We obtain the exact probability exp[-LF([rho(x)])] of finding a macroscopic density profile rho(x) in the stationary nonequilibrium state of an open driven diffusive system, when the size of the system L-->infinity. F, which plays the role of a nonequilibrium free energy, has a very different structure from that found in the purely diffusive case. As there, F is nonlocal, but the shocks and dynamic phase transitions of the driven system are reflected in nonconvexity of F, in discontinuities in its second derivatives, and in non-Gaussian fluctuations in the steady state.  相似文献

Fluctuation relations establish rigorous identities for the nonequilibrium averages of observables. Starting from a general transport master equation with time-dependent rates, we employ the stochastic path integral approach to study statistical fluctuations around such averages. We show how under nonequilibrium conditions, rare realizations of transport observables are crucial and imply massive fluctuations that may completely mask such identities. Quantitative estimates for these fluctuations are provided. We illustrate our results on the paradigmatic example of a mesoscopic RC circuit.  相似文献

We calculate the nonequilibrium charge transport properties of nanoscale junctions in the steady state and extend the concept of charge susceptibility to the nonequilibrium conditions. We show that the nonequilibrium charge susceptibility is related to the nonlinear dynamical conductance. In spectroscopic terms, both contain the same features versus applied bias when charge fluctuation occurs in the corresponding electronic resonances. However, we show that, while the conductance exhibits features at biases corresponding to inelastic scattering with no charge fluctuations, the nonequilibrium charge susceptibility does not. We suggest that measuring both the nonequilibrium conductance and charge susceptibility in the same experiment will permit us to differentiate between different scattering processes in quantum transport.  相似文献

Even under healthy, basal conditions, physiologic systems show erratic fluctuations resembling those found in dynamical systems driven away from a single equilibrium state. Do such "nonequilibrium" fluctuations simply reflect the fact that physiologic systems are being constantly perturbed by external and intrinsic noise? Or, do these fluctuations actually, contain useful, "hidden" information about the underlying nonequilibrium control mechanisms? We report some recent attempts to understand the dynamics of complex physiologic fluctuations by adapting and extending concepts and methods developed very recently in statistical physics. Specifically, we focus on interbeat interval variability as an important quantity to help elucidate possibly non-homeostatic physiologic variability because (i) the heart rate is under direct neuroautonomic control, (ii) interbeat interval variability is readily measured by noninvasive means, and (iii) analysis of these heart rate dynamics may provide important practical diagnostic and prognostic information not obtainable with current approaches. The analytic tools we discuss may be used on a wider range of physiologic signals. We first review recent progress using two analysis methods--detrended fluctuation analysis and wavelets--sufficient for quantifying monofractual structures. We then describe recent work that quantifies multifractal features of interbeat interval series, and the discovery that the multifractal structure of healthy subjects is different than that of diseased subjects.  相似文献

We elaborate and compare two approaches to nonequilibrium thermodynamics, the two-generator bracket formulation of time-evolution equations for averages and the macroscopic fluctuation theory, for a purely dissipative isothermal driven diffusive system under steady state conditions. The fluctuation dissipation relations of both approaches play an important role for a detailed comparison. The nonequilibrium Helmholtz free energies introduced in these two approaches differ as a result of boundary conditions. A Fokker-Planck equation derived by projection operator techniques properly reproduces long range fluctuations in nonequilibrium steady states and offers the most promising possibility to describe the physically relevant fluctuations around macroscopic averages for time-dependent nonequilibrium systems.  相似文献

We have used numerical modeling to study the effect of diffusion and fluctuations in the nonequilibrium carrier density in the active layer of injection lasers based on an InAsSb/InAsSbP heterostructure on the angular distribution of the output intensity. We show that diffusion smoothes out the nonequilibrium carrier distribution in the active layer, and the fundamental lasing mode is stable over a much broader range of stripe contact widths. At the same time, diffusional processes can lead to formation of local regions with a jump in the density of nonequilibrium charge carriers, fluctuations in which can act as a source of instability for the fundamental lasing mode. Analysis of the numerical modeling results gives qualitative agreement with experimental data on the dependence of the angular distribution of the output radiation for different stripe contact widths.  相似文献

We used the atomic force microscope to manipulate and unfold individual molecules of the titin I27 domain and reconstructed its free energy surface using Jarzynski's equality. The free energy surface for both stretching and unfolding was reconstructed using an exact formula that relates the nonequilibrium work fluctuations to the molecular free energy. In addition, the unfolding free energy barrier, i.e., the activation energy, was directly obtained from experimental data for the first time. This Letter demonstrates that Jarzynski's equality can be used to analyze nonequilibrium single-molecule experiments, and to obtain the free energy surfaces for molecular systems, including interactions for which only nonequilibrium work can be measured.  相似文献

Inertial effects in fluctuations of the work to sustain a system in a nonequilibrium steady state are discussed for a dragged massive Brownian particle model using a path integral approach. We calculate the work distribution function in the laboratory and comoving frames and prove the asymptotic fluctuation theorem for these works for any initial condition. Important and observable differences between the work fluctuations in the two frames appear for finite times and are discussed concretely for a nonequilibrium steady state initial condition. We also show that for finite times a time oscillatory behavior appears in the work distribution function for masses larger than a nonzero critical value.  相似文献

Biological activity gives rise to nonequilibrium fluctuations in the cytoplasm of cells; however, there are few methods to directly measure these fluctuations. Using a reconstituted actin cytoskeleton, we show that the bending dynamics of embedded microtubules can be used to probe local stress fluctuations. We add myosin motors that drive the network out of equilibrium, resulting in an increased amplitude and modified time dependence of microtubule bending fluctuations. We show that this behavior results from steplike forces on the order of 10 pN driven by collective motor dynamics.  相似文献

Thermodynamic fluctuations in systems that are in nonequilibrium steady states are always spatially long ranged, in contrast to fluctuations in thermodynamic equilibrium. In the present paper we consider a fluid subjected to a stationary temperature gradient. Two different physical mechanisms have been identified by which the temperature gradient causes long-ranged fluctuations. One cause is the presence of couplings between fluctuating fields. Secondly, spatial variation of the strength of random forces, resulting from the local version of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, has also been shown to generate long-ranged fluctuations. We evaluate the contributions to the long-ranged temperature fluctuations due to both mechanisms. While the inhomogeneously correlated Langevin noise does lead to long-ranged fluctuations, in practice, they turn out to be negligible as compared to nonequilibrium temperature fluctuations resulting from the coupling between temperature and velocity fluctuations.  相似文献

We examine the properties of steady states in systems which interact at the boundary with a nonequilibrium environment. The examination is based on a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation, the structure of which is determined by the fact that it also governs the time evolution of the equilibrium fluctuations of the system. The nonlinearities in the Fokker-Planck equation may have two origins: thermodynamic nonlinearities which arise if the thermodynamic potential is not a bilinear function of the state variables, and nonlinear mode coupling which arises if the transport coefficients depend on the state. While these nonlinearities have only a small effect on the equilibrium fluctuations of a system away from critical points, they are shown to be important for the determination of fluctuations about nonequilibrium steady states. In particular the state dependence of the transport coefficients may lead to deviations from local equilibrium and to a breakdown of detail balance. An explicit formula for the time correlations of fluctuations about the nonequilibrium steady state is obtained. The formula leads to long-range correlations in fluids in the presence of a temperature gradient. The result is compared with earlier approaches to the same problem. Finally, we study the linear response to external forces and obtain a generalization of the fluctuation-dissipation formula relating the response functions with the nonequilibrium correlation functions.  相似文献

We analyze the critical quantum fluctuations in a coherently driven planar optical parametric oscillator. We show that the presence of transverse modes combined with quantum fluctuations changes the behavior of the "quantum image" critical point. This zero-temperature nonequilibrium quantum system has the same universality class as a finite-temperature magnetic Lifshitz transition.  相似文献

We analyze the real-time dynamics of a quantum two-state system in the presence ofnonequilibrium quantum fluctuations. The latter are generated by a coupling of thetwo-state system to a single electronic level of a quantum dot which carries anonequilibrium tunneling current. We restrict to the sequential tunneling regime andcalculate the dynamics of the two-state system, of the dot population, and of thenonequilibrium charge current on the basis of a diagrammatic perturbative method valid fora weak tunneling coupling. We find a nontrivial dependence of the relaxation and dephasingrates of the two-state system due to the nonequilibrium fluctuations which is directlylinked to the structure of the unperturbed central system. In addition, aHeisenberg-Langevin-equation of motion allows us to calculate the correlation function ofthe nonequilibrium fluctuations. By this, we obtain a generalized nonequilibriumfluctuation relation which includes the equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation theorem in thelimit of zero transport voltage. A straightforward extension to the case with atime-periodic ac voltage is shown.  相似文献

We use a fluctuating hydrodynamic approach to calculate the orientation fluctuations correlation functions of a thermotropic nematic liquid crystal in a nonequilibrium state induced by a stationary heat flux. Since in this nonequilibrium stationary state the hydrodynamic fluctuations evolve on three widely separated times scales, we use a time-scale perturbation procedure in order to partially diagonalize the hydrodynamic matrix. The wave number and frequency dependence of these orientation correlation functions is evaluated and their explicit functional form on position is also calculated analytically in and out of equilibrium. We show that for both states these correlations are long-ranged. This result shows that indeed, even in equilibrium there is long-range orientational order in the nematic, consistently with the well known properties of these systems. We also calculate the dynamic structure of the fluid in both states for a geometry consistent with light scattering experiments. We find that as with isotropic simple fluids, the external temperature gradient introduces an asymmetry in the spectrum shifting its maximum by an amount proportional to the magnitude of the gradient. This effect may be of the order of 7 per cent. Also, the width at half height may decrease by a factor of about 10 per cent. Since to our knowledge there are no experimental results available in the literature to compare with, the predictions of our model calculation remains to be assessed.  相似文献

We have employed a simple Galerkin-approximation scheme to calculate nonequilibrium temperature and concentration fluctuations in a binary fluid subjected to a temperature gradient with realistic boundary conditions. When a fluid mixture is driven outside thermal equilibrium, there are two instability mechanisms, namely a Rayleigh (stationary) and a Hopf (oscillatory) instability, causing long-ranged fluctuations. The competition of these two mechanisms causes the structure factor associated with the temperature fluctuations to exhibit two maxima as a function of the wave number q of the fluctuations, in particular, close to the convective instability. In the presence of thermally conducting but impermeable walls the intensity of the temperature fluctuations vanishes as q goes to zero, while the intensity of the concentration fluctuations remains finite in the limit of vanishing q. Finally, we propose a simpler small-Lewis-number approximation scheme, which is useful to represent nonequilibrium concentration fluctuations for mixtures with positive separation ratio, even close to (but below) the convective instability.  相似文献

Density fluctuations resulting from spinodal decomposition in a nonequilibrium first-order chiral phase transition are explored. We show that such instabilities generate divergent fluctuations of conserved charges along the isothermal spinodal lines appearing in the coexistence region. Thus, divergent density fluctuations could be a signal not only for the critical end point but also for the first-order phase transition expected in strongly interacting matter. We also compute the mean-field critical exponent at the spinodal lines. Our analysis is performed in the mean-field approximation to the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model formulated at finite temperature and density. However, our main conclusions are expected to be generic and model independent.  相似文献

As is well known, fluctuations from a stable stationary nonequilibrium state are described by the linearized inhomogeneous Boltzmann-Langevin equation. The stationary state itself can be described by the nonlinear Boltzmann equation. The ways of its linearization sometimes seem to be not unique. We argue that there is actually a unique way to obtain a linear equation for the fluctuations. As an example, we consider an analytical theory of nonequilibrium shot noise in a diffusive conductor under the space-charge-limited regime. Our approach is compared to that in [11]. We find some difference between the present theory and the approach in [11] and discuss a possible origin of the difference. We believe that it is related to the fundamentals of the theory of fluctuation phenomena in a nonequilibrium electron gas.  相似文献

Slow dynamics of density fluctuations near the colloidal glass transition is discussed from a new viewpoint by numerically solving a nonlinear stochastic diffusion equation for the density fluctuations recently proposed by one of the present authors (MT). The effects of spatial heterogeneities on the dynamics of density fluctuations are then investigated in an equilibrium system. The spatial heterogeneities are generated by the nonlinear density fluctuations, while in a nonequilibrium system they are described by a nonlinear deterministic equation for the average number density. The dynamics of equilibrium density fluctuations is thus shown to be quite different from that of nonequilibrium ones, leading to a logarithmic decay followed by less distinct α- and β-relaxation processes.
