Complete Distributivity of Lattice Ordered Groups and of Vector Lattices

In this paper we investigate the possibility of a regular embedding of a lattice ordered group into a completely distributive vector lattice.     

Cutset Condition for Geometric Lattices

In this paper we prove that an atomistic lattice L of finite length is geometric if it has the nontrivial modular cutset condition, that is, every maximal chain of L contains a modular element which is different from the minimum element and the maximum element of L. The main result of this paper is: any primary Arguesian lattice over the field GF(p) of geometric dimension at least three is isomorphic to the lattice of all submodules of a finitely generated module over the ring of polynomials of bounded degree over the field GF(p).

Distributivity conditions for lattices of dominions in quasivarieties of Abelian groups

Let ℳ be any quasivariety of Abelian groups, L_q(ℳ) be a subquasivariety lattice of ℳ, dom _G ^ℳ be the dominion of a subgroup H of a group G in ℳ, and G/dom _G ^ℳ (H) be a finitely generated group. It is known that the set L(G, H, ℳ) = {dom _G ^N (H)| N ∈ L_q(ℳ)} forms a lattice w.r.t. set-theoretic inclusion. We look at the structure of dom _G ^ℳ (H). Whaley's Theorem for Finite Lattices

Whaley's Theorem on the existence of large proper sublattices of infinite lattices is extended to ordered sets and finite lattices. As a corollary it is shown that every finite lattice L with |L|≥3 contains a proper sublattice S with |S|≥|L|^1/3. It is also shown that that every finite modular lattice L with |L|≥3 contains a proper sublattice S with |S|≥|L|^1/2, and every finite distributive lattice L with |L|≥4 contains a proper sublattice S with |S|≥3/4|L|. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Classification of integral lattices with large class number

A detailed exposition of Kneser's neighbour method for quadratic lattices over totally real number fields, and of the sub-procedures needed for its implementation, is given. Using an actual computer program which automatically generates representatives for all isomorphism classes in one genus of rational lattices, various results about genera of -elementary lattices, for small prime level are obtained. For instance, the class number of -dimensional -elementary even lattices of determinant is ; no extremal lattice in the sense of Quebbemann exists. The implementation incorporates as essential parts previous programs of W. Plesken and B. Souvignier.

     

Graph Automorphisms and Cells of Lattices

In this paper we apply the notion of cell of a lattice for dealing with graph automorphisms of lattices (in connection with a problem proposed by G. Birkhoff).
