing reaction between amino-functionalized surface and n-alkanoic acids with different chain length. The wettability of the self-assembled films can be adjusted with altering the hydrocarbon chain length of alkanoic acids. Moreover, cooperation of dual self-assembled films with surface roughening, superhydrophobic surfaces with CA larger than 153 degrees were obtained. Thus, the wettability of modified surfaces can be altered greatly with changing hydrocarbon chain length of self-assembled films.  相似文献

The redox activity of a ferrocenyl monolayer grafted on an n-type Si111 substrate was investigated by scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) in conditions where the substrate plays the role of an insulator. This approach permits the differentiation between the different possible electron-transfer and mass-transport pathways occurring at the interface. As an exciting result, the thin ferrocenyl monolayer behaves like a purely conducting material, highlighting very fast electron communication between immobilized ferrocenyl headgroups in a 2D-like charge-transport mechanism.  相似文献

Substrates of aluminum (Al) deposited by physical vapor deposition onto Si substrates and then chemically reacted with perfluorodecylphosphonic acid (PFDPAlSi), decylphosphonic acid (DPAlSi), and octadecylphosphonic acid (ODPAlSi) were studied by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and friction force microscopy, a derivative of AFM, to characterize their surface chemical composition, roughness, and micro-/nanotribological properties. XPS analysis confirmed the presence of perfluorinated and nonperfluorinated alkylphosphonate molecules on the PFDPAlSi, DPAlSi, and ODPAlSi. The sessile drop static contact angle of pure water on PFDPAlSi was typically more than 130 degrees and on DPAlSi and ODPAlSi typically more than 125 degrees indicating that all phosphonic acid reacted AlSi samples were very hydrophobic. The surface roughness for PFDPAlSi, DPAlSi, ODPAlSi, and bare AlSi was approximately 35 nm as determined by AFM. The surface energy for PFDPAlSi was determined to be approximately 11 mNm by the Zisman plot method compared to 21 and 20 mNm for DPAlSi and ODPAlSi, respectively. Tribology involves the measure of lateral forces due to friction and adhesion between two surfaces. Friction, adhesion, and wear play important roles in the performance of micro-/nanoelectromechanical systems. PFDPAlSi gave the lowest adhesion and coefficient of friction values while bare AlSi gave the highest. The adhesion and coefficient of friction values for DPAlSi and ODPAlSi were comparable.  相似文献
