Instead of maintaining the original ideal of having a broad scientific basis for practical Operational Research, it is suggested that the O.R. community has uncritically accepted a myth which views O.R. as a "Hard" (Physical or even Mathematical) Science. It is argued that this has had profound consequences which explain the present difficulties O.R. workers have with problems involving major Social or Behavioural features. It is concluded that the "Hard" Science myth must be replaced, and a return made to the original conception of O.R., if we are to assist effectively in the complex social issues we face today.  相似文献

The fast growing U.S. mobile wireless industry has been experiencing dramatic technological change and substantial competition. As a result of these catalysts, we argue that wireless firms have experienced significant productivity improvement and provide new evidence that technological progress almost exclusively contributed to productivity improvements in the wireless industry by significantly expanding the production possibilities set. We employ nonparametric estimation procedures based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) that utilize input-output data from a representative sample of 16 firms in the mobile wireless industry to estimate productivity change, technological change, and relative efficiency change for the period spanning the years from 2000 to 2002. Our findings show that the industry experienced a significant growth of 13% in productivity, which was primarily due to an average technological progress of 9.9% in the industry. Additionally, we find that national wireless operators experienced significantly higher productivity growth and contributed more to technological progress than regional providers. Firms that were industry pioneers as evidenced by high market share at the beginning of our sample period experienced higher productivity growth and greater technological progress compared to firms with lower initial market share. Moreover, the industry experienced significantly higher productivity growth and technical progress in the later sample period between 2001 and 2002 than in the early period between 2000 and 2001.  相似文献

A new approach to the design of a dynamic damper for a monomass oscillator is presented; the design procedure is then applied to control a multimodal oscillator. This new dynamics emerged from an analysis by means of phasors (rotating vectors in the Argand–Gauss plane) which revealed the phase relations between the damper and main oscillator. In particular this work introduces a geometric formalism, based on the use of phasors in the complex plane, for the sizing of inertial dampers applied to multimodal structural oscillators. Their damping effect depends on the fact that the response of the secondary oscillator (the damper) delays the response of the primary mass by 90°, so that the elastic force transmitted by the damper becomes a viscous force on the controlled oscillator. When such condition occurs we say that the damper is “tuned” to the main oscillator; the damping induced by the damper serves to limit the displacement of main oscillator. Our geometrical approach provides a method whose language is close to that of structural mechanics, thus paving the way to the professionals for: (i) sizing the damper parameters and (ii) evaluating the stability to the damped system and its performance limits. The aim of the development is that of exploring the use of dampers to control the response of buildings under horizontal seismic and aerodynamic loads.  相似文献

We study the scattering problem associated with the behavior of whispering gallery waves near the inflection point of the boundary. In order to solve the scattering problem, we prove the theorems of existence, uniqueness and smoothness of the solution. We obtain two new equivalent quasinorms for unweighted isotropic Besov and Lizorkin-Triebel spaces in the epigraph of a Lipschitz function. The question on the straightening is studied, i. e., the question on the existence of a diffeomorphism taking the epigraph into a halfspace which preserves the Lizorkin-Triebel spaces of the same indices. A criterion for the straightening is established in terms of dyadic weighted inequality where oscillations of a given function on stretched dyadic cubes are involved.  相似文献

In applying any numerical method such as the bisection method to determine a root, it is important to realize that the best we can usually achieve is an approximation ofthe exact root. We consider the non-local Fisher–KPP equation on a bounded domain with Neumann boundary conditions. Thanks to a Lyapunov function, we prove that, under a general hypothesis on the kernel involved in the non-local term, the homogenous steady state 1 is globally asymptotically stable. This assumption happens to be linked to some conditions given in the literature, which ensure that travelling waves link 0 to 1.  相似文献
