Aluminium sheet thickness has been calculated from ultrasonic data obtained using a send-receive, radially polarised electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT). Sheets in the thickness range between 0.1 and 0.5 mm have been measured using this non-contact approach at a stand-off of up to 1.5 mm. Normal incidence shear waves generated and detected in the sheet and the resultant waveforms have been processed using transit time measurements and Fourier analysis. Two broad band EMAT systems have been used to perform the measurements with centre frequencies of approximately 5 MHz and frequency content up to 10 and 20 MHz respectively. The most accurate measurements of thickness on thin sheets have been made using Fourier analysis and have yielded measurements accurate to within 0.2% (or 0.4 microm) for 280 microm thick aluminium sheets. Discrete shear wave echoes can be observed for sheets down to a thickness of 250 microm using the higher frequency EMAT system. However temporal measurements of these signals yield lower accuracy results when compared to the Fourier analysis method which is capable of sub-micron accuracy.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate a method of selectively enhancing the single mode signal of a Lamb wave by using a meander-coil electromagnetic acoustic transducer(EMAT) with a new magnetic configuration. We use the Lamb antisymmetric(A0) mode and symmetric(S0) mode as an example for analysis. The analytical expression of the magnitude of the spatial Fourier transform of the Lorentz force generated by different meander coils is used to determine the optimal driving frequency for single mode generation. The numerical calculation is used to characterize the new magnetic configuration and the conventional EMAT magnet. Experimental examinations of each meander coil in combination with the conventional and new magnetic configuration show that the Lamb wave signal can be selectively enhanced by choosing the appropriate driving frequency and coil parameters through using the improved meander-coil EMAT.  相似文献

This paper describes a new type of non-contact electromagnetic transducer (EMAT) that can be used to generate both Lamb and Rayleigh waves on metal samples. The generated waves are wideband and low frequency with a dominant frequency content centred at approximately 200 kHz extending to around 500 kHz. The transducers have been used on both aluminium and steel, but operate more efficiently on aluminium due to its lower electrical resistance and density when compared to steel.  相似文献

We present work on the development of an ultrasonic texture measurement system for sheet metals using non-contact transducers, suitable for use both in the laboratory and on the production line. Variation of the velocity of the zero-order symmetric (S0) Lamb wave is used to determine the crystallographic texture of polycrystalline metal sheets ranging in thickness from 0.1 to 3 mm. This system features improvements on previous state-of-the-art ultrasonic technology in that it probes velocity over a continuous range of angles using only two electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs). This is demonstrated to offer a significant improvement in accuracy and allows the detection and investigation of asymmetric anisotropies in the sheets. Another advantage of the system is its potential for combining several different measurements using a single pair of transducers. The capability is demonstrated for through-thickness shear wave measurements as well as the zero-order symmetric Lamb wave measurements which are the primary means of determining the texture. The change between generating Lamb and through-thickness bulk waves can be made entirely by changing the electrical circuit connected to the EMATs without modifying the transducer assembly in any way. Measurement of all of the above waves can provide information on the sheet thickness and other physical properties of the sheet in addition to texture. Certain texture parameters can be calculated from both Lamb and shear wave velocities, allowing self-calibration of the system.  相似文献

In this paper, we describe a modal expansion approach for the analysis of the selective generation of ultrasonic Lamb waves by electromagnetic acoustic transducers(EMATs). With the modal expansion approach for waveguide excitation, an analytical expression of the Lamb wave's mode expansion coefficient is deduced, which is related to the driving frequency and the geometrical parameters of the EMAT's meander coil, and lays a theoretical foundation for exactly analyzing the selective generation of Lamb waves with EMATs. The influences of the driving frequency on the mode expansion coefficient of ultrasonic Lamb waves are analyzed when the EMAT's geometrical parameters are given. The numerical simulations and experimental examinations show that the ultrasonic Lamb wave modes can be effectively regulated(strengthened or restrained) by choosing an appropriate driving frequency of EMAT, with the geometrical parameters given. This result provides a theoretical and experimental basis for selectively generating a single and pure Lamb wave mode with EMATs.  相似文献

A method is proposed to measure the stress on a tightened bolt using an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT). A shear wave is generated by the EMAT, and a longitudinal wave is obtained from the reflection of the shear wave due to the mode conversion. The ray paths of the longitudinal and the shear wave are analyzed, and the relationship between the bolt axial stress and the ratio of time of flight between two mode waves is then formulated. Based on the above outcomes, an EMAT is developed to measure the bolt axial stress without loosening the bolt, which is required in the conventional EMAT test method. The experimental results from the measurement of the bolt tension show that the shear and the mode-converted longitudinal waves can be received successfully, and the ratio of the times of flight of the shear and the mode-converted longitudinal waves is linearly proportional to the bolt axial tension. The non-contact characteristic of EMAT eliminates the effect of the couplant and also makes the measurement more convenient than the measurement performed using the piezoelectric transducer. This method provides a promising way to measure the stress on tightened bolts.  相似文献

金属弯板广泛应用于车辆、船舶、飞机等大型装备结构件中,折弯处易形成应力集中产生裂纹,直接影响构件的使用安全和寿命。本文开展了不锈钢弯板裂纹缺陷Lamb波检测技术研究,计算了钢板的频散曲线,优选三种不同频率的S0模态:0.25MHz、0.5MHz、1MHz。利用COMSOL软件建立频域仿真模型,模拟了Lamb波在3mm厚“L”形弯板内部的传播情况,开展折弯板裂纹缺陷检测实验,并使用小波包变换的方法对实验信号进行分析。结果表明,经小波变换后,0.25MHz、0.5MHz、1 MHz的S0模态Lamb波均可用于裂纹缺陷的识别检测.  相似文献

A modal expansion approach has been proposed for investigating generation of ultrasonic Lamb waves by electromagnetic acoustic transducers(EMATs).Based on the current distribution of the EMAT's meandering coil,the formal solution for the Lorentz surface stress applied on the plate surface has been derived.Then the function of the wave-number spectral density of the Lorentz surface stress for generating ultrasonic Lamb waves has been obtained using the spatial Fourier transform.On this basis,with the modal expansion approach for waveguide excitation,the mathematical expression of the Lamb wave's mode expansion coefficient has been deduced,which is closely related with the geometrical parameters of the EMAT's meandering coil.The mathematical relationship between the Lamb wave's mode expansion coefficient and the EMAT's geometrical parameters,obtained in this paper,lays a theoretical foundation for exactly analyzing generation of Lamb waves by EMATs.Further,the numerical analyses performed indicate that the Lamb wave's mode expansion coefficient can be appropriately adjusted by changing the geometrical parameters of the EMAT's coil,and thus the unwanted Lamb wave modes can be effectively restrained.This result provides a theoretical basis for generating a single and pure Lamb wave mode by the meandering coil EMAT.  相似文献

考虑了压电传感器(PZT)与板之间的耦合作用,从理论上研究了单个压电传感器激发时产生单模式兰姆波的频率调节方法,实验给出了模式选择在兰姆波结构健康监测中的应用. 在板材、板厚以及PZT尺寸一定的情况下,从理论上能够预测到作为频率函数的各兰姆波模式的幅值变化. 根据某特定兰姆波模式的幅值最大而其他模式幅值相对最小时所对应的频率,即可识别出该兰姆波模式优化的激发频率. 数值仿真验证了理论的有效性以及单模式兰姆波选择的可能性. 在不同的激发频率下,分别激发了优化的A0 模式,优化的S0模式以及共存的A0和S0模 关键词: 兰姆波 压电传感器 激发频率 结构健康监测  相似文献

In Lamb waves inspection, an air-coupled transmitter transducer is oriented at a specific angle such that it generates a pure Lamb mode which propagates along the structure and interacts with any existing defects. For this inspection system, amplitude losses appears when small inclinations of the tested structure occurs. An important factor which affects directly these losses has been observed, it consists of the Lamb waves beam (LWB) deviation due to this bad alignment. In this work, a simple expression of LWB deviation has been deduced. This expression includes the test structure angle, phase velocity of generated Lamb mode, and the phase velocity of waves propagating in the coupled medium. A(0) Lamb mode is generated and detected in 1 mm thick aluminium plate sample using 1 MHz PZ27 piezoelectric transducers of 20 mm of diameter. Experimental LWB deviation angles are measured for different inclination angles of the test sample. A comparative study is released with theoretical results. For 1 degree of misalignment in the aluminium plate inclination, and transducers separation distance of 35 mm, LWB deviation angle is around 7 degrees and the amplitude is reduced by around 11%. Then, for a large separation distance, we must move the receiver transducer to detect the deviated LWB. It is shown that, for both theoretical and experimental studies, the LWB deviation and its measured amplitude are very sensitive to the alignment of the tested structure with respect to the transmitter-receiver transducers plane. In metal plates it is most satisfactory to use A(0) mode compared with S(0) mode since it is easy to excite and has a large amplitude and small deviation beam angles.  相似文献

An oscillator using high order Lamb wave modes is presented. Due to the multimode property of Lamb waves, high frequency oscillators using high order mode Lamb waves can be fabricated. To select the operating mode of the Lamb wave oscillator, a high order mode selector is inserted into the feedback loop. An oscillator using the 13th antisymmetric mode (a13) in Lamb wave is achieved in experiments and the oscillating frequency is 5.30 times higher than that of the a0 mode excited by the interdigital transducer.  相似文献

Excitation and propagation of Lamb waves by using rectangular and circular piezoelectric transducers surface-bonded to an isotropic plate are investigated in this work. Analytical stain wave solutions are derived for the two transducer shapes, giving the responses of these transducers in Lamb wave fields. The analytical study is supported by a numerical simulation using the finite element method. Symmetric and antisymmetric components in the wave propagation responses are inspected in detail with respect to test parameters such as the transducer geometry, the length and the excitation frequency. By placing only one piezoelectric transducer on the top or the bottom surface of the plate and weakening the strength of one mode while enhancing the strength of the other modes to find the centre frequency, with which the peak wave amplitude ratio between the S0 and A0 modes is maximum, a single mode excitation from the multiple modes of the Lamb waves can be achieved approximately. Experimental data are presented to show the validity of the analyses. The results are used to optimize the Lamb wave detection system.  相似文献

In this work, a non-steady-state photo-emf receiver has been used to detect the lower frequency fundamental a0 Lamb waves in mild steel. Experimentally, the Lamb waves are laser-generated in the thermoelastic regime using a Q-switched, 20 ns, pulsed Nd:YAG laser and a line source. Typical Lamb waves had centre frequencies of 250 kHz but with frequency components that extended beyond 1 MHz. In mild steel, higher order Lamb wave modes were not considered to be significant below a frequency thickness product of 1.6 MHz mm. Below this level, associated velocity dispersion curve offered phase velocity changes that were sensitive to thickness change. Samples up to 5 mm in thickness were examined without significant interference from higher order modes. A non-steady-state photo-emf detector used as the ultrasonic detector had the advantage of a lower frequency cut-off at 100 kHz compared to a confocal Fabry-Pérot interferometer (CFPI) of about 2 MHz. Both schemes offered greater stand-off distance (>20 cm) than is possible with EMATs, which have a stand-off distance less than 1.0 mm. Progress made in detecting wall thinning in steel plate with thickness up to 5 mm is reported.  相似文献

由于兰姆波的多模和频散特性,实际检测时在同一激发频率下存在多种模式的混合信号,而各模式信号有不同的频散特性,使得在时频混叠的情况下兰姆波的检测变得十分复杂.本文在频散补偿的基础上,通过时延函数建模,依靠不同模式频散趋势的差异性,将时频混叠信号的分离问题转化为部分模式混叠信号的分离问题.基于分数阶微分的理论,用信号幅值谱分数阶微分极大值和对应频率分别与微分阶次拟合多项式实现特征参数的提取并依靠特征参数重建幅值谱.结合相位谱重构时域信号以实现部分混叠信号中频散补偿后的模式的分离.最后恢复频散获得分离后的兰姆波信号.仿真和实验结果表明,本文方法不仅可以实现时频混叠多模式兰姆波信号的分离,更能保证分离精度,有助于复杂多模式频散信号的分离与处理的进一步研究.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of cortical thickness variation on the propagation of leaky Lamb waves is investigated by using an axial transmission technique commonly used to characterize long bones. Three Lucite plates with thicknesses of 1, 3, and 5 mm as bone phantoms and one bovine tibia with a cortical thickness of 2 mm were used at various low frequencies. Experimental measurements in bone phantoms show that the peak frequency and amplitude of excited Lamb modes strongly depend on the thickness of the Lucite plate. In the bovine tibia, the S0 and A0 Lamb modes are consistently observed in the frequency-thickness region from 0.2 to 1.0 MHz mm, and can be effectively launched at a frequency of 200 kHz, suggesting 200 kHz to be the optimal signal frequency for in vivo clinical applications. It can be also seen that both modes are affected by the frequency-thickness product, but the effect is greater for the A0 mode. Hence, the A0 Lamb mode seems more sensitive to cortical thickness change due to aging and osteoporosis. This study suggests that the use of leaky Lamb waves is feasible for ultrasonic bone assessment.  相似文献

A time-frequency representation (TFR) is used to analyze the interaction of a multimode and dispersive Lamb wave with a notch, and then serves as the basis for a correlation technique to locate the notch. The experimental procedure uses a laser source and a dual-probe laser interferometer to generate and detect Lamb waves in a notched plate. The high fidelity, broad-bandwidth, point-like and noncontact nature of laser ultrasonics are critical to the success of this study, making it possible to experimentally measure transient Lamb waves without any frequency biases. A specific TFR, the reassigned spectrogram, is used to resolve the dispersion curves of the individual modes of the plate, and then the slowness-frequency representation (SFR) of the plate is calculated from this reassigned spectrogram. By considering the notch to be an additional (second) source, the reflected and transmitted contributions of each Lamb mode are automatically identified using the SFRs. These results are then used to develop a quantitative understanding of the interaction of an incident Lamb wave with a notch, helping to identify mode conversion. Finally, two complementary, automated localization techniques are developed based on this understanding of scattering of Lamb waves.  相似文献

The sources of systematic errors in measuring the amplitude and propagation velocity of normal waves are analyzed. Criteria are proposed for estimating the distances beyond which a wave can be considered a normal wave. The measurement method and corresponding experimental setup are described. Experimental estimates are obtained for the distances necessary for the formation of symmetric zero modes of horizontally polarized normal waves and Lamb waves in thin strips at frequencies of 1.8 and 2.5 MHz.  相似文献

Enhancement of signal amplitudes from Rayleigh wave interaction at solid surface features has been investigated when signals were detected by an in-plane electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT). A laser-ultrasound system was used to inspect surface-breaking slots, serving as artificial defects. Nd:YAG laser pulses were delivered onto a metal surface via an optical fiber and focused to a line source by a cylindrical lens. An in-plane EMAT receiver detected transient surface acoustic waves. A-scan signals and B-scan images from surface defects revealed increased signal amplitude up to 2.8+/-0.3 depending on the distance of the transducer from a slot. An explanation is based on the interaction of the EMAT sensor with the Rayleigh wave. A supporting computer model was derived to show that experimental signal enhancements were consistent with numerical predictions.  相似文献

在固井质量评价中主要利用套管中模式波的幅度或衰减变化反映水泥的胶结状况,不同测井仪器在套管中激发的模式波的类型不同,研究套管中各模式波的传播特征和影响因素可充分挖掘测量数据的潜在应用价值。CBL和SBT等测井仪器在套管中主要激发拉伸波,类同于平板中的零阶对称Lamb波,水泥环封隔测井仪器的斜入射模式在套管中主要激发套管弯曲波,类同于平板中的零阶反对称Lamb波,垂直入射模式激发套管共振波,类同于平板中的高阶对称Lamb波。该文重点分析了这些模式波的衰减特征及其对微环的响应,套管弯曲波在套后耦合轻质水泥时对微环不敏感,但在套后耦合常规水泥或重水泥时,其衰减明显高于胶结良好的状况;拉伸波对微环的存在最为敏感;套管共振波对微环不敏感。  相似文献

Two spot-welded thin sheets can be treated as two elastic waveguides coupled by a small common welded region. It is proposed to use Lamb waves to evaluate the quality of the weld. The feasibility of selecting the working frequency and mode number of the Lamb wave so that no resonance of the elastic vibrations appears in the weld region is considered analytically. This condition ensures a one-to-one correspondence between the mean diameter of the spot-weld region and the coefficient of transmission of the Lamb waves through it.A simple technique is suggested for determining the transmission coefficient and the scattering patterns of Lamb waves at the weld region. Experiments indicate that, to a satisfactory approximation, the wave transmission coefficient is proportional to the cube of the weld diameter. This allows a unique determination of the dimension of the welded region on the basis of the amplitude of the transmitted signal.  相似文献
