Iron is the cheapest and one of the most abundant transition metals. Natural [FeFe]‐hydrogenases exhibit remarkably high activity in hydrogen evolution, but they suffer from high oxygen sensitivity and difficulty in scale‐up. Herein, an FeP nanowire array was developed on Ti plate (FeP NA/Ti) from its β‐FeOOH NA/Ti precursor through a low‐temperature phosphidation reaction. When applied as self‐supported 3D hydrogen evolution cathode, the FeP NA/Ti electrode shows exceptionally high catalytic activity and good durability, and it only requires overpotentials of 55 and 127 mV to afford current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm2, respectively. The excellent electrocatalytic performance is promising for applications as non‐noble‐metal HER catalyst with a high performance–price ratio in electrochemical water splitting for large‐scale hydrogen fuel production.  相似文献

Superstructures have attracted great interest owing to their potential applications. Herein, we report the first scalable preparation of a porous nickel-foam-templated superstructure of carbon nanosheets decorated with ultrafine cobalt phosphide nanoparticles. Uniform two-dimensional (2D) Co-metal organic framework (MOF) nanosheets (Co-MNS) grow on nickel foam, followed by a MOF-mediated tandem (carbonization/phosphidation) pyrolysis. The resulting superstructure has a porous 3D interconnected network with well-arranged 2D carbon nanosheets on it, in which ultrafine cobalt phosphide nanoparticles are tightly immobilized. A single piece of this superstructure can be directly used as a self-supported electrode for electrocatalysis without any binders. This “one-piece” porous superstructure with excellent mass transport and electron transport properties, and catalytically active cobalt phosphide nanoparticles with ultrasmall size (3–4 nm), shows excellent trifunctional electrocatalytic activities for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), achieving great performances in water splitting and Zn–air batteries.  相似文献

The outstanding electrocatalytic activity of ruthenium (Ru) phosphides toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has received wide attention. However, the effect of the Ru phosphide phase on the HER performance remains unclear. Herein, a two-step method was developed to synthesize nanoparticles of three types of Ru phosphides, namely, Ru2P, RuP, and RuP2, with similar morphology, dimensions, loading density, and electrochemical surface area on graphene nanosheets by simply controlling the dosage of phytic acid as P source. Electrochemical tests revealed that Ru2P/graphene shows the highest intrinsic HER activity, followed by RuP/graphene and RuP2/graphene. Ru2P/graphene affords a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of 18 mV in acid media. Theoretical calculations further showed that P-deficient Ru2P has a lower free energy of hydrogen adsorption on the surface than other two, P-rich Ru phosphides (RuP, RuP2), which confirms the excellent intrinsic HER activity of Ru2P and is consistent with experiment results. The work reveals for the first time a clear trend of HER activity among three Ru phosphide phases.  相似文献

How the crystal structures of ordered transition-metal phosphide catalysts affect the hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER) is investigated by measuring the anisotropic catalytic activities of selected crystallographic facets on large (mm-sized) single crystals of iron-phosphide (FeP) and monoclinic nickel-diphosphide (m-NiP2). We find that different crystallographic facets exhibit distinct HER activities, in contrast to a commonly held assumption of severe surface restructuring during catalytic activity. Moreover, density-functional-theory-based computational studies show that the observed facet activity correlates well with the H-binding energy to P atoms on specific surface terminations. Direction dependent catalytic properties of two different phosphides with different transition metals, crystal structures, and electronic properties (FeP is a metal, while m-NiP2 is a semiconductor) suggests that the anisotropy of catalytic properties is a common trend for HER phosphide catalysts. This realization opens an additional rational design for highly efficient HER phosphide catalysts, through the growth of nanocrystals with specific exposed facets. Furthermore, the agreement between theory and experimental trends indicates that screening using DFT methods can accelerate the identification of desirable facets, especially for ternary or multinary compounds. The large single-crystal nature of the phosphide electrodes with well-defined surfaces allows for determination of the catalytically important double-layer capacitance of a flat surface, Cdl = 39(2) μF cm−2 for FeP, useful for an accurate calculation of the turnover frequency (TOF). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies of the catalytic crystals that were used show the formation of a thin oxide/phosphate overlayer, presumably ex situ due to air-exposure. This layer is easily removed for FeP, revealing a surface of pristine metal phosphide.

The effect of the crystal structure of ordered transition-metal phosphide catalysts on the hydrogen-evolution reaction is investigated using single crystals of iron-phosphide (FeP) and monoclinic nickel-diphosphide (m-NiP2).  相似文献

Nickel phosphide is an emerging low‐cost, earth‐abundant catalyst that can efficiently reduce water to generate hydrogen. However, the synthesis of nickel phosphide catalysts usually involves multiple steps and is laborious. Herein, a convenient and straightforward approach to the synthesis of a three‐dimensional (3D) self‐supported biphasic Ni5P4‐Ni2P nanosheet (NS) array cathode is presented, which is obtained by direct phosphorization of commercially available nickel foam using phosphorus vapor. The synthesized 3D Ni5P4‐Ni2P‐NS array cathode exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic activity and long‐term durability toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic medium. The fabrication procedure reported here is scalable, showing substantial promise for use in water electrolysis. More importantly, the approach can be readily extended to synthesize other self‐supported transition metal phosphide HER cathodes.  相似文献

Chemical doping has been demonstrated to be an effective way to realize new functions of graphene as metal‐free catalyst in energy‐related electrochemical reactions. Although efficient catalysis for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has been achieved with doped graphene, its performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is rather poor. In this study we report that nitrogen and sulfur co‐doping leads to high catalytic activity of nanoporous graphene in HER at low operating potential, comparable to the best Pt‐free HER catalyst, 2D MoS2. The interplay between the chemical dopants and geometric lattice defects of the nanoporous graphene plays the fundamental role in the superior HER catalysis.

The development of new promising metal‐free catalysts is of great significance for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a rationally assembled three‐dimensional (3D) architecture of 1D graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) nanoribbons with 2D graphene sheets has been developed by a one‐step hydrothermal method. Because of the multipathway of charge and mass transport, the hierarchically structured g‐C3N4 nanoribbon–graphene hybrids lead to a high electrocatalytic ability for HER with a Tafel slope of 54 mV decade?1, a low onset overpotential of 80 mV and overpotential of 207 mV to approach a current of 10 mA cm?2, superior to those non‐metal materials and well‐developed metallic catalysts reported previously. This work presents a great advance for designing and developing highly efficient metal‐free catalyst for hydrogen evolution.  相似文献

Highly efficient,cost-effective,and durable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)in water splitting is crucial for ene rgy conversion and sto rage.Herein,we report NiCoP 1D nanothorn arrays grown on 3D porous Ni film current collectors(Ni/NiCoP)as the novel electrocatalytic electrodes. The 3D hierarchically porous nickel films containing large 7±2μm pores and small pores less than 1μm are obtained through using hydrogen bubbles dynamic template method. The NiCoP 1D nanothorns are about 70 nm in diameter and 4-8μm in length. The porous Ni/NiCoP electrocatalytic electrodes demonstrate much higher catalytic activity and remarkable stability for long-term HER.The excellent electrocatalytic performance might be attributed to the inherent nature of highly catalytic active NiCo bimetal phosphides and the unique architecture of 1D nanothorn active materials directly integrated on the 3D hierarchically porous metallic nickel conductive skeletons. The developed electrode has been fabricated to the integrated solar-driven seawater-splitting system.  相似文献

Water electrolysis offers a promising green technology to tackle the global energy and environmental crisis, but its efficiency is greatly limited by the sluggish reaction kinetics of both the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, by growing amorphous multi-transition-metal (cobalt and iron) oxide on two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus (BP), we develop a bifunctional electrocatalyst (CoFeO@BP), which is able to efficiently catalyze both HER and OER. The overpotentials for the hybrid CoFeO@BP catalyst to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 1 m KOH are 88 and 266 mV for HER and OER, respectively. Based on a series of ex-situ and in situ investigations, the excellent catalytic performance of CoFeO@BP is found to result from the adaptive surface structure under reduction and oxidation potentials. CoFeO@BP can be transformed to CoFe phosphide under reduction potential, in situ generating the real active catalyst for HER.  相似文献

Electrocatalysts are required for clean energy technologies (for example, water‐splitting and metal‐air batteries). The development of a multifunctional electrocatalyst composed of nitrogen, phosphorus, and fluorine tri‐doped graphene is reported, which was obtained by thermal activation of a mixture of polyaniline‐coated graphene oxide and ammonium hexafluorophosphate (AHF). It was found that thermal decomposition of AHF provides nitrogen, phosphorus, and fluorine sources for tri‐doping with N, P, and F, and simultaneously facilitates template‐free formation of porous structures as a result of thermal gas evolution. The resultant N, P, and F tri‐doped graphene exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activities for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The trifunctional metal‐free catalyst was further used as an OER–HER bifunctional catalyst for oxygen and hydrogen gas production in an electrochemical water‐splitting unit, which was powered by an integrated Zn–air battery based on an air electrode made from the same electrocatalyst for ORR. The integrated unit, fabricated from the newly developed N, P, and F tri‐doped graphene multifunctional metal‐free catalyst, can operate in ambient air with a high gas production rate of 0.496 and 0.254 μL s−1 for hydrogen and oxygen gas, respectively, showing great potential for practical applications.  相似文献

The development of low platinum loading hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts with high activity and stability is of great significance to the practical application of hydrogen energy. This paper reports a simple method to synthesize a highly efficient HER catalyst through coating a highly dispersed PtNi alloy on porous nitrogen-doped carbon (MNC) derived from the zeolite imidazolate skeleton. The catalyst is characterized and analyzed by physical characterization methods, such as XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, XPS, and LSV, EIS, it, v-t, etc. The optimized sample exhibits an overpotential of only 26 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, outperforming commercial 20 wt% Pt/C (33 mV). The synthesized catalyst shows a relatively fast HER kinetics as evidenced by the small Tafel slope of 21.5 mV dec−1 due to the small charge transfer resistance, the alloying effect between Pt and Ni, and the interaction between PtNi alloy and carrier.  相似文献

Introducing sulfur into the surface of molybdenum phosphide (MoP) produces a molybdenum phosphosulfide (MoP|S) catalyst with superb activity and stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic environments. The MoP|S catalyst reported herein exhibits one of the highest HER activities of any non‐noble‐metal electrocatalyst investigated in strong acid, while remaining perfectly stable in accelerated durability testing. Whereas mixed‐metal alloy catalysts are well‐known, MoP|S represents a more uncommon mixed‐anion catalyst where synergistic effects between sulfur and phosphorus produce a high‐surface‐area electrode that is more active than those based on either the pure sulfide or the pure phosphide. The extraordinarily high activity and stability of this catalyst open up avenues to replace platinum in technologies relevant to renewable energies, such as proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers and solar photoelectrochemical (PEC) water‐splitting cells.  相似文献

Major challenges encountered when trying to replace precious‐metal‐based electrocatalysts of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic media are related to the low efficiency and stability of non‐precious‐metal compounds. Therefore, new concepts and strategies have to be devised to develop electrocatalysts that are based on earth‐abundant materials. Herein, we report a hierarchical architecture that consists of ultrathin graphene shells (only 1–3 layers) that encapsulate a uniform CoNi nanoalloy to enhance its HER performance in acidic media. The optimized catalyst exhibits high stability and activity with an onset overpotential of almost zero versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and an overpotential of only 142 mV at 10 mA cm?2, which is quite close to that of commercial 40 % Pt/C catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the ultrathin graphene shells strongly promote electron penetration from the CoNi nanoalloy to the graphene surface. With nitrogen dopants, they synergistically increase the electron density on the graphene surface, which results in superior HER activity on the graphene shells.  相似文献
