Ubiquitous networks and their applications

Improvements in microprocessor and radio technologies have led to an increasing interest in wireless networking. At the same time, personal digital electronics have become widespread. To the enthusiast these two trends immediately bring to mind a wide range of esoteric applications. Commercially, by contrast, few substantial applications for embedded wireless networks have been proposed. This article describes the Prototype Embedded Network (PEN), a short-range low-power wireless network specifically designed to be a ubiquitous first point of contact between any and every kind of device. We describe some of the key technical issues encountered in PEN's development and illustrate these by example with applications we have built.     

Considerations on analog and digital electronic switching networks and their applications

It is expected that electronics will play a major role in the next decades in the implementation of switching networks for telephone exchanges, as it has already happened both in transmission and exchange control [1]. Making use of many results of the referenced literature, some considerations are presented in order to compare electronic analog and digital switching networks for telephone exchanges. Some of the highlighted aspects show the more significant tradeoffs to be considered when choosing an electronic switching network. Electromechanical switching is not considered here, but some reference is made when necessary. After some preliminary analysis of the telephony signals and their impact on the design and the characteristics of the switching networks, typical problems of practical relevance are then considered. Furthermore, a general comparison between the various techniques is discussed from an economical point of view, with reference to local and transit application areas.

Excilamps and their applications

The design and practical applications of excilamps having a dielectric barrier and capacitive structure and driven by nanosecond, high voltage pulses are described. A simple design lamp having forced cooling and an excitation generator was demonstrated to have a lifetime of more than one thousand hours. The results of an experimental study of capacitive and high voltage nanosecond discharge-driven excilamps are presented. The influence of the excitation regime and operating gas mixture pressure on the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) driven excilamps' efficiency is discussed. The discharge formation and output radiation dynamics of DBD driven excilamps was experimentally studied for the first time.The practical applications of several lamps designed in the High Current Electronics Institute, Tomsk, Russia to photochemistry, photobiology and photomedicine are discussed.

Sampling of French local networks and applications

In this paper the authors describe a study in progress by which it is intended to represent all the French local telephone networks by just a small number of typical cases. The objectives are firstly, to gain a better knowledge of the existing network and secondly, to be able to compare equipment policies by simulating the evolution of the sample networks. The representative areas were chosen by original data analysis methods (principal component analysis followed by classification and choice of samples). Detailed data appertaining to the sample areas were then collected. They give examples of overall statistical results extrapolated at national level and discuss the corresponding applications. Lastly, they consider further developments of the study.     

Multifrequency lasers and applications in WDM networks

The current status and applications of multifrequency lasers (MFL) are reviewed. An MFL consists of an array of N optical amplifiers monolithically integrated with a 1×N optical multiplexer. The laser provides the functionality of N independent lasers whose optical wavelengths are precisely locked together by the common intracavity optical multiplexer. The design of an MFL together with its fundamental characteristics are discussed, and state-of-the-art results are shown. The functionality of an MFL is compared to that of an integrated DFB array. Finally, we show some applications of single-wavelength tunable transmitters and multiwavelength transmitters     

Digital radio networks: Technology and applications

The application of packet-radio for data communications is emerging worldwide. Its economic and technical advantages provide a unique opportunity for all countries, but especially for developing nations, to meet their data transmission needs. The system can be used for point-of-sale credit/debit authorizations, ATM transactions, lottery networks, and hotel and airline reservations. Other applications will emerge as the system continues to evolve.     

Modified wavelets and their applications

Wavelets obtained from known orthonormal wavelets modified by the impulse response of a stationary linear system are proposed. It is shown that the new wavelets offer additional possibilities for signal processing in the presence of noise. In particular, these wavelets provide for estimation of linearly transformed signals and simultaneous suppression of the noise effect. Filter banks that realize fast computational algorithms are synthesized. The wavelet approach is exemplified by solution of deconvolution, decorrelation, and differentiation problems.

Double-sided MICs and their applications

The basic concept and features are presented of double-sided microwave integrated circuits (double-sided MICs), which effectively utilize various kinds of transmission lines on both sides of a substrate. The fundamental circuits such as 180° hybrids (magic Ts) and many application circuits described here are very useful in developing microwave and millimeter-wave band equipment. The concept of the double-sided MIC technique is also suitable for application to monolithic MICs     

Superconducting magnets and their applications

Since the discovery of superconductivity almost a century ago, there has been a steady increase in the variety of superconducting magnet applications. Progress in superconducting magnet technology has resulted in applications in areas of basic science, medicine, separation, and levitation. Performance improvements in a variety of materials, from low-temperature to high-temperature superconductors, are the foundation of recent rapid development. In addition, large increases in affordable computing power, along with steady refinement of three-dimensional analytical tools and improved materials characterization, have allowed many more advanced magnet concepts to be realized directly in hardware without scale prototype testing than was previously possible. This in turn has broadened opportunities for new science and technology results in many fields including the basic sciences, medical imaging, fusion, environmental remediation, and transportation. In this paper, a few examples of these applications will be discussed, representing a range in magnetic field, current density, and overall size, from the practical to the developmental.     

Genetic algorithms and their applications

This article introduces the genetic algorithm (GA) as an emerging optimization algorithm for signal processing. After a discussion of traditional optimization techniques, it reviews the fundamental operations of a simple GA and discusses procedures to improve its functionality. The properties of the GA that relate to signal processing are summarized, and a number of applications, such as IIR adaptive filtering, time delay estimation, active noise control, and speech processing, that are being successfully implemented are described     

Single-electron devices and their applications

The goal of this paper is to review in brief the basic physics of single-election devices, as well as their-current and prospective applications. These devices based on the controllable transfer of single electrons between small conducting “islands”, have already enabled several important scientific experiments. Several other applications of analog single-election devices in unique scientific instrumentation and metrology seem quite feasible. On the other hand, the prospect of silicon transistors being replaced by single-electron devices in integrated digital circuits faces tough challenges and remains uncertain. Nevertheless, even if this replacement does not happen, single electronics will continue to play an important role by shedding light on the fundamental size limitations of new electronic devices. Moreover, recent research in this field has generated some by-product ideas which may revolutionize random-access-memory and digital-data-storage technologies
