The electronic structure of iron phthalocyanine (FePc) in the valence region was examined within a joint theoretical-experimental collaboration. Particular emphasis was placed on the determination of the energy position of the Fe 3d levels in proximity of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO). Photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) measurements were performed on FePc in gas phase at several photon energies in the interval between 21 and 150 eV. Significant variations of the relative intensities were observed, indicating a different elemental and atomic orbital composition of the highest lying spectral features. The electronic structure of a single FePc molecule was first computed by quantum chemical calculations by means of density functional theory (DFT). The hybrid Becke 3-parameter, Lee, Yang and Parr (B3LYP) functional and the semilocal 1996 functional of Perdew, Burke and Ernzerhof (PBE) of the generalized gradient approximation (GGA-)type, exchange-correlation functionals were used. The DFT/B3LYP calculations find that the HOMO is a doubly occupied π-type orbital formed by the carbon 2p electrons, and the HOMO-1 is a mixing of carbon 2p and iron 3d electrons. In contrast, the DFT/PBE calculations find an iron 3d contribution in the HOMO. The experimental photoelectron spectra of the valence band taken at different energies were simulated by means of the Gelius model, taking into account the atomic subshell photoionization cross sections. Moreover, calculations of the electronic structure of FePc using the GGA+U method were performed, where the strong correlations of the Fe 3d electronic states were incorporated through the Hubbard model. Through a comparison with our quantum chemical calculations we find that the best agreement with the experimental results is obtained for a U(eff) value of 5 eV.  相似文献

The electronic structures of three dinuclear iron complexes were determined with the DFT method. The complexes contain a {Fe(NO)2}9 unit and thiolate, nitrosyl, carbonyl and amine ligands at the second iron atom. The two iron atoms are bridged by thiolate ligands. In the lowest energy states of these complexes, the iron atoms possess spin S = 1, 3/2 or 5/2, depending on the coordinated ligands and their mutual arrangement. Nitrosyl is coordinated as NO antiferromagnetically coupled to iron, and the two iron units are antiferromagnetically coupled to each other.  相似文献

An examination of the ground and excited states of magnesium porphine and pheoporphine and their positive and negative ions using the intermediate neglect of differential overlap/spectroscopic method is reported. It is found that rather large changes in the Mg out-of-plane coordinate can be attained at very little cost in energy. These geometric changes alone can be used to explain the large range of spectroscopic shifts observed in the visible band of chlorophyll that are site dependent. These calculations also show a porphyrin to Mg charge transfer excitation at about 20,000 cm?1, which, if populated and allowed to relax, becomes the lowest excited singlet. This suggests that the initial photochemical event in photosynthesis may be excitation to the visible Q band followed by internal conversion to the charge transfer state accompanied by movement of the Mg atom out of the plane of the ring. This movement could result in intermolecular charge transfer, and relaxation of the Mg atom back to the plane of the ring. The nature of the positive and negative ions of these model chlorophylls is discussed in light of their role as the electron donor and their potential role as initial electron acceptor in photosynthesis.  相似文献

The electronic structure of the single molecule magnet system {M[Fe(L(1))(2)](3)}4CHCl(3) [M=Fe,Cr;L(1)=CH(3)N(CH(2)CH(2)O)(2) (2-)] has been studied using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray-absorption spectroscopy, soft-x-ray emission spectroscopy, as well as theoretical density-functional-based methods. There is a good agreement between theoretical calculations and experimental data. The valence band mainly consists of three bands between 2 and 30 eV. Both theory and experiments show that the top of the valence band is dominated by the hybridization between Fe 3d and O 2p bands. From the shape of the Fe 2p spectra it is argued that Fe in the molecule is most likely in the 2+ charge state. Its neighboring atoms (O,N) exhibit a magnetic polarization yielding effective spin S=52 per iron atom, giving a high-spin state molecule with a total S=5 effective spin for the case of M=Fe.  相似文献

An experimental and theoretical study of the electronic structure of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) molecule is presented. We performed x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and photoabsorption [x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES)] gas phase experiments and we compared the results with self-consistent field, density functional theory (DFT), and static-exchange theoretical calculations. In addition, ultraviolet photoelectron spectra (UPS) allowed disentangling several outer molecular orbitals. A detailed study of the two highest occupied orbitals (having a(1u) and b(1g) symmetries) is presented: the high energy resolution available for UPS measurements allowed resolving an extra feature assigned to vibrational stretching in the pyrrole rings. This observation, together with the computed DFT electron density distributions of the outer valence orbitals, suggests that the a(1u) orbital (the highest occupied molecular orbital) is mainly localized on the carbon atoms of pyrrole rings and it is doubly occupied, while the b(1g) orbital, singly occupied, is mainly localized on the Cu atom. Ab initio calculations of XPS and XANES spectra at carbon K edge of CuPc are also presented. The comparison between experiment and theory revealed that, in spite of being formally not equivalent, carbon atoms of the benzene rings experience a similar electronic environment. Carbon K-edge absorption spectra were interpreted in terms of different contributions coming from chemically shifted C 1s orbitals of the nonequivalent carbon atoms on the inner ring of the molecule formed by the sequence of CN bonds and on the benzene rings, respectively, and also in terms of different electronic distributions of the excited lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and LUMO+1. In particular, the degenerate LUMO appears to be mostly localized on the inner pyrrole ring.  相似文献

New metal(II)-thiolate complexes supported by the tetradentate ligand 1,5-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,5-diazacyclooctane (L(8)py(2)) have been synthesized and subjected to physical, spectroscopic, structural, and computational characterization. The X-ray crystal structures of these complexes, [L(8)py(2)M(S-C(6)H(4)-p-CH(3))]BPh(4) (M = Co, Ni, Zn), reveal distorted square-pyramidal divalent metal ions with four equatorial nitrogen donors from L(8)py(2) and axial p-toluenethiolate ligands. The reactions of the complexes with benzyl bromide produce isolable metal(II)-bromide complexes (in the cases of Co and Ni) and the thioether benzyl-p-tolylsulfide. This reaction is characterized by a second-order rate law (nu = k(2)[L(8)py(2)M(SAr)(+)][PhCH(2)Br]) for all complexes (where M = Fe, Co, Ni, or Zn). Of particular significance is the disparity between k(2) for M = Fe and Co versus k(2) for M = Ni and Zn, in that k(2) for M = Ni and Zn is ca. 10 times larger (faster) than k(2) for M = Fe and Co. An Eyring analysis of k(2) for [L(8)py(2)Co(SAr)](+) and [L(8)py(2)Ni(SAr)](+) reveals that the reaction rate differences are not rooted in a change in mechanism, as the reactions of these complexes with benzyl bromide exhibit comparable activation parameters (M = Co: DeltaH() = 45(2) kJ mol(-)(1), DeltaS() = -144(6) J mol(-)(1) K(-)(1); M = Ni: DeltaH() = 43(3) kJ mol(-)(1), DeltaS() = -134(8) J mol(-)(1) K(-)(1)). Electronic structure calculations using density functional theory (DFT) reveal that the enhanced reaction rate for [L(8)py(2)Ni(SAr)](+) is rooted in a four-electron repulsion (or a "filled/filled interaction") between a completely filled nickel(II) d(pi) orbital and one of the two thiolate frontier orbitals, a condition that is absent in the Fe(II) and Co(II) complexes. The comparable reactivity of [L(8)py(2)Zn(SAr)](+) relative to that of [L(8)py(2)Ni(SAr)](+) arises from a highly ionic zinc(II)-thiolate bond that enhances the negative charge density on the thiolate sulfur. DFT calculations on putative thioether-coordinated intermediates reveal that the Co(II)- and Zn(II)-thioethers exhibit weaker M-S bonding than Ni(II). These combined results suggest that while Ni(II) may serve as a competent replacement for Zn(II) in alkyl group transfer enzymes, turnover may be limited by slow product release from the Ni(II) center.  相似文献

The donor-acceptor copolymer containing benzothiadiazole (electron acceptor), linked to functionalized fluorene (electron donor), [poly[9,9-bis(3'-(tert-butyl propanoate))fluorene-co-4,7-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (LaPPS40), was synthesized through the Suzuki route. The polymer was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, gel permeation chromatography, NMR, thermal analysis, cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis spectrometry, and photophysical measurements. Theoretical calculations (density functional theory and semiempirical methodologies) used to simulate the geometry of some oligomers and the dipole moments of molecular orbitals involved were in excellent agreement with experimental results. Using such data, the higher energy absorption band was attributed to the π-π* (S(0) → S(4)) transition of the fluorene units and the lower lying band was attributed to the intramolecular (ICT) (S(0) → S(1)) charge transfer between acceptor (benzothiadiazole) and donor groups (fluorene) (D-A structure). The ICT character of this band was confirmed by its solvatochromic properties using solvents with different dielectric properties, and this behavior could be well described by the Lippert-Mataga equation. To explain the solvatochromic behavior, both the magnitude and orientation of the dipole moments in the electronic ground state and in the excited state were analyzed using the theoretical data. According to these data, the change in magnitude of the dipole moments was very small for both transitions but the spatial orientation changed remarkably for the lower energy band ascribed to the ICT band.  相似文献

The electronic properties and thermal decomposition of 5-methyltetrazole (5MTZ) are investigated using UV photoelectron spectroscopy (UVPES) and theoretical calculations. Simulated spectra of both 1H- and 2H-5MTZ, based on electron propagator methods, are produced in order to study the relative tautomer population. The thermal decomposition results are rationalized in terms of G2(MP2) results. 5MTZ yields a HOMO ionization energy of 10.82 ± 0.04 eV and the gas-phase 5MTZ assumes predominantly the 2H-form. Its gas-phase thermal decomposition starts at ca. 195 °C and leads to the formation of N2,CH3CN and HCN. N2 is formed from two competing routes, involving 150.2 and 126.2 kJ/mol energy barriers, from 2H- and 1H-5MTZ, respectively. CH3CN is formed also from two competing pathways, requiring activation energies of 218.3 (2H-5MTZ) and 198.6 kJ/mol (1H-5MTZ). Conclusions are also drawn in order to explain the formation of HCN from secondary reactions in the thermal decomposition process.  相似文献

The experimental UV/vis absorption spectrum of ortho-nitrobenzaldehyde (o-NBA) has been assigned by means of MS-CASPT2/CASSCF, TD-DFT, and RI-CC2 theoretical computations. Additional information on the nature of the absorbing bands was obtained by comparing the o-NBA spectrum with that of related compounds, as, e.g., nitrobenzene and benzaldehyde. For wavelengths larger than approximately 280 nm, the absorption spectrum of o-NBA is dominated by a series of weak n pi* absorptions from the NO2 and CHO groups. These weak transitions are followed in energy by a more intense band, peaking at 250 nm and arising from charge transfer pi pi* excitations involving mainly benzene and nitro orbitals. Finally, the most intense band centered at 220 nm has its origin in the overlap of two different absorptions: the first one localized in the NO2 substituent and the second one arising from a charge transfer excitation involving the NO2 and the CHO fragments, respectively.  相似文献

The HeI photoelectron spectra of H2CS3 and H2CS4 in the gas phase have been obtained for the first time. A complete theoretical study involving the calculation of the ionization energies using orbital valence Green's functional (OVGF) and population analysis was performed. Calculations of cation-radical forms were carried out in order to interpret the main characters of the six highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs). The first vertical ionization potentials are 8.74 and 8.56eV for H2CS3 and H2CS4, and attributed to {9b2(nS(C=S))}-1 and {8a"(3ppi*(S-S), nS)}-1, respectively. Meanwhile, the energy sequence of three types of sulfur 3p lone-pair have been discussed: 3ppi(S-S)*相似文献

Both manganese and rhenium complexes of the type [M(bipy)(CO)(3)(N-RIm)](+) (bipy=2,2'-bipyridine) undergo deprotonation of the central CH group of the N-alkylimidazole (N-RIm) ligand when treated with a strong base. However, the outcome of the reaction is very different for either metal. For Mn, the addition of the equimolar amount of an acid to the product of the deprotonation affords an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complex, whereas for Re, once the deprotonation of the central imidazole CH group has occurred, the bipy ligand undergoes a nucleophilic attack on an ortho carbon, affording the C-C coupling product. The extension of these studies to pseudo-octahedral [Mo(η(3)-allyl)(bipy)(CO)(2)(N-RIm)](+) complexes has allowed us to isolate cationic NHC complexes (Mn(I)-type behavior), as well as their neutral imidazol-2-yl precursors. Theoretical studies of the reaction mechanisms using DFT computations were carried out on the deprotonation of [Mn(bipy)(CO)(3)(N-PhIm)](+), [Re(bipy)(CO)(3) (N-MesIm)](+), and [Mo(η(3)-C(4)H(7))(bipy)(CO)(2) (N-MesIm)](+) complexes (Mes=mesityl) at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) (LANL2DZ for Mn, Re, and Mo) level of theory. Our results explain why different products have been found experimentally for Mn, Mo, and Re complexes. For Re, the process leading to a C-C coupling product is clearly more favored than those forming an imidazol-2-yl product. In contrast, for Mn and Mo complexes, the lower stabilizing interaction between the central imidazole and ortho bipy C atoms, along with the higher lability of the ligands, make the formation of an NHC-type product kinetically more accessible, in good agreement with experimental findings.  相似文献

Ribbon phases consist of long cylindrical aggregates that have non-circular normal sections. We have recently pointed out that scattering data for a large number of different intermediate ribbon phases of lower than hexagonal symmetry found in ionic surfactant systems indicate that these phases have a structure possessing a centred rectangular symmetry. In this communication, we have investigated the aggregate dimensions for the phases with cylindrical aggregates, i.e., the hexagonal phases and the centred rectangular ribbon phases. Previously published phase diagrams, small angle X-ray and neutron scattering data and 2HNMR data for these phases in different systems have been used for this purpose. The results are that the axial ratios of the aggregates increase when the temperature decreases, when the surfactant concentration increases, and when the average surfactant charge decreases. Models that semi-quantitatively describe the thermodynamics of the micellar, hexagonal and lamellar phases, which are based on the Poisson-Boltzmann cell model approach, have previously been presented in the literature. We have extended these models to treat also the ribbon phases. The results from the calculations show the same trends with respect to changes in the dimensions of the non-circular aggregates upon changes in temperature, surfactant concentration and average surfactant charge, as those obtained experimentally. Theoretically calculated phase diagrams with ribbon phases are also presented. Based on the predictions of the model and some previously published experimental data for hexagonal phases, it is proposed that the formation of non-circular, cylindrical aggregates is a general property of single-chain, ionic surfactant/water systems, and that these aggregates in general pack on hexagonal lattices. The normal sections of these aggregates are circular on average, on account of the fact that the degree of deformation and the orientation of deformation changes along the axis of the aggregates and with time. Only for some systems, temperatures and surfactant concentrations do the asymmetric aggregates line up and ribbon phases with centred rectangular symmetry are obtained. The driving mechanisms for the transition from the hexagonal phase with asymmetric (fluctuating) cylinders and further to the centred rectangular phase with asymmetric (stiff) cylinders is also discussed. It is argued that this phase transition is of the first order.  相似文献

Infrared multiple-photon dissociation spectroscopy has been used to record vibrational spectra of charged copper-resveratrol complexes in the 3500-3700 cm(-1) and 1100-1900 cm(-1) regions. Minimum energy structures have been determined by density functional theory calculations using plane waves and pseudopotentials. In particular, the copper(I)-resveratrol complex presents a tetra-coordinated metal bound with two carbon atoms of the alkenyl moiety and two closest carbons of the adjoining resorcinol ring. For these geometries vibrational spectra have been calculated by using linear response theory. The good agreement between experimental and calculated IR spectra for the selected species confirms the overall reliability of the proposed geometries.  相似文献

Discotic liquid crystals emerge as very attractive materials for organic-based (opto)electronics as they allow efficient charge and energy transport along self-organized molecular columns. Here, angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARUPS) is used to investigate the electronic structure and supramolecular organization of the discotic molecule, hexakis(hexylthio)diquinoxalino[2,3-a:2',3'-c]phenazine, deposited on graphite. The ARUPS data reveal significant changes in the electronic properties when going from disordered to columnar phases, the main feature being a decrease in ionization potential by 1.8 eV following the appearance of new electronic states at low binding energy. This evolution is rationalized by quantum-chemical calculations performed on model stacks containing from two to six molecules, which illustrate the formation of a quasi-band structure with Bloch-like orbitals delocalized over several molecules in the column. The ARUPS data also point to an energy dispersion of the upper pi-bands in the columns by some 1.1 eV, therefore highlighting the strongly delocalized nature of the pi-electrons along the discotic stacks.  相似文献

Reactions of laser-ablated iron oxides with CO in excess argon are investigated by infrared adsorption spectroscopy and density functional theoretical calculations. The carbonyl iron oxides OFe(CO)(n) (n = 1-3) and O(2)Fe(CO)(m) (m = 1, 2) are generated during sample deposition or annealing, whereas CO(2) is greatly produced at the expense of these carbonyl iron oxides upon UV irradiation, showing the formation of intermediate carbonyl iron oxides in the oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. These intermediate carbonyl iron oxides are characterized on the basis of isotopic substitution, stepwise annealing, change of CO concentration and laser energy, and comparison with theoretical calculations. The overall agreement between the experimental and calculated vibrational frequencies, relative absorption intensities, and isotopic shifts supports the identification of these complexes from the matrix infrared spectra. The reaction pathways for the formation of the products are proposed based on the experimental and theoretical results presented.  相似文献

Electronic states and solvation of Cu and Ag aqua ions are investigated by comparing the Cu(2+) + e(-)--> Cu(+) and Ag(2+) + e(-)--> Ag(+) redox reactions using density functional-based computational methods. The coordination number of aqueous Cu(2+) is found to fluctuate between 5 and 6 and reduces to 2 for Cu(+), which forms a tightly bound linear dihydrate. Reduction of Ag(2+) changes the coordination number from 5 to 4. The energetics of the oxidation reactions is analyzed by comparing vertical ionization potentials, relaxation energies, and vertical electron affinities. The model is validated by a computation of the free energy of the full redox reaction Ag(2+) + Cu(+) --> Ag(+) + Cu(2+). Investigation of the one-electron states shows that the redox active frontier orbitals are confined to the energy gap between occupied and empty states of the pure solvent and localized on the metal ion hydration complex. The effect of solvent fluctuations on the electronic states is highlighted in a computation of the UV absorption spectrum of Cu(+) and Ag(+).  相似文献
