Surfactant outgrowth during dissolution as myelin figures, which happens on contact with water, is of prime importance in emulsification and detergency. Micro-Raman investigation of different lyotropic phases formed during dissolution of aerosol-OT (bis 2-ethylhexyl sulfosuccinate) in water during myelin formation reveals the flexible arrangement of the surfactant bilayers in myelin. The conformation around CC-CS bond and the hydrocarbon chains of aerosol-OT in the different liquid crystalline phases were identified from the fingerprints of CC-CS stretching, C-C stretching, C-H bending, and stretching frequencies. Existence of mixture of trans and gauche conformations around CC-CS bond and that of the hydrocarbon chains in myelin supports the fluid nature of bilayers by which it is made. Similar conformations of hydrocarbon chains in lamellar phase and in myelin support the concept of myelins being rolled up lamella. The observations are in line with the disorderness of the hydrocarbon chains in the bilayers of phospholipids that has been reported earlier. From the C-C stretching frequencies at the root of myelins, the kinked structure of the hydrocarbon chain is identified, and loose packing of molecules which would facilitate water transport across membranes is evident.  相似文献

Phosphorus functionalized trimeric alanine compounds (l)- and (d)-P(CH(2)NHCH(CH(3))COOH)(3) 2 are prepared in 90% yields by the Mannich reaction of Tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphine 1 with (l)- or (d)- Alanine in aqueous media. The hydration properties of (l)-2 and (d)-2 in water and water-methanol mixtures are described. The crystal structure analysis of (l)-2.4H(2)O, reveals that the alanine molecules pack to form two-dimensional bilayers running parallel to (001). The layered structural motif depicts two closely packed monolayers of 2 each oriented with its phosphorus atoms projected at the center of the bilayer and adjacent monolayers are held together by hydrogen bonds between amine and carboxylate groups. The water bilayers are juxtaposed with the H-bonded alanine trimers leading to 18-membered (H(2)O)(18) water rings. Exposure of aqueous solution of (l)-2 and (d)-2 to methanol vapors resulted in closely packed (l)-2 and (d)-2 solvated with mixed water-methanol (H(2)O)(15)(CH(3)OH)(3) clusters. The O-O distances in the mixed methanol-water clusters of (l)-2.3H(2)O.CH(3)OH and (d)-2.3H(2)O.CH(3)OH (O-O(average) = 2.857 A) are nearly identical to the O-O distance observed in the supramolecular (H(2)O)(18) water structure (O-O(average) = 2.859 A) implying the retention of the hydrogen bonded structure in water despite the accommodation of hydrophobic methanol groups within the supramolecular (H(2)O)(15)(CH(3)OH)(3) framework. The O-O distances in (l)-2.3H(2)O.CH(3)OH and (d)-2.3H(2)O.CH(3)OH and in (H(2)O)(18) are very close to the O-O distance reported for liquid water (2.85 A).  相似文献

We present a unique analysis tool for the selective detection of local water inside soft molecular assemblies (hydrophobic cores, vesicular bilayers, and micellar structures) suspended in bulk water. Through the use of dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), the (1)H NMR signal of water is amplified, as it interacts with stable radicals that possess approximately 658 times higher spin polarization. We utilized stable nitroxide radicals covalently attached along the hydrophobic tail of stearic acid molecules that incorporate themselves into surfactant-based micelle or vesicle structures. Here, we present a study of local water content and fluid viscosity inside oleate micelles and vesicles and Triton X-100 micelles to serve as model systems for soft molecular assemblies. This approach is unique because the amplification of the NMR signal is performed in bulk solution and under ambient conditions with site-specific spin labels that only detect the water that is directly interacting with the localized spin labels. Continuous wave (cw) electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis provides rotational dynamics of the spin-labeled molecular chain segments and local polarity parameters that can be related to hydration properties, whereas we show that DNP-enhanced (1)H NMR analysis of fluid samples directly provides translational water dynamics and permeability of the local environment probed by the spin label. Our technique therefore has the potential to become a powerful analysis tool, complementary to cw ESR, to study hydration characteristics of surfactant assemblies, lipid bilayers, or protein aggregates, where water dynamics is a key parameter of their structure and function. In this study, we find that there is significant penetration of water inside the oleate micelles with a higher average local water viscosity ( approximately 1.8 cP) than in bulk water, and Triton X-100 micelles and oleate vesicle bilayers mostly exclude water while allowing for considerable surfactant chain motion and measurable water permeation through the soft structure.  相似文献

A single pulse interferometric coherent anti-Stokes Raman (CARS) spectroscopy method is used to obtain broadband CARS spectra and microscopy images of liquid and polymer samples. The pump, Stokes, and probe pulses are all selected inside a single broadband ultrafast pulse by a phase- and polarization-controlled pulse shaping technique and used to generate two spectral interference CARS signals simultaneously. The normalized difference of these two signals provides an amplified background-free broadband resonant CARS spectrum over the 400-1500 cm(-1) range with 35 cm(-1) spectral resolution. Chemically selective microscopy images of multicomponent polymer and liquid samples are investigated with this new CARS method. Multiplex CARS spectra at 10,000 spatial points are measured within a few minutes, and used to construct chemically selective microscopy images with a spatial resolution of 400 nm. The spectral bandwidth limits, sensitivity, homodyne amplification advantages, spatial resolution, depolarization, chromatic aberration, and chemical imaging aspects of this new technique are discussed in detail.  相似文献

Langmuir monolayers and LB films of the ring-shaped mixed-valence polyoxomolybdate [Mo142O429H10(H2O)49(CH3CO2)5(CH3CH2CO2)](30-) (Mo142) dissolved in the aqueous subphase have been successfully fabricated by using the adsorption properties of a DODA monolayer. Infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy of the LB films indicates that Mo142 and DODA molecules are incorporated within these LB films. X-ray reflectivity experiments indicate that the LB films exhibit a well-defined lamellar structure formed by bilayers of DODA molecules alternating with monolayers of Mo142. Using behenic acid-modified hydrophobic quartz substrate is critical for the formation of the well-defined lamellar structure. From the values of the periodicity obtained by these experiments it is clear that the Mo142 clusters lie flat along the charged organic layers. AFM images also showed the flat and homogeneous films on the quartz substrates treated with behenic acid. Cyclic voltammograms of Mo142-LB films deposited on ITO substrates showed quasi-reversible oxidation/reduction waves with positive shift of the potential compared to the case of solution.  相似文献

Large molecular clusters can be considered as intermediate states between gas and condensed phases, and information about them can help us understand condensed phases. In this paper, ab initio quantum mechanical methods have been used to examine clusters formed of methanol and water molecules. The main goal was to obtain information about the intermolecular interactions and the structure of methanol/water clusters at the molecular level. The large clusters (CH(4)O...(H(2)O)(12) and H(2)O...(CH(4)O)(10)) containing one molecule of one component (methanol or water) and many (12, 10) molecules of the other component were considered. M?ller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) was used in the calculations. Several representative cluster geometries were optimized, and nearest-neighbor interaction energies were calculated for the geometries obtained in the first step. The results of the calculations were compared to the available experimental information regarding the liquid methanol/water mixtures and to the molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations, and good agreement was found. For the CH(4)O...(H(2)O)(12) cluster, it was shown that the molecules of water can be subdivided into two classes: (i) H bonded to the central methanol molecule and (ii) not H bonded to the central methanol molecule. As expected, these two classes exhibited striking energy differences. Although they are located almost the same distance from the carbon atom of the central methanol molecule, they possess very different intermolecular interaction energies with the central molecule. The H bonding constitutes a dominant factor in the hydration of methanol in dilute aqueous solutions. For the H(2)O...(CH(4)O)(10) cluster, it was shown that the central molecule of water has almost three H bonds with the methanol molecules; this result differs from those in the literature that concluded that the average number of H bonds between a central water molecule and methanol molecules in dilute solutions of water in methanol is about two, with the water molecules being incorporated into the chains of methanol. In contrast, the present predictions revealed that the central water molecule is not incorporated into a chain of methanol molecules, but it can be the center of several (2-3) chains of methanol molecules. The molecules of methanol, which are not H bonded to the central water molecule, have characteristics similar to those of the methane molecules around a central water molecule in the H(2)O...(CH(4))(10) cluster. The ab initio quantum mechanical methods employed in this paper have provided detailed information about the H bonds in the clusters investigated. In particular, they provided full information about two types of H bonds between water and methanol molecules (in which the water or the methanol molecule is the proton donor), including information about their energies and lengths. The average numbers of the two types of H bonds in the CH(4)O...(H(2)O)(12) and H(2)O...(CH(4)O)(10) clusters have been calculated. Such information could hardly be obtained with the simulation methods.  相似文献

We demonstrate the use of new two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance experiments in the examination of local diffusional anisotropy under conditions of global isotropy. The methods, known as diffusion-diffusion correlation spectroscopy and diffusion exchange spectroscopy, employ successive pairs of magnetic field gradient pulses, with signal analysis using two-dimensional inverse Laplace transformation. Diffusional anisotropy is measured for water molecules in a polydomain lamellar phase lyotropic liquid crystal, 40 wt % nonionic surfactant C10E3 (C10H21O(CH2CH2O)6H) in H2O.  相似文献

The aqueous behavior of an ester-modified cationic amphiphile with the molecular structure CH3CH2O(C=O)(CH2)6(C=O)O(CH2)8N+(CH3)3Br-, in the following referred to as A, has been investigated. Systems with A as the only solute, as well as different aqueous mixtures with conventional cationic surfactants, primarily dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), were included in the study. Isotropic solution samples were characterized using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, NMR diffusometry, and conductivity measurements, whereas liquid crystalline samples were investigated by optical polarization microscopy and small-angle X-ray diffraction. The results are compared to the behavior of the binary system of DTAB and water. A does not exhibit a typical surfactant behavior. When it is present as the only solute in a binary aqueous system, it forms neither conventional micelles nor liquid crystalline phases. However, there is clear evidence that it assembles with lower cooperativity into loose clusters at concentrations above 25-30 mM. When A is mixed with DTAB in solution, the two amphiphiles form mixed assemblies, the structure of which varies with the total amphiphile concentration. In concentrated mixtures with alkyltrimethylammonium surfactants, A can participate in hexagonal liquid crystalline phases even when it constitutes a significant fraction of the total amphiphile content.  相似文献

A Ca(2+) -ligand-coordinated vesicle phase was prepared from a mixture of tetradecyldimethylamine oxide (C14DMAO) and calcium tetradecylamidomethyl sulfate [(CH3(CH2)13NHCOCH2OSO3)2Ca] in aqueous solution. At the appropriate mixing ratios, Ca(2+) -ligand coordination results in the formation of molecular bilayers because Ca(2+) can firmly bind to the head groups of C14DMAO and (CH3(CH2)13NHCOCH2OSO3)2Ca by complexation which reduces the area of head group. In this system, no counterions in aqueous solution exist because of the Ca(2+) -ligand coordination, and the bilayer membranes are not shielded by salts, i.e., a salt-free but charged molecular bilayer. The structures of the birefringent solutions of (CH3(CH2)13NHCOCH2OSO3)2Ca and C14DMAO mixtures were determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and rheological measurements, demonstrating that the birefringent sample solutions consist of vesicles. The Ca(2+) -ligand complex vesicle phase was used as a microreactor to prepare calcium oxalate (CaC2O4) crystals. Dimethyl oxalate, as a precursor, can hydrolyze to oxalic acid and methanol. Oxalic acid should precipitate Ca(2+) ions binding to the head groups of C14DMAO and (CH3(CH2)13NHCOCH2OSO3)2Ca to produce CaC2O4 crystals (Ca(2+) + H2C2O4 --> CaC2O4 (downward arrow) + 2H+). The obtained particles were CaC2O4 monohydrate, which were dominated by (020) faces. CaC2O4 precipitates were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis. After removal of CaC2O4 precipitates, a new cationic and anionic (catanionic) vesicle phase was constructed through electrostatic interaction between cationic C14DMAOH+ (C14DMAO + H+ --> C14DMAOH+) and anionic CH3(CH12)13 NHCOCH2OSO3-.  相似文献

Adsorption of methyl chloride and coadsorption of CH3Cl and D2O on Pd(111) surfaces at T=100 K have been studied under ultrahigh-vacuum conditions using femtosecond sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy in the spectral regions of CH and OD bands. On the bare Pd(111) substrate, the CH3Cl coverage dependence of the resonant SFG signal is consistent with a progressive molecular rearrangement starting at half saturation followed by the growth of two ordered monolayers in which the molecular axes are perpendicular to the surface. When CH3Cl is adsorbed on top of predeposited D2O on Pd(111), the SFG signals as a function of the CH3Cl exposure indicate that methyl chloride is adsorbed onto D2O through hydrogen bonding. On the contrary when the adsorption order is reversed the strong decrease of the CH3 signal as a function of the D2O exposure is explained by assuming that water molecules penetrate inside the CH3Cl layers, leading to the formation of disordered CH3Cl clusters. In all cases a nonresonant contribution due to molecular adsorption is observed and it shows a dependence upon surface structure and coverage significantly different from that of the resonant vibrational bands.  相似文献

The adsorption and decomposition of water on Ge(100) have been investigated using real-time scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. The STM results revealed two distinct adsorption features of H2O on Ge(100) corresponding to molecular adsorption and H-OH dissociative adsorption. In the molecular adsorption geometry, H2O molecules are bound to the surface via Ge-O dative bonds between the O atom of H2O and the electrophilic down atom of the Ge dimer. In the dissociative adsorption geometry, the H2O molecule dissociates into H and OH, which bind covalently to a Ge-Ge dimer on Ge(100) in an H-Ge-Ge-OH configuration. The DFT calculations showed that the dissociative adsorption geometry is more stable than the molecular adsorption geometry. This finding is consistent with the STM results, which showed that the dissociative product becomes dominant as the H2O coverage is increased. The simulated STM images agreed very well with the experimental images. In the real-time STM experiments, we also observed a structural transformation of the H2O molecule from the molecular adsorption to the dissociative adsorption geometry.  相似文献

The hydrogen-bonded clusters of 2-fluoropyridine with water were studied experimentally in a supersonic free jet and analyzed with molecular orbital calculations. The IR spectra of 2-fluoropyridine-(H2O)(n) (n = 1 to 3) clusters were observed with a fluorescence detected infrared depletion (FDIR) technique in the OH and CH stretching vibrational regions. The frequencies of OH stretching vibrations show that water molecules bond to the nitrogen atom of 2-fluoropyridine in the clusters. The hydrogen-bond formation between aromatic CH and O was evidenced in the 1:2 and 1:3 clusters from the experimental and calculated results. The overtone vibrations of the OH bending mode in hydrogen-bonded water molecules appear in the IR spectra, and these frequencies become higher with the increase of the number of water molecules in the clusters. The band structure of the IR spectra in the CH stretching region changes depending on the number of coordinating water molecules.  相似文献

We report here the first pentanuclear Ba(II) complex of a new tri-aza, tri-oxa macrocycle with two carboxymethyl "arms" pending from two N atoms, H2L2. The crystal structure corresponds to the formula [Ba5(H0.375L2)4(ClO4)(CH3CH2OH)(H2O)2](ClO4)2.5 x 9.5H2O and reveals the presence of four molecules of the ligand surrounding five Ba(II) ions, giving rise to an unusual structure with the metal ions inside a spherical organic cavity.  相似文献

The interfacial behavior of the newly designed Fluorocarbon Hydrocarbon Cationic Lipid (FHCL or CH(3)(CH(2))(17)N(+)(C(2)H(5))(2)(CH(2))(3)(CF(2))(7)CF(3)I(-)) and its mixtures with a phospholipid (DPPC, Dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine) at different mole fractions were investigated. This new molecule was synthesized to mimic the selected properties of lung surfactant, which is a natural lipid-protein mixture which is known to play important roles in the process of respiration, by considering the structure/function relation of lung surfactant protein (SP-C). Each segment in the molecular structure was selected to affect the molecular level interaction at the interface whereas the keeping the overall structure as simple as possible. The surface pressure area isotherms obtained for the mixtures of DPPC/FHCL indicated that there was repulsive interaction between DPPC and FHCL molecules. Due to the molecular level interaction, specifically at mole fraction 0.3, the isotherm obtained from that mixture resembled the isotherm obtained from the DPPC monolayer in the presence of SP-C. High elasticity of the interface was one of the important parameters for the respiration process, therefore, shear and dilatational elasticities of two-component systems were determined and they were found to be similar to the case where SP-C protein is present. Fluorescence microscopy images were taken in order to investigate the monolayer in details. The FHCL was able to fluidize the DPPC monolayer even at high surface pressures effectively. In addition, the cyclic compression-expansion isotherms were obtained to understand the spreading and re-spreading ability of the pure FHCL and the mixed DPPC/FHCL monolayers. At a specific mole fraction, X(FHCL)=0.3, the mixture exhibited good hysteresis in area, compressibility, recruitment index and re-spreading ability at the interface. All these results point out that FHCL can fulfill the selected features of the lung surfactant that are attributed to the presence of SP-C protein when mixed with DPPC, even if the molecular structure of the FHCL is quite simple.  相似文献

The consequences of including amide bonds into the structure of short-chain nonionic surfactants have been studied. Of particular interest were the possible effects of the hydrogen bonding ability of the amide group on the micellar shape. The aggregate structure and hydration of two different amide-containing surfactants, C7H15CO-NH-(CH2CH2O)4H and C7H15CO-(NH-C3H6-CO)2N(CH3)2, were investigated using NMR diffusometry (pulsed gradient spin echo NMR) as the main technique. Data from experiments on the surfactants, the hydrophobic probe molecule hexamethyldisilane (HMDS), and water were interpreted to gain information about the solution structures, and the results were compared to those on a previously studied alcohol ethoxylate surfactant of similar size, C8E4. Both of the amide-containing surfactants form small micelles within the whole investigated concentration range. At the critical micelle concentration, the aggregates are most probably spherical, and with increasing surfactant concentration there are indications of either a minor aggregate growth or agglomeration of the micelles. In addition, it was found that the presence of amide groups in the surfactant inhibits the intermicellar transport of HMDS, which occurs in the C8E4 system. From measurements on water diffusion in the three surfactant systems, it could be concluded that the surfactant hydration is higher when amide bonds are present.  相似文献

The C-H stretch vibrational spectra of the trisiloxane superspreading surfactant Silwet L-77((CH3)3Si-O-Si(CH3)(C3H6)(OCH2CH2)7-8OCH3)-O-Si(CH3)3) at the air/water interface are measured with the surface Sum Frequency Generation Vibrational Spectroscopy (SFG-VS). The spectra are dominated with the features from the –Si-CH3 groups around 2905 cm-1 (symmetric stretch or SS mode) and 2957 cm-1 (mostly the asymmetric stretch or AS mode), and with the weak but apparent contribution from the -O-CH2- groups around 2880 cm-1 (symmetric stretch or SS mode). Comparison of the polarization dependent SFG spectra below and above the critical aggregate or micelle concentration (CAC) indicates that the molecular orientation of the C¡H related molecular groups remained unchanged at different surface densities of the Silwet L-77 surfactant. The SFG-VS adsorption isotherm suggested that there was no sign of Silwet L-77 bilayer structure formation at the air/water interface. The Gibbs adsorption free energy of the Silwet surfactant to the air/water interface is -42.2±0.8kJ/mol, indicating the unusually strong adsorption ability of the Silwet L-77 superspreading surfactant  相似文献

The aggregation of amyloid beta-peptide [Abeta(1-40)] into fibril is a key pathological process associated with Alzheimer's disease. The effect of cationic gemini surfactant hexamethylene-1,6-bis-(dodecyldimethylammonium bromide) [C(12)H(25)(CH(3))(2)N(CH(2))(6)N(CH(3))(2)C(12)H(25)]Br(2) (designated as C(12)C(6)C(12)Br(2)) and single-chain cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) on the Alzheimer amyloid beta-peptide Abeta(1-40) aggregation behavior was studied by microcalorimetry, circular dichroism (CD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements at pH 7.4. Without addition of surfactant, 0.5 g/L Abeta(1-40) mainly exists in dimeric state. It is found that the addition of the monomers of C(12)C(6)C(12)Br(2) and DTAB may cause the rapid aggregation of Abeta(1-40) and the fibrillar structures are observed by CD spectra and the AFM images. Due to the repulsive interaction among the head groups of surfactants and the formation of a small hydrophobic cluster of surfactant molecules, the fibrillar structure is disrupted again as the surfactant monomer concentration is increased, whereas globular species are observed in the presence of micellar solution. Different from single-chain surfactant, C(12)C(6)C(12)Br(2) has a much stronger interaction with Abeta(1-40) to generate larger endothermic energy at much lower surfactant concentration and has much stronger ability to induce the aggregation of Abeta(1-40).  相似文献

The aggregate states of partially fluorinated gemini surfactant [(CF3)2CF(CF2)2(CH2)10N(CH3)2]2(CH2)6Br2 (C(F)(5)C10-C6-C10C(F)(5)) on silica surface were investigated with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and water contact angle (CA) measurement by analyzing the effects of bulk concentration and adsorption time on stack state. On surfactant-adsorbed silica surfaces, there was a flat surface layer interspersed with some scattering surfactant aggregates. In the case of short adsorption times, the aggregates would be hemisphere. In the case of long adsorption times, the aggregates would be present in the form of bilayers. With the increase of bulk concentration, the adsorbed amount was enlarged and the surface layer became more compact. The formation of patchy bilayer aggregates indicated the saturation of the surface layer. Furthermore, organic solvent effects on the aggregate state of the surfactant on a silica surface were studied with four organic solvents, including n-hexane, dehydrated ethanol, 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane, and toluene. With the treatment of different organic solvents, the hemisphere aggregates on the surface layer can rearrange into spherical bilayer, rodlike monolayer, and branched rodlike monolayer aggregates, respectively. The polarity of solvents and affinity of organic solvents for surfactant molecules may have a great impact on the stack state of the fluorinated gemini surfactant molecules.  相似文献

Structural aspects of binding of water cluster and halides in the octaamino cryptand L (1,4,11,14,17,24,29,36-octaazapentacyclo[12.12.12.2.(6,9)2.(19,22)2(31,34)]tetratetraconta-6(43),7,9(44),19(41),20,22(42),31(39),32,34(40)-nonaene, N(CH2CH2NHCH2-p-xylyl-CH2NHCH2CH2)3N) in a protonated state were examined. Crystallographic results show binding of the acyclic quasiplanar water tetramer [H4L(H2O)4](I)4.2.57H2O (1) in a tetraprotonated cryptand L having an iodide counteranion, where two water molecules reside inside the two tren-based cavity, bridged by a third water molecule, and a fourth external water molecule is hydrogen bonded to the bridged water molecule. In the case of complexes [H6L(Br)][(Br)6H].4H2O.2HBr (2) and [H6L(Cl)][(Cl)6H].10.86H2O (3), a single bromide and chloride occupied, respectively, the inside of the cryptand cavity, where L is in a hexaprotonated state. Monotopic recognition of bromide/chloride was observed at the center of the cryptand cavity where halides show C-H...halide interactions instead of the N-H...halide interactions reported in the ditopic complexes of halides with the same cryptand, 5 and 6. Thermal analyses on 1-3 were carried out, and the data obtained distinctly differentiate water cluster complex 1 from the anion-encapsulated cryptates 2 and 3. This study represents the first example of anion-controlled cluster formation inside the cavity of a cryptand.  相似文献
