An experimental study was conducted to control the unsteadiness of separation shock in a Mach 2 24° compression ramp-induced interaction using mechanical vortex generators (VG). Control devices in the form of an array of single-row delta-ramps were placed upstream of the interaction region and tested for two streamwise locations with respect to the boundary layer thickness (δ) at the interaction location and height ‘h’ of the delta-ramps, i.e., at 27.5δ or h/δ?=?0.65 and at 12.5δ or h/δ?=?0.26, respectively. Surface oil study revealed traces of streamwise counter-rotating vortex pairs generated downstream of these devices. Measurements using pressure-sensitive paint also showed a spanwise sinusoidal pattern of wall pressure variation indicating generation of streamwise vortices from these control devices. These vortices, on interaction with the reverse flow in the separation bubble, replaced a well-defined separation line (for no control) by a highly corrugated separation line. In the region of separation, the mean pressure distribution gets modified while the peak rms value in the intermittent region of separation showed significant changes. Additionally, the spanwise spacing ‘s’ of the vertex of the delta ramps seemed to be an important parameter in controlling the peak rms value. A decrease in this spacing, i.e., VG1 with s =? 0, significantly reduced the peak rms value (by 50 and 35 %) while an increase in the spacing, i.e., VG2 with s =? 1?mm, consistently showed an increase (by 12 and 30 %) in the separation shock unsteadiness relative to no control, irrespective of their placement location (of h/δ?=?0.65 and 0.26, respectively).

An experimental investigation into the mechanism of shock wave oscillation in compression ramp-generated shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions is presented. Particular emphasis is focused upon documenting the respective roles played by both burst-sweep events in the turbulent boundary layer immediately upstream of the interaction and the downstream separated shear layer upon unsteady shock front motion. Unlike the majority of compression ramp experiments which involve bulk separation and large-scale shock motion, consideration is given here to comparatively “weak” interactions in which the streamwise spatial excursion of the shock front is always less than one boundary layer thickness. In this manner any shock motion due to upstream burst-sweep events should be more apparent in relation to that oscillation associated with the separated region. A discrete Hilbert transform-based conditional sampling technique is used to obtain wall pressure measurements conditioned to burst-sweep events. The conditional sampling technique forms the basis by which the instantaneous shock motion is conditioned to the occurrence of upstream bursting. The relationship between the separation bubble and shock motion is also explored in detail. The results of the experiments indicate that the separation bubble represents a first-order effect on shock oscillation. Although it is demonstrated theoretically that the burst-sweep cycle can also give rise to unsteady shock motion of much lower amplitude, the experiments clearly demonstrate that there is no discernible statistical relationship between burst events and spanwise coherent shock front motion.

Results of an experimental investigation of the characteristics of a separation region induced by the interaction of an externally generated oblique shock with the turbulent boundary layer formed in a rectangular half channel are discussed. The experiments were carried out in the supersonic wind tunnel of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics SB RAS at a free-stream Mach number M =3.01 over a range of Reynolds numbers Re 1=(9.7–47.5)×106 m-1 and at zero incidence and zero yaw of the model. Particular attention is paid to the size of the zone of the upstream propagation of disturbances (upstream influence region) under different experimental conditions: with varied values of the shock wave strength, half channel width, and Reynolds number. It is shown, in particular, that the normalized upstream influence region length as a function of inclination angle of the shock generator in a rectangular half channel is readily approximated by a simple exponential function. In support of the known reference data obtained for supersonic numbers M and moderate Re in other configurations, it is also shown that the upstream influence region length decreases with increasing Reynolds number. Generalization of experimental data on the length of the upstream influence region formed in similar geometric configurations is possible using an additional reference linear scale which is the distance from the leading edge of the shock generator to the exposed surface. A substantial dependence of the reference dimensions of separation region on the half channel width is also established.

Scanning PIV is applied to a laminar separation bubble to investigate the spanwise structure and dynamics of the roll-up of vortices within the bubble. The laminar flow separation with turbulent reattachment is studied on the suction side of an airfoil SD7003 at Reynolds numbers of 20,000–60,000. The flow is recorded with a CMOS high-speed camera in successive light-sheet planes over a time span of 1–2 s to resolve the temporal evolution of the flow in the different planes. The results show the quasi-periodic development of large vortex-rolls at the downstream end of the separation bubble, which have a convex structure and an extension of 10–20% chord length in the spanwise direction. These vortices possess an irregular spanwise pattern. The evolution process of an exemplary vortex structure is shown in detail starting from small disturbances within the separation bubble transforming into a compact vortex at the downstream end of the separation bubble. As the vortex grows in size and strength it reaches a critical state that leads to an abrupt burst of the vortex with a large ejection of fluid into the mean flow.

Dynamics of hairpin vortices generated by a mixing tab in a channel flow
To better understand mixing by hairpin vortices, time-series particle image velocimetry (PIV) was applied to the wake of a trapezoidal-shaped passive mixing tab mounted at the bottom of a square turbulent channel (Re h =2,080 based on the tab height). Instantaneous velocity/vorticity fields were obtained in sequences of 10 Hz in the tab wake in the center plane (xy) and in a plane (xz) parallel to the wall. Periodically-shed hairpin vortices were clearly identified and seen to rise as they advected downstream. Experimental evidence shows that the vortex-induced ejection of the near-wall viscous fluid to the immediate upstream is important to the dynamics of hairpin vortices. It can increase the strength of the hairpin vortices in the near tab region and cause generation of secondary hairpin vortices further downstream when the hairpin heads are farther away from the wall. Measurements also reveal the existence of a type of new secondary vortice with the opposite-sign spanwise vorticity. The distribution of vortex loci in the xy plane shows that the hairpin vortices and the reverse vortices are spatially segregated in distinct layers. Turbulence statistics, including mean velocity profiles, Reynolds stresses, and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate distributions, were obtained from the PIV data. These statistical quantities clearly reveal imprints of the identified vortex structures and provide insight into mixing effectiveness.

The evolution of low-speed streaks in the turbulent boundary layer of the minimum channel flow unit at a low Reynolds number is simulated by the direct numer- ical simulation (DNS) based on the standard Fourier-Chebyshev spectral method. The subharmonic sinuous (SS) mode for two spanwise-aligned low-speed streaks is excited by imposing the initial perturbations. The possibilities and the physical realities of the turbulent sustaining in the minimal channel unit are examined. Based on such a flow field environment, the evolution of the low-speed streaks during a cycle of turbulent sus- taining, including lift-up, oscillation, and breakdown, is investigated. The development of streamwise vortices and the dynamics of vortex structures are examined. The results show that the vortices generated from the same streak are staggered along the streamwise direction, while the vortices induced by different streaks tilt toward the normal direction due to the mutual induction effect. It is the spatial variations of the streamwise vortices that cause the lift-up of the streaks. By resolving the transport dynamics of enstrophy, the strength of the vortices is found to continuously grow in the logarithmic layer through the vortex stretching mechanism during the evolution of streaks. The enhancement of the vortices contributes to the spanwise oscillation and the following breakdown of the low-speed streaks.

SBLI control for wings and inlets
Flow control can be applied to shock wave/boundary layer interactions to achieve two different goals;the delay of shock-induced separation and/or the reduction ofstagnation pressure losses, which cause wave drag or inletinefficiencies. This paper introduces the principles and maintechniques for both approaches and assesses their relativesuitability for practical applications. While boundary layersuction is already in wide use for separation control, themost promising novel device is the micro-vortex generator, which can deliver similar benefits to traditional vortex generatorsat much reduced device drag. Shock control is notyet used on practical applications for a number of reasons, but recent research has focused on three-dimensional deviceswhich promise to deliver flow control with improved offdesignbehaviour. Furthermore, there are some indicationsthat a new generation of control devices may be able to combinethe benefits of shock and boundary layer control andreduce shock-induced stagnation pressure losses as well asdelay shock-induced separation.

The spatio-temporal dynamics of an impinging shock/boundary layer interaction at Mach 2 and under incipient separation conditions, has been investigated experimentally by means of high-speed particle image velocimetry (PIV). The available PIV acquisition rate of up to 20 kHz permits a time-resolved characterization of the interaction. The dynamics of different flow regions—notably the separation region and the reflected shock—were quantified by means of temporal auto-correlation fields and pseudo-spectral analysis. The PIV data further enable to investigate the relationship between spatially extended flow features, such as shock position and bubble size, as well as the influence of the upstream boundary layer. The results confirm earlier studies that there is an important upstream effect on the present incipient interaction.

Controlled concentrations of trapped vorticity within an offset, subsonic (MAIP ≤ 0.7) diffuser are explored for active suppression of flow distortion in joint experimental and numerical investigations. The coupling between trapped vorticity, used to model boundary-layer separation, and secondary-flow vortices is manipulated using an array of fluidic oscillating jets, which are spanwise distributed just upstream of the trapped vortex. Actuation energizes the separated shear layer, reducing the size of separation and effecting an earlier reattachment of the boundary layer, which favorably effects the flow field downstream of reattachment. It is shown that optimal interactions between actuation and the trapped vortex fully suppress the central vortex pair, and redistributes the residual vorticity around the diffuser's circumference. This results in a 68% reduction in circumferential distortion at the Aerodynamic Interface Plane (AIP), using an actuation mass flow rate that is only 0.25% of the diffuser mass flow rate.

The results of visual investigations and direct numerical simulation of flow past a spanwise rib in a channel in a pulsating external flow at the Reynolds numbers corresponding to transition to turbulence in the separation region downstream of the rib in steady-state flow past the latter are represented. It is shown that the calculated and experimental data are in the adequate accordance. The effect of the forced unsteadiness parameters on the vortex flow structure downstream of the rib is analyzed. Some laws of the formation and evolution of the vortex structure downstream of the rib in a pulsating flow are obtained.

Numerical simulations using an improved version of the immersed boundary method are performed to explore a passive control concept for a single flexible flag in a viscous uniform flow. In order to control a single flag passively, we utilize the distinct dynamics of two side-by-side flags, characterized by in-phase and out-of-phase flapping modes depending on their spanwise gap distance. When the two side-by-side flags are in an in-phase flapping mode with a small spanwise gap distance, the flapping amplitude of a single downstream flag is highly enhanced due to synchronization between the vortices shed from the upstream and downstream flags. However, when the two upstream flags flap in an out-of-phase flapping mode with a large spanwise gap distance, the flapping of the single flag is significantly weakened with a reduction of the dominant flapping frequency. Because the upstream flags induce consecutive counter-rotating vortex pairs with a high frequency due to their flapping mode (out-of-phase state), relatively strong interaction with an upcoming vortex of the opposite rotational direction leads to flapping inhibition of the single flag. For an intermediate spanwise gap distance, the vortex-to-vortex interaction between the flags becomes more complicated, and a change of the flapping phases of the two side-by-side flags depending on streamwise gap distance between the upstream and downstream flags occurs. The interactions between coupled flags are documented through the root-mean-square cross-stream tail positions, frequency, drag coefficient, vorticity and pressure contours of the flags with varying non-dimensional parameters relevant to the problem. The proposed passive control concept of a single flag using two side-by-side flags is applicable to the development of energy harvesting systems to extract more energy and flapping control systems to suppress vibration.

An experimental study of the flowfield generated by the interaction of a streamwise vortex having a strong wake-type axial Mach number profile and a two-dimensional oblique shock wave was conducted in a Mach 2.49 flow. The experiments were aimed at investigating the dynamics of supersonic vortex distortion and to study downstream behavior of a streamwise vortex during a strong shock wave/vortex encounter. The experiments involved positioning an oblique shock generator in the form of a two-dimensional wedge downstream of a semi-span, vortex generator wing section so that the wing-tip vortex interacted with the otherwise planar oblique shock wave. Planar laser sheet visualizations of the flowfield indicated an expansion of the vortex core in crossing a spherically blunt-nose shock front. The maximum vortex core diameter occurred at a distance of 12.7 mm downstream of the wedge leading edge where the vortex had a core diameter of more than double its undisturbed value. At distances further downstream the vortex core diameter remained nearly constant, while it appeared to become more diffused at distances far from the wedge leading edge. Measurements of vortex trajectory revealed that the vortex convected in the freestream direction immediately downstream of the bulged-forward shock structure, while it traveled parallel to the wedge surface at distances further downstream. The turbulent distorted vortex structure which formed as a result of the interaction, was found to be sensitive to downstream disturbances in a manner consistent with incompressible vortex breakdown. Physical arguments are presented to relate behavior of streamwise vortices during oblique and normal shock wave interactions.

The spanwise oscillation of channel walls is known to substantially reduce the skin-friction drag in turbulent channel flows. In order to understand the limitations of this flow control approach when applied in ducts, direct numerical simulations of controlled turbulent duct flows with an aspect ratio of A R = 3 are performed. In contrast to channel flows, the spanwise extension of the duct is limited. Therefore, the spanwise wall oscillation either directly interacts with the duct side walls or its spatial extent is limited to a certain region of the duct. The present results show that this spanwise limitation of the oscillating region strongly diminishes the drag reduction potential of the control technique. We propose a simple model that allows estimating the achievable drag reduction rates in duct flows as a function of the width of the duct and the spanwise extent of the controlled region.

The experimental investigation of a turbulent separated flow over a fence is presented. By introducing a periodic disturbance upstream of the separation region in front of the fence, the time averaged length of the separation region downstream of the fence was reduced by as much as 40%. Two types of flow manipulation were applied: an oscillating cross-flow with zero net mass-flux through a spanwise slot in the floor of the test section and a spanwise oriented, oscillating spoiler. The cross-flow was generated by a loudspeaker system connected to a chamber underneath the spanwise slot. Both types of flow manipulation generate spanwise vortices at the fence that convect into the region downstream of the fence where they enhance the mixing in the shear layer and reduce the time mean length of the reverse-flow region downstream of the fence. Velocity profiles phase averaged with respect to the forcing frequency and phase triggered flow visualisations show that the spanwise vortices cause the long reverse-flow region of the unmanipulated flow to break up into separate smaller regions. While the time mean length of the reverse-flow region is reduced in the manipulated case, the length of the region where instantaneous reverse-flow occurs is not changed. The data presented include wall pulsed-wire measurements of the wall shear-stress and its turbulent fluctuations, and LDA measurements of the streamwise and the wall-normal velocity components and turbulent stresses.

The deformation and instability of a low-density spherical bubble induced by an incident and its reflected shock waves are studied by using the large eddy simulation method. The computational model is firstly validated by experimental results from the literature and is further used to examine the effect of incident shock wave strength on the formations and three-dimensional evolutions of the vortex rings. For the weak shock wave case (Ma?=?1.24), the baroclinic effect induced by the reflected shock wave is the key mechanism for the formation of new vortex rings. The vortex rings not only move due to the self-induced effect and the flow field velocity, but also generate azimuthal instability due to the pressure disturbance. For the strong shock wave case (Ma?=?2.2), a boundary layer is formed adjacent to the end wall owing to the approach of vortex ring, and unsteady separation of the boundary layer near the wall results in the ejection and formation of new vortex rings. These vortex rings interact in the vicinity of the end wall and finally collapse to a complicated vortex structure via azimuthal instability. For both shock wave strength cases, the evolutions of vortex rings due to the instability lead to the formation of the complicated structure dominated by the small-scale streamwise vortices.

Görtler vortices develop along concave walls as a result of the imbalance between the centrifugal force and radial pressure gradient. In this study, we introduce a simple control strategy aimed at reducing the growth rate of Görtler vortices by locally modifying the surface geometry in spanwise and streamwise directions. Such wall deformations are accounted in the boundary region equations by using a Prandtl transform of dependent and independent variables. The vortex energy is then controlled via a classical proportional control algorithm for which either the wall-normal velocity or the wall shear stress serves as the control variable. Our numerical results indicate that the control algorithm is quite effective in minimizing the wall shear stress.

Numerical experiments are conducted to investigate spatially developing Görtler vortices and the way in which wall roughness promotes their formation and growth. Several different types of walls are examined and their relative merits as vortex promoters assessed. The only disturbances of the flow are due to the rough wall; hence, at each downstream station the local field feels (1) the upstream flow distribution (produced by the upstream wall conditions) and (2) the local forcing at the wall. Rapid vortex formation and growth, like in the case of ribleted walls, can be qualitatively explained by the positive combination of these two effects; when the two influences on the local flow field compete, e.g. for randomly distributed wall roughness, the equations with the boundary conditions filter the disturbances over some streamwise length, function of the roughness amplitude, to create coherent patches of vorticity out of the random noise. These patches can then be amplified by the instability mechanism. If a thin rough strip is aligned along the span of an otherwise smooth wall to trip the boundary layer, the filtering region is shorter and growth of the vortices starts earlier. Also for the case of an isolated three-dimensional hump a rapid disturbance amplification is produced, but in this case the vortices remain confined and a very slow spanwise spreading of the perturbation occurs. In all naturally developing cases, where no specific wavelengths are explicity favored, the average spanwise wavelengths computed are very close to those of largest growth from the linear stability theory.
