Conventional polymers such as thermoplastics or duromers are insulators. Conjugated polymers like polyacetylene, polypyrrol or polyaniline are insulators as well when in the parent state. However, they can change into „highways for electrons”︁ after moderate oxidation or reduction. The article describes the synthesis of some polyenes and polyarylenes, the physical background of their insulating and electrically conducting state, respectively, as well as some potential applications of these so-called „synthetic metals”︁.

Zusammenfassung Der Lithiumgehalt von Salzmutterlaugen läßt sich flammenphotometriseh nach Abscheidung des Kochsalzes mit Chlorwasserstoffgas ermitteln. Hiezu dient ein einfaches Eichverfahren auf der Grundlage der Zumischung bekannter Lithiummengen, entsprechend einem Internal-Standard-Verfahren. Resultate der Untersuchung österreichischer Salinen-Mutterlaugen zeigen die Brauchbarkeit der Methode,

Summary The lithium content of brine mother liquors may be determined by the flame photometer after the sodium chloride has been removed by means of hydrogen chloride gas. A simplified calibrating process is used, based on the addition of known amounts of lithium corresponding to an internal standard procedure. The usability of these methods is demonstrated by the results of the investigation of Austrian saltworks mother liquors.

Résumé La teneur en lithium d'eaux mères de salines peut être déterminée par photométrie de flamme, après séparation du chlorure de sodium par action de l'acide chlorhydrique gazeux. A cette fin, on met en uvre une technique d'étalonnage très simple reposant sur l'addition de quantités connues de lithium ayant effet d'étalon interne. Les résultats des recherches effectuées sur les eaux-mères de salines autrichiennes ont montré l'intérêt de la méthode.

Zur Frage Der Reversibilitát Der Sauerstoffreduktion an Quecksilberelektroden in Losungen von Alkalihydroxiden

Abstract

Oxygen formed electrolytically from hydrogen peroxide at the surface of the dropping mercury electrode was determined and the charge needed for its electrolysis measured. The yield is about 50% of the theory, which indicates oxide formation. This is supported by formation of black precipitate on dropped off mercury. Reduction of oxygen in alkaline media is thus not a simple reversible process, but complicated by mercury oxide formation, similarly as on solid electrodes.
