I present a tractable theory for the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) of magnons. The low-energy transition operator is written as a product of local spin operators and fundamental x-ray absorption spectral functions. This leads to simple selection rules. The scattering cross section linear (quadratic) in spin operators is proportional to the fundamental magnetic circular (linear) dichroic spectral function. RIXS is a novel tool to measure magnetic quasiparticles (magnons) and the incoherent spectral weight, as well as multiple magnons up to very high energy losses, in small samples, thin films, and multilayers, complementary to neutron scattering.  相似文献

Recently a new effect in the Raman scattering of x-ray radiation has been predicted theoretically and discovered in experiments, the effect of restoration of the selection rules for the scattering tensor under strong electron-vibrational interaction. We propose a fairly simple model for describing this effect, a model that allows for an exact solution and takes into account the real vibrational structure of the molecule and electron-vibrational interaction. We report a study of electronic excitations in manganites exhibiting a range of ground states, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Mn K edge. Excitations with temperature dependent changes correlated with the magnetism were observed as high as 10 eV. By calculating Wannier functions, and finite-q response functions, we associate this dependence with intersite d-d excitations. The calculated dynamical structure factor is found to be similar to the RIXS spectra.  相似文献

The five independent elastic moduli of single-crystalline hcp cobalt were determined by inelastic x-ray scattering to 39 GPa and compared to ultrasonic measurements and first principles calculations. In general the agreement is good, in particular, for the evolution of the longitudinal sound velocity in the a-c plane. This confirms the calculations, suggesting that a similar evolution is valid for hcp iron, the main constituent of the Earth's inner core, up to the highest investigated pressure. Our results represent an important benchmark to further refine ab initio calculations.  相似文献

The effect of many-particle and relativistic effects on the absolute values and the shape of the doubly differential cross section of resonance inelastic scattering of a linearly polarized x-ray photon by the free xenon atom in the energy region of the K ionization threshold is studied theoretically. The evolution of the spatially extended structure of the scattering cross section in the Kα,β structure of the x-ray emission spectrum of the xenon atom is demonstrated. The calculations were performed in the dipole approximation for the anomalous dispersion part of the total amplitude of probability of inelastic scattering and in the impulse approximation for the contact part of this amplitude. The radial relaxation of electronic shells, the spin-orbit splitting, the double excitation/ionization of the ground atomic state, as well as the Auger and radiative decays of the atomic core vacancies being formed were taken into account. In constructing the probability amplitude of the process, the relativistic effects were taken into account as a passage from the nonrelativistic Hartree-Fock wave functions to the relativistic Dirac-Hartree-Fock wave functions of the one-particle scattering states and as the passage (for the radiative transition amplitudes) to the relativistic form of the operator of the photon-atom interaction. The calculation results are predictive in character and, at the incident photon energy 34.42 keV, agree well with the results of the synchrotron experiment.  相似文献

A hybrid model of lepton-nuclear interactions is constructed; energy loss spectra and average muon and tau lepton energy losses in inelastic scattering off nuclei in rock and water in the energy range 102–109 GeV are calculated in the framework of this model. Charge asymmetry of scattering due to processes with weak neutral current is discussed. Comparison with calculations in the framework of other models is presented.  相似文献

We have investigated the lattice dynamics of a wurtzite GaN single crystal by inelastic x-ray scattering. Several dispersion branches and phonons at high-symmetry points have been measured, including the two zone-center Raman- and infrared-inactive silent modes. The experiments have been complemented by ab initio calculations. They are in very good agreement with our measurements, not only for phonon energies, but also for scattering intensities, thus validating the correctness of the eigenvectors. Other phenomenological and ab initio theories exhibit significant differences.  相似文献

Predictions are made for the momentum- and carrier-dependent degradation of the Mott gap upon doping in high-T(c) cuprates as would be observed in Cu K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The two-dimensional Hubbard model with second- and third-nearest-neighbor hopping terms has been studied by numerical exact diagonalization. Special emphasis is placed on the particle-hole asymmetry of the Mott gap excitations. We argue that the Mott gap excitations observed by RIXS are significantly influenced by the interaction between charge carriers and antiferromagnetic correlations.  相似文献

Achieving comprehensive information on thin film lattice dynamics so far has eluded well established spectroscopic techniques. We demonstrate here the novel application of grazing incidence inelastic x-ray scattering combined with ab initio calculations to determine the complete elastic stiffness tensor, the acoustic and low-energy optic phonon dispersion relations of thin wurtzite indium nitride films. Indium nitride is an especially relevant example, due to the technological interest for optoelectronic and solar cell applications in combination with other group III nitrides.  相似文献

We report a new type of peaklike structure observed in the tail of the dynamic structure factor of simple metals, measured by inelastic x-ray scattering. Based on the momentum-transfer dependence of the energy position and the intensity of this structure, it has been unambiguously attributed to intrinsic plasmon-plasmon excitations, an electronic correlation effect that was theoretically predicted by many-body perturbation theory of the homogeneous-electron-gas model beyond the random-phase approximation. This signature appears to be largely unaffected by electron-ion interaction effects. Thus a structure that is primarily caused by correlation effects in the electron gas has been found experimentally in the dynamic structure factor of simple metals.  相似文献

Polarization-dependent resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is shown to be a new probe of molecular-field effects on the electronic structure of isolated molecules. A combined experimental and theoretical analysis explains the linear dichroism observed in Cl 2p RIXS following Cl 1s excitation in HCl and CF3Cl as due to molecular-field effects, including singlet-triplet exchange, indicating polarized-RIXS provides a direct probe of spin-orbit-state populations applicable to any molecule.  相似文献
