We investigate propagation behavior of electromagnetic waves in a slab uniaxial metamaterial waveguide with metal cladding and discuss the dispersion relation, group velocity and energy flux distribution of transverse electric guided modes in two kinds of uniaxial metamaterial waveguides with different orientations of optical axis in detail. The numerical results show that there exist anomalous dispersion properties such as backward modes existing in low-frequency range, and the group velocity can be negative or approach zero. If the orientation of optical axis is selected properly, each guided mode has two dispersion curves—one is normal dispersion and another belongs to anomalous dispersion and shows a transition from a backward mode to a forward one with the angular frequency increasing. In addition, the condition of the existence of cutoff frequency is clarified. These properties may have potential applications in optical information storage, optical communication, integrated optics and nanophotonic devices.  相似文献

Here, we present the phase constant dependencies of propagating eigenmodes of an open cylindrical anisotropic metamaterial waveguide when the metamaterial permittivity and permeability tensor components may accept values close or equal to zero. Dispersion characteristics of rod and hollow-core waveguides with the radii 0.5, 2.5, and 5 mm at the left-handed polarization of the microwave are shown here. There are unusual shapes of eigenmode dispersion characteristics and anomalous sectors of the characteristics at certain frequencies. The first eigenmode of the rod waveguide with the lowest cutoff frequency is a particularly important mode because it is a single one in the frequency range 1.0?C1.9 GHz, and some small variations on the frequency produce large changes in the phase constant. We can observe packages of dispersion characteristic branches when their cutoff frequencies closed to the metamaterial electric and magnetic plasma frequencies between 1.9 and 3.5 GHz. There are only three modes in the hollow core anisotropic metamaterial waveguide at the frequency range 1.4?C2.8 GHz.  相似文献

We study the slow propagation of plasmonic modes in a three-layer symmetric waveguide with anisotropic metamaterial claddings and a dielectric core. The dispersion equations for symmetric and anti-symmetric plasmonic modes are derived, and a graphic method is used to verify the zero-group-velocity point on the dispersion curves. Simulation results show the influences of signs of tensors and anisotropy of metamaterial on trapped plasmonic modes.  相似文献

In this paper, transmission characteristics of wave modes in a rectangular waveguide filled with lossless anisotropic metamaterial are theoretically investigated. The wave equation and dispersion relations for TE and TM modes in the waveguide are obtained and analyzed. It is shown that the negative constitutive parameters of the filling anisotropic metamaterial can be used to control the wave magnitude and the phase velocity direction in the waveguide over the entire frequency domain, both below and above the cutoff frequency. Particularly, not only backward waves, but also forward waves can propagate below the cutoff frequency in the waveguide. Furthermore, a typical example is calculated to demonstrate transmission characteristics of waves inside the waveguide. Numerical results are obtained in the paper and compared with theoretical predictions: a good agreement is found.  相似文献

对于晶体光轴平行于波导界面的结构,讨论了光在金属包层对称平面单轴晶体波导(波导层是单轴晶体,两个波导界面均为金属)内的传输特性.解析地得到了这种结构下波导模式场的精确解.模式场的性质因单轴晶体的性质不同而异.对于正单轴晶体,波导的主模是横电波,任何频率的光波均可激励该模式;当频率满足一定条件时,波导内传输单模,否则,将激励起高阶模式.高阶模既非TE波,也非TM波,而是两者耦合而成的混合模.对于负单轴晶体,波导的主模是一种混合模,该模式同样可被任何频率的光波所激励;当频率满足一定条件时,波导内传输单模,否则 关键词: 平面金属波导 单轴晶体 模式场 混合模  相似文献

We study the optical modes in a plasmonic waveguide with electrically anisotropic metamaterial and dielectric, including symmetric (anti-symmetric) photonic mode and symmetric (anti-symmetric) plasmonic mode. The dispersion curves for these modes are derived, and a graphical method is used to calculate the solution of symmetric photonic mode and anti-symmetric plasmonic mode. 本文在理论分析的基础上,实验研究了二维MNG/DPS/MNG(磁单负材料/双正材料/磁单负材料)表面波波导中的慢波效应.该波导的色散曲线随着电路参数(单元电容)的改变而改变,而且在色散曲线的截止频率点,电磁波的群速度理论上等于零.因此可以通过改变MNG区域的电路参数,得到在不同截止频率的慢波特性.另外,本文还通过改变MNG区域的电路参数实现在某一固定频率下波速度渐变的慢波效应.实验结果与仿真结果相一致.  相似文献

We have numerically studied the characteristics of a slab waveguide loaded with dispersive anisotropic metamaterials. For two typical-structured metamaterials, we have analyzed the tensor expressions of frequency-dependent permittivity and permeability and discussed influences of the resonant cell structures on waveguiding characteristics. Numerical results show that the slab waveguide loaded with anisotropic metamaterials may, to some extent, behave as the slab waveguides of isotropic left-handed metamaterials (LHMs) core and conventional right-handed materials core. To one’s interest, some unusual properties are revealed in this paper, such as the coexistence of the fundamental guided mode and negative group velocity, and extraordinarily large normal or anomalous group velocity dispersion. Our results may find some potential applications in both linear and nonlinear optical technology.  相似文献

We consider electromagnetic waves guided by slabs of anisotropic resonant magnetic metamaterials in free space and in metal waveguides. It is shown that wave propagation is possible in a waveguide below cutoff with an insert of such a metamaterial. The dependence of the dispersion properties of waves on the geometric sizes of the insert and the waveguide are studied. We reveal that stimulated Raman process can be one of the effective ways to compensate the energy loss intrinsic to the optical modes in waveguides composed of left-handed metamaterial. We evaluate the effect of the energy compensating process by using the guided mode’s wave functions multiplied by the envelope functions, which describe the stimulated Raman energy compensating process. Such an evaluation shows that the energy of the optical signal mode in the waveguide with lossy left-handed media can successfully be compensated.  相似文献

Guided and surface modes in the chiral nihility fiber consisting of a chiral nihility metamaterial core with an achiral cladding have been investigated. The dispersion equations of guided and surface modes in the chiral nihility fiber and their cutoff frequencies are derived. Dispersion curves of guided and surface modes are presented and the effect of chirality parameter on dispersion curves is discussed in detail. The wave reflection from a non-magnetic anisotropic metamaterial, whose principal elements of the permittivity tensor have different signs, is investigated in this paper. It is found that, if the orientation of the optical axis is properly chosen, an extremely small change of the transverse wave number will lead to a dramatically change of the reflectivity at the glancing incidence. The physical insight for this abrupt change of reflectivity is also given by the analysis of the imaginary part of the k-surface. Since the metamaterial discussed here have been experimental realized from GHz to optical frequencies, the proposed abrupt change property of reflectivity may find some potential applications in various calibration devices, because of its extremely sensitivity to the transverse wave number.  相似文献

We explore the dispersion properties and optical gradient forces from mutual coupling of surface plasmon polariton(SPP) modes at two interfaces of nanoscale plasmonic waveguides with hyperbolic metamaterial cladding.With Maxwell's equations and Maxwell stress tensor,we calculate and compare the dispersion relation and optical gradient force for symmetric and antisymmetric SPP modes in two kinds of nanoscale plasmonic waveguides.The numerical results show that the optical gradient force between two coupled hyperbolic metamaterial waveguides can be engineered flexibly by adjusting the waveguide structure parameters.Importantly,an alternative way to boost the optical gradient force is provided through engineering the hyperbolic metamaterial cladding of suitable orientation.These special optical properties will open the door for potential optomechanical applications,such as optical tweezers and actuators.  相似文献

提出谱有限元方法研究层状各向异性复合板中导波的色散特性和波结构。基于三维弹性动力学方程,用有限元方法离散波导截面,波传播方向的位移用简谐波表示,得到了导波色散的特征方程。分析了单层和双层复合板中导波沿不同方向传播的色散特性和波结构,讨论了双层复合板中层厚比对相速度的影响。数值研究结果表明:导波的对称模态沿纤维方向传播时在较宽的频率范围内保持弱色散状态。双层复合板中导波基本模态的相速度在低频时受层厚比的影响较明显,随着频率的增加趋向于相速度较低的材料。数值模拟结果为导波用于复合材料定量无损检测和性能评价提供理论依据。   相似文献

In this work we investigate the linear and nonlinear coupling properties of a novel multicore circular dielectric waveguide. The proposed device consists of a circular central core and many circular sectoral cores at the periphery, while the whole structure can be considered as a nonlinear multicore composite optical coupler. Hybrid guided modes in a circular sectoral dielectric waveguide are derived using circular harmonic expansion for the electromagnetic fields and the Point Matching Method (PMM) for the application of boundary conditions. Several cases are investigated varying some of the parameters of the geometry and the optical frequency in order to produce dispersion diagrams. In advance, the electric and magnetic field distributions for the fundamental guided modes are produced, while linear and nonlinear coupling coefficients as well as the sectoral waveguide mode effective area are derived.  相似文献

We investigate basic properties of linear guided modes in a waveguide slab with the core of a material with simultaneously negative effective permittivity and permeability surrounded by a normal dielectric cladding. The existence and dispersion of all possible types of guided modes have been studied in detail. We demonstrate that the two orthogonally polarized, TE and TM slow guided modes, with the same frequency and the same wave number can exist simultaneously. Their group velocities, however, can be parallel or anti-parallel.  相似文献

研究一个芯子层是左手材料,其他三层由传统材料构成的四层平板光波导系统,利用图解法对各种TE偏振的导波模式的解进行详细分析.研究表明,四层左手材料光波导既能支持振荡导模,也能支持表面导模,与三层左手材料光波导相比较,此四层波导的导波模式呈现一些新的特性.对于中间传统材料层存在振荡场的情形:芯子层支持振荡导模的光波导中存在基模,并且高阶振荡导模出现模式缺失的性质;芯子层支持表面导模的光波导可以支持基模和多个高阶模式,并且存在模式兼并的性质.对于中间传统材料层存在衰减场的情形,此四层波导结构可等效为三层左手材料光波导.这些新的光波导传输性质对各种光波导器件的制作有潜在的应用价值.  相似文献
