The development of an effective adsorbent for cleansing polluted water is required for environmental purification. In this respect, a supramolecular hydrogel constructed by the self‐assembly of small molecules could be a strong candidate. Adsorption experiments of organic dyes were performed using supramolecular hydrogels of amphiphilic tris‐urea 1 . Cationic organic dyes were adsorbed efficiently; indeed, the adsorption of methylene blue was as high as 4.19 mol equivalents relative to 1 . Two luminescence peaks were observed in the rhodamine 6G‐adsorbed supramolecular hydrogels, and their ratios varied with the amount of dye adsorbed. Fluorescence microscopy images of the supramolecular hydrogel at lower dye levels exhibited fibrous fluorescence consistent with the fibrous aggregates of 1 . According to these results, adsorption may proceed gradually, that is, occurring initially on the fibers and later in the aqueous spaces of the supramolecular hydrogel.  相似文献

It is still a challenge to achieve both excellent mechanical strength and biocompatibility in hydrogels. In this study, we exploited two interactions to form a novel biocompatible, slicing‐resistant, and self‐healing hydrogel. The first was molecular host–guest recognition between a host (isocyanatoethyl acrylate modified β‐cyclodextrin) and a guest (2‐(2‐(2‐(2‐(adamantyl‐1‐oxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)ethanol acrylate) to form “three‐arm” host–guest supramolecules (HGSMs), and the second was covalent bonding between HGSMs (achieved by UV‐initiated polymerization) to form strong cross‐links in the hydrogel. The host–guest interaction enabled the hydrogel to rapidly self‐heal. When it was cut, fresh surfaces were formed with dangling host and guest molecules (due to the breaking of host–guest recognition), which rapidly recognized each other again to heal the hydrogel by recombination of the cut surfaces. The smart hydrogels hold promise for use as biomaterials for soft‐tissue repair.  相似文献

This article describes recent developments in C3‐symmetric tris‐urea low‐molecular‐weight gelators and their applications. The C3‐symmetric tris‐ureas are excellent frameworks to form supramolecular polymers through noncovalent interactions. In organic solvents, hydrophobic tris‐ureas form supramolecular gels. Amphiphilic tris‐ureas form supramolecular gels in aqueous media. Functional supramolecular gels were prepared by introducing appropriate functional groups into the outer sphere of tris‐ureas. Supramolecular hydrogels obtained from amphiphilic tris‐ureas were used in the electrophoresis of proteins. These electrophoreses results showed several unique characteristics compared to typical electrophoreses results obtained using polyacrylamide matrices.

A methodology for preparing supramolecular hydrogels from guest‐modified cyclodextrins (CDs) based on the host–guest and hydrogen‐bonding interactions of CDs is presented. Four types of modified CDs were synthesized to understand better the gelation mechanism. The 2D ROESY NMR spectrum of β‐CD‐AmTNB (Am=amino, TNB=trinitrobenzene) reveals that the TNB group was included in the β‐CD cavity. Pulsed field gradient NMR (PFG NMR) spectroscopy and AFM show that β‐CD‐AmTNB formed a supramolecular polymer in aqueous solution through head‐to‐tail stacking. Although β‐CD‐AmTNB did not produce a hydrogel due to insufficient growth of supramolecular polymers, β‐CD‐CiAmTNB (Ci=cinnamoyl) formed supramolecular fibrils through host–guest interactions. Hydrogen bonds between the cross‐linked fibrils resulted in the hydrogel, which displayed excellent chemical‐responsive properties. Gel‐to‐sol transitions occurred by adding 1‐adamantane carboxylic acid (AdCA) or urea. 1H NMR and induced circular dichroism (ICD) spectra reveal that AdCA released the guest parts from the CD cavity and that urea acts as a denaturing agent to break the hydrogen bonds between CDs. The hydrogel was also destroyed by adding β‐CD, which acts as the competitive host to reduce the fibrils. Furthermore, the gel changed to a sol by adding methyl orange (MO) as a guest compound, but the gel reappeared upon addition of α‐CD, which is a stronger host for MO.  相似文献

Self‐healing supramolecular hydrogels have emerged as a novel class of biomaterials that combine hydrogels with supramolecular chemistry to develop highly functional biomaterials with advantages including native tissue mimicry, biocompatibility, and injectability. These properties are endowed by the reversibly cross‐linked polymer network of the hydrogel. These hydrogels have great potential for realizing yet to be clinically translated tissue engineering therapies. This review presents methods of self‐healing supramolecular hydrogel formation and their uses in tissue engineering as well as future perspectives.  相似文献

Recently, supramolecular hydrogels have attracted increasing interest owing to their tunable stability and inherent biocompatibility. However, only few studies have been reported in the literature on self‐healing supramolecular nucleoside hydrogels, compared to self‐healing polymer hydrogels. In this work, we successfully developed a self‐healing supramolecular nucleoside hydrogel obtained by simply mixing equimolar amounts of guanosine (G) and isoguanosine (isoG) in the presence of K+. The gelation properties have been studied systematically by comparing different alkali metal ions as well as mixtures with different ratios of G and isoG. To this end, rheological and phase diagram experiments demonstrated that the co‐gel not only possessed good self‐healing properties and short recovery time (only 20 seconds) but also could be formed at very low concentrations of K+. Furthermore, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD), and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy suggested that possible G2isoG2‐quartet structures occurred in this self‐healing supramolecular nucleoside hydrogel. This co‐gel, to some extent, addressed the problem of isoguanosine gels for the applications in vivo, which showed the potential to be a new type of drug delivery system for biomedical applications in the future.  相似文献

Research investigations involving pristine carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and their applications in diversified fields have been gathering enormous impetus in recent times. One such emerging domain deals with the hybridization of CNTs within hydrogels to form soft nanocomposites with superior properties. However, till now, reports on the inclusion of pristine CNTs within low‐molecular‐weight hydrogels are very scarce due to their intrinsic feature of remaining in the bundled state and strong repulsive behavior to the aqueous milieu. Herein, the synthesis of a series of amino acid/dipeptide‐based amphiphilic hydrogelators having a quaternary ammonium/imidazolium moiety at the polar head and a C16 hydrocarbon chain as the hydrophobic segment is reported. The synthesized amphiphiles exhibited excellent hydrogelation (minimum gelation concentration (MGC) ≈0.7–5 % w/v) as well as single‐walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) dispersion ability in aqueous medium. Interestingly, the dispersed SWNTs were incorporated into the supramolecular hydrogel formed by amphiphiles with an imidazolium moiety at the polar end through complementary cation–π and π–π interactions. More importantly, the newly synthesized hydrogelators were able to accommodate a significantly high amount of pristine SWNTs (2–3.5 % w/v) at their MGCs without affecting the gelating properties. This is the first time that such a huge amount of SWNTs has been successfully incorporated within hydrogels. The efficient inclusion of SWNTs to develop soft nanocomposites was thoroughly investigated by spectroscopic and microscopic methods. Remarkably, the developed nanocomposites showed manifold enhancement (≈85‐fold) in their mechanical strength compared with native hydrogel without SWNTs. The viscoelastic properties of these nanocomposites were readily tuned by varying the amount of incorporated CNTs.  相似文献

Dual responsive cyclotriphosphazene (CTP)‐based hydrogels have been synthesized for a controlled release of FU, a hydrophilic drugs. These hydrogels composed of mono (methacryloyl‐2‐ethoxy)‐pentakis(N1,N1‐dimethylpropane‐1,3‐diamino)‐cyclotriphosphazene (HEMA (DMPDA)5CP), acryl amide and pectin were synthesized by free radical polymerization method using methylenebisacrylamide cross linker. The CTP hydrogels were characterized to understand the structure, drug nature in the network and morphology by FTIR, DSC, XRD and SEM, respectively. In this paper, the swelling (dynamic and equilibrium) properties of cyclotriphosphazene hydrogels were investigated, showing dual (pH and thermo) responsiveness and large variation in the swelling capacity. Based on these results the structural parameters of the hydrogel networks such as the average molecular weight between cross‐links (Mc) and polymer–solvent interaction parameter (χ) were determined. The CTP hydrogels has high FU loading efficiency 65 ± 0.5. In‐vitro FU release of these hydrogels was controlled for about 24 hr also hydrogel showed a distinct initial burst. The CTP hydrogels are bearing both hydrophilic groups of pectin and hydrophobic groups of CTP exhibited dual responsive behaviors with pH and temperature. A supramolecular cross‐linked cross‐linker, capable of introducing rotaxane cross‐links to vinyl polymers, has been developed for the rational synthesis of polyrotaxane networks. The experimental results reveal that the combination of an oligocyclodextrin (OCD) and a terminal bulky group‐tethering macromonomer (TBM) forms a polymer‐network structure having polymerizable moieties through supramolecular cross‐linking. Radical polymerization of a variety of typical vinyl monomers in the presence of the vinylic supramolecular cross‐linker (VSC) afforded the corresponding vinyl polymers cross‐linked through the rotaxane cross‐links (RCP) as transparent stable films in high yields under both photoinitiated and thermal polymerization conditions. A poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide)‐based hydrogel synthesized by using VSC, RCPDMAAm, displayed a unique mechanical property. The small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) results, indicating patterns characteristic of a polyrotaxane network, clearly suggested the presence and role of the rotaxane cross‐links. The confirmation of the introduction of rotaxane‐cross‐links into vinyl polymers strongly reveals the significant usefulness of VSC.  相似文献

Supramolecular polymers from the bolaamphiphilic L ‐histidine ( BolaHis ) and benzene dicarboxylic acids (o‐phthalic acid, OPA ; isophthalic acid, IPA and terephthalic acid, TPA ) were found to form hydrogels although neither of the single components could gel water. It was suggested that the hydrogen bond and ionic interactions among different imidazole and carboxylic acid groups are responsible for the formation of the supramolecular polymer as well as the hydrogel formation. Depending on the structures of the dicarboxylic acids, different behaviors of the gels were observed. The hydrogels from OPA / BolaHis and IPA / BolaHis showed thixotropic properties, that is, the hydrogel was destroyed by hand shaking and then slowly gelated again at room temperature. However, the hydrogels of TPA / BolaHis could not. Interestingly, when EuIII was doped into IPA / BolaHis supramolecular polymers, very strong luminescence enhancement was observed. FT‐IR spectroscopies and XRD analysis revealed that the strong luminescence enhancement could be attributed to the matched supramolecular nanostructures, which render the correct binding and a good dispersion of EuIII ions. The work offers a new approach for fabricating functional hydrogels through the supramolecular polymers.  相似文献

Hydrogels cross‐linked with metal ions (e.g., Ca2+) represent a promising class of bioinspired materials for a wide range of biomedical applications. Herein, we report a facile approach to obtain cross‐linked stimuli‐responsive supramolecular polypeptide hydrogels. The hydrogel is prepared by statistical/block copoly(L‐glutamate)s based copolymers cross‐linked with calcium ions. The incorporation of both oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) and glutamic acid residues in the polymer offers thermal‐responsive property and cooperative binding sites with Ca2+ ions simultaneously. We present a systematic study of the influence of calcium ions on the gelation behaviors of these copolymers. It is observed that the addition of calcium ions induces the formation of hydrogels. Increasing the concentration of Ca2+ ions can significantly enhance the gelation ability of the samples as indicated by increased storage modulus and decreased sol‐to‐gel transition temperature (Tsol‐gel). We further demonstrate that the influence of monomer distribution on the gelation behavior is trivial, which is possibly due to similar morphology of the self‐assemblies. The obtained hydrogels exhibit thermal‐responsive gelation behavior mediated by ion cross‐linking, which enables them to be ideal smart hydrogel system for many applications.  相似文献

We developed the photo‐crosslinkable hydrogel‐based 3D microfluidic device to culture neural stem cells (NSCs) and tumors. The photo‐crosslinkable gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) polymer was used as a physical barrier in the microfluidic device and collagen type I gel was employed to culture NSCs in a 3D manner. We demonstrated that the pore size was inversely proportional to concentrations of GelMA hydrogels, showing the pore sizes of 5 and 25 w/v% GelMA hydrogels were 34 and 4 μm, respectively. It also revealed that the morphology of pores in 5 w/v% GelMA hydrogels was elliptical shape, whereas we observed circular‐shaped pores in 25 w/v% GelMA hydrogels. To culture NSCs and tumors in the 3D microfluidic device, we investigated the molecular diffusion properties across GelMA hydrogels, indicating that 25 w/v% GelMA hydrogels inhibited the molecular diffusion for 6 days in the 3D microfluidic device. In contrast, the chemicals were diffused in 5 w/v% GelMA hydrogels. Finally, we cultured NSCs and tumors in the hydrogel‐based 3D microfluidic device, showing that 53–75% NSCs differentiated into neurons, while tumors were cultured in the collagen gels. Therefore, this photo‐crosslinkable hydrogel‐based 3D microfluidic culture device could be a potentially powerful tool for regenerative tissue engineering applications.  相似文献

Supramolecular self‐assembly of 24 forklike mesogenic ligands and 12 transition metal ions led to the formation of giant spherical coordination complexes that exhibit liquid‐crystalline (LC) phases. Self‐healing LC supramolecular gels were also obtained through the introduction of these LC nanostructured supramolecular giant spherical complexes into dynamic covalent networks formed by cross‐linkers and bifunctional polymers. The giant spherical structures of the PdII complexes with 72 rodlike moieties on the periphery were characterized by NMR, diffusion‐ordered NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. These complexes are stable and exhibit lyotropic LC behavior, while the mesogenic ligands show thermotropic LC properties. The self‐assembled LC structures of the spherical complexes can be tuned by the length of the rodlike moieties.  相似文献

Because of the growing importance of pH‐sensitive hydrogels as drug delivery systems, biocompatible copolymeric hydrogels based N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone (NVP) and methacrylic acid (MAA) were designed and synthesized. These hydrogels were investigated for oral drug delivery. Radical copolymerizations of N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone (NVP) and methacrylic acid (MAA) with the various ratios of cross‐linking agent were carried out at 70 °C. Azabisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) was the free‐radical initiator employed and Cubane‐1,4‐dicarboxylic acid (CDA) linked to two 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) group was the crosslinking agent (CA) used for hydrogel preparations. The hydrogels were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and FT‐IR. Equilibrium swelling studies were carried out in enzyme‐free simulated gastric and intestinal fluids (SGF and SIF, respectively). A model drug, olsalazine [3,3′‐azobis (6‐hydroxy benzoic acid)] (OSZ) as an azo derivative of 5‐aminosalicylic acid (5‐ASA), was entrapped in these gels and the in‐vitro release profiles were established separately in both enzyme‐free SGF and SIF. The drug‐release profiles indicated that the amount of drug released depended on the degree of swelling. The swelling was modulated by the amount of crosslinking of the polymer bonded drug (PBDs) prepared. Based on the great difference in hydrolysis rates at pH 1 and 7.4, these pH‐sensitive hydrogels appear to be good candidates for colon‐specific drug delivery.  相似文献

In this study, we immobilized enzymes by combining covalent surface immobilization and hydrogel entrapment. A model enzyme, glucose oxidase (GOX), was first covalently immobilized on the surface of silica nanoparticles (SNPs) via 3‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), and the resultant SNP‐immobilized enzyme was physically entrapped within photopolymerized hydrogels prepared from two different molecular weights (MWs) (575 and 8000 Da) of poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG). The hydrogel entrapment resulted in a decrease in reaction rate and an increase in apparent Km of SNP‐immobilized GOX, but these negative effects could be minimized by using hydrogel with a higher MW PEG, which provides higher water content and larger mesh size. The catalytic rate of the PEG 8000 hydrogel was about ten times faster than that of the PEG 575 hydrogel because of enhanced mass transfer. Long‐term stability test demonstrated that SNP‐immobilized GOX entrapped within hydrogel maintained more than 60% of its initial activity after a week, whereas non‐entrapped SNP‐immobilized GOX and entrapped GOX without SNP immobilization maintained less than 20% of their initial activity. Incorporation of SNPs into hydrogel enhanced the mechanical strength of the hydrogel six‐fold relative to bare hydrogels. Finally, a hydrogel microarray entrapping SNP‐immobilized GOX was fabricated using photolithography and successfully used for quantitative glucose detection. A roadblock for supramolecular hydrogels is their poor mechanical properties. Herein, to enhance the mechanical strength of supramolecular hydrogels, agarose(AG) was incorporated into the low molecular weight hydrogelator(G1). The results of scanning electron microscopy(SEM), circular dichroism(CD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) prove that G1 gelators can self-assemble into cross-linked network together with AG. The mechanical properties of the gels are characterized by a rotary rheometer and the mechanical properties of the hybrid hydrogels(Hgel) can be significantly improved and may be further tuned by changing the ratio of the two components. For example, the elastic modulus of Hgel Ⅱ[m(G1):m(AG)=7:3] is about 2 times higher than that of G1 hydrogel. The results demonstrate that the mechanical property of hybrid supramolecular hydrogels can be adjusted through the formation of a cross-linked network.  相似文献

We describe a one‐pot strategy for the fabrication of novel slide‐ring (SR) gels based on supramolecular polyrotaxane structures with cyclodextrin‐derived cross‐links and additional free cyclodextrin ring spacers co‐threaded onto the polymer backbones. Photoinitiated thiol‐yne click coupling leads to facile hydrogel fabrication from pseudo‐polyrotaxanes prepared in situ from β‐cyclodextrin derivatives and bifunctional polyethylene glycol (PEG). The obtained SR gels were characterized by NMR spectroscopy using a polyrotaxane model compound with the ratio of cyclodextrin sliding spacers to PEG backbone controlled by adjusting the feed ratio of the starting materials. This structural tuning leads to dramatic changes in the rheological properties, mechanical properties, and swelling behavior of the SR gels. In addition, the coupling of simple synthetic procedures with enhanced properties offers a versatile approach to novel elastomeric materials. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Poly(ethylene glycol)‐grafted‐multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT‐g‐PEG) was synthesized by a coupling reaction and formed inclusion complexes (ICs) after selective threading of the PEG segment of the MWNT‐g‐PEG through the cavities of α‐cyclodextrins (α‐CDs) units. The polypseudorotaxane structures of the as‐obtained hydrogels were confirmed by 1H NMR, X‐ray diffraction and DSC analyses. The complexation of the PEG segments with α‐CDs and the hydrophobic interaction between the MWNT resulted in the formation of supramolecular hybrid hydrogels with a strong network. Thermal analysis showed that the thermal stability of the hydrogel was substantially improved by up to 100 °C higher than that of native hydrogel. The resultant hybrid hydrogels were found to be thixotropic and reversible, and could be applied as a promising injectable drug delivery system. The mechanical strength of the hybrid hydrogels was greatly improved in comparison with that of the corresponding native hydrogels. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Injectable hydrogels have been commonly used as drug‐delivery vehicles and tried in tissue engineering. Injectable self‐healing hydrogels have great advantage over traditional injectable hydrogels because they can be injected as a liquid and then rapidly form bulk gels in situ at the target site under physiological conditions. This study develops an injectable thermosensitive self‐healing hydrogel based on chain‐extended F127 (PEO90‐PPO65‐PEO90) multi‐block copolymer (m‐F127). The rapid sol–gel transition ability under body temperature allows it to be used as injectable hydrogel and the self‐healing property allows it to withstand repeated deformation and quickly recover its mechanical properties and structure through the dynamic covalent bonds. It is hoped that the novel strategy and the fascinating properties of the hydrogel as presented here will provide new opportunities with regard to the design and practical application of injectable self‐healing hydrogels.

The dynamic covalent characteristics of oxime and boronate ester bonds have been explored. A small excess of a competing aldehyde under acidic conditions resulted in oxime polymer degradation from high molecular weights (30 kDa) to low molecular weight oligomers (2.2 kDa). The dynamic nature of oxime bonds imparts oxime cross‐linked hydrogels with self‐healing properties and the incorporation of phenyl boronic acid groups into the hydrogel network provides a platform for hydrogel functionalization. The addition of a polyphenol (tannic acid) proves a facile means to incorporate a second, dynamic covalent cross‐linking network through boronate ester formation which, owing to the increase in the degree of cross‐linking, is found to be nearly double the hydrogel strength (storage modulus increased from 4.6 to 8.5 kPa). Finally, the tannic acid cross‐linking network is selectively degraded returning the hydrogel storage modulus to its initial value and providing a means for the synthesis of materials with tunable mechanical properties.
