Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) can decorate surfaces with `smart′ functional units possessing reversible stimulus-response behavior for optical, thermal, magnetic or redox-chemical stimuli. An independent performance of individual functional groups in such a film is desirable, which can be, in particular, ensured by fairly large lateral separations between tailgroups in the SAM. Adsorbate molecules with multiple attachment points are very promising in this context owing to their large surface footprint, which covers a surface area exceeding the lateral dimensions of the functional groups. To address these design constraints, novel tridentate long-chain tripodal thioether ligands with central adamantine units and a redox-active ferrocenyl tailgroup, 1-[4-(ferrocenylethynyl)phenyl]-3,5,7-tri[(4-n-octylsulfanyl)phenyl]adamantine (T8) and 1-[4-(ferrocenylethynyl)phenyl]-3,5,7-tri[(4-n-dodecylsulfanyl)phenyl]adamantine (T12), were synthesized and used as tripodal adsorbate molecules for the fabrication of redox-active ferrocenyl-terminated SAMs on Au(111). These SAMs were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and sum frequency generation spectroscopy. The data suggest that T8 and T12 form almost contamination-free, well-aligned and fairly densely-packed SAMs on Au(111) with laterally separated ferrocenyl units. The SAMs show a homogeneous binding chemistry, an important requirement for high fidelity SAMs. SFG results indicate lateral interactions between neighboring molecules via the long-chain binding units.  相似文献

The new tridentate thioether ligands PhSi(CH2SMe)3 (1) and Ph-p-C6H4Si(CH2SMe)3 (2) have been synthesised and used for the preparation of the chelates fac-[W(kappa3-1)(CO)3] and fac-[W(kappa3-2)(CO)3], which were characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 and 2 were used as tripodal adsorbate molecules for the fabrication of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold. Film formation from solution was investigated in situ by second harmonic generation (SHG) and ellipsometry, which revealed a two-stepped process (fast adsorption, followed by slow film ordering). SAMs of 2 on gold were further investigated by ex situ methods, viz. high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HRXPS), Fourier transform infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (FTIRRAS), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The latter two methods indicated dense packing of the tripodal anchor groups on the surface, with a substantially lower density of the biphenyl pricks. HRXPS showed three different binding states of sulfur, including a standard thiolate-type and a coordination-type state.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are surface coatings that efficiently prevent nonspecific adhesion of biomolecules to surfaces. Here, we report on SAM formation of the PEG thiol CH3O(CH2CH2O)17NHCO(CH2)2SH (PEG(17)) on three types of Au films: thermally evaporated granular Au and two types of Au films from hydrogen flame annealing of granular Au, Au(111), and Au silicide. The different Au surfaces clearly affects the morphology and mechanical properties of the PEG(17) SAM, which is shown by AFM topographs and force distance curves. The two types of SAMs found on flame-annealed Au were denoted "soft" and "hard" due to their difference in stiffness and resistance to scratching by the AFM probe. With the aim of nanometer scale patterning of the PEG(17), the SAMs were exposed by low energy (1 kV) electron beam lithography (EBL). Two distinctly different types of behaviour were observed on the different types of SAM; the soft PEG(17) SAM was destroyed in a self-developing process while material deposition was dominant for the hard PEG(17) SAM.  相似文献

Assembly of dodecyl thiocyanate (C12SCN) from ethanol solution onto Au(111)/mica substrates was investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS). Contrary to previous reports, thiolate monolayers formed by cleavage of the S-CN bond can be obtained whose quality is at least as good as that of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed directly from the thiol analogue of C12SCN, dodecanethiol (C12SH). However, the achievable quality is strikingly dependent on the purity of the thiocyanate with even low levels of contamination impeding the formation of structurally well-defined monolayers.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of two omega-(4'-methylbiphenyl-4-yl)alkanethiols (CH(3)(C(6)H(4))(2)(CH(2))(n)SH, BPn, n = 4, 6) on Au(111) substrates, prepared from solution at room temperature and subsequently annealed at temperatures up to 493 K under a nitrogen atmosphere, were studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HRXPS), and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS). In striking contrast to BPn SAMs with n = odd, for which only one phase is observed, the even-numbered BPn SAMs exhibit polymorphism. Irreversible phase transitions occur which involve three phases differing substantially in density and stability. Upon annealing, BP4 and BP6 transform into a beta-phase, which is characterized by an exceptionally high structural quality with virtually defect-free domains exceeding 500 nm in diameter. Exchange experiments, monitored by contact angle measurement, reveal that the beta-phase exhibits a dramatically improved stability. The fundamental differences in the phase behavior of even- and odd-numbered BPn SAMs are discussed in terms of two design strategies based on cooperative and competitive effects.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 4-acetamino-4'-(4-mercaptobutoxy)azobenzene (CH3)CONH-ph-N=N-ph-O(CH2)(4)SH, abbr. aaAzoC4SH) and 4-mercaptobutoxy azobenzene (ph-N=N-ph-O(CH2)(4)SH, abbr. AzoC4SH) on a gold surface have been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), FT Raman spectroscopy, and electrochemistry. A surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active system with a "sandwiched" structure of Ag/R-Azo-C4S-/Au was conveniently obtained by the method of Tollen's test. The relationship between the SERS effect and the structural nature of the system indicates that the enhancement correlates to both the silver islands above and the gold substrate underneath. The redox behaviors of the self-assembly on gold electrodes showed that the SAMs of the two compounds exhibit well-behaved voltammetric responses in a Britton-Robinson buffer corresponding to the irreversible two-electron, two-proton reduction-oxidation of azobenzene. The apparent electron-transfer rate kinetics is very sluggish, and the rate constant k(app) of aaAzoC4SH/Au (1.34 x 10(-6) s(-1)) is lower than that of AzoC4SH/Au (1.63 x 10(-4) s(-1)), which may be attributed to the different spatial restriction of close-packing structures on the conformational change accompanied by electron and proton transfer in the SAMs.  相似文献

Alkanethiols, CH3(CH2)(n-1)SH, are shown to react readily with HF-treated Ge(111) surface at room temperature to form a high-quality monolayer. The resulting films are characterized by using contact angle analysis (CAA), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). The octanethiol and octadecanethiol films on Ge(111) both exhibit 101 degrees and 40 degrees water and hexadecane contact angles, respectively. These values indicate that the thiol surface coverage is relatively high, and that the films possess a high degree of orientational ordering. The angle-resolved XPS analysis supports that thiols are bound to the Ge surface by Ge-S bonds at the monolayer/Ge interface. The film thickness values obtained by XPS and SE agree well with the earlier reported values on alkyl monolayers on Ge(111) prepared by Grignard reaction. On the basis of HREEL spectra taken after thermal annealing steps, the monolayers are found to be thermally stable up to 450 K. The thermal stability provides further evidence that thiols are covalently bonded to Ge(111).  相似文献

Pentacene films deposited on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) bearing different terminal functional groups have been studied by reflection-absorption IR, grazing angle XRD, NEXAFS, AFM, and SEM analyses. A film with pentacene molecules nearly perpendicularly oriented was observed on Au surfaces covered with an SAM of alkanethiol derivative of X-(CH2)(n)-SH, with X = -CH(3), -COOH, -OH, -CN, -NH(2), C(60), or an aromatic thiol p-terphenylmethanethiol. On the other hand, a film with the pentacene molecular plane nearly parallel to the substrate surface was found on bare Au surface. A similar molecular orientation was found in thinner ( approximately 5 nm) and thicker (100 nm) deposited films. Films deposited on different surfaces exhibit distinct morphologies: with apparently smaller and rod-shaped grains on clean bare Au surface but larger and islandlike crystals on SAM-modified surfaces. X-ray photoemission electron microscopy (X-PEEM) was used to analyze the orientation of pentacene molecules deposited on a SAM-patterned Au surface. With the micro-NEXAFS spectra and PEEM image analysis, the microarea-selective orientation control on Au was characterized. The ability to control the packing orientation in organic molecular crystals is of great interest in fabricating organic field effect transistors because of the anisotropic nature of charge transport in organic semiconducting materials.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of a bis(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine-substituted thiol (bpp-SH) on Au (111)/mica were studied with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS). Using substrates precoated with perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (PTCDA), preparation at elevated temperatures yields highly ordered layers whose structure is described by a rectangular (5 x radical3) unit cell containing one molecule. The bis(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (bpp) units exhibit pi-stacking along the 112 direction, and they are tilted significantly. We conclude the three imine nitrogen atoms in the bpp headgroup adopt a trans, trans arrangement.  相似文献

The self-assembly of aliphatic thiol (RSH), dithiol (R(SH)(2)), and dithiocarboxylic acid (RS(2)H) onto mildly oxidized and highly oxidized copper was studied in real time by in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Ex situ characterization of the films was carried out using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In situ EIS studies found a very fast adsorption of RSH, R(SH)(2), and RS(2)H (within 10-15 s). This fast adsorption step is followed by the long-term additional adsorption and consolidation of SAM. However, the self-assembly of RS(2)H passes through an intermediate step of molecule rearrangement for around 10 to 30 min after around 2 to 7 min of self-assembly. The binding of both sulfur moieties of R(SH)(2) with Cu happens simultaneous. The oxide reduction capacity of RSH, R(SH)(2), and RS(2)H was good. However, the XPS studies showed the decomposition of RS(2)H-based SAMs to Cu(2)S. Monolayers prepared on both mildly oxidized and heavily oxidized Cu with R(SH)(2) had the highest stability. Monolayers of RS(2)H showed the least stability on both mildly oxidized and heavily oxidized Cu. Although RSH-based SAMs had good organization on both mildly oxidized and highly oxidized Cu, R(SH)(2)-based SAMs did not show good organization in either case. The RS(2)H monolayer had good organization only on mildly oxidized Cu.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) decorated with photoisomerizable azobenzene glycosides are useful tools for investigating the effect of ligand orientation on carbohydrate recognition. However, photoswitching of SAMs between two specific states is characterized by a limited capacity. The goal of this study is the improvement of photoswitchable azobenzene glyco-SAMs. Different concepts, in particular self-dilution and rigid biaryl backbones, have been investigated. The required SH-functionalized azobenzene glycoconjugates were synthesized through a modular approach, and the respective glyco-SAMs were fabricated on Au(111). Their photoswitching properties have been extensively investigated by applying a powerful set of methods (IRRAS, XPS, and NEXAFS). Indeed, the combination of tailor-made biaryl-azobenzene glycosides and suitable diluent molecules led to photoswitchable glyco-SAMs with a significantly enhanced and unprecedented switching capacity.  相似文献

Ligand exchange reactions are widely used for imparting new functionality on or integrating nanoparticles into devices. Thiolate-for-thiolate ligand exchange in monolayer protected gold nanoclusters has been used for over a decade; however, a firm structural basis of this reaction has been lacking. Herein, we present the first single-crystal X-ray structure of a partially exchanged Au(102)(p-MBA)(40)(p-BBT)(4) (p-MBA = para-mercaptobenzoic acid, p-BBT = para-bromobenzene thiol) with p-BBT as the incoming ligand. The crystal structure shows that 2 of the 22 symmetry-unique p-MBA ligand sites are partially exchanged to p-BBT under the initial fast kinetics in a 5 min timescale exchange reaction. Each of these ligand-binding sites is bonded to a different solvent-exposed Au atom, suggesting an associative mechanism for the initial ligand exchange. Density functional theory calculations modeling both thiol and thiolate incoming ligands postulate a mechanistic pathway for thiol-based ligand exchange. The discrete modification of a small set of ligand binding sites suggests Au(102)(p-MBA)(44) as a powerful platform for surface chemical engineering.  相似文献

In-situ spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) was utilized to examine the formation of the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of the water-soluble oligo(ethylene oxide) [OEO] disulfide [S(CH(2)CH(2)O)(6)CH(3)](2) {[S(EO)(6)](2)} and two analogous thiols - HS(CH(2)CH(2)O)(6)CH(3) {(EO)(6)} and HS(CH(2))(3)O(CH(2)CH(2)O)(5)CH(3) {C(3)(EO)(5)} - on Au from aqueous solutions. Kinetic data for all compounds follow simple Langmuirian models with the disulfide reaching a self-limiting final state (d=1.2nm) more rapidly than the full coverage final states of the thiol analogs (d=2.0nm). The in-situ ellipsometric thicknesses of all compounds were found to be nearly identical to earlier ex-situ ellipsometric measurements suggesting similar surface coverages and structural models in air and under water. Exposure to bovine serum albumin (BSA) shows the self-limiting (d=1.2nm) [S(EO)(6)](2) SAMs to be the most highly protein resistant surfaces relative to bare Au and completely-formed SAMs of the two analogous thiols and octadecanethiol (ODT). When challenged with up to near physiological levels of BSA (2.5mg/mL), protein adsorption on the final state [S(EO)(6)](2) SAM was only 3% of that which adsorbed to the bare Au and ODT SAMs.  相似文献

Thioctic acid (alpha-lipoic acid) is a molecule with a large disulfide-containing base, a short alkyl chain with four CH2 units, and a carboxyl termination. Self-assembled monolayer (SAM) films ofthioctic acid adsorbed on Au(111) have been investigated with near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to determine film quality, bonding, and morphology. Using standard preparation protocols for SAMs, that is, dissolving thioctic acid in ethanol and exposing gold to the solution, results in poor films. These films are highly disordered, contain a mixture of carboxyl and carboxylate terminations, have more than monolayer coverage, and exhibit unbound disulfide. Conversely, forming films by dissolving 1 mmol thioctic acid into 5% acetic acid in ethanol (as previously reported with carboxyl-terminated alkanethiols) forms ordered monolayers with small amounts of unbound sulfur. NEXAFS indicates tilted over endgroups with the carboxyl group normal on average 38 degrees from the surface normal. Slight angle-dependent intensity modulations in other features indicate alkyl chains statistically more upright than prostrate on the surface. Reflection-absorption Fourier transform infrared (RA-FTIR) spectra indicate hydrogen bonding between neighboring molecules. In such well-formed monolayers, a stark reorientation occurs upon deprotonation of the endgroup by rinsing in a KOH solution. The carboxylate plane normal is now about 66 degrees from sample normal, a much more upright orientation. Data indicate this reorientation may also cause a more upright orientation to the alkyl portion of the molecules.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed from semifluorinated dialkyldiselenol (CF(3)(CF(2))(5)(CH(2))(2)Se-)(2) (F6H2SeSeH2F6) on polycrystalline Au(111) and Ag(111) were characterized by high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and contact angle measurements. The Se-Se linkage of F6H2SeSeH2F6 was found to be cleaved upon the adsorption, followed by the formation of selenolate-metal bond. The resulting F6H2Se SAMs are well-ordered, densely packed, and contamination-free. The packing density of these films is governed by the bulky fluorocarbon part, which exhibits the expected helical conformation. A noncommensurate hexagonal arrangement of the F6H2Se molecules with an average nearest-neighbor spacing of about 5.8 +/- 0.2 A, close to the van der Waals diameter the fluorocarbon chain, was observed on Au(111). The orientation of the fluorocarbon chains in the F6H2Se SAMs does not depend on the substrate-the average tilt angle of these moieties was estimated to be about 21-22 degrees on both Au and Ag.  相似文献

A novel kind of ethylene-ferrocenyl dodecyl thiol bearing an electron-withdrawing pyridium group (FcCH=CH-Py(CH2)10SH) was synthesized and mixed with HOOCC(10)SH on an Au electrode to form mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) in ethanol solution. The influence of the water content of acetonitrile on the electrochemistry of the SAMs was studied by cyclic voltammetry and ac voltammetry measurement. The results showed that the current decreased and the oxidation potential of the ferrocene group shifted negatively with increasing water content of acetonitrile.  相似文献

Subphthalocyaninatoboron complexes with six long‐chain alkylthio substituents in their periphery are applicable for the formation of self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold. Such films are prepared from solution with the axially chlorido‐substituted derivatives and characterised by near‐edge X‐ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS). The results are in accord with the formation of SAMs assembled by the chemisorption of both covalently bound thiolate‐type as well as coordinatively bound thioether units. The adsorbate molecules adopt an essentially flat adsorption geometry on the substrate, resembling a suction pad on a surface.  相似文献

Adsorption states of dioctyl dichalcogenides (dioctyl disulfide, dioctyl diselenide, and dioctyl ditelluride) arranged on Au(111) have been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), infrared-visible sum-frequency generation (SFG), and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). XPS measurements suggest that dioctyl dichalcogenides dissociatively adsorbed on Au(111) surfaces to form the corresponding monolayers having chalcogen-gold covalent bonds. The elemental compositions of octanechalcogenolates on Au(111) indicate that the saturation coverages of the octyl heavy chalcogenolate (OcSe, OcTe) monolayers are lower than that of the octanethiolate (OcS) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The SFG observations of the CH(2) vibrational bands for the heavy chalcogenolate monolayers strongly suggest that a discernible amount of gauche conformation exists in the monolayers, while OcS SAMs adopt highly ordered all-trans conformation. The intensity ratio of the symmetric and asymmetric CH(3) stretching vibration modes measured by SFG shows that the average tilt angle of the methyl group of the OcSe monolayers is greater than that of the OcS SAMs. The larger tilt angle of the methyl group and the existence of a discernible amount of gauche conformation in the OcSe monolayers are due to the lower surface coverage of the OcSe monolayers compared with the OcS SAMs. The smaller polarization dependence in the angle-resolved UPS (ARUPS) spectra of the OcSe monolayers than that of the OcS SAMs is caused by the more disordered structures of the alkyl chain in the former. XPS, SFG, and ARUPS measurements indicate a similar tendency for the OcTe monolayers. The density of states (DOS) observed by UPS at around 1.3 eV for OcS adsorbed on Au(111) is considered to be the antibonding state of the Au-sulfur bond. Similar DOS is also observed by UPS at around 1.0 eV for the OcSe monolayers and at approximately 1.6 eV for the OcTe monolayers on Au(111).  相似文献

Electronic structures and spectroscopic properties of the binuclear head-to-tail [Au(2)(PH(2)CH(2)SH)(2)](2+) (1) complex were investigated by ab initio calculations. The solvent effect of the complex in the acetonitrile solution was taken into account by the weakly solvated [Au(2)(PH(2)CH(2)SH)(2)](2+).(MeCN)(2) (2) moiety in the calculations. The ground-state geometries of 1 and 2 were fully optimized by the MP2 method, while their excited-state structures were optimized by the CIS method. Aurophilic attraction apparently exists between the two Au(I) atoms in the ground state and is strongly enhanced in the excited state. A high-energy phosphorescent emission was calculated at 337 nm for 1 in the absence of the interactions with solvent molecules and/or counteranion in solid state; however the lowest-energy emission of 2 was obtained at 614 nm with the nature of (3)A(u)(s(sigma)) --> (1)A(g)(d(sigma)) (metal-centered, MC) transition. The coordination of acetonitrile to the gold atom in solution results in a dramatic red shift of emission wavelength. The investigations on the head-to-tail [Au(2)(PH(2)CH(2)SCH(3))(2)](2+) (5) and [Au(2)(PH(2)CH(2)SCH(3))(2)](2+).(MeCN)(2) (6) moieties indicate that the CH(3) substituent on the S atom causes blue shifts of emission wavelength for 5 and 6 with respect to 1 and 2. By comparison between Au(I) thioether 1 and head-to-tail Au(I) thiolate [Au(2)(PH(2)CH(2)S)(2)] (7), it is concluded that the S-->Au dative bonding results in evidently different transition characteristics from the S-Au covalent bonding in the Au(I) thioether/thiolate complexes.  相似文献

Diamondoids, hydrocarbon molecules with cubic-diamond-cage structures, have unique properties with potential value for nanotechnology. The availability and ability to selectively functionalize this special class of nanodiamond materials opens new possibilities for surface modification, for high-efficiency field emitters in molecular electronics, as seed crystals for diamond growth, or as robust mechanical coatings. The properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of diamondoids are thus of fundamental interest for a variety of emerging applications. This paper presents the effects of thiol substitution position and polymantane order on diamondoid SAMs on gold using near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A framework to determine both molecular tilt and twist through NEXAFS is presented and reveals highly ordered diamondoid SAMs, with the molecular orientation controlled by the thiol location. C 1s and S 2p binding energies are lower in adamantane thiol than alkane thiols on gold by 0.67 +/- 0.05 and 0.16 +/- 0.04 eV, respectively. These binding energies vary with diamondoid monolayer structure and thiol substitution position, consistent with different degrees of steric strain and electronic interaction with the substrate. This work demonstrates control over the assembly, in particular the orientational and electronic structure, providing a flexible design of surface properties with this exciting new class of diamond nanoparticles.  相似文献
