In this article we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a given finite group of outer automorphisms to be induced by the action of a group of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms on the fundamental group of a punctured surface. When the group is abelian, necessary and sufficient conditions can also be given in the absence of orientability assumptions. These properties are formulated in terms of the finite automorphism groups which project into the given outer automorphism group: each non-trivial automorphism in any such group can fix at most a cyclic subgroup of the fundamental group.  相似文献

We show that a finite completely regular semigroup has a sub-log-exponential free spectrum if and only if it is locally orthodox and has nilpotent subgroups. As a corollary, it follows that the Seif Conjecture holds true for completely regular monoids. In the process, we derive solutions of word problems of free objects in a sequence of varieties of locally orthodox completely regular semigroups from solutions of word problems in relatively free bands.  相似文献

Some fundamental questions about infinite-vertex (free) profinite semigroupoids are clarified, putting in evidence differences with the finite-vertex case. This is done with examples of free profinite semigroupoids generated by the graph of a subshift. It is also proved that for minimal subshifts, the infinite edges of such free profinite semigroupoids form a connected compact groupoid.  相似文献

In this paper, the cellularity of twisted semigroup algebras over an integral domain is investigated by introducing the concept of cellular twisted semigroup algebras of type JH. Partition algebras, Brauer algebras and Temperley-Lieb algebras all are examples of cellular twisted semigroup algebras of type JH. Our main result shows that the twisted semigroup algebra of a regular semigroup is cellular of type JH with respect to an involution on the twisted semigroup algebra if and only if the twisted group algebras of certain maximal subgroups are cellular algebras. Here we do not assume that the involution of the twisted semigroup algebra induces an involution of the semigroup itself. Moreover, for a twisted semigroup algebra, we do not require that the twisting decomposes essentially into a constant part and an invertible part, or takes values in the group of units in the ground ring. Note that trivially twisted semigroup algebras are the usual semigroup algebras. So, our results extend not only a recent result of East, but also some results of Wilcox.  相似文献

We examine free orientation-reversing group actions on orientable handlebodies, and free actions on nonorientable handlebodies. A classification theorem is obtained, giving the equivalence classes and weak equivalence classes of free actions in terms of algebraic invariants that involve Nielsen equivalence. This is applied to describe the sets of free actions in various cases, including a complete classification for many (and conjecturally all) cases above the minimum genus. For abelian groups, the free actions are classified for all genera.  相似文献

A relative presentation is a triple where A is a group, X is a set, and R is a set of words in the free product A∗F(X) where F(X) is the free group with basis X. Under certain hypotheses on the relative presentation , we show that (1) the group presented by is locally indicable; (2) the pre-aspherical model for is aspherical; (3) the Freiheitssatz holds for . The equivalence (or weak equivalence) classes of orientation-preserving free actions of a finite group G on an orientable three-dimensional handlebody of genus g?1 can be enumerated in terms of sets of generators of G. They correspond to the equivalence classes of generating n-vectors of elements of G, where n=1+(g−1)/|G|, under Nielsen equivalence (or weak Nielsen equivalence). For Abelian and dihedral G, this allows a complete determination of the equivalence and weak equivalence classes of actions for all genera. Additional information is obtained for other classes of groups. For all G, there is only one equivalence class of actions on the genus g handlebody if g is at least 1+?(G)|G|, where ?(G) is the maximal length of a chain of subgroups of G. There is a stabilization process that sends an equivalence class of actions to an equivalence class of actions on a higher genus, and some results about its effects are obtained.  相似文献

In this paper, we show that a class of 2-dimensional locally CAT(-1) spaces is topologically rigid: isomorphism of the fundamental groups is equivalent to the spaces being homeomorphic. An immediate application of this result is a diagram rigidity theorem for certain amalgamations of free groups. The direct limits of two such amalgamations are isomorphic if and only if there is an isomorphism between the respective diagrams.  相似文献
