We derive and factorize the fourth-order difference equations satisfied by orthogonal polynomials obtained from some modifications of the recurrence coefficients of classical discrete orthogonal polynomials such as: the associated, the general co-recursive, co-recursive associated, co-dilated and the general co-modified classical orthogonal polynomials. Moreover, we find four linearly independent solutions of these fourth-order difference equations, and show how the results obtained for modified classical discrete orthogonal polynomials can be extended to modified semi-classical discrete orthogonal polynomials. Finally, we extend the validity of the results obtained for the associated classical discrete orthogonal polynomials with integer order of association from integers to reals.  相似文献

In 1975, Tom Koornwinder studied examples of two variable analogues of the Jacobi polynomials in two variables. Those orthogonal polynomials are eigenfunctions of two commuting and algebraically independent partial differential operators. Some of these examples are well known classical orthogonal polynomials in two variables, such as orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball, on the simplex or the tensor product of Jacobi polynomials in one variable, but the remaining cases are not considered classical by other authors. The definition of classical orthogonal polynomials considered in this work provides a different perspective on the subject. We analyze in detail Koornwinder polynomials and using the Koornwinder tools, new examples of orthogonal polynomials in two variables are given.  相似文献

This paper is devoted to characterizations of classical orthogonal polynomials on quadratic lattices by using a matrix approach. In this form we recover the Hahn, Geronimus, Tricomi and Bochner type characterizations of classical orthogonal polynomials on quadratic lattices. Moreover a new matrix characterization of classical ortho-gonal polynomials in quadratic lattices is presented. From the Bochner type characterization we derive the three-term recurrence relation coefficients for these polynomials.  相似文献

Para‐orthogonal polynomials derived from orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle are known to have all their zeros on the unit circle. In this note we study the zeros of a family of hypergeometric para‐orthogonal polynomials. As tools to study these polynomials, we obtain new results which can be considered as extensions of certain classical results associated with three term recurrence relations and differential equations satisfied by orthogonal polynomials on the real line. One of these results which might be considered as an extension of the classical Sturm comparison theorem, enables us to obtain monotonicity with respect to the parameters for the zeros of these para‐orthogonal polynomials. Finally, a monotonicity of the zeros of Meixner‐Pollaczek polynomials is proved.  相似文献

For a bilinear form obtained by adding a Dirac mass to a positive definite moment functional defined in the linear space of polynomials in several variables, explicit formulas of orthogonal polynomials are derived from the orthogonal polynomials associated with the moment functional. Explicit formula for the reproducing kernel is also derived and used to establish certain inequalities for classical orthogonal polynomials.  相似文献

We consider Koornwinder’s method for constructing orthogonal polynomials in two variables from orthogonal polynomials in one variable. If semiclassical orthogonal polynomials in one variable are used, then Koornwinder’s construction generates semiclassical orthogonal polynomials in two variables. We consider two methods for deducing matrix Pearson equations for weight functions associated with these polynomials, and consequently, we deduce the second order linear partial differential operators for classical Koornwinder polynomials.  相似文献

In the present paper the orthogonality relations, exhibited by both numerator and denominator polynomials of both even and odd order convergents of a regular C-fraction of a power series with coefficients as reciprocal of odd numbers are described. The two sequences of convergents are nothing but diagonal and upper diagonal Pade approximants for the power series. The two orthogonal polynomials extracted from denominators are shown to be classical orthogonal polynomials and two orthogonal polynomials extracted from numerators are shown to be non-classical orthogonal polynomials..  相似文献

We are dealing with the concept of d-dimensional orthogonal (abbreviated d-orthogonal) polynomials, that is to say polynomials verifying one standard recurrence relation of order d + 1. Among the d-orthogonal polynomials one singles out the natural generalizations of certain classical orthogonal polynomials. In particular, we are concerned, in the present paper, with the solution of the following problem (P): Find all polynomial sequences which are at the same time Appell polynomials and d-orthogonal. The resulting polynomials are a natural extension of the Hermite polynomials.

A sequence of these polynomials is obtained. All the elements of its (d + 1)-order recurrence are explicitly determined. A generating function, a (d + 1)-order differential equation satisfied by each polynomial and a characterization of this sequence through a vectorial functional equation are also given. Among such polynomials one singles out the d-symmetrical ones (Definition 1.7) which are the d-orthogonal polynomials analogous to the Hermite classical ones. When d = 1 (ordinary orthogonality), we meet again the classical orthogonal polynomials of Hermite.  相似文献

Using a particular way of normalizing the orthogonal polynomials, which is most commonly encountered in the synthesis of filtering networks in communication and electronic engineering, two theorems concerning the extremal properties of orthogonal polynomials are first proved. The results are then applied to find the minimum value and the minimizing function for various definite integrals involving weight functions of classical orthogonal polynomials.  相似文献

A formulation is given for the spectral transformation of the generalized eigenvalue problem through the decomposition of the second-order differential operators. This allows us to construct some Laurent biorthogonal polynomial systems with gaps in the degree of the polynomial sequence. These correspond to an exceptional-type extension of the orthogonal polynomials, as an extension of the Laurent biorthogonal polynomials. Specifically, we construct the exceptional extension of the Hendriksen–van Rossum polynomials, which are biorthogonal analogs of the classical orthogonal polynomials. Similar to the cases of exceptional extensions of classical orthogonal polynomials, both state-deletion and state-addition occur.  相似文献

Stationary equilibria of point vortices in the plane and on the cylinder in the presence of a background flow are studied. Vortex systems with an arbitrary choice of circulations are considered. Differential equations satisfied by generating polynomials of vortex configurations are derived. It is shown that these equations can be reduced to a single one. It is found that polynomials that are Wronskians of classical orthogonal polynomials solve the latter equation. As a consequence vortex equilibria at a certain choice of background flows can be described with the help of Wronskians of classical orthogonal polynomials.  相似文献

Abstract

A new set of orthogonal polynomials is found that are solutions to a sixth order formally self adjoint differential equation. These polynomials are shown to generalize the Legendre and Legendre type polynomials. We also show that these polynomials satisfy many properties shared by the classical orthogonal polynomials of Jacobi, Laguerre and Hermite.  相似文献

Orthogonal polynomials on the real line always satisfy a three-term recurrence relation. The recurrence coefficients determine a tridiagonal semi-infinite matrix (Jacobi matrix) which uniquely characterizes the orthogonal polynomials. We investigate new orthogonal polynomials by adding to the Jacobi matrixrnew rows and columns, so that the original Jacobi matrix is shifted downward. Thernew rows and columns contain 2rnew parameters and the newly obtained orthogonal polynomials thus correspond to an upward extension of the Jacobi matrix. We give an explicit expression of the new orthogonal polynomials in terms of the original orthogonal polynomials, their associated polynomials, and the 2rnew parameters, and we give a fourth order differential equation for these new polynomials when the original orthogonal polynomials are classical. Furthermore we show how the 1?orthogonalizing measure for these new orthogonal polynomials can be obtained and work out the details for a one-parameter family of Jacobi polynomials for which the associated polynomials are again Jacobi polynomials.  相似文献

Classical orthogonal polynomials in two variables can be characterized as the polynomial solutions of a matrix second-order partial differential equation involving matrix polynomial coefficients. In this work, we study classical orthogonal polynomials in two variables whose partial derivatives satisfy again a second-order partial differential equation of the same type.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate a set of orthogonal polynomials. We relate the polynomials to the Biconfluent Heun equation and present an explicit expression for the polynomials in terms of the classical Hermite polynomials. The orthogonality with a varying measure and the recurrence relation are also presented.  相似文献

A method to calculate the asymptotical eigenvalue density (asymptotical density of zeros) ρ(x) of Jacobi matrices (orthogonal polynomials) in terms of its moments is presented. This method does not require the convergence of continued fractions and inversion of functional transformations as previous ones do. It is shown to be applicable to a wide family of Jacobi matrices (orthogonal polynomials). As a byproduct the density ρ(x) is explicitly found for certain classical orthogonal polynomials.  相似文献

In this paper, the Bezout's identity is analyzed in the context of classical orthogonal polynomials solution of a second order differential equation of hypergeometric type. Differential equations, relation with the starting family as well as recurrence relations and explicit representations are given for the Bezout's pair. Extensions to classical orthogonal polynomials of a discrete variable and their q-analogues are also presented. Applications of these results for the representation of the second kind functions are given.  相似文献

We derive the fourth-order difference equation satisfied by the first associated of classical orthogonal polynomials of a discrete variable. We give it explicitly for first associated of Hahn polynomials from which can be derived by a limiting process the equation satisfied by first associated of all classical families (continuous and discrete).  相似文献
